Prostitution persists despite police efforts
Some call them ladies of the evening, but they often can be found strolling the upper stretches of King Street well past dawn. And they're not all ladies.
As children trudged to three nearby schools one morning last week, a woman who admitted to working the streets chatted with a Charleston County schools crossing guard. A city councilman who lives nearby said he's had to chase male and female prostitutes off his porch.
"They used to be right in front of my door," said Charleston Councilman Robert Mitchell, who lives on King near Huger Street. "You see cars picking them up at night. Nice cars — you'd be surprised."
The odd mix of streetwalkers and school children has become part of the morning landscape on Upper King.
There are three schools in the area: James Simons Elementary, the Charleston Catholic School and the new Charleston Charter School for Math & Science.
City Councilman James Lewis said he received complaints around the end of last school year about teachers being solicited as they arrived for work.
Lewis lives nearby and said King Street between Race and Grove streets has been a trouble spot for some time.
"It's full of prostitution," he said. "Women and men."
As obvious as the prostitution is now, residents, civic leaders and school officials say things have gotten better.
Lewis and others, including North Central Neighborhood Association President Rev. Alma Dungee, credited a police crackdown with helping improve the situation since early summer.
"It really has been getting better," Dungee said. "The police officers are really working."
Yet Charleston police have tallied relatively few prostitution arrests during the past few years.
In 2007, they made 24 such arrests — an average of two per month— compared with 301 in North Charleston — almost one a day.
"I don't know why the numbers are so different," said Cpl. Tonatte Mitchell, a member of Charleston's vice squad, not related to Councilman Mitchell. "If we get a complaint, we do something about it."
Complaints spurred the arrest of two men on prostitution charges near King and Race streets in early August, as well as two others near Meeting and Huger streets in April. Tonatte Mitchell said the city made the arrests using a female decoy.
Street-level drug dealing seems to be a much greater concern for city residents, according to the vice officer.
"Prostitution is not high on the list," she said. "I don't think it compares to any of the drug complaints that we get."
Lewis said the two problems go hand in hand. "Anywhere you have drugs, you're going to have prostitution," he said.
Fred McKay, principal at Charleston Catholic, said that things were much worse a few years ago. He said police patrols have helped, though he doesn't consider it just a law-enforcement problem.
He's also worried about nearby boarded-up buildings that seem to attract a range of criminal activity.
"They've been very good about responding," he said. "I think it needs more attention, not only from the police perspective, but from a city perspective as a whole."
Lynn Owings, the new principal at Simons Elementary, said she wasn't aware of any problems but didn't work at the school last year.
Peter Smyth, principal at the School for Math & Science, did not return calls for comment.
Robert Mitchell, the city councilman, isn't sure where the prostitutes come from; he doesn't see them in the daytime.
"We've got to keep pushing to try and clean it up," he said. "They arrest them, maybe they pay a fine and they come back out and do it again."

Ah, this brings back fond memories...
I lived on Carolina Street a few years back, and had wonderful neighbors. They invited me to join them at the neighborhood association meeting, and I felt accepted. I was very surprised to hear the local beat cop's report on the neighborhood scene, as he gave the address and description of houses in the area that were known for either prostitution or drugs. I remember asking if they knew what was going on why they didn't do something, but got some answer about lack of money or manpower. He just suggested we not go near those houses, and left it at that. When I told my roomates that evening, they were shocked! At least we knew where the "market" was!

Could we take an honest look at this situation? If they REALLY want these women off the streets, they would impose more severe punishment after they are arrested.
Currently these women can be back on the streets plying their trade within hours after paying fines which goes into city coffers. This is not unique to Charleston, it is nationwide.
Where is the initiative to keep them off the streets when the these women are making money for the cities, their pimps and themselves?

I'm glad to see the police in the City of North Charleston working so hard to try to control prostitution.
They could take the easy way out, like the City of Charleston, and pretend its not going on there.

I don't think the men like to regard themselves as prostitutes. I call them hustlers. They'll perform a service--with a man or woman--for a fee. This is rampant in North Charleston.

Gay prostitutes? Next thing you will tell me gays rape little children and commit vicious serial killings.
If this state can legalize and regulate the consumption of the hallucinogenic alcohol, they can do the same for sex.
And the prostitutes, well at least the female ones, need to get together and march for this change in the law, because as long as women are split the way they are, men will always be on top.

It amazes me that where abortion is concerned the mantra is:
A woman should have the "right" to decide what to do with "her" body..when, in fact, the entity she is making a decision about is not her body but an entirely separate genetic human living being(yes, it is human, for it is not another species & it is alive).
Yet, this same woman cannot decide to use her body sexually to earn a living.
Ours laws. Gotta love 'em. So consistent. So logical.

If there were fifteen heterosexual men below Broad Street, there'd be 15 less repressed bleached blond church ladies below Broad Street. Its always been an open secret about Charleston. Anything goes below Broad, as long as it can be sweept quietly under the carpet.

I BELIEVE THEY NEED TO MAKE THE FINES HIGHER. ALSO ARRESTING THE PEOPLE TRYING TO PICKUP THE PROSTITUTES AND HAVING THEM PAY A SUBSTANTIAL FINE. THE FINES COULD OFFSET THE EXTRA OFFICERS NEEDED TO COMBAT THE PROBLEM. THE RESIDENTS OF THESE AREAS HAVE GOT TO COME TOGETHER AND TAKE THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS BACK. I BELIEVE THIS GOES HAND IN HAND WITH DRUG PROBLEMS.

Any cop who busts a prostitue is violating human rights and freedom of expression, well, unless they are having sex in public then they could be given a ticket for lewd conduct or indecent exposure. But other than that as long as all parties are Adults of legal age then what right does our corrupt gov't have making a law against it???

It's a fact that a revolution and full purge of our system needs to be done in order to fix anything. Lawyers would no longer be needed just advocates and Judges should and could dispence justice in a fair and equitable manner. The founding fathers of this country had a Libertarian vision for this country.
It has been hijacked by both parties. It is hard to place the blame on only one party.
There was a time when I thought that the modern day Democrats caused the most diversion from the initial vision. However, I believe that the Republicans have absolutely done their fair share of damage.
I have conservative leanings but I believe the biggest disgrace of the modern day Republicans is how intertwined they have allowed(or encouraged) corporations to become in policy making & law.
The melding of government & corporations=Corporatism=Fascism.
In case people have short memories or did not pay attention in history class: This is not good, folks.

Tell me RW, what is the matter? That is the cause of all of this anger? Did a liberal once break your heart? What is the matter, was you not “man” enough (wink, wink) for him or her?

RW, brother, I have to disagree. McCain is not the lesser of 2 evils but you are right to say that Obama is dangerous and that his supporters are a bit low in the IQ dept. (mine was last rated at 155) But i think some of that is because of the 'bandwagon effect' with his nomination. I'm not real sure we are ready as a nation for a black president BUT.... He may be what is needed to galvanize some changes and being a bit younger he may actually be more in touch with the current generatiuons needs and wants. Unfortunately all this will be for naught because if he does actually,.. does become super popular and starts to make changes that the rest of the power pimps don't like then...does anyone remember prez' Kennedy? Sucks to think like that but that is just how dirty our own gov't is. Pure cut throat.
dude, I would to sut at the bar a drink a beer while swapping stories. where do you hang out? I can be found at Blues house of wings on 41 and sometimes at Richards or Halligans.

take the case of the trailer trash whore who sued McDonalds for the hot coffee,
I don't think you can get aids but burning down your hosue but I see your point,,,however she was not a trailer trash whore, it was a 75 something old lady,,, now she very well may have been a whore at one time, but I don't know what she did for a living, but at that age I am sure she would be retired.

LMAO!!!!! i was just venting a bit and useing what i can pass for profanity here to get my point across. I used that example because it is readily recognized by most people. There are many, MANY more examples I'm sure that could be used. But that judge is definetly a candidate for a Darwin award, or at the very least should be.

I feel sorry for people who are now stuck trying to support and defend the Obama illusion of “Change and Hope”. Obama has proven he does not represent that which he was trying sell with his pick of Biden as VP. Obama has yet put out a creditable argument as how Biden represents change and hope,,, "Obama also missed an opportunity to do so earlier in the convention by trotting out all the Washington establishment folks (Clintons, Kennedy, Biden, ) as opposed to introducing and showcasing some of the newer, bright, young, up-and-coming "stars" of the democratic party." I could not agree with that more, except to say,, what up and coming “stars” in the Democratic Party?????
Obama has proven to me and millions of others,, that he is nothing more than a snake oil salesman trying to sell an empty bottle of B.S. I feel for those people who bought cases of Obama’s snake oil that now sits in the garage taking up space. Do yourselves a favor Obama supporters and pour Obama’s snake oil down the drain. Unfortunately Obama did not even have the foresight to package his snake oil in recyclable bottles. So now your stuck with the only choice but to take those empty bottles to an already overflowing land fill…..
Those sick twisted comments by Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore and Don Fowler says timing of Gustav is 'proof that there is a God in heaven' further support what that bunch is all about.
I only wish that sick bastard was left behind in New Orleans to be washed away with the rest of the garbage. Only an extreme lying liberals like them would make such statement. To wish a Hurricane on anyone shows this prick sick mind. ROT in hell pieces of sh!t
I would have to say the future of Obama's candidacy can be summed up with these great words,
It's like passing an accident on the highway - I don't WANT to look, but sometimes I look, and then I feel nauseous and hate myself for exposing myself to that.

tmh32,
These guys don't have a clue what free thinking is, they have been constantly spoon fed by their heroes, the Rush Limbaugh’s, Sean Hannity’s and Bill OReilly’s, so really you are just speaking Greek to them!

RW. well.... ok then. I still don't think i fit in that group but like I said, even when i was exposed to that political poisen all those terms really got me confused. I just really have a problem with people who use big words and half sayings to beat around the bush instead of just coming out and saying what they mean. politicaly correct??!! NOT. I will say what i want, when i want, about and to whome I want. The consitution, taken almost literaly, is the single greatest document we have. well might have to put it second to the Bible but that has been through so many revisions and translations it's hard to find the real truth. Although I believe i can sum it up with this most profound and wise saying.
" Be excellent to each other."

GBS now now be nice. You realy don't want to do that. trust me on this. I really do have to agree that alot of the Obama supporters seem to be a bit slow. OR are just on the bandwagon as I stated before. Me, I honestly don't believe even 20% of what ANY politician says. About the only honest well, as honest as one can be in that profession was Strom Thumond. he used to tell me the raunchiest jokes and made his aides walk at least 8 feet behind him. Old guy spoke his mind and stuck to his guns. Him I respected.

Generalizations are usually a sign of lack of intelligence, and you did make a sweeping generalization… but then again so is arrogance. I’m just saying.

Is it ok to make a sweeping generalizations about whores??

I am wondering if Whores can fall into categories?
That whore Michael Moore would fall into the lowest form of such unimaginable sh!t to don't even want to think of.
Does anyone want to defend what the filthy pig sh!t whore said? The fat whore is what gives liberals a bad name,, among other things. He should be run out of the country. He has no support for this country other then making a dishonest buck with his pack of lies so called Documentaries.

What would some of you say is the best or most significant accomplishment of this conservative administration. I mean they did follow an evil, liberal administration. So, exactly what has this adnistration of nearly 8 years (and its conservative congress of nearly 6 years before this current useless congress) done to right the sinister deeds of their predecessors?
Posted by guidedbystewart on August 31, 2008 at 8:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Nope I didn't abitskptical, I did use the term usually, which means there are the ones that use generalizations to cover up their inadequacies , insecurities, and any thing else to make themselves seem superior to the ones they are arguing with. So, RW, what are you inadequacies? Would you like to share?

So where did you go to school RW? Hillbilly Tech? So, you were a wressler? Why? Were you trying out for the WWF or was it just because you liked playing grab ass?

come on guided -- don't stoop to his level. name calling is obviously for the "right"eous. be strong and secure in your beliefs, which you have every right to, and let RW remind you of why you have those beliefs, and not those of the "other" side with every crass insult he hurls.

RW, you poor lost soul,
I can't believe that you think that your generic insults have any effect on anyone outside of you; they've simply lost their steam. You just come across as bitter and dissatisfied with your own life.
I just can't help but love the irony in a single post where you call GBS gay (because that's so obviously an insult) and then admit to rolling around on the floor in a tight, sweaty embrace with another man while wearing spandex...
Bless your little ol' heart...

Johnq -- will you please stop calling johndoe45 gay? it hurts his feelings, and it's just not nice. surely we can all continue to discourse without the pettiness...
JD45 -- How was that?
Seriously. How is being called gay an insult? If you are insulted by that, does it make you a homophobe? a bigot?

oh, yeah. you sure got one up on JQ.
I keep trying to tell you people that I am not a liberal. It must be my tolerence and open-mindedness that throws you off. Don't have anyone mistaking me for a conservative!!!
I am very much a middle-of-the-road independent. Fiscally conservative, yet socially liberal. My, what a paradox. Someone who thinks for herself...
