Sertoma Classic canceled because of rain

Friday, August 22, 2008

Tonight’s high school football games in the Muhler Sertoma Classic have been canceled because of the weather. The games will not be rescheduled.

Sertoma Club officials said the field at Johnson Hagood Stadium could not handle another night of games. Thursday's games were played despite torrential rain associated with tropical story Fay.

There will be no ticket refunds, Sertoma spokesman John Panagiotou said. The proceeds from the event go to various charities and the high schools involved. Ticket stubs from Thursday night’s games and unused tickets from Friday will be honored at The Citadel’s season-opener against Webber International next weekend.

“Unfortunately, due to the amount and duration of rain, tonight’s Sertoma Classic has been cancelled,” Panagiotou told The Post and Courier. “The Citadel has been wonderful to work with and they tried to do everything possible to make the games take place tonight, but the field would not be able to take another seven games under these conditions. We appreciate and thank the Citadel for its great support and help of the Sertoma Classic.”

Also rained out is Hanahan’s regular-season opener against Columbia. The game has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at Hanahan.

What a crock!! People paid $15/person to see thier sons play (not The Citadel). Then be told thanks for the donation? Is the Citadel going to donate any of the concessions from next weekends game to the "charity"? After all that is what is all going to.

And it wasn't 7 games it was 7 quarters which is less than two games. But feel free to use my donation to buy some grass seed.

Grrr!!!! Man, I was looking forward to this!! I had my daughter run around last night getting my tickets, and now I've wasted my money!!! If I had wanted to donate 40 bucks to a charity, I would have picked it myself. If they didn't want their field messed up, I guess they shouldn't have hosted. I want my money back.

This is a rip off. They should have had a rain date for the next night. Using the stub for another unrelated event instead of a refund is not right.

To not schedule a rain date is totally unfair not only to the athletes, but also unfair to their families, friends, classmates, peers, and the die-hard football fans in the community.

Given the current economic situation, $15 per ticket is tough for some families to afford, and to not give reimbursements is just plain wrong.

I could see if there was lightning or a safety concern but, to cancel it in the interest of the field is BULL****.

The seniors don't get a opportunity to participate in one of the biggest nights of their final season. Not to mention playing football in the rain which is one of the funnest things in sports.

I suggest every one upset with the no-refund decision to contact the Muhler Sertoma Club officials at this link:

http://www.charlestonsertoma.org/contact...

Although I did not already have a ticket for tonight's game, I have sent my email to them. The more emails they receive, the better.

Thanks for the link. Wonder if we will get a response.

Mooncalf your right. I was going to see the underage cheerleaders(my daughter) and while there I wanted to see my son play a little football.

But sorry to say my wife has passed and but was going in spirit.

As for the $15 it is closer to $100 when you figure brothers and sisters. With only one income i am a little cheap and will not appolagize for it. I didn't donate to SERTOMA i bought a ticket to see some football. I could give a hoot what they do with the money.

Thanks for proving there are more horses a**es than horses.

mooncalf...justafan just made you act a fool.

I think 15 dollars is a lot, and not to mention that this is a huge event for high school's and they don't have a make-up day. Maybe they could've moved it to West Ashley high school again. If they are so concerned about their field.

mooncalf,

Your parents need to kick your ass out the house :p

I too purchased 4 tickets and I am a single parent. My daughter won't get to see the game at all. Yes it is hard times for all. I've already contacted Sertoma, but there is no number listed for them at all. I think they should let the ticket buyers decide if they want a refund or if they want to just let them keep it.
To top that off, why would I want to go to a Citadel game, no offense, but the police chief has made it pretty unbearable to enjoy the pre game festivities and parking is a bear..
I will NEVER buy or support them again if their decision is not "revised". Let the people decide what they want to do.

I thought I heard on Wednesday that plans for rainy weather were being discussed. What happened? It wasn't like we haven't known since Monday that the storm was heading our way! I understand why the Citadel doesn't want their field messed up tonight, especially with all of the flooding in downtown at 2:00 this afternoon, but why weren't there any contingency plans for a make up on Saturday, Sunday, or even Monday nights? This is lame! I heard they had record advance ticket sales because this is the first time in a long time that school is in session and the cheerleaders worked very hard selling tickets. There is absolutely no excuse for not having a plan for poor weather. It is hurricane season, you know. Duh?

Would you like some cheese with all this whine??????

Seriously though, the money goes to some great causes, and if it was really such a financial burden you should have just snuck in the gates. It's not that hard.
