Two of the chief perks about where you live seem to contradict each other.

People want to be near conveniences, such as restaurants, shopping center and supermarkets. Yet they also want to be removed from noise and traffic.

Representatives of Planters Crossing, a fixture in North Charleston for 28 years, believe the 256-apartment complex can provide both.

“It’s a very good location,” says Shannon Justice, property manager. The community, accessible from Greenridge Road, is a short distance from Northwoods Mall and Rivers Avenue. At the same, “we are in the back off Crossroads (Drive). There is not a lot of traffic.”

Planters Crossing offers one- and two-bedroom rentals, split evenly. “There are very spacious floor plans,” she says. The apartments have walk-in closets and refrigerator, stove, disposal and dishwasher in kitchens.

One-bedroom, one bath units, 700 square feet in size, are priced at $659 a month. The two-bedroom, two bath choices, which are 1,000 square feet, are $759 a month. “We do include water and sewer, trash and pest control (in the rental cost),” Justice says. There is no security deposit, although the complex requires a one-time $300 administrative fee. Pets are allowed, she says.

Lease terms are generous: three to 18 month rentals are available. For a 12-month lease, tenants get a free membership at East Shore Beach and Racquet club on Dorchester Road.

The complex, too, has amenities: a swimming pool up to 8 feet deep, clubhouse with business center, tennis court with screen and backboard and two laundry facilities. The maintenance staff works a full week and are available for emergencies and after hours fix-it calls, she says.

Planters Crossing has a healthy mix of tenants. “We really have a variety, some professional, students, retired, families, too,” Justice says. Once every three months or so, the property hosts on a community events such as Santa Claus appearing for the holidays.

The complex also rents furnished apartments upon request, which are priced at $1,000 a month for a one bedroom unit and $1,400 a month for a two bedroom. Furniture is brought in once the apartment is leased. For tenants, “they literally need (nothing more than) themselves, clothes and groceries,” Justice says.

InterSouth Properties, based in Charleston, manages the community. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 572-0660.

To get to the Planters Crossing, take Interstate 26 to the U.S. Highway 52 exit, 209A. Follow the exit to Rivers Avenue, then turn at the traffic light onto Greenridge Road (the exit is from the right hand lane and circles around to cross Rivers). Follow Greenridge to the third left, which is Crossroads Drive. Turn left, and continue to the end. The complex is on the left.
