Motorcycle and car collision takes two lives

Saturday, August 30, 2008

A horrific collision in Ladson between a motorcycle and a car instantly took the lives of the drivers of both vehicles, authorities said.

The 1 p.m. accident on Ladson Road shut down a section of the road for several hours while investigators worked the scene.

Killed were Thomas Scott Igoe, 25, of Delmars Highway in Summerville, and Willodean Aldrich, 88, of Ladson. Igoe, who was known by his middle name of Scott, was driving the motorcycle, and Aldrich was driving the car, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said.

Nisbet said the motorcycle had passed the Midland Parkway intersection, headed west toward Dorchester Road, when the car pulled from a parking area outside Aldrich’s apartment and onto Ladson Road. Igoe applied his front-wheel brakes, which caused the rear wheel to raise up and catapult the motorcycle and Igoe toward the car.

Nisbet said the motorcycle and its driver struck the car’s driver’s side, at the area where the front and back doors meet. The impact sent both the motorcycle and its driver into the car, where Igoe and Aldrich died of multiple trauma.

Authorities arrived and found the motorcycle’s wheels extruding from the car and its seat and upper part jammed inside the car, he said.

He said passersby stopped and called for help, but there was nothing anyone could do to save either life.

Everyone needs to be more careful and check twice for motorcycles. With prices of everything rising, there are more bikers on the roads. PLEASE be more careful and make sure that there isn't a bike present when you pull out onto the road.
