Tigers' ground game grinds to halt as Alabama swamps Clemson

Alabama’s Mark Ingram (22) and the 24th-ranked Crimson Tide hurdled past the No. 9 Clemson Tigers on Saturday night in the Georgia Dome.
ATLANTA — Clemson will take home a cool $2 million for playing Saturday's highly anticipated showdown against Alabama.
The No. 9 Tigers would probably give it all back to purge the memory of a positively devastating 34-10 defeat at the hands of the No. 24 Crimson Tide in front of a packed Georgia Dome — not to mention a national television audience that tuned in to see if this Clemson team was indeed for real.
The Tigers looked unfit for this kind of stage against this kind of team, and Alabama looked right at home. The Crimson Tide was dominant, taking a 23-3 lead into halftime and continuing the throttling in the second half.
"We got whipped every way you can get whipped offensively and defensively," said 10th-year coach Tommy Bowden. "I don't think we've been beaten that bad physically in the last three years — at least the last three years."
Clemson came into this game seeking validation, not annihilation. But that's exactly what Alabama administered, beating the Tigers up, down and out of their first top 10 ranking since 1991.
When Alabama chanted "SEC" for about the 10th time with less than five minutes left, the noise reverberated off the thousands of empty seats Clemson's fans had vacated. The Tigers suffered their worst loss since a 45-17 hammering at Wake Forest in 2003.
It was bad enough for Clemson that its offense, celebrated for its array of dazzling skill players, was shut down. The Tigers totaled 188 yards, zero on the ground.
That's right, zero. James Davis had
six carries for 13 yards, and C.J. Spiller had two runs for 7 yards.
Making it much worse was a defense that put up little resistance against Alabama's unstoppable blend of running and passing. The Crimson Tide rushed for 239 yards, and senior quarterback John Parker Wilson completed 22 of 30 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
"Obviously, we're not the ninth-rated team in the country," Bowden said.
For the Crimson Tide, this resounding victory signaled that brighter days are ahead under second-year coach Nick Saban. Alabama finished 7-6 in Saban's first season, including an unthinkable home loss to Louisiana-Monroe. But Saban had all offseason to prepare for this one.
"They came and they whipped our butts on both sides of the line of scrimmage," said Clemson center Thomas Austin. "We didn't play with a sense of urgency like we should have. I'm embarrassed."
After Alabama drove 67 yards in a punishing 14-play touchdown drive to take a 31-10 lead with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter, the Crimson Tide had outgained Clemson 337-96.
"We ran it right at them," said Saban, whose team was 11-of-17 on third-down conversions to 1-of-9 for Clemson.
Spiller accounted for 96 yards by himself with a kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half. And, of that meager offensive output for the Tigers, 53 came on one play - a first-quarter pass from Cullen Harper to Jacoby Ford.
"We never established control of the game at any point," Bowden said. "When a kickoff return is the highlight of your offensive production, that's not very good."
Things began turning sour for the Tigers on the third play from scrimmage, when junior defensive end Ricky Sapp went down with a knee injury while chasing a running play.
Sapp returned a few plays later, but only briefly.
That wasn't the only injury for the Tigers in the first half. Junior right guard Barry Humphries suffered a knee injury late in the second quarter and didn't return, further thinning an already thin offensive line. He took in the rest of the game on crutches, redshirt freshman Mason Cloy taking his place.
Ford absorbed a second-quarter hit leaping for a pass and also didn't return, taking away some of the Tigers' big-play potential on offense.
But injuries weren't the story of this game. Not even close.
Alabama was remarkably balanced on offense, setting up a precision play-action passing game with a gashing, slashing running attack. The Crimson Tide had three scoring drives of 14 plays or more, and tailback Mark Ingram and Glen Coffee combined for 186 yards rushing on 34 carries.
Much of Wilson's work was done against the Tigers' inexperienced linebackers. With plenty of time to throw, he was able to take his time and find his receivers over the middle and on the sidelines.
When Ingram was dropped for a 1-yard loss with less than nine minutes left in the game and his team driving for yet another score, it represented an accomplishment for the Tigers' defense: Alabama's first negative-yardage play of the game.
Clemson had to abandon its running game early because its offensive line couldn't open holes for its star tailbacks. Harper finished with 188 yards passing on a 20-of-34 clip with an interception.
"They just came out and dominated us, and we didn't make plays when we had to," Harper said.
The Tigers have lost their last four trips to Atlanta. They dropped an overtime defeat to Auburn last year in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, and they've lost their last two games at Georgia Tech.
"Obviously we have a long way to go," Bowden said. "I have to start with myself and look down."

My conservative daughter, a recent college graduate from Clemson, is in Atlanta for the big game this weekend. Upon leaving the Ga. Dome(wishing she had sold her tickets on e-bay), she called to tell us two things:
1) It will be TOO soon when she hears "Roll Tide!" again; and
2) She would be less embarrassed if she ran naked through Buckhead --- she said the game was more embarrassing than it looked on TV.

What a disappointing appearance for Clemson fans. What Happened!!!!!??????? Mr. Bowden and his coaches have orchestrated the worst performance I've seen from Clemson in a many, many years.
So, since I'm married to a Citadel grad whose uncle once coached there, I think I know what team I should pull for next week. I still love my alma mater, but next week, it's ...... Go Dogs!

"James Davis had six carries for 13 yards, and C.J. Spiller had two runs for 7 yards" Two of the best backs in football and they ran the ball 8 times between the two of them. Something is wrong at Clemson. This sounds like a repeat of last year. Their offense never clicks.
I WATCHED THIS GAME IN AMAZEMENT THAT CLEMSON LOOKED THAT BAD. BUT BAMA IS NO PUSH OVER FOR ANYONE. AND WITH SABAN IT WAS A MATTER OF WHEN NOT IF HE WOULD TURN THAT PROGRAM AROUND. BAMA HAS FOUND THE NEXT BEAR. AND THEY HAVE BEEN SEARCHING SINCE HE DIED!

Thank goodness the talk about a national championship run...hahaha...will mercifully end. "Clemson this, Clemson that" "Bama will get rolled, yada yada and yap" all week. Guess they can go back and prepare for the powerhouse that is SC State.
I wouldn't expect anything less from a school in a state that defines mediocrity and embraces it like a warm blanket.

Where is bigriver and islandgirl this morning???? I will go out on a limb and say we will not see anything from them today. Typical Clemson bombthrowers. They love bashing Carolina and overlook the short comings of thier own team. IO loved it last night. I thought Bowden was going to cry. Maybe Clemson can bounce back next week against the Citadel.
Hey Clemson fans just think you do not have to play another SEC team until the end of the year.
Thunder and Lightning. what a joke.
bigriver- since you are such the recruiting expert is it wise to promise the first carry of the year to someone when you have Davis and Spiller? Great move Tammy.
Maybe last night had something to do with Karma. You can't allow your players to beat up women with no consequences whatsoever. IT just sets a bad example.
Thank you to the Tigers for making my weekend and showing the country once again that the ACC is a second tier conference. All of the talking heads sure did notice.

LOL. why would a sc fan call out anyone? Clemson will beat sc like ALWAYS, if Clemson is that bad what does it say about sc? The sec is the best conference, no doubt but sc does not help. How many wins does sc have against Ga, Tenn, and Fla. since joining the sec? I had Clemson vs Oklahoma in the nc game but sorry Tigers. Looks like usc (the real one) vs the Sonners. Clemson you guys need to fire the o-line coach TODAY! That was pitiful. Tigers looks like 8-4, 9-3 and a beat down of sc as usual.

bigriver1... you are such a tool. Your words carry about as much weight as Clemson's NC title hopes. "but sc does not help" huh? Didn't SC just beat your ACC brethren 34-0?

bigMOUTHriver,
I'm a Carolina fan. With that said, I know we have our struggles against Clemson year after year. However, my biggest problem with Clemson is that they and EVERYONE else out there thinks they are some powerhouse team with all kinds of weapons on offense and defense. Everyone just loves to talk them up. Last night proved that they are NOT a powerhouse team and when they do play a team that actually has talent and is not usually on their cupcake schedule, they can't pull it out. Last years bowl game proved that and last night most certainly proved it too.
If all you've got today is some lame-azz jab at "what does that say about sc?" then you've got nothing today. Yeah, we know- but you know what? We actually WON our first game.
Don't worry though, the next 5 or so cupcake games should make your kittykats feel like a powerhouse again. Please.
Oh, and.... ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEC, SEC, SEC!!!

Thunder and lightning? Neph says it looked more like DRIZZLE AND FIZZLE.
Can anyone explain Clemsons inconsistancy?
Posted by notafan on August 31, 2008 at 9:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)
You can't fire the O line coach that is Brad Scott, Clemson's chosen boy.
Bigriver- now Clemson can get a taste of what it feels like to play top tier competition almost every week. Bama was not even a top tier SEC school. Can you imagine what the score would have been if Clemson had played Georgia, Florida, LSU, or Tenn???
How many times has Clemson beat Georgia, Florida and Tenn? Never. That's right because Clemson will not play them. They pick one of the middle of the pack SEC schools to play and got throttled.
Don't worry Clemson gets to beat up on the Citadel and the rest of the ACC here in the next few weeks.
Maybe they should have sat the woman beater. Maybe it was karma. Eitherway it made my weekend. Thanks Tommy "nose picker" Bowden.

Quite the illustration of how the SEC teams are vastly superior to the teams that the ACC are fielding yet again this year. Clemson is a good team, and what appears to be the flagship team in the ACC. However, even the middle of the road SEC team will give them all they can handle on the field...any field at any time.
Clemson should do better against the Citadel next week. It should be a pretty competitive game and one the Tiger and Bulldog fans will enjoy. I can't remember, what bowl games have Clemson been to and won in the last several years? Maybe one of the Tiger folks could remind me.
Another question...What bowl games have the Oklahoma Whooners been to...and won in the last four or five years? anyone...anyone...

Clemson lost to an SEC team. Can they brag about that like Carolina does?
The SEC is the best conference. Clemson got whipped. None of that gives SC fans any reason to talk given that the USC/Clemson rivalry is so one-sided.

Clemson looked plain disinterested last night. No emotion, no fire, no grit, just lots of long faces. And that's the BEST team in the ACC, supposedly?? Do you think Terry Don Phillips is reconsidering the extension he gave to Tommy B??
And can someone tell me what in the world Cullen Harper was thinking when he made that underhand throw on the 4th down? That's your SENIOR QB??? I say it's Willie time...
Alas, relax, CU will have dessert for the next three weeks after starting off with Red (well, Crimson, meat)
...The Citadel, SC State, NC State...
Here's a thought for the ACC...stick to hoops...your teams were embarrassments this week (NC St, CU, Va Tech)!!
And who would have thought after the first week of the season DUKE...yes, DUKE, has a better record (1-0) than CU (0-1)?
For us in the SEC (I'm an UGA fan!!) Alabama looks SCARY good! Saban may have them in the top-10 before it's over...
...and remember 'Bama is a Middle of the Pack SEC team. Not even mentioned in the same category with the UGA's, UF's, LSU's, and Auburn's...that may change now!!
...but it is early...

Bigdouche, who are the Sonners? You know as much about football as Sapakoff, who is the one who should be fired today. The O line coach at Clemson isn't the one who is responsible for the hang dog look Clemson had all night. Nice game plan, give Spiller and Davis the ball a combined 8 times the whole game. I am sure they will light it up against the Citadel and SC State and we will have to hear over and over how good they are. Keep running you mouth, no one in SC cares about the Sonners.

Posted by uscbmc on August 31, 2008 at 10:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Old news my friend...and not relevant to me, the team, BCS standings or any other standard. Nice reading and really all that OK has to talk about since they cant seem to put it together on the field in a game that matters.
Maybe some would hang their hat on what they did many many moons ago but that does not win games this year. I could care less what they did back in "the day" of Barry Switzer and Bud Wilkinson. That is old news and history. Not going to win a championship for them today.
Seems to me that the rest of the teams in the big 12 have pretty much caught up with them since Bobby Stoops took over. So have the teams in the WAC (Boise State), Pac 10 (So. Cal), Big East (WVA) and SEC (LSU). I think they have pretty much handed it to the whooners in recent bowl history.
Maybe Bobby Stoop's boys will get it together this year. I will be checking in with them at the end of the year to see how they shake out of their conference.
Get back to your book report. I think it is due on Tuesday.

Well Clemson got a taste of what it is like to play in a real conference. Clemson recruits top tier players, but they end up mediocre on the field. Remember the last time Clemson beat a top 20 team? I don't. They only had 3 wins against division one teams with winning records last year (one of which was over Central Michigan). Bowden has had ten years at Clemson and this is the best he can do? Maybe they should fire Bowden, or Clemson fans might prefer joining the Southern Conference. Big time chokers.

I can not see how anyone would say Clemson is respected nationally. Yes, they have won titles but, they also cheated to get those titles, that is an important fact to remember.
Although USC won, it is obvious that we have a lot of work to do on offense. But, unlike Clemson fans, we are not the ones claiming to be on the verge of greatness as some have used on this board. The game last night showed how far Clemson is from being good. That makes them 1-5 against the SEC since 2006 and the one win was against an injury depleted (5 defensive starters) USC team on a last second field goal, hardly getting "punked".
Clemson will go on to have a good season, possibly win the ACC title for what that is worth but, they are light years away from being great. As for USC, we'll see. They have beaten UGA, UT and UF since Spurrier has arrived but, not all in the same season. We will need a QB if we can expect to beat them anytime soon.

When will Bowden be held accountable if not by a press who has an obligation to report what needs to be reported...good & BAD...Please ...no more lies! I personally am glad that we finally get to the part of our schedule that gives us the best chace to win and let Harper & co. finally get the stats that you & others choose to highlight...Did Davis or Spiller actually even want the ball last night? notafan, Alabama can and will hold their own this year against Georgia, Florida, etc., etc. They will play Georgia, Tennesses, LSU and Auburn, do you think they will go into the game cowering at such big (so-called) powerhouse?
This is on the Tide's website:
The Crimson Tide have won 12 straight against Clemson, although the team’s hadn’t met since 1975 when the late Bryant laid a 56-0 humiliation on the Tigers.
Maybe Alabama and Saban will soon have more in common with the Bear’s championship teams........
I for one believe that if left alone Saban will rebuild Alabama to the powerhouse that the Bear had....one game doesn't make a championship team but it let's the "Big Boys' know that Bama is on the front porch and prepared to stay there....

O, Nada, nothing yards rushing from the "Thunder and Lighting" crew. What a waste of talent. We'll play the freshman though. The bumbling Son of Bowden II should explain the comment about putting the pressure on his line instead of himself to win the game.
They looked like a bunch of individuals on the team. People were ready to anoint them as ACC champs. Maybe with the "strength of the All but Competitive Conference" cupcakes, they can back door their way into a BCS game they can call themselves champs.
Spiller should have gone to Florida instead of being hood winked by the cult at Clemson.

Different year, better talent, same coach, same story. Tommy Bowden seems like a smart guy, but not an emotional one, and he can't seem to motivate young men emotionally. They are after all teenagers and in their early 20's. I have said before and I say again, Tommy Bowden went into the family business, but he is better suited to a more staid profession. Young people want to be inspired, not just taught. Tom Landry was reserved, but he could still inspire and lead.
I am an SC guy, but it is a shame that the talent displayed on the one kickoff return for a TD has to be limited by bad coaching and no motivation. At the start of the secound half, Clemson had scored and the defense had held twice, but players were still sitting down and not barking encouragement to their teammates on the field. That's when team leaders step up, encourage and, yes, kick a little butt when necessary. Teams reflect the personality of their coach, and Coach Bowden, unfortunately, does not have the personality of a champion.

It was too funny that Clemson didn't have their post game call in show last night and after the game their sportscasters were giving every score in the country except the game they just broadcast - guess they are still in denial. And they closed down their message boards - guess the Clemson fans were calling in and wanting to can Tommy and his whole staff - my how the tables turn after an embarrassing loss - and the Post and Courier is just as bad - the game stats were so bad that they didn't even publish them in the paper and Burger wrote one of his "I'm mad with Clemson because they embarrassed me" columns- he'll start feeling the love for them again once they beat down a few mediocre teams again; after all he did have kids who went to school there. What a big bunch of turncoats and whiners!!! Not to mention that most of the fans were bailing out of the Georgia Dome before the end of the third quarter. hey big river.........is that the best you can do........the SEC as a whole dominated the ACC this week....not to mention the supposed #2 in your league (VT) just went down to a team from Conference USA. Your sorry ass conference can't hold a candle to the SEC, and Clemson would finish 4th or 5th at best in the SEC East.
We take care of business against the ACC....we are 3-1 over the last 3 years, while you are 1-4 against the SEC. That is an apples to apples comparison, and you make your conference look pathetic! Clemson is SUPPOSED to be the BEST TEAM IN THE ACC!!!!
Oh, and you can't spell worth a damn either. Have a great day! GO SEC! AND GO GAMECOCKS!!!!!

big river, people like you should have just kept quiet today. Maybe you will get a chance to talk some smack when you are playing SC State and the Citadel, and we are playing real teams like Georgia and Florida and Tennessee.

Don't give up on them yet! We lost to Miss St., and La. Monroe last year. Our guys played a GREAT game yesterday, but Clemson is a great program as well. The Tigers will fix the problems and get back in the hunt. next couple weeks will allow the fire to return. Good Luck, enjoyed the class of your fans in Atlanta! Roll Tide Roll...proud to be a part of SABEARNATION!

I can't believe that I'm defending Oklahoma, but I would be willing to bet that OU would dominate either Clemson or SC this year, and the Sooners may have had a rough go in their bowl games over the last couple years, but at least they have been there. Can't say much for SC and Clemson who have a total of 1 national championship between them.

MeeeOooooW ! Thats gotta hurt. . .
Plain and simple. . . that was just a Bama azz whoopin!
Blunder and Frightning are a complete joke. . .
Where was the CU's super Defense? backing up 5 and 6 yards a play thats where. . . 9 total yard for spilt and dilt LOL! How freakin embarrassing to get roasted by a middle of the pack SEC team in prime time TV and then have more annoucers tell the nation how pathetic the Average Coast Conference is. Daammmmmmmm! ! ! Even if the tiggers could win every game from here on out. (which they won't) a BCS birth is out of the question. I can here the tiggers prayers being offered up now just hoping and praying that Bama ends up in the top 10 so tigger fans can drink more orange kool-aid and justify that Bama Azz-Whooping. . .
Face it! CU has great talent, but with sorry azz coaches like little tommy and Fat Brad and the Lab Rat's poor play calling, you will only a 2nd rate acc team. Fire Tammy !

Thunder and Lightning has now been renamed...
Fart and Match
What a miserable performance. An absolute, total butt whoopin' and I loved every minute of it. I hope the Citadel whoops em too!

let's talk about 2008 and not 1990, blueline.
Yes we lost to the Citadel in 1990..........you lost to Duke a couple years back...........who cares?
Let's talk about NOW. And RIGHT NOW, Clemson is over-rated, and the ACC as a whole SUCKS ROYALLY! Your league's biggest win this week: Duke over James Madison. CONGRATULATIONS! Great job, ACC!!!!!!
