Prudential, a national real estate company, has awarded a $1,000 Prudential Cares Volunteer Grant to real estate agent J.J. Messervy for his commitment to community service. Messervy gave the grant to the charity of his choice, the Francis R. Willis SPCA in Dorchester County. Messervy currently serves as president of the Willis SPCA Board of Directors.

"I am truly touched that Prudential would give me this award, but the most important aspect is the money going to the shelter as we're always in desperate need of more funds to care for the county's homeless pets," Messervy said.

The money will be used as matching funds the SPCA shelter needs for an expansion it hopes to complete.

Messervy was a Prudential Realtor when the award was applied for, but since that time the local Prudential office has gone independent as Carolina One Real Estate.

The highlights of Messervy's commitment to the SPCA include raising more than $30,000 annually through organizing the society's annual oyster roast, and serving as the volunteer executive director for nine months last year.

To donate to the SPCA, call 871-3820 or stop by the shelter at 136 Four Paws Lane in Summerville.
