S.C. voices offer praise, criticism

Palmetto State Republicans who make up John McCain's base here like the idea of a Vice President Sarah Palin.

Other observers say the choice carries some risk.

S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell, one of McCain's South Carolina co-chairs, called the Alaska governor an outstanding pick as running mate.

"She's a conservative lady who has executive experience, and I could not be happier with his choice," he said Friday. "He picked a conservative reformer, somebody very similar to himself in terms of philosophy. I'm looking forward to meeting her next week."

Lowcountry Republicans would have been less enthusiastic about two other possibilities, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, both of whom support abortion rights. The choice of Palin, an abortion opponent, seems certain to create more unity in Minnesota during next week's Republican National Convention.

South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson previously said he is firmly in the anti-abortion camp, "and I would have some concerns in a nominee that was not, but that being said, it's John McCain's pick." He called Palin "a tremendous pick."

McCain supporter Mark Hartley acknowledged that Ridge or Lieberman, while great guys, could have caused strain in the base. "I think that absent a very controversial pick that the entire party is going to be behind whoever we choose," Hartley said.

Former state Rep. John Graham Altman said after he watched Palin speak, he called his wife, Charm, as she was driving to the convention in Minnesota. "I told her to turn around and come back. We've got this election won," he said.

The pick of Palin drew flak from House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., who told South Carolina ETV radio that the choice of Palin "would be something similar to Dan Quayle," President George H.W. Bush's vice president widely considered to be an unhelpful choice.

Clyburn also noted that Democratic contender Walter Mondale chose Geraldine Ferraro as his vice presidential pick in 1984, and "she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful. And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left."

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint praised Palin for her work cutting wasteful spending, opposing earmarks and tackling corruption in her own party. He also said she "knows we must aggressively pursue American energy sources like offshore drilling to reduce our dependence on foreign oil."

College of Charleston political communication professor Mike Lee described Palin as a high-risk, high-reward pick.

Lee said the choice bolsters McCain's reputation as an independent thinker and not someone bound to President Bush, as Democrats are trying to portray him. Also, her social conservatism solidifies the base.

On the other hand, she's unlikely to have much influence in a large swing state and will face a stern test debating the more-experienced Democratic vice presidential candidate, Sen. Joe Biden. Also, the Alaska Legislature has launched a $100,000 investigation to see if she dismissed Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire a state trooper who had gone through a messy divorce from Palin's sister. Palin has said she welcomes the investigation: "Hold me accountable."

"I see a lot of upside and a lot of downside, and a lot of this remains to be seen," Lee said. "I don't doubt that a lot of people were surprised, and a lot of Americans are still shaking their heads and wondering why she was chosen."

So you are saying an IF situation which would install someone with 2 years experience as a state govenor is not as good as immeadiately installing someone "with virtually no experience in government" ?

Seriously, it takes a lot of courage for a man to be willing to take on dealing with two women of that high caliber! Now I will not be holding my nose while voting McCain. Suddenly I feel positive for the future.

JohnDoe,

Ponder the quandary democrats now face in in terms of how they choose to attack Palin. Every criticism of youth and inexperience they try to pin on Palin, the vice presidential candidate, exists for their presidential candidate.

This was a very deft choice on McCain's part, and the timing impeccable! If nothing else, because she is little known, a lot of undecided voters and disaffected Hillary-ites will be giving his candidacy a second look.

It's shaping up to be an exciting race!

David Broder has a great column today about the overall ineffectiveness of Obama's acceptance speech. Check it out.

Among other things, he points out how Obama really missed an opportunity to underscore his message as the candidate of hope and change by sounding many of the tried and true liberal nanny state promises. Obama also missed an oportunity to do so earlier in the convention by trotting out all the Washington establishment folks (Clintons , Kennedy, Biden...)as opposed to introducng and showcasing some of the newer, bright, young, up-and-coming "stars" of the democratic party.

She has been in politics since 88 (I think that was the year) and has worked her way up through the ranks, defeating popular incumbants.

This IS going to be good.....Now I REALLY want to know where I can pick up a bumper sticker!!! Anyone?????

Some people are saying McCain only met her twice and how do you get to know someone after two meetings? When I saw Palin and heard her speak, saw her accomplishments, I saw in her the real deal, genuine, approachable - I like her.

I think she has great potential and could do the job of commander in chief if the inevitable happened to McCain as she would have plenty of advisers surrounding her, just like Obama would.

However, I will say this, If McCain-Palin ticket wins, we still have gridlock as the Democrats will have control of Congress. Either McCain has to compromise or see his vetoes overridden by the Democrats.

If Obama wins, Americans will finally get a dose of how socialistic he and his party are and after two years, will vote many out of office, just like they did during Clinton's era.

And if enough Americans really want change, knowing, too, that Republicans have already proven they can drop the ball when they have control, then maybe the independent or third party candidates will have more attraction for I believe we need a third party.

No matter what, this will be historic for America.

Exactly, Coldbeer. The Obama supporters can't credibly use the inexperience argument of McCain's vp to their advantage without reinforcing their presidential candidate's inexperience as well. The only argument they have in this regard is touting the 'if then' factor; i.e., that if McCain dies in office, then we'd have an inexperienced president, versus the certainty of an inexperienced president should their candidate win.

As I said in an earlier post, this pick puts the democrats in quite a quandary.

This is a master stroke on McCain's part, sounding many of Obama's own themes against him.

Yes, that is going to turn off allot moderates and social liberals (like myself) and places like California are now more likely to go Democrat. For the South it may be a good thing, but that's not where McCain should worry about. Though this might work well in the Midwest. Good strategic move? amylrod (anonymous) says...

I think the dems will hold both houses of Congress since a handful of Republicans are not running, and people like Henry Brown will not get my vote, (nor will I vote for Ketner) nor will I vote for Graham ( a no vote) and I expect he will still win since again, people refuse to look at the man but the party.

I am sick of both of them and so are many others. When Dems drop the ball, their supporters still vote for them because they, too, look at the party, not the man. Dems only want to be in power so they can see their constituents kowtow before them, keeping them enslaved to their party.

Dems are the masters, the people are the slaves. IT won't change until everyone experiences loss of freedom, rights, and see their income taxed beyond anything anyone could ever have imagined. It won't be pretty.

I would not call JohnQ insane,, he has shown a rational side at times,,

I do how ever disagree with his politics and I kind of feel sorry that he and others are now stuck trying to support and defend the Obama illusion of "Change and Hope". Obama has now proven he does not represent that which he was trying sell with his pick of Biden as VP. Obama has yet put out a creditable argument as how Biden represents change and hope,,, "Obama also missed an opportunity to do so earlier in the convention by trotting out all the Washington establishment folks (Clintons, Kennedy, Biden, ) as opposed to introducing and showcasing some of the newer, bright, young, up-and-coming "stars" of the democratic party." I could not agree with that more, except to say,, what up and coming "stars" in the Democratic Party?????

Obama has proven to me and millions of others,, that he is nothing more than a snake oil salesman trying to sell an empty bottle of B.S. I feel for those people who bought cases of Obama's snake oil that now sits in the garage taking up space. Do yourselves a favor Obama supporters and pour Obama's snake oil down the drain. Unfortunately Obama did not even have the foresight to package his snake oil in recyclable bottles. So now your stuck with the only choice but to take those empty bottles to an already overflowing land fill:..

I would have to say the Obama bunch blew it....they blew it..They had their chance and they blew it. No actually I do not think he even had a chance but,,,, the future of Obama's candidacy can be summed up with these great words,

It's like passing an accident on the highway - I don't WANT to look, but sometimes I look, and then I feel nauseous and hate myself for exposing myself to that.

The tasoring and moose poaching were officially investigated and confirmed.

Come on, if you had a brother-in-law like that, who was also a state trooper, wouldn't you want someone in authority to know about his bizarre, violent and illegal behavior?

I'm sure she hated the guy, but I don't think you can play this off as simple petty revenge. The guy does sound scary. As governor, was she just supposed to keep her mouth shut and hope he didn't eventually kill someone?

It's amusing to hear all of the rhetoric regarding Palin. Yet the Republican "clean machine" won't let anyone forget how the Clinton/Lewinsky affair threatened National Security.

When Phil Gramm talks of a "Mental Recession and a Nation of Whiners", he is merely stating the obvious reflection of the Republican Party. That's what happens when you're desperate, just ask the McPalin hopefuls. The only votes that the McPalin ticket receives will be from privileged and wealthy men who have married the actual Stepford wives.

Otherwise, no free thinking middle class American in their right mind would be foolish enough to ask/vote for another "McBush" Term.

Just saw Sen. Chris Dodd on CNN being so outrageous in his political propaganda concerning Gustav, Katrina & the Repub. convention, that even the generally liberal CNN talking heads took exception to what he said & distanced themselves from his petty & agenda driven point of view.

Well...wouldn't this be some good fodder for McCain ads, i.e., see how low the democrats will stoop?

Character does matter.

MooMoo,

I see democrats angry and righteous all the time, but never embarassed or ashamed. Might have happened I just never saw it.

BTW another plus for Palin. On one Sunday morning news show John Kerry was astounded, "she doesn't even believe human beings cause global warming!!!". That is an accurate quote. Now I'm not sure about global warming one way or the other. But until mankind can at least stop hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc., we sure as he!! don't control global warming. China shows how you can really mess up specific areas, but the arrogance of humans controling global warming? Just another fear tactic to gain votes from the weak and fearfull.

TC1,

I see what you mean about the righteousnes and anger, and I see it too. At the core of the liberal belief system is a basic lack of faith in people's ability to tke care of themselves and solve their own problems. Also, they want to perpetuate government dependence because it's what keeps them in power. They are also typically are very emotional in their thinking; that's why you see so many stoop to name calling, insults, and emotional diatribes when asked the tough questions or when their illogic is pointed out to them.

That being said, I applaud those who keep their cool and can debate rationally. One poster here who usually fits that criteria is GuidedbyStewart. Another in the public arena is Juan Williams of NPR, believe it or not! He is at least resonable. I suspect most of these folks have some leftist tendencies but are more to the center politically.

What happened to all the libs on this board? Are they in group therapy or shock therapy? It's going to be interesting to watch how they're going to carry the water for the Obama bin Biden ticket.

As an independent(albeit w/ conservative leanings), I can say that I have seen the disrespect & immature name calling na-nanny-boo-boo stuff coming from loyals in both camps.

The following comments pertain to forums other than this one, because on here the score of bad behavior coming from both sides seems to be about even.

It does seem, as I watch & listen in other forums, that there is more of an arrogance coming from many liberals about the "stupidity" &/or intelligence of those who do not follow their political ideal & agenda.

This has always struck me as interesting since the democrats like to see themselves as the party of tolerance, respect for others etc.

The arrogance spills over into the attitude that most everyone is too stupid or inept to understand what is best for themselves & the country.

Despite dressing this idea up as care & concern, it often reveals itself for what it is when discussions about differing politics emerge.

This is not true all of the time of course. I have friends who are yellow dog democrats & they try to put their "money where their mouth is" & walk the walk, so when they express their disdain for a conservative view point, I smile & tell them I love them anyway.....

abitskeptical,

Your observations express perfectly my observations. But, I was unable to say it so well and calmly. Beyond the obvious their attitude is so infuriatingly insulting to anyone that doesn't agree. Yes, tolerance & diversity is their big strong point, sure, yea, I'll respect you in the morning :)
