Questions linger in surfer's death

Craig Massey frequently surfed at the Folly Beach Washout, as shown in this 2005 photo. The 19-year-old died after he was stabbed July 2.

19-year-old charged with murder, assault says his home was invaded, published 07/04/08
On a warm July day, a crowd of surfers paddled through the waves at the Folly Beach Washout with an empty board in tow.
They came to say goodbye to one of their own.
Craig Massey had been a regular at Folly — a friendly, outgoing guy who seemed to get along with everyone. Then, in a freak flash of violence, he was gone, stabbed to death in a bloody confrontation that left two others wounded at a James Island home.
The crowd watched as Massey's brother and a cousin paddled past the breakers and set his board free to drift out to sea. They said goodbye, but their questions linger: Just what happened that night? And how could things have ended so badly?
"Everyone was completely shocked by what happened," Nancy Hussey, director of the Eastern Surfing Association, said. "Craig was so friendly and well-mannered. He was a very sweet guy."
Charleston County sheriff's deputies have released few details about their investigation. But they are probing the possibility that the July 2 confrontation was somehow linked to a romantic triangle involving the 20-year-old surfer, a young woman who also was stabbed and the young man accused of wielding the knife.
Massey's friends said he had an on-again, off-again relationship with Mary Whilden Hills, 19, of Johns Island. She also had a romantic relationship of some sort with the suspect, 19-year-old Charles Richard Dobson Jr., according to his attorney. Hills could not be reached for comment last week.
Dobson maintains that he acted in self-defense after Massey and other uninvited guests invaded his Teal Marsh Road home. Dobson's representation is expected to mount a defense rooted in the "Castle Doctrine," which outlines a person's right to use deadly force to defend themselves from violent intruders to their home.
"We don't know why they came to the home," Lauren Williams, Dobson's lawyer, said. "But it looks like they came in very aggressively from the minute the door was opened."
Investigators say Dobson lashed out at his unexpected guests, stabbing Massey several times, including two wounds to the chest. Massey died a short time later at an area hospital. Dobson also is accused of stabbing 21-year-old Travis Macon Barrow multiple times and wounding Hills during the incident.
Dobson faces a murder charge and two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill.
Charleston County sheriff's Lt. Eric Watson said investigators stand by their decision to charge Dobson and are ready to proceed with the case.
Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said the sheriff's office took the appropriate action.
Authorities now are reviewing the evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine exactly what happened during the chaotic episode and whether the Castle Doctrine and claims of self-defense apply.
Prosecutors hope to reach a decision about the case prior to a preliminary hearing on Sept. 2 to determine probable cause, Wilson said.
Massey's friends don't buy Dobson's story. They don't think Massey was the aggressor that night or that deadly force was warranted. They described him as an easy-going guy.
"I don't believe it," Daniel Blackwell, Massey's cousin, said. "He was always smiling and chilling."
Robbie Mullen, a close friend of the victim, said Massey didn't even know Dobson. Massey apparently went to the suspect's home that night to simply retrieve something he had left in Hills' car, he said.
The week before he died, Massey was arrested by Mount Pleasant police after he and Hills got in an argument on the Long Point Road exit ramp off Interstate 526. Hills told police that Massey, whom she described as her boyfriend, threw beer on her while she was driving after she refused to let him spend the night at her grandmother's house. Massey appeared very intoxicated and repeatedly cursed at Hills, police said. He was charged with disorderly conduct and underage possession of beer. Overall, however, he had a fairly clean record.
Dobson's criminal record contains minor drug and alcohol violations and convictions. He comes from a well-to-do family with roots in Virginia. His father founded C. Richard Dobson Builders, which was one of Charleston's top-five volume builders prior to its purchase by Texas-based D.R. Horton for $22.9 million in 1998. His mother, who is divorced from the builder, bought the Teal Marsh Drive home last year for $500,000 and owns another home on Folly Beach valued at $1.4 million, according to county records.
The mother, Anne Dobson, posted $12,500 to bail her son out of jail on July 16, and the family received permission to send Charles Dobson to Virginia to live with his sister while awaiting trial. He is barred from contacting the victims or their families and must wear an electronic monitoring device when he is in South Carolina, the court order states.
Some of Massey's friends wonder how a murder suspect could be allowed to leave the state and whether Dobson was given special treatment. But Dobson's attorney said the move was to guarantee her client's safety.
Vandals egged the family's James Island home after the stabbing and slashed the tires of a Ford Explorer parked at the property.
Neighbors said that the Dobsons moved out of the home weeks ago.
"There have been safety issues at the home since the incident," Williams said. "I don't want my client to be in a situation where he is in danger. He is badly scarred by this, as well."

Based on what I’ve read about this tragedy from this article and the previous one I can now say that Dobson’s story regarding the events isn’t plausible. Let’s start with what we know:
-There had been an ongoing dispute between Dobson, Massey and Hills who were involved in a love triangle.
-Dobson had an arrest record involving drug charges which probably meant that he has used drugs in the past. I would be very interested in knowing if they did a tox screen after they arrested him.
-The stabbing took place in his front yard. He stabbed Massey to death and wounded Hills and Barrow.
-Although he claims they entered his house uninvited, his actions tell us a different story. Had they entered the house and a confrontation ensued, the victims would have been found inside the house rather than the yard. Also, had they went outside and he decided to follow them to confront them he would have had an opportunity to let them outside and simply lock the door and then proceed to call the police.
My instinct tells me that based on these facts I believe Dobson left his house and went into the front yard with a weapon ready and expecting a confrontation. If you’re in your home and three people show up, one of whom you’re in conflict with, you don’t go outside to confront them. You keep your door locked and threaten to call the police unless they leave. You don’t know if they’re armed and you don’t know what they’re intentions are. What you do know is that your door has locks and the house has a phone to call for help. If you feel you’re really in danger then you have a weapon ready to protect yourself if worst comes to worst, but you use conflict resolution in that you try to get them to leave without incident. Any sane person would have done this. If they had stormed into his home then all bets are off and he’d probably have been justified. This wasn’t the case since the victims were stabbed in his front yard.

Want to know how I know he had the weapon before leaving? I can guarantee you that they exchanged words in the front yard and push came to shove before he pulled out a knife and started stabbing them. If he didn’t have the knife in his possession upon leaving the home he would have had to have gone back inside which meant they may have followed him. Also, the fact that this seemed to have been a fit of violent rage tells me that he had the weapon ready. If he had left it inside and had to walk back in to get it, it may have given him time to think about the ramifications of what he was about to do.
Although he claims self-defense, his story doesn’t add up. I don’t believe he is absolved of his responsibility in this matter. Had he pulled the knife and held it in front of him, asked them to leave, and said he would use force if they came any closer and this may have been different. He stabbed three people however, and one of them is dead. Massey was just a kid and had his whole life ahead of him.
Now perhaps I’m biased in this from the beginning since I’m also a surfer and will give Massey the benefit of the doubt, but he doesn’t look like a psycho to me. Massey doesn’t come across to me as someone who would become violent. Dobson on the other hand, considering that he’s apparently been living quite well off mum and dads money, comes across to me as someone who has never had to take responsibility for his actions or had to sustain himself.

"I can guarantee you that they exchanged words..."
How can you use words like "I can guarantee you" when you are just guessing about what happened? Massey was arrested a week earlier, drunk and having thrown beer on the same girl and was then described by the police as cursing her. Doesnt' sound like an angel to me.
I have no idea what happened at that house that night but I doubt you do either.

I agree with iceman1978's comments. HOPEFULLY, Charleston County would have certainly done toxicology tests. Dobson was out on bond at the time of the stabbing for a drug charge and I think his actions show that he's not very angelic. If we gathered together all the young guys who've gotten drunk and cursed their girlfriends and put them in the "doesn't sound like an angel" category, then Lord help us. We're surrounded by a generation full of demons.

LocalHero, When I use the words "I can guarantee you" it means that I'm so certain of my position that I would bet money on it. The guy pulled a knife didn't he? And didn't he stab all three which resulted in the death of one of them?
If I wasn't a logical person I suppose my guess would be that they were hvaing a nice chat about their favorite sports team before these events unfolded.

I've always found it suspicious that he stabbed 3 people. That makes it sound more like a drugged out psycho on a rampage than self defense.I of course wasn't there so I don't know.I just find the situation a little off and not logical.

coolfreaknbeans, My point exactly. If I knew whether or not a tox screen was done and what they found I could make a much better guess as to what happened.

Sounds like a 'tiff' over a girl went terribly wrong.Massey was dating the girl at the time I believe. If he went to Dobson's home to retrieve something from his girlfriends car then wouldn't that mean the girl was at Dobson's home?
Just think about it,have you ever been a jealous rage over a "sweetheart"Most of us would say yes and I'm speaking of days loooong ago. What I am wondering is why the PnC found it neccesary to go into detail about Dobson's family"s wealth.Just because he was a spoiled little rich boy does't give him the right to take another person's life.IF that were an average family that kid would have NEVER been allowed to leave the state! You can't even leave the state when you are on probation for minor charges.SO PnC tellus about the others involved(not enough money to mention uh?) That just shows you what a screwed up sysyem there is.I am sorry that a young man so full of life is gone forever, another ones life may be ruined forever, and here we have the center of it all-a girl who was probally was loving all the attention from both young men going from one to another-I say she is as guilty as the suspect!I just have one other question, wasn't this boy's piture (Dobson)in the news recently for some other incident? I'm just wondering.

I'm sure Miss Hills has alot more answers. Her testimony will probably be the deciding factor in Mr. Dobson's fate.
Hopefully she will be truthful and disclose all of the facts surrounding this incident.

Iceman,
You are WAY off in your facts of the night in question. Your "instincts" are similarly off target, as well. FACT: All three victims were stabbed INSIDE the residence. FACT: Mr. Dobson called 911 from his cell phone from inside the home which has been released to both the authorities and the attorneys. FACT: The 911 recording has Dobson calling for help from intruders who were allegedly assaulting him and his friends. FACT: Three men invaded the Teal Marsh residence that evening. I do not know if Ms. Hill was an invited guest. The three men were uninvited and entered the property illegally. FACT: Craig Massey was found by EMS and police in a ditch on Teal Marsh Road where he apparently had stumbled after leaving the residence. His friends drove one of the other alleged victims to the hospital but failed to either see Mr. Massey in the ditch or presumed he had passed.
As for toxicology, Mr. Dobson's report won't be nearly as important as Mr. Massey's.
As for Mr. Massey's arrest in Mt. Pleasant, the information shared with the reporter is not the entire story. Mr. Massey allegedly physically assaulted Ms. Hill in a raged-filled tirade that included other actions than what were described in this story.
All of these issues will be decided by a trier of fact and a jury. This story is a tragic one. A young man, in the prime of his life, died a horrible death. The most crucial element of this entire case is the fact that Mr. Massey entered the home of someone he did not know, without invitation, and violence ensued.
None, NONE, of the issues that I have laid out as "facts" can be contradicted by any of the parties. However, there are two sides, and both stories will be revealed in court. As a neighbor on Teal Marsh I hurt for all involved, including the NEW residents of 1624 Teal Marsh who have suffered vandalism that was directed towards the Dobsons. Additionally, Mrs. Dobson has been threatened, harassed, and verbally assaulted by a carload of young women. This incident was reported to the police but not included in this story.
Don't kid yourselves, this case is eerily similar to two other cases that have transpired in Charleston County in the past two years. Those cases involved parties of a different socio-economic background. This case involves white kids from upper middle-class families, occurred in a nice neighborhood on James Island, and sadly cost us the life of a young man who was apparently well-liked in the surfing community. If the identical fact pattern had occurred in North Charleston, the East Side, or Hollywood, the Post and Courier wouldn't be paying this much attention to it. It may also be why Scarlett Wilson hasn't either dropped or reduced the charges against Mr. Dobson.

southerngirl, I think the reason the reporter wrote about Dobson's family was exactly the reason you're saying: "If that were an average family that kid would have NEVER been allowed to leave the state! You can't even leave the state when you are on probation for minor charges." Great point! And, I'm sure that's why it was reported.

Murder maybe, manslaughter definately. Heat of passion most likely. This doesn't sound premeditated. Just a bunch of idiots with too much testostorone and a deadly result. Its sounds like the lawyer is going to defend with the 'castle doctrine' (even though he was outside the residence, carried the knife outside the residence and confronted or was confronted outside the residence and could have retreated) and really seek the lesser charge of manslaughter. The solicitor will go for the higher charge cause she's "big, bad and a law and order kinda gal." This is plea bargining material. Good strategy on the lawyer's part.

As a friend of both parties involved in this incident, I think this is one of the most tragic incidences I have heard of in a long time. Both families are left to pick up the pieces and try to go on with their lives. They do not need people to gossip and speculate who have no clue what really happened that night. If/when the police reports become public, you will learn that the victim and two of his friends went to the Dobson's home because the girl had gone there first. The door was locked and the victim and his friends beat on the door until the girl unlocked the door and let them in. Two of the boys attacked Dobson while the third boy acted as a lookout to make sure no one in the house got out. The boys fingerprints are all over the front door and were even numbered by police. While the boys were knocking on the door, Dobson called police. Police did not arrive until the incident had already happened. They have the 911 tape to support that fact. Massey did not die in the house. He ran from the house after being stabbed and died by the road where his friends left him. This is tragic for all but imagine that you are sitting at home minding your business and this comes to you. Very tragic for everyone but before you cast stones, remember, this could be you or one of your family members accused of this one day. Be open minded until you are privvy to all of the facts. My heart and prayers go out to all of the parties involved. This was a tragedy for both of these boys and their families. Neither of them deserved this much tragedy at such an early age. Pray for both of these families. Don't gossip about them.

theballsiam-YOU seem very angry at what people have posted about this article-were you there? WHERE HE WAS STABBED IS NOT THE ISSUE.THE POINT IS A YOUNG LIFE HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER SOME LITTLE THING TRYING TO PLAY A GAME BETWEEN TWO BOYS!!!ANOTHER POINT IS DOBSON WAS HOME, MASSEY WAS IN HIS SPACE FOR WHATEVER REASON,AND THE FACT THAT DOBSON'S FAMILY HAS A LITTLE MONEY HE IS ALREADY BEING SHOWN FAVORTISIAM SO I DOUBT JUSTICE WILL EVER BE SERVED FOR THIS VICTIM.ALL AROUND IT IS A VERY SAD STORY.DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE STORY ABOUT THE YOUNG LADY WHO WAS RUN DOWN IN SUMMERVILLE A FEW YEARS AGO BECAUSE SHE WAS AT THE MOVIES WITH A BOY WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SOMEONE ELSES BOYFRIEND.THE GIRL GUNNED HER MOTOR AND RUN THE YOUNG LADY DOWN AND KILLED HER.NOTHING IS WORTH A LIFE NO MATTER IT HAPPENS!

Southerngirl45, you must not be too bright. Turn off all caps first if you want me to read what you have to say. Secondly, I was just pointing out to the idiots who say Massey was stabbed outside that they are wrong, when Massey was stabbed INSIDE the house. Nothing more, genius.

This does go to show you that nothing good will ever come from a love triangle. Do any of you remember the incident at Charleston Southern where one of the baseball players was attacked and then kicked in the head, and then died? That was a while back but that was two guys fighting over a girl. Same story here it seems.
This may sound harsh but in love triangles that go nasty I usually don't feel sorry for the person in the center of it. If they had any sense they would end it completely before things come to this but they're often so self-centered that they enjoy the attention too much to see where these things can often lead to.
---
And if I'm wrong on the facts, and Dobson was in his home, and called 911, and the other three invaded his home, then he has a case that it was self-defense. I'm sure I included that in my previous statement.

Ok,, some may of had "facts" which do not agree with your facts. Other wise what is the point in making a statemet if no one is reading it? Yes I remember that incident with the teen girl and the car.. I hope she is stil in jail. Just this past Friday I had a "Distant Cousin" who stabbed and killed his wife over an affair she was having. No he will be spending most if not all of his life in jail and rightly so.

One seemingly obvious fact that I can't find in this story is the "who" part - who was inside the Dobson home besides Dobson at the time this incident happened? Dobson and the girl only? And Massey and two male friends arrived?
If the version of events presented by SKS is correct then there is a clear case for self-defense if Massey and his friends were physical once they got inside. What is harder to determine is what happened once inside the home - who got violent first, etc.
The jury will decide fairly, hopefully.

To all you malicious gossips. Here is some first hand info. Three boys and one girl were sitting in the Dobson's home when Craig Massey and two others burst in. Craig was not wearing a shirt and immediately started attacking everyone inside. Cabinet doors were ripped off the hinges and the downstairs apartment was trashed by the intruders. Dobson made a frantic 911 call pleading for help. Dobson performed first aid on the girl until the ambulance arrived. Massey was left to die by his friends in a ditch. The attack was violent and premeditated, the crime scene was a bloody mess. Dobson spent 2 weeks in jail without bond, which is outrageous under the circumstances, this is clearly self defense. Charles Dobson is the eldest son and was protecting his home, brother and friend.

If the "insider information" on this board is true and the police have 911 calls from Dobson stating these guys were knocking on the door and invading his house, why would he be charged in this case? Wouldn't that show the solictor this was in fact a home invasion? I think there is a lot of gossip going around. the suspect was home with 2 others when 3 entered his house looking to harm him and his family. the victims were clearly drunk and on drugs. the fact is that they came in his home with violent intent. i have spoke with the people that were present at the time. ask yourselves this question: If three people came into your house whom you did not know with intent in causing harm to the ones you love and refused to leave what would you have done? i would have defended myself. what would you have done? probally the same thing that dobson did. it was not like this was the first time mr.Massey broke into someones house. there are 2 seperate occasions that he had done so and assulted them as well. and he also has assulted the girl on many occasions. it looks like he was on a binge of some sort and thought he was invincible. it is a trajedy on all ends. yall need to stop spreading rumors because most of them are far from the truth.

there was no love triangle or previous dispute for the record
