Sunday, December 21, 2008

MONCKS CORNER — One of the two women struck by a car while crossing West Main Street on the evening of Dec. 9 has died.

Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said Linda Way, 61, of St. Stephen, died Saturday at Medical University Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

Way and an 83-year-old woman, whose name was not released by Moncks Corner police, were crossing West Main Street together, arm-in-arm, around 7:40 p.m. when they were hit by a westbound car driven by Frances Joy, 74, of Moncks Corner.

Police filed no charges related to the accident. At the time, a detective said that Joy was observing the speed limit and the detective noted that it was dark and raining at the time of the incident.

Is there any further information as to if the accident will be investigated further at all?

There is a law in SC stating that a pedestrian must give way to vehicles... so, no charges will be filed if you do a hit and run on a person in the road not in a designated crosswalk or on the far shoulder...

A guy from ARS ran into me, I called in a hit and run and they gave me a citation for failure to yield to a vehicle.... US laws are messed up..

I have known these ladies all my life and it is a tragedy. The even greater tragedy is that they are being portrayed as carelessly walking in front of a law abiding citizen just minding her business when in reality there is no way they would have just walked out in the road in front of anyone! The older lady had had both knees replaced and moves slowly related to this. They were all the way to the center line when they were hit. Check the facts! The damage to te car was to the front of the driver side of the car- not the passenger side. Also there were no skid marks.
Regardless of what the speed limit is, (and by the way it is 35MPH) no one should have been driving that fast in front of the school in the rain at night when people were trying to get to their vehicles after a school function was over.
Also, where were the police before these ladies got hit?
Why weren't they out there directing traffic and slowing people down?
