Chef killed, wife injured
Woman charged with felony DUI in collision
A popular local chef was killed and his wife injured late Saturday after authorities say their car was hit head on by another car traveling the wrong way on the James Island connector.
Brett Maynard, 35, of James Island died at the scene of the 1:15 a.m. wreck in the westbound lanes of the connector, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said. An autopsy is scheduled for today. Maynard's wife, Jill, was listed in fair condition at the Medical University Hospital Sunday night.
Charleston Police on Sunday charged Amy McCormick, 37, of Charleston with two counts of felony DUI and one count of child endangerment after they say she was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. Police say McCormick's infant was in the car with her but was secured in a child seat and not injured.
Authorities say Maynard was a passenger in the car driven by his wife. Friends say Maynard was a highly regarded chef who was well-known from working several years at Fulton Five in downtown Charleston and, most recently, at his job at 39 Rue de Jean. He also operated his own restaurant, Twizt on James Island, for a while.
"He was an excellent chef who was locally well-known," said Laura Bright, marketing director for Maverick Southern Kitchens, the corporate owner of High Cotton, where Jill Maynard works.
Bright said Jill Maynard has been a general manager with the Charleston High Cotton restaurant since it opened in 1999. Bright said Jill sustained injuries to both of her ankles but is expected to fully recover.

Amy McCormick will surely suffer...the guilt of knowing she took a life, ruined another, and lost her child, all in one fell swoop...and at 37...we can't blame her being young and stupid...she's just an idiot.

Another life lost to a drunk driver and lives ruined by them. When was the last time you saw a DUI check point? There should be one every night by each law enforcement agency in the Tri-county area.

There aren't enough cops in the area, according to the Public Defenders office. My taxes are outrageous, but I wouldn't mind if the taxes went to more funding for law enforcement instead of CCSD administration and their fancy office building (note, I said administration, not schools). There are DUI/license checkpoints, and people scream harassment. There are several DUI arrests almost every night, and the judges put them back on the street. Bet McCormick gets a suspended sentence.

I think it's time we have a ZERO tolerance law on drunk driving.
In other words no drink is acceptable, not even just one. Lower the limit to .01 so that if you have a drink and drive its jail.
That is the rule I'm under every time I step into the cockpit and begin a check list. You don't have even one drink 24 hours before you fly or you're fired.
Most countries have the 8 hours bottle to throttle rule for boat captains and pilots why not drivers?

I agree with you, Cedarposts. Zero tolerance for drunk drivers. And I hardly call 37 being "young and stupid". Stupid, yes. Selfish, yes. Her 'suffering' is nothing compared to what Mrs. Maynard is and will be going through. There is no excuse for drinking and driving. None. And to have a child in the car when you knowingly get behind the wheel of a car????? She needs to face murder charges, at the very least.

Its that legal drug called alcohol. Legal in every state to do this to more innocent people. This women should spend the rest of her life in jail, and loose her child, what an awful excuse for a mother to be that drunk with her child in the car and going the wrong way. But every one will sympathize with her because she has a disease called not knowing when to stop drinking. Lock her up, throw away the key and never worry about her again, apparently she has no regard for anyone, including herself, being a worthless drunk that she is by displaying herself in this manner. Thanks to that legal drug "alcohol"

My condolences to the family. As for this POS so called mother- she should fry. This couldve been prevented and not just by the scum who hit them. The judge has failed the community and most of all this family. Something tells me this drug addicted drunk didnt quit using while she was pregnant. Did no one see this? I think the people she was drinking and using drugs with should be charged as well. Who in God's name would let a woman get plastered, use drugs and hop in the car with an infant and drive? (even most addicts will often dump their kid off with someone so they can go party) I think judges shoud be held accountable when they slap the wrists of criminals and endanger the community. I bet sentences would be a lot harsher. So very sad.

"Woman charged in Dorchester fatality"
http://www.charleston.net/news/2008/nov/...
She killed the very popular Matthew Joseph "Joe" Bunch of Summerville on October 8th of this year. She was driving under a suspended license too. She had just been arrested one month earlier for DUI (not her first) and then a week after that for an open container. The next month, she "loses control" of her car and hits the beloved 69 year old crossing guard, killing him. She wasn't found to be drunk that time, but she may very well have been under the influence of the pain killers that she is addicted too. They cause her to black out and have seizures. That drug abuse resulted in her having a one car accident a few years back that nearly paralyzed her.
The kicker? After she totaled her vehicle in the accident that killed Joe Bunch, her mother got her a new vehicle to drive. She's still driving. Still under suspension. Still drinking and driving and taking her narcotics. Still under charges for the last person she killed.

I have taken a picture of a woman with a small toddler(approx a year old) unrestrained and crawling all over her moving vehicle. If I saw a career drunk who had previously killed someone get sauced up and hop in a car- I would physically stop her and call the police. I have no problem with being a good citizen and reporting crime. Unfortuntely applying makeup while driving is just idiotic and not a crime. I could never forgive myself if I saw a known drunk get into their car sauced up,(I did nothing) and they hit and killed someone. Thanks but no thanks.

It's about teaching personal responsibility not government interference. Please STOP THINKING THE GOVERNMENT CAN SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF THIS NATION. IT CANNOT NOT. Regulation and control is not the answer. Parents and teachers teaching personal responsibility for childrens actions will lead to adults who take responsibility for their own actions. This feel good society is killing this country. We need a reformation to Biblical truths and values. We need a revival in this country desperately. QUIT encouraging the government to do more, they have done too much.

I actually passed this driver while on the JI Connector that night at almost exactly 1:15 right before the accident - called 911 to report it, but the driver was already out of site by the time I got through.
She must have entered the highway on James Island, either off Folly Road or the Harborview exit, but she most likely turned onto the Connector at the light on Folly Road where the Connector ends. I passed her as she was driving in the left lane (my left lane, her right lane), and I flashed my lights at her repeatedly, but she just kept going....very tragic event.

Cedarposts makes a good point, from a pilot's perspective.
I visit my friends in Norway frequently (20-30 year olds) since I was a teenager. Over there, you cannot drink and drive; if you do, you go to jail AND pay STEEP fines. The result? All of my friends over there plan on having a DD or taking a cab. You can even drink in the car as long as you aren't driving.
Zero tolerance leaves zero ambiguity and zero chance for a courtroom throw-out.

I was in the car directly behind the Maynards, and as I out of my car, I witnessed the guys behind me running to the McCormick car, and all I could say " don't start there, they caused this " and over the last few days I keep remembering her face has she leaned back out of the steering wheel air bag, with no expression, even when I said " what the #### why the wrong way. "
Whereas it is not my place to judge or pass judgement, I sometimes wish in a definite court excusable rage I would have pulled her out of the car and thrown her over the railing to that water that lies below. Just to spare the family seeing her get a chance to be set free.
remembering it is not my place to judge others, nor condemn, and everything I am taught is to forgive, it all takes time. so it strikes me what could be or what should come from this or my experience.
And I have to say one thing that can be done, Stop people we know that are going to drive drunk. Roadblocks can not be everywhere, it would have been on the wrong side of the bridge to stop Amy. She came from James Island. Zero Tolerance is going to take years. But each and everyone of us sees and knows of friends that are going out drinking, with NO Plans how NOT to DRIVE DRUNK HOME.
Please people wake up and take responsiblity, Call out your drunk driving friends for the loser that they are, anytime that say that they don't know how they made it home. Take their keys and flush them or throw them. Better to live without that friendship that live with the guilt of Letting them out to KILL MURDER and inflict a lifetime of pain on the innocence.

Deepest Condolences to the Maynard Family and Friends. This was a senseless tragedy, and it is very sad that a good man is gone. It is times like these when we need to lean on our faith to be able to make it through. Also, thankfully, the F&B community is quite a tight-knit group in Charleston, and will be looking out for ways to assist the family. Nothing can ever replace Brett, but hopefully, knowing there is a huge extended "family" who will do anything to help alleviate anything possible will be some consolation somehow.
As for the criminal involved in this case, where is the follow-up? The community is clearly very interested in finding out what the outcome (short-term, at the very least) will be for this dangerous woman. We want more information now, and expect timely, responsible reporting from the P&C and other Charleston media outlets. Now is not the time to be sweeping things under the rug. You all need to dig deeper, and fast. A place to start--Is she driving around as we speak? Does her infant have survivable injuries? Can you post an accurate picture of her? Is there going to be a FIFTH opportunity for her to get away with this ridiculous and heinous behavior? We'll be looking for another article very soon. There's plenty to report on here and the family (clearly, most of all), your readers, and this community deserve answers.
