Police officer assaulted

Staff report
Thursday, August 28, 2008

Two students are accused of assaulting a Charleston police officer Tuesday at James Island Charter High School.

The officer told two students in the school courtyard about 3:30 p.m. to move along, a police report said. One student pushed him and another punched him in the cheek, according to the report. It also that said one student tried to grab his gun.

Faculty and staff helped the officer place the students under arrest, the report said.

Jasmine Smalls, 17, and a 15-year-old student are charged with assault on a police officer, the report said. The younger student was released into her parents' custody.

These two should not be allowed to return to public school and forced to attend a military school for teen thugs!

Bunch of lowlife idiots. This is the SINGLE reason why the education system is in such trouble. Now, you know that these two young darlings didn't just wake up that morning and decide to punch a police officer and try to take his gun. I'm sure they have a long list of offenses as well as parents that have defended them all the way (read, made excuses for them, told them they don't have to take anything off of anyone, agreed with them when they told their lies about how the teachers/administrators and other school personnel have lied on them and they didn't really do what they where accused of, etc.).

I know how to control my child and with every bit of certainty I can say......he would have messed up once, maybe twice but it would have ended there. He would not have progressed to the point that he assaulted a officer.

Parents.....you birthed em.....now take care of the problem!

For the rest of the parents reading this....here is a clue (if it applies). The next time your child gets in trouble at school and they tell you something stupid like "All I did was answer a question and she told me to get out of the room" or "I was just getting up to sharpen my pencil" or other such nonsense, don't believe a word of it.

I've seen more parents than I can count actually fall for stupid stuff like that and then try to defend their child's behavior. GET A CLUE!

And before you ask: Yes, I do feel a bit better now that I got that off my chest.....thanks.

10216340, I agree with you whole heartedly. I never buy any of that crap "oh, it wasn't me it was really Johnny", or "all I was doing was asking a simple question". My son now knows that he can't pull that crap with us anymore, and he admits if he has done something wrong. I am teaching him NOW to be accountable for his actions. I don't buy into that whole "woe is me" song and dance for a minute.

I'll bet this isn't the first time these two have been in trouble. As far as being "lost souls" they may be lost but it is only because they choose to be. They need to get lost out of the public school system.

HeyZeus, you've got problems. In your terms, the officer HAD forgiven them by asking them to simply move along. The kids balked at his "forgiveness" and attacked him instead.

Stay in your dream word and keep reading your bible or whatever it is you do all day long. The streets would eat you alive with an attitude like that.

This 17-year-old thug tried to pull the officer's gun from his holster as she was screaming "I'm going to kill you, you m*****f*****er!" and hitting him in his face, while the 15-year old was also assaulting him about the head. If it had been me being attacked, both of those hoodlums would be stone cold dead today, let me assure you.

What kind of animals are these criminals that they would escalate to this extreme for being told to "move along"? If they did this thing in a public high school, what kind of unrestrained violence have they been perpetrating in their own 'hood?

Keep these offenders off my streets -permanently!

Amen...ain't that the truth! Those of us who were in high school in the 70s can surely relate to that! To be honest, I would have been more scared of what my parents would have done to me than a cop or the principal! I'm not going to say I was an angel, but thank goodness I was a good girl when it came to any kind of remotely serious trouble.

On the news the other night they said that the 17 year old is being tried as an adult...way to go! Why the hell they released the 15 year old is beyond me...I hope they charge her with something! My parents would have kicked my ass from here to kingdom come if I even thought of disrespecting a person in an authoritative position. I'm forever grateful that I was raised with good values!

Clearly all of you have no idea of what goes on at James Island High School. I bet if you grab any 25 children from the hallways of the school and ask them if they had been harassed by the 'innocent' school cop who was 'maliciously brutalized' by these two 'hoodlums', at least 16 of them would say yes. I've been harassed on plenty occasions by Officer Micheal Heyward and so have my sisters, for simply bringing me lunch before a basketball game.

Officer Heyward constantly abuses his power over the students and nothing is done about it. The adminstration see it has him doing his job or they just don't believe the stories. He went into the cafeteria to speak to a student, and then he grabs the boy, slams him on the table and floor before trying to cuff him. I know this because I saw it with my own eyes.

And I can't believe you all believe everything you read, but this is Charleston. What else can you expect. Media is always distorted and you never get the full story unless you witnessed it yourself. The news makes it seem as if the students were loitering in the hallways WAY after school was dismissed and causing a ruckus. It is portrayed that the two girls just randomly attacked this poor innocent school officer out of malice and decided to take his gun. Which is NOT true. They were in the hallways probably 20 minutes after school was out and they were on their way to an afterschool club meeting that started probably 5 to 10 minutes prior to the incident. Even though his post is outside, to see if any suspsicious characters enter the campus and to make sure the students waiting for a ride are safe, he decides to enter the building to question these five girls.

And all of you saying the two girls should have been shot, tased, pepper sprayed, etc. you are all extremely ignorant and I think you all should be shot, execution style for even thinking that way. Seriously!

i graduated from james island charter high school about four years ago and i will admit that some of the students there are not the brightest or the most motivated . but i will ALSO state that officer heyward has a reputation for using unnecessary force on students. there was one incident that i witnessed myself in 2006, when a friend of mine was returning a book to her locker. officer heyward told her to leave campus. she tried to explain what her purpose of returning to campus was and he snatched her backpack from her, tackled her to the ground and arrested her.

there was another incident that i, myself, was involved in during the 2005-2006 school year. my younger sister was a freshman there and i had returned to campus to pick her up about 10-15 minutes after school ended to avoided the DREADFUL ji traffic. as i proceeded to call out to my sister to get her attention, officer heyward jumped in my face and told me to leave campus or he would arrest me. i told him i was here to pick up my sister and that i would leave as soon as she got into the car. he put his hand on his club and told me i better get off HIS campus. he called me derogatory names under his breath and laughed with his fellow-resource officer buddies. Mind you all, that i'm a graduate with honors. i was known as one of the most academically advanced students in my class. i was atheletic and pretty much an all around successful student. but i AM black.

officer heyward continously harasses students. he abuses his authority and that is EXACTLY what happened in this case. the two girls were accompanied by other students and were about to attend an after school meeting. heyward followed them from outside, where they parked, through the school and upstairs to where the meeting was held. i'm not sure of the details after that but i have NO doubt that he hadn't come down from his POWER trip from the years proceeding. I empathize with the girls involved. I'm saddened by the fact that their sides of the story aren't being heard. but i'm SURE they will be in due time.

and besides the fact that this GROWN man was assaulted by two teenaged females, don't you think it's odd that one of the girls ended up in the hospital? what would provoke a adolescent female to just reach for an officer's gun? there are MANY MANY holes in this story and i just feel that no one is taking the time to talk to the children involved. as an officer at a school, i'm sure they are trained to deal with children. you DO NOT use excessive force on a child . you DO NOT harass STUDENTS . you DO NOT send a child to the hospital and fabricate a story because it makes YOU look bad, if you told the absolute truth.

we all know how dirty officers can really be. i just hope that officer heyward has calmed his ways, or else i would fear what he would do to any of the other students at james island.

I don't know these girls and I don't know Officer Heyward. I don't know what the officer said or how he said it, but nothing, I repeat nothing he could have said warranted the actions of these two teenagers. You don't attack a police officer, you don't threaten to kill a police officer. If there has been a problem with his attitude in the past, why hasn't it been reported to the principle, teachers, parents, the police dept? If it has already, then I'm sure there was an investigation and he is still there. Maybe he doesn't say "please and thank you" but he doesn't have to. The actions of these girls eliminates any credibility for a complaint they may or may not have had. Like it or not it's called respect for authority, and these girls have none.

Mommy2b (anonymous) says...

iceman1978 - since the first incident wasn't done to me directly i wasn't able to make any complaints in regards to that, but i definitely voiced my opinion about how he threatened me. since i was no longer a student, not much was done, if anything.

cypress_jones - you're not being realistic! there's so much more that goes into getting someone fired from their job. the types of students that are pigeonholed [primarily the black ones and the ones that aren't from rich families.] are the ones that are being harassed for the way they look. these students don't think that anyone would believe their side of the incident and most don't even report it. it is easier for administration to ignore complaints or reprimand the student than it is for them to fire a resource officer for excessive force, risk lawsuits, etc.

jeff61 - it's NOT BS. and no one's saying that these girls didn't do anything wrong because attacking a police officer is ABSOLUTELY wrong. "aggression" should not include plummeling two adolescent females into submission, causing enough harm for one to be transported to the hospital. there are restrictions in what a male officer can and cannot do to females in general. you don't know how he was handling any of the girls before they attacked him. i was just saying that he was trained to talk to the students and apprehend them in a non-threatening manner that shouldn't result in the bodily harm of anyone, including himself. it's not JUST race that is a factor, but appearance. many students are judged because of they way they choose to express themselves. they are targeted by administration and officers. james island is one of the most polarized schools i've EVER attended. the rich kids stay with the rich kids. the black kids with the black kids. and the poor kids with the poors kids. not only are the black students targeted so are the poor white students. the ones that wear camouflage to school and drive huge pick up trucks, they TOO are targeted by administration. in this case, the officer saw two black females after-school and automatically assumed that they were loitering or attempting to cause a ruckus, when in fact they were trying to become involved in after-school activities. he could have escorted them to their destination, if he was so concerned about where they were headed, but instead he chose harass them until they felt threatened.

jeff, do you have children ?
if so, how did you explain to your child how to act when approached by an officer who is harassing them and using threatening body language? if you don't...then how are you to judge what "aggressive" force should be used against children?

The truth, jeff61?
The truth is they are NOT pregnant; they have NEVER been in any type of altercation with ANY other students; they are NOT bullies; they do NOT live in public housing; they have NO criminal records; they are NOT hoodlums; and they ARE, in fact, very nice and well-rounded girls.

So please explain to me why the police officer had to be 'aggressive' with two teenage girls. Explain why the police officer clubbed the 15-year-old to the point she had to seek medical attention at a hospital and she wasn't the one who attacked him.

i agree that at no point should anyone attack anyone else, rather he/she is a cop or student, but i WILL say that once you've threatened someone you have LOST all control on how they will react.

i'm just going to take it as you guys NOT knowing the truth. you are basing ALL your opinions on what is being reported, which i can understand. so i won't go into how ABSURDLY wrong you all are. especially, jeff and cypress. if those WERE the actual FACTS of the incident and those were the ACTUAL HAPPENINGS, all of you would be right in labeling and bashing the girls. heck, i would probably agree. but since i KNOW first hand how prejudice and judgemental OFFICER HEYWARD can be, and has definitely been in the past, i'm just going to pose THIS question:

if you were known for harassing and barrading students as a resource officer of a local high school and you lose control and hospitalized a student, how would you report the incident?

Please tell me you have something that would show this officer of many years felt compelled to beat them down simply because they felt he was harassing them. Please tell me that you have something more. These two girls will be on trial in the near future that will affect their lives. Please tell me you haven't pinned their hopes on the fact that this cop simply lost it and decided to harass and beat these girls. Please tell me you have something more then that to offer: I do not see anywhere in this article that the 15 yr old needed medical attention: must be for the pending lawsuit I take it:. And ya you report it.. How? You contact the school board and the states attorney office and go the beloved ALCU that rolled in to town and report that this officer is violating your civil rights.

How many gangster killings and young people have lost their lives because some slug felt they were "disrespected":Don't think for a second any of us are not aware of what goes on in this world of being "disrespected" How many time has someone been killed or victimized in the name of being "disrespected:. If you know first hand what the "facts" are, then lay them out.. Your comments alone have nullified any thing you could presented " I was just saying that he was trained to talk to the students and apprehend them in a non-threatening manner that shouldn't result in the bodily harm of anyone" Ok so you proved mypoint, so tell me how did this officer provoke these two girls to attack the him and threaten to kill him:Please tell me.. The papers won't say. Please tell me what caused this situation to escalate if the above statement is not true: you seen to want people to believe you were there and witnessed this??? Convince me that this officer had no reason what so ever to take actions he did: Convince me that other witnesses,,, to include the school faculty are totally wrong as to what took place:.

Let me finish by adressing this comment from one of you "i didn't say he was crazy. and i didn't say he was unstable .i simply stated that he has a reputation for being overbearing".. do think maybe... on the outside chance because this guy was a bit of a hard ass,,, that maybe....just maybe...think for a second now.....that the headlines in the paper with in the past year did not read " Eight James Island Students invovled in Armed Robbery of Food Lion"

Nahhh ,,, probably not... what the hell was I thinking.....

Well I guess none of you nay sayers can come fore with anything creditable to back your claims...So I rest my case... I would really love to live in the fantasy world that some live in and believe that this Public servant of several years simply went off and kick the sh!t out of these two girls without provocation. I am not saying this is not possible...but every argument put forward,,, and you don't probably realize this...has shown that these girls are the one that lost it and attacked this Officers...I really hope I am proved wronged and I will be forced to eat my words....I will do willingly without protest. And... Yes I have discussed this situation with my two kids without clueing them into my remarks...and....hmmmm they seem have answered as to how they would respond in the same manner as to what I posted... geeee... It seems proper upbringing and common sense may actual have some effect on children today.....noooooo that is not true...it seems these 20 something mama's to be have the answers... see some you ya in future additions of the P&C........ you're one of the main ppl encouraging the fact that the officer should have shot the two girls, pistol-whipped them, etc. so how are you telling me, it's MY generation? YOU need to face the facts, jeff. i'm sorry that you think it's okay to beat up on children because you feel that their parents aren't as "excellent" as you. it's quite sad actually that you chose to stereotype and exude extreme prejudice against individuals that you ASSUME to be threats.

like i stated SEVERAL times in my prior posts, i'm not trying to justify them attacking him. i'm merely stating that all the facts were not taken into account when this article was reported. my age has nothing to do with my opinion. i just KNOW these girls and i KNOW officer heyward. you're definitely an outsider looking in. you're definitely someone who feeds into how "thuggish and gangsta" the youth is today, TRUST it has NOTHING to do with an officer like MICHAEL HEYWARD.

he could have handled the situation better and as an adult he should have kept control of the situation. so you're telling me that these girls just woke up one morning and decided to snatch a gun from an officer's holster? two female teenagers attacked an officer for NO apparent reason, except for the simple fact that JEFF61 is NOT their father? i don't think so. once the situation escaladed into something violent, the officer had no choice but to use aggression, but it shouldn't have gone THAT far.

just because the information that i KNOW to be true isn't reported on your local news channels, radio stations or your morning read doesn't mean it isn't creditable. i'm not trying to prove anything to you at this point because like most older, 50 something daddy's, you stick to what you know and rely on what's being reported to, after being rehearsed, approved and REapproved by school liason, school attorneys and administration. and you were taught to take the punches from authority, whether you were wronged or not. which is fine. i was taught how to be a lady and conduct myself as such, to respect authority and also to respect myself. so this "20 something mama to be" is going to do just fine raising my children. they are going to know the difference between right and wrong and how to conduct themselves in certain situations. undoubtedly, this is a very unfortunate incident and i hope you ARE proven completely wrong.

maybe officer heyward, your fellow old timer, should take more responsibility for HIS actions. i'm SURE you were taught that too.

I just wanted to say that some of these resource cops are really trash.
I attended West Ashley High. We had a resource officer, his name was Officer Dan Hiers. He was having sex with a lot of the female students. I know because he did so with one of my friends.
Anyway, as of now, he is on the US Marshall's 15 most wanted fugitives list and also on America's Most Wanted for killing his girlfriend. Shot her in the head. Still a fugitive.

I had to wait to some things calm down.

Most of the people who made comments on this article more than likely are over the age of 30 years old. I'm gonna need ya'll to come in with the time. I graduated from West Ashley High in 2002 and PLEASE LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT THESE SO CALLED "RESOURCE COPS" ARE NOT ALL PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE!!!!
Keep in mind that they are humans as well and they have a conscience and any punk with a GUN will abuse his authority from time to time. Don't think for one second that I condone any violence but there are always 2-sides to every story. When the s--- hit the fans A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE gonna be eating there words.
To the ppl who think that denying these girls there education by putting them out of school will protect your kids--NOTT

To the ppl screaming that they should be killed and locked up and they got what they deserved etc. --and you have children of your own --- you need to be VERY careful of what you say about ppl.

To end this whole thing get involve in your children life, at school, at home and PRAY that when they depart they will not stray!!
