Man taken into custody after 2 hours on rooftop

Negotiator
Gesticulating in agitation and at times pacing a narrow ledge five stories above ground, a man kept police and other emergency personnel on edge for more than two hours in downtown Charleston. The man walked away from the ledge at 10:58 a.m.
The Post and Courier
Officer Richard Kennedy, a member of the Charleston Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Unit, talks with a man threatening to jump from the roof of the parking garage near the Gaillard Auditorium on Monday.
Arms waving in agitation and at times pacing a narrow ledge five stories above ground, a distraught man kept police and other emergency workers on edge for more than two hours Monday in downtown Charleston.
Police received the first call about a man on the roof of the parking garage near the Gaillard Auditorium at 9:02 a.m. He dangled his front legs over the side, almost as though it were a park bench. The front steps to the garage were dozens of feet below him.
Hostage negotiators, paramedics, firefighters and emergency chaplains gathered around the perimeter but stayed mostly out of sight. A small group of negotiators ascended to the roof to try to talk to the shirtless, middle-age man with shoulder-length graying hair.
Several times, the man turned to speak with them. Once, he got up and walked parallel to the side of the building, his feet just inches away from thin air.
People stopped near the intersection of Anson and Calhoun streets to stare. Two men doing contracting work at an office building across the street remembered the man walking by them quickly on Calhoun Street earlier that morning toward Marion Square.
"The only thing that really looked out of place was the speed of his walk," said Harry Floyd, a 35-year-old St. Stephen resident. "You don't usually see somebody walking that fast."
Soon, Floyd and a co-worker, 52-year-old Wendell Cannon, would see the same man atop the building across the street.
"He was acting like he was up there fishing and everything," Floyd said.
"He was up there waving his hands," Cannon added.
At 10:58 a.m., the man got off the ledge but remained on the rooftop. Police took him into custody at 11:19 a.m.
Police Public Information Officer Charles Francis said the man's pastor arrived to help negotiators talk him down.
Police Chief Greg Mullen said authorities would take the man to get help.

Despite the "brilliant" comment above, it would appear to me that the Police did an excellent job in handling a delicate situation.

Or is that Frank O Hunt?
Is this the same Frank O Hunt you refer to at times? If so why?? This Frank O Hunt seems like an interesting guy.
Mr. Frank O. Hunt, Jr. grew up in Charleston, became interested in broadcasting while in high school, listened avidly to local radio stations.
While serving his country in the Air Force, Mr. Hunt attended the Arkansas School of Broadcasting, and became a reporter for the military known as "Hunt, Frank O."
After leaving the military in 1968, Mr. Hunt became the morning announcer at WNCG in Charleston, and later worked for WQSN, WEZL, AND WTMA, taking the news very seriously, even though music was the main focus of the stations
In 1974, WCIV Channel 4 hired Mr. Hunt as a photographer and reporter, which after a short time evolved into his position as morning anchor.
After uncovering crucial evidence as a reporter, Mr. Hunt sharpened his investigative skills by dedicating over four years to the Solicitor's office as chief investigator, but later returned to television reporting at Channel 4
Mr. Hunt has chosen to stay in the Charleston area and cover stories with his unique experience and fairness, even though other job opportunities presented themselves.

Desperate? Are you kidding me? He had no intention of killing himself, just like the idiot on the bridge who waited for people to gather around. All this loser wanted to do was prove he could be in control of a situation, so he created one. To help himself feel alive and in control, he staged this event to make his point. You want to pray for someone, pray for those who are truely in a state of depression, pray for those returning from war who are having a tough time adjusting to life without road-side bombs and snipers.

I have to agree with Johnq2,
It is ironic that the same people that claim to be Christian are some of the ones that are the least compassionate. They seem more concerned about converting you to their side than actually helping someone out. I would hate to be a person that had a mental disorder in this State. I definitely feel that is the State's right to take care of people that can not take care or themselves. I am not saying that the person on the bridge or this person may have just wanted attention. But I was not there, so I can not assume that this is the case.

Once again the experts on the comments board chime in to tell us the jumper would not have jumped. There should be two possible outcomes for potential jumpers. One, they jump and we are sad. Two, they get talked down and we taunt them mercilessly about their attention-seeking stunt.
My question is why are these slacker idiot cops not aware that these latest two guys would not have jumped? The experts here have no doubt! Where's the police training? Heads need to roll here, cops wasting my taxpayer dollars on these guys WE KNEW would never jump. A good cop would simply recognize the situation and say "go ahead, make my day!" Then drive away laughing and get back to work.
But seriously, the lack of empathy shown here shows how much our society has deteriorated. Weak. François de la Rochefoucauld said: "We all have sufficient strength to endure the misfortunes of others." That "strength" is not the one this great country was built on.

Okay, so it is a sad story when someone gets to the point of contemplating suicide. But, I tend to find the details that make me snicker.
"He dangled his front legs over the side, almost as though it were a park bench." When did humans get front legs??? I thought that we had arms and we had legs. Does this mean that this person had two sets of legs?????

You are right, mindbath. We didn't build this country on the strength of empathy, we built it on pure will-power to survive (not roll over and die). We built it to have the chance for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Our law enforcement officers have much worse things to worry about than some idiot on a roof top going,"Look at me! I'm a loser!"
As for the police not just riding off into the sunset and ignoring this man, you know good and well that any family this loser has would sue the police into the ground. They have a set protocal they have to follow, regardless of what this loser would do. If anyone had the slightest idea about suicide, you'd know this idiot was just out for attention.

Wow. Early is Frank's son?!?!?! Would explain alot. I could definitely see a familial tie. lololol
Whether or not that 'urban Post & Courier legend' is true, I rather enjoyed both Frank's and Early's posts. Especially when they felt froggy enough to try to 'spar' with those who are actually politically moderate and have some semblance of intelligence. The rapport immediately degrades into cyber yelling and name calling. It's hilarious.
I also found it particularly interesting that only after he was 'outed' did Frank start denouncing the very same anonymity he hid behind.
Personally I find using my name freeing. No one can accuse me of hiding when I have something to say especially on this board. However, I realize that I can't fault others for not feeling the same as I do.
I also find it peculiar how many who espouse conservative ideals on this site tend not to show much empathy towards their fellow man. I guess for these people conservatism is no longer attached to the ideal of compassion. I'm not talking about having sympathy/empathy those individuals who fail in life and choose to live off of the public dole as opposed to working towards success. I'm talking about how some so early this morning have already assumed that the subject of this particular article should have died or somehow faked his desire to die.
I would find it tiring to be so jaded and emotionally empty every single day of my life. I don't need to list the posters, they know who they are and they say the same thing over and over again.
If anything I should have sympathy for them. *sigh*

bigsarge: I have to agree with you on one issue. The police HAVE set precedent in responding to such calls.
Personally I believe it is the right thing to do. However, even psychiatrists (MDs) or psychologists will tell you that nothing is the mental health field are sacrosanct. What I mean is regardless of what may be the tell-tale markers of someone truly bent on suicide, it is better to err on the side of caution when dealing with people like this guy.
Tax dollars aside, simply saying that the police should not have responded or that the guy should just jump to save us $ or that he should have been pushed is not only legally egregious but morally bankrupt as well.

No, BigSarge, I don't know that "this idiot" was just out for attention. I don't know anything about him at all. I do know that he acted like someone who may commit suicide. You seem to suggest that any time the rescuers succeed then the jumper was not serious.
And this country was not just built so all us tough guys could survive on "pure will-power." We also want our old, sick, and weak grandmother to survive. And our crazy uncle. Even if we are not around to help them ourselves. We are not just some self-reliant guys sitting around beating our chests. If we were we would not need a country. We send soldiers to war to fight for us. Here at home it is up to us to fight for those weaker than us. And to stand up for them.
When it comes time to fight for freedom, some of must man up and do so. When it comes time to help someone in need, like this guy, some of us must man up and do so. That's what his rescuers did. It's the truly weak who sit around and moan about these civic duties.

He could have been on drugs, probably a psychedelic (LSD, Psilocybin Mushrooms..) or it could have been a psychotic episode (caused by a mental disorder), which is very similar to "tripping balls". They even use the same type of drugs to treat a person that has a "bad trip", as they do to a person that has a psychotic episode: diazepam, seroquel, haloperidol::).

Suicide has huge collateral impacts. Children and families of suicides often have lifelong mental health problems and sometimes committ suicide themselves. Public suicide stimulates other individuals with problems to consider killing themselves. In schools, suicide clusters can appear where a number of students decide to kill themselves. It can be a real disease. In a culture that is often lonely and alienated, people are very vulnerable. The social and economic costs can be very high.
Talking someone off a roof in not only moral, but in the best interests of our entire community.
If you don't think suicide is a problem, at least consider that the most common form of suicide for men in American may be the automobile. If your comfortable sharing the road with people who are trying to kill themselves, then perhaps attempting to contain self destructive impulses within the population doesn't appear to be necessary to you. I however, would be concerned about what happens immediately after their car hits a tree if I am on the road at the same time.

Yea, RTC, she said that they do it for free. It's like a whitening guard. They'll make a mold of your mouth. You'd have to buy the whitening from time to time - which is like 20 bucks I think; but she said if you get the mold done at a regular dentist office, they charge up to 400 dollars (200 for the top and 200 for the bottom)- because it takes a while to do, and that time the dentist are using could be used for other patients.

As far as the story goes, I'm glad this guy is ok. Though, if he was 'fishing' on top of a building, it makes me wonder if he was on something.
