"Mister Lonely" (2007, IFC Films) **** (out of 4)

If you have a love for the beautifully bizarre, don't miss this film, about the blossoming love between two celebrity impersonators: Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe (who has a Shirley Temple impersonator for a daughter, no less). In a film driven by a cast of celebrity doppelgangers and a subplot involving a priest and his flying nuns, director Harmony Korine has returned to the screen with the trademark unhinged whimsy that defined his other films, "Gummo" and "Julien Donkey Boy."

Directed by Harmony Korine. Starring Denis Lavant, Samantha Morton. DVD features: deleted scenes, a "making of" featurette. Unrated. Recommended if you like "Gummo," "The Fall."

"Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson" (2007, Magnolia Films) ****

Interspersed with interviews of those close to Hunter S. Thompson (including conservative Pat Buchanan) and rare home video footage, the film offers another look at the man who created "gonzo journalism." Narrated by Johnny Depp, who portrayed Thompson in the 1997 film "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas," this fast-paced documentary details, among other things, the journalist's perilous relationship with the Hell's Angels and the infamous tales that fueled his book, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

Directed by Alex Gibney. Starring Johnny Depp, Hunter S. Thompson. Rated R. DVD features commentary, music video, audio excerpts, extended interviews, deleted scenes, "Gonzo" art /photo gallery. Recommended if you like "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas," "Guerrilla - The Taking Of Patty Hearst."

"Return To Sleepaway Camp" (2008, Magnet Films) **

This belated and drab sequel to the 1983 classic , "Sleepaway Camp," relies on the original's memory to entertain its audience. More than two decades after the original film's murder spree, someone is killing the kids and counselors at Camp Manabe. Is the culprit the tyrannical owner, Frank? Or the camp's bully-magnet Alan? Or the effeminate Sheriff Jerry? With the director and cast members reuniting for another go around in the Summer Camp Psycho genre, lightning fails to strike twice.

Directed by Robert Hiltzik. Starring Vincent Pastore, Jackie Tohn Jonathan Tiersten. Rated R. DVD features: commentary, music video, interviews, "making of" featurette. Recommended if you like "Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3," "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

"Sukiyaki Western Django" (2007) First Look ** 1/2

From the groundbreaking director of "Audition" and "Ichi The Killer" comes this dizzying Eastern twist on the spaghetti westerns of the '70s. A lone gunman finds himself at the center of two clans fighting over a treasure hidden within the mountains. As the citizens try to anticipate which clan the gunman ultimately | will side with, the town quickly spirals into a bombastic showdown that threatens to tear everything apart. Despite the film's intoxicating energy and quirky style, "Sukiyaki Western Django" nearly falls victim to its own grindhouse roots.

Directed by Takashi Miike. Starring Kaori Momoi, Quentin Tarantino. Rated R. DVD features: deleted scenes, "making of" featurette. Recommended if you like "Yojimbo," "Fistful of Dollars."

Bryce Donovan: It Beats Working...

A couple of weekends ago, my wife and I went hiking (notice I took my wife with me) (and we actually went hiking) in the mountains of North Carolina. It was during that time, surrounded by vast amounts of open space and the gentle sounds of nature, that I had a chance to reflect on some things, most notably, how much I missed cable television.
