Police score a pot bust for the ages
Nearly 500-pound cache had street value of $2.2M
By Schuyler Kropf
Provided by the North Charleston Police
Nearly 500 pounds of marijuana and several guns were seized by police after they received a tip from federal authorities.
North Charleston police have announced their biggest marijuana bust in memory — a nearly 500-pound haul — nabbed after a fleeing minivan refused to stop.
Suspects in the case, including the driver of the wrecked van, are still being pursued. But officials say the catch equates to nearly $2.2 million in pot being diverted from Lowcountry streets.
In drug math, that's about 220,000 "dime" bags at $10 each. The pot reportedly traveled to North Charleston from Arizona.
Capt. Patrick Nathan of North Charleston's Special Operations Bureau said the bust is the largest in his two-decade career with the department. Marijuana sales throughout the tri-county area are significantly hurt as a result, he said during a press conference Thursday.
The case sprung late Wednesday when police, acting on a tip from federal authorities, set up surveillance of a nondescript office building in an industrial park near the Charleston
International Airport. Soon they followed a man driving a blue van with New York plates.
Around 11 p.m. police attempted to stop the van, but it took off on Interstate 26 east near Montague Avenue, authorities said.
The driver continued down the freeway and exited at Cosgrove Avenue, heading over the Ashley River and into West Ashley.
The vehicle wrecked shortly afterward, hitting a tree or other object near the Charlestowne Methodist Church, across from the Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, according to authorities.
The driver fled and the van turned out to be a rental. An estimated 150 pounds of pot, taped in compressed bricks, was recovered inside.
Back at the office building, nearly 340 more pounds of pot were found, police said. During Thursday's press conference, police showed photographs of the haul but said that the odor of the seized marijuana was too overpowering to bring into the room.
Authorities also recovered at least five guns from the bust, including an SKS assault rifle. Nathan said it was clear that the owners of the pot believed they needed that amount of firepower for protection.
The business site where the surveillance started is on Airpark Road. Attempts to reach its representatives were unsuccessful.

That's probably at least $2.2M less in munchies sales, too!

2.2million!!!! yea right the cops really need to update their street prices for drugs just like they still do cocaine as 100 a gram what are they in the 80's on the news they said 480lbs so 16oz a lb 100 an oz = 768,000 1/3 of their "Street value" now if they had focused on the real problem and got all the mexicans that brought it over deported we would be ok

The NCPD is so incompetent they allowed the suspect(s) to get away. I don't think they can exactly brag about it. This guy will just be pushing more weed now that he wasn't caught. That weed in the picture is probably sold for around 1,000-1,500 bucks a lb (aka, it's sh*t weed), so really that's 500,000-750,000 dollars of weed, no anything near a million. Typical cops playing and lying about the real numbers. If they honestly think most of that weed was going to be sold in dimebags they're retards. While 500 lbs is a nice bust, it's nowhere near how much weed is in Charleston right now.

That's crazy insane.
Marijuana grows out of the ground, it is no where near as dangerous as crack, heroine, cocaine, meth. Go after these dopeheads that are baking this crap up in their family's homes, forcing others to inhale God knows what kind of fumes.
I always read about marijuana busts. Never have I read about a 250#+ bust of cocaine, heroine, or meth.
I also don't know of many drug dealers that have shot and killed anyone over a dime bag of pot. Isn't that usually reserved for the crackheads? You know, the big time money drugs, not dirt weed from New York.

This marijuana should be divided into small bags, $20 to $100 sizes, and sold to adults at various places throughout the area. The money could then be used to fund North Charleston's budget. Good post willbill. Marijuana was around 30 years ago and it is still here and it will be here 30 years from now. I don't smoke it but I inhale the smell of liberty for myself and others and pour water on the flames and putridness of government tyranny. Legalize marijuana.

Beer-created by man. Crack-created by man. Heroine-created by man. Meth-created by man. Marijuana-created by God.
---------
We would be better off if marijuana were legalized and subject to taxes and State regulations in the same way that we regulate the sale of hard liquor. The drug war is costing billions of dollars, it's not working, and it places non-violent offenders behind bars while violent offenders get released on parole to go right back to their old ways. I'm glad that the NCPD are doing their job, and glad they're ok, but I believe police resources should be used for more important matters.
I wouldn't legalize the hard stuff, but I would decriminalize it to some extent. If it's a first offense, put them in rehab and help them as best as you can. If you have someone so heavily addicted to crack or meth they can barely function, why bother with expensive rehab? Just put them in a sanitorium so they're not a danger to society by being out on the street and supply them with drugs. That's what the Chinese did when they had a problem with opium addicts.

Lab mice do not share the same mental dynamics as a human being. I'm not sure they have much memory to begin with.

? Stewart, I don't think I'm a hypocrite. I'm not denying that I haven't broken the law. There have been times when I don't wear my seatbelt and such, but that's mostly unconscious and at least I'm not putting others at risk besides myself. I didn't drink till I was 21, and honestly, I don't know of any other laws that I have broken. But maybe you can think of some that are going under my radar. I guess my point of view is that people who consciously break the law when they obviously know that pot is illegal is kind of ridiculous. Especially when they're carrying around guns.

I totally agree with iceman's comments, legalize marijuana, and decriminalize the hard stuff.
Another point, we as a society should focus on moderation and not prohibition. Prohibiting just makes many people want to try it that much more. Excess, whether it is alcohol, food, pot, are all bad. But in moderation, we are finding that many of these things are even good if not beneficial.

CB, I'm not a pot smoker. I'm not trying to use God to justify pot use either. Obviously no one is getting my point. People use God to justify all kinds of things. Babies being shaken to death (It was God's will), blah blah blah. My point is the bible can be used to debate with anything/justify anything. People pick and choose what parts of the bible they want to believe and what excerpts to use when trying to debate articles. It's useless. There are portions that can debate both pro and con of just about everything under the moon.
Do I think marijuana should be legalized, yes. Why? There are far worse things than something that has grown out of the ground. Let's say, murder and prostitution (Cue Stephaniem). Let's also say crack, heroine, meth, LSD, baby shaking, alcohol abuse, I could go on forever.

Maybe we could use that money for say, I dont know, health care, education, etc... But no, many law makers unfortunately go through life with blinders on. "It's a drug, lock people up for having it, spend money on seizing the shipments, prosecute, prosecute, prosecute". How long does this have to go on for people to realize it's a harmless plant and until it's legal nothing will change. We'll just keep shoving people into our overcrowded jails and shipping them back out onto the street worse than they were when they went in.....OPEN YOUR EYES.

stewart, We send very mixed messages to our kids when it comes to drug policy. On one hand we tell them that marijuana will destroy them and to stay away from it. We tell them that to consume alcohol before 21 is a no-no. Yet we throw every pill we can think of to deal with any kind of problem.
If they have trouble sitting still? Ritalin. We don't even bother to question that maybe they're gifted and are bored with the material. We don't look into the fact that their restlessness could be caused by the foods they eat, the lack of physical exercise, or the small time they spend with family. No. Throwing drugs is easier.
Depressed? We have a whole host of pills for this.
I often wonder if some of the child prodigies of the past like Mozart or Beethoven would be put on ritalin if they lived today. I tend to be hyper sometimes, but I release it by working out, surfing and, when I was younger, playing rugby. I've never taken ritalin and never would.

usna04, Right now. Summers are beautiful there. Summer in Bergen stays in the 70's but can sometimes reach the low 80's.
In the winter it usually doesn't get below freezing, but it's chilly and rains a lot. Most people think of Norway and they think freezing cold, but it's only in some sections. Oslo is more to the interior and is closer to Russia to winters there are cold and it snows. The northern sections as you get closer to the arctic cirlce are very cold and get below freezing most of the winter. Bergen, Alesund and Stavanger face the North Sea so they're exposed to the currents of the Gulf Stream. They tend to have milder winters.
Summers in general are very nice throughout the whole country. In some sections however, there will still be enough snow on the ground to go ski for Easter weekend.
I've surfed over there and you can get some good waves, but you have to put on a lot of gear to handle the cold water.

Iceman that was sort of my point, the drug lobby spends millions, now they advertise what ails you, we now have a cure. True, there are some that truly need the medication, but usually it is not something that hard work or little exercise could not cure.
Another point and I am heading to lunch, one of the biggest problems with pot is that smoking too much of it does make you lazy. Not good for a capitalist society (again I am not advocating socialism and lazy people disgust me as much as the rest). The best argument I have heard against its legalization (funny I have not heard it mention on this site yet) is that it would hurt our productivity as a nation but hell you can say the same things about blogging, fantasy football, etc. Again, the key with anything is moderation.

enough is enough with marijuana being illegal. alcohol and cigarettes are legal, although both have been shown to cause much harm to peoples' lives - both physically and mentally. marijuana is a natural plant, and like was already mentioned, needs no tampering to do what it does best.

iceman, you should definitely try working at a resort hotel in Norway. That would be a great experience. Not that Colorado is any Norway, but I worked at a resort dude ranch out there for a summer and had a blast. Going to beautiful places and making money - there's nothing else like it.

Less than half an acre. I live in a neighborhood where houses are close together .. but a decent size back yard. I just hate doing yard work in this heat .. well now that its cooling down, Im thinking of what I want to do w/ it. I love cutting grass though! lol

wow, Australia and New Zealand would be fantastic! What sort of mission is it? Some friends of mine just went to Belize on a mission trip, and the pictures they brought back were beautiful, not to mention tear jerking. The church that I play for just went to New Orleans, but I couldn't go because of work, which really bumbed me out out a bit. I'm sort of a weather geek and was a meteorology minor in school, so it would have been great to not only help out those folks down there but also study what went wrong with the levees. Oh well, maybe another day. I hope your church raises the money.

Yea ChasCarolinaGirl, I thought about that after I sent it! Ha...might want to wait till the big hundreds of mile huge storm passes first! You'd think I be used to it going to the College of Charleston the last 4 years, but no...
iceman, you better start convincing. :)
by the way, I'm trying to order a catalog from the Dale of Norway site, and it keeps saying Vennligst oppgi when I try to press the send button to give my mailing address. Any idea what that means?

I don't think 'dumb' is a word I would use to describe a one year old baby killing a 9 month old baby. That would, in a sense, imply that the baby knew what he/she was doing and was aware of the consequences but ignored them. I choose to use the words incredibly sad and horrific."
Let me just clarify, I didn't mean it was dumb, I meant that story being told as what happened is dumb.

ColdBeer/others, if prohibition had not been repealed as it was back in 1933, then all the drinkers you know would be underperformers as well. In fact, drinkers would pretty much be the same crowd that smokes pot today: people willing to break the law to obtain, possess, and use a drug. Would you yourself drink if it were illegal?
Are you expecting a law-breaking demographic to live up to their potential?
Same with gun-toting thugs. Not really a problem with legal goods. There were plenty of gun-toting alcohol thugs during prohibition. You have to be able to seperate aspects of the issue that are fully a result of it's legal status. Lowlifes and thugs are a function of an illegal enterprise, not a function of a plant that grows in the dirt.
The easiest way, I guess, to see what I am saying is if it were 75 years since the legalization of pot, as it is for alcohol today; and if alcohol had been illegal since 1970, then everything you say about pot would apply to alcohol and vice versa.

There's a way we could solve the nations problem with drugs, gangs and prison overcrowding all at once. This is drastic but I believe it would work.
One: Legalize marijuana and decriminalize hard drugs. This is what I had said before. Place taxes on the sale of marijuana and regulate it the way that we do on hard liquor.
If you have someone addicted to hard drugs put them into rehabilitation rather than jail. Save the jail space for violent offenders. If their condition is so far gone and their system nearly destroyed from drug abuse then put them into a sanitorium. From there you either detox them and pump them with morphine to deal with the pain, or you keep supplying them with drugs. They key is to get them off the street.
Two: Cut a secret deal with a foreign power. Perhaps Turkey or China. Iran if we could trust them with it. When the time is right the media will find out about it.
Here's the deal: We pay a foreign country $10k per person, per year for each prisoner that they incarcerate for us. If it costs them less than that, they keep the rest. It may cost this country tens of thousands to house prisoners but I can assure you other countries who don't have a crime problem know how to do it for less.
Next we activate everyone in law enforcement, the military and national guard just in case. Call in reserves if you have to. Position personell outside major cities. Offer the gang members a deal. Come forward and surrender within 48 hours and we will help you readjust to society. You want the gang tattoos removed? You need job training? You need to complete your high school education? We're willing to help you. All you have to do is turn yourself in and sever all ties to the gang lifestyle.
After 48 hours the deal is off. When they're arrested you put them on a plane and send them overseas to be incarcerated. People who are in gangs are nothing more than a drain to our society and they've spent their entire lives tearing this country up and living off the largesse of the Federal govt. Enough is enough. We're going to send them to a place where they will be thankful once they get back.
Even if we sent 250,000 overseas at $10k per person that would be $2.5 billion per year. Clear out US jails and use the space for violent offenders not in organized gangs. Using a fleet of a dozen 747's you could have them out of the country in the space of two months.
How to pay for all this? Use the tax revenue from marijuana.

"Why not ask the border patrol and residents on the mexican border how harmless dope is?"
If it were legalized, the border patrol and border residents would have nothing to fear except coyotes. The Mexican mafia would have to find a new way to make a living.

It warms the cockles of my heart to find such wide spread support for the decriminalization of reefer. Back in the '60s when I started smoking it, I just knew it would be legal before a black man was president. Now I may well be relying on a black man to change the laws. Oh, the irony!!!

Yes the marijuana needs to be legalized as soon as possible.
We have to keep government in check and giving them rampant drug war power makes them desire the need to control everything we do. They think it is their mission to babysit us. We are sick of it and then they take most of our income via taxation to do it. Keep government small and legalizing marijuana is a good start to do it.

The P&C stated that the rifle in the picture is a SKS a usual they are WRONG. The rifle in the piture is a SKS. The SKS uses a standard 10rd fixed magazine. The AK-47 (in piture) uses detachable magazine (30rd standard). Both fire the 7.62X39 cal.rd. The 7.62X39 is as powerful as the 30-30 lever action deer rifle made by Winchester,Narlin and others. The anti-gun media will state that the AK or SKS round are "COP KILLER" or Armor-Piercing bullets again WRONG. Most of the FMJ rounds that the AK and SKS shoot are lead core bullets much like the soft pointed ammo that the deer rifles shoot. They too will defeat a bullet proof vest and car bodies with ease. The other firearms in the picture are as followed. a TEC-9C 9mm SEMI-AUTO pistol,A Ruger pistol cal. unknown,A Glock Pistol Cal. Unknown and a S&W 5rd .38 cal.Snubnose revolver.

You could also blame Charleston City for them getting away. My understanding is that North Charleston asked for help from Charleston City during the pursuit and they refused.
