Spirit of giving remains strong

Thursday, December 25, 2008

I have performed volunteer work for The Salvation Army on occasions in the past and again on Dec. 13 as a bellringer for the annual kettle drive in Summerville.

This holiday season, many in our community are experiencing anxiety from the difficult economy and the uncertainty associated with economic recession, including job losses, and diminished savings and retirement accounts.

During my two-hour shift, in spite of all these stresses, the kettle received many generous donations, all accompanied with a greeting, a smile and a wish for a Merry Christmas. I want to thank Wal-Mart for allowing us to have our kettle in front of its store, the many boys and girls who dropped change in the kettle to help others less fortunate and to all the shoppers who took an extra moment to donate.

I also want to thank the young mother who sang a great version of Jingle Bells, accompanied by my bell ringing and my very poor attempt to harmonize.

The spirit of the season, witnessed through the generosity of so many that day, reinforced the message that appeared in The (New York) Sun more than 100 years ago that rings true today: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."
