Landfill looking to expand

New facility would accept only construction debris

SUMMERVILLE — A Dorchester County landfill is set to expand, unless somebody has valid objections.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control is taking written comments through the end of the month and will schedule a public hearing to hear concerns.

Oakridge Landfill is off U.S. Highway 78 between Ridgeville and St. George. About 750,000 tons of household garbage go there each year, according to DHEC. From the highway, it looks like a 50-foot mountain of dirt looming above the trees.

Owners are asking DHEC to let them start a separate landfill nearby that will accept only construction and demolition debris. That includes bricks, blocks, shingles and untreated lumber; it does not include oil and hazardous materials.

DHEC has given the permit initial approval, saying the dry materials pose no threat to nearby Four Hole

Swamp.

Still, Dorchester County officials have requested a public hearing.

"I'd like to know what they are going to be putting in it," Councilman Richard Rosebrock said.

He also would like some assurance that it won't become a dump for the rest of the nation, rather than handling mainly local materials.

"I don't want Dorchester County to be a dumping ground for anybody who wants to come in," he said.

Rosebrock got County Administrator Jason Ward to contact DHEC and expects a hearing in February.

Last year, county council approved rezoning for a construction-debris landfill near Jedburg, despite objections from nearby residents. As it turned out, Carolina Resources Development did not pursue the project, and DHEC revoked the permit after a year.

Jim Way has lived near the Oakridge Landfill for years and is president of the Upper Dorchester County Historical Society. He said he doesn't have any objections to Oakridge expanding.

"There is so much crap in there already, a little bit more is not going to hurt," he said. "It's already a ruined area, so why would you go and want to ruin a new area? Its better there than someplace else."

zoomru, you keep putting that web site up about a plasma converter that converts trash and garbage to usable gas. On that web site they claim to create plasma that reaches 30,000 degrees, several times hotter than the sun. Don't you realize that there is no material known to man that could contain such temperatures. Even NASA says it will take a force field generated by a nuclear reactor to contain a plasma and that it will take at least 50 more years before it might be a reality. If you have invested in such a scheme, I hope you are young.

We need to expand our recycling pick-up across the tri-county area. If we were to recycle as much as possible it would drastically reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. They can expand this one, but what happens ten years down the road when it's full again?

A substantial reduction in the amount of trash could be accomplished by the cessation of junk mail.

But then, the US postal service would have to increase rates to make up for the loss of revenue from that useless source.

Hey...Hey ...HEY !!! Collards and LC-SAINT03..!!!

Every ...CITY !! Should have a plasma converter so that OUR trash is NOT trucked all over OUR county and waisting Diesel...!!! The cities should be generating TAX revenue from their trash...!!! CUT THE COUNTY OUT ....all together !!!

LC-Saint....your busted !!! If you were a REAL South Carolinian ...YOU....(YES YOU !!) would get yourself EDUCATED on ALL solutions to OUR trash problem instead of putting it in a landfill..!! Your no better than DHEC for NOT standing up to politicians !!! Instead ....you attack ...little ol' ME ?? If you would stop and think about the ramifications for turning ALL out trash into ENERGY instead of percolating "FART Fields" to benefit campaign STASH at the taxpayers expense....YOU...(yes YOU!) would understand how much more WE ALL stand to benefit ...!!! I challenge you ....(YES YOU!) to call www.startech.net and TALK and LEARN about how the economics of these machines PAY OUT !!!!

Don't take my word....don't believe ME.....EDUCATE YOURSELF..!!!! Its DHEC that wants YOU to TRUST THEM..??!?!

I agree with saint, however they do make these "beloved" plasma WTE converters that are larger. Back in early 2007, it only cost a mere $250M for a 2K ton per day unit. My guess is that it would really cost a lot more than that. With that being said, we do live in a throw away society and it is far easier and less expensive to bury it. I don't think it is right, but as long as people don't want to do their part... LIVE WITH IT. As far as plasma goes, popular science did a really good article on it back in early 2007.

The technology for those type of incinerators is nothing new. Its been around since before WW2. I use it everytime I weld or plasma cut stainless steel. I doubt they could be self sufficient by using the flamable gas generated as a by product. They are nothing more than a electric and or gas fired incinerator. I see no mention of the ash and other harmful by products that would still need disposal. Not very green in my book and certainly not a self sustained reaction creating a plasma such as the sun.

zoomru was also spouting off about those pods to replace all other transportation. He kept pointing to a site that never built anything but had great pictures of what they would build if they had enough money. His current foam at the mouth soap box project has a better web site and actually has more than pictures to show, but it's still not much better. It's nothing more than an incinerator, with all of the problems that come with current incinerators at greater cost. It's not like it can convert arsenic and cadmium to gold.

Skytran has not even been built. There isn't even a prototype. There is no such thing other than on paper.
