Newspapers, TV left in bind by affair story
Newspaper editors and TV producers say they tried to track down the story of John Edwards' affair for months, even though it was sitting right there in the supermarket check-out line the whole time.
The National Enquirer first reported last December that Edwards, then a serious presidential candidate, was having an affair with a campaign staffer. While the tabloid reported on it extensively, there was nothing in the pages of national newspapers, no mention on network newscasts until earlier this month.
Conservative commentators have questioned whether there were political
considerations in the mainstream media's decidedly slow reaction to the Edwards scandal, but media experts say the only bias here is against the Enquirer.
"The mainstream media found themselves in a bind when the Enquirer first reported the story," said Sid Bedingfield, the former head of CNN's U.S. Network, who is now a professor at the University of South Carolina. "Major news organizations were not going to go with the story without confirmation, and they didn't know how to get it."

Although the Enquirer over the years has broken more mainstream stories — certain aspects of the O.J. Simpson case, the President Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal — most journalists don't trust the paper. The Enquirer has been known to pay its sources and report an entire story based on the word of a single anonymous source.
Not to mention the fact that, until a few years ago, the Enquirer's sister paper routinely reported such stories as Newt Gingrich's secret meeting with space aliens and Hillary Clinton's love child with an extraterrestrial.

Edwards finally at the top of a list — the cad list
Read what columnist Brian Hicks has to say about Edwards' affair.
In the last week, newspaper editors around the country have written about their attempts to get the story. The New York Times says it had several reporters check out the allegations, and John Drescher, executive editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, sent reporters to New York and California on the trail of the Edwards allegations.
Bedingfield said that some of the things that the Enquirer was willing to do — follow Edwards to hotels, wait for him in parking lots — were most likely distasteful to many of the larger papers. He said there is no doubt that there was a debate about what to do about the story in newsrooms across the country.
Part of the problem, media experts say, is that the game is changing. With more sources for news now — blogs and talk radio in particular — there is more competition for news, and not all the players play by the same rules.
"Newspapers have higher standards of reporting than other outlets," said Chris Lamb, a professor of communications at the College of Charleston.
That doesn't mean they didn't want the story. Lamb notes that most reporters will go to great lengths to break a major story, but they can't do the things a tabloid or Internet site will by posting anything its operators hear. Professional journalists need proof, not somebody willing to tell a story for a few bucks.
Bedingfield said the Enquirer breaking the story probably made it even harder to confirm; the tabloid's reporting made the Edwards camp close ranks and be more careful. Lacking documentation or proof, there was little to be done. For instance, when Sen. Larry Craig was caught up in a sex scandal in the restroom of a Minnesota airport, there was an arrest report, something for journalists to report on.
With Edwards, there was little until the birth certificate without a father named on it turned up.
Ultimately, Bedingfield said, it's a difficult decision for newspaper and network officials to make; and with 20 years at CNN, he's had to make a number of them.
He said that, without independent proof, he probably would not have run it.

What makes the author of this story think that John Edwards was ever "a serious presidential candidate?" Edwards is (and always has been) a joke and should be treated as such. Watch your editorializing in news articles Mr. Hicks...

Yeah its amazing to watch the medias love affair with OBAMA and EDWARDS. OBAMAS answer on abortion during the meeting with Rev Warren should be getting plenty of scrutiny but it isn't except by fair and balanced FOX.
If the Enquirer knew about this affair then why didn't the main stream reporters? They did they just chose to ignore it and not report fairly, objectively. OBAMA has got a free pass and it's time he got called on his continual flip flopping and flat out lies. Heres one for you, he said his hardest decision was voting against the war, HE WASN'T IN THE SENATE WHEN THE WAR STARTED! The media has let that one go!

Foxnews on cable and foxnews.com on the internet was running this story for 2 weeks before Edwards admitted the affair. Foxnews kept asking when the main stream media would get on board. It was right out there but was ignored by the big networks and by CNN, MSNBC, AP, etc.

Because when you have folks running for these political offices and will have major responsibilties if they win , (no matter what office) they should have some morals, ethics and a sense of respect and with this guy he has shown to have none of the above, thats why most care who's pudding he is poking around with.

Just the ultra liberal media taking care of their own. Had this been McCain, Huckabee, or O'Reilly, every green liberal in Hollywood, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and NBC would have interreupted prime-time programming to announce the story.
The ultra liberals at Air America would have stroked-out trying to air the news.
No, there exists no bias with the news networks...NOT

I've wondered why anyone who has a 'history' would even consider running for office, and then, why so stupid in this media age to just go ahead and create a 'history' in the midst of showing/telling how perfect they are and how wonderful and perfect their families are, etc. One has to wonder where their umm brains are.
These people know they are going to be put under a microscope. What? They believe their own hype and think they are the be-all end-all; ergo, they will be protected by all other citizens and media because they are so wonderful?

This seems like a bit of back peddling. I will give the benefit of a doubt in this one instance, but it seems that selective news reporting has become the norm and not the exception. Have we experienced the death of journalism reporting the news, and experienced the rise of journalist attempting to shape the news. Be an active consumer of the news (and news outlets you choose) and don't just take what they thrust on you. Unfortunately, too often we seek to read like minds when we should be seeking to read those whose views are in opposition to ours. As the old adage goes, the truth lives in the middle thereof.

B.S.!! The so called mainstream media is in a decades long love affair with anything or anyone who is liberal, socialist, communist, marxist or progressive! Think Russia, Castro, Chavez and others that liberals idolize! If this had been a conservative, a republican or a religeous person they would have reported it, unsubstantiated, because the seriousness of the charge was more important than the truth! Dan Rather proved that!

Two points: 1) Neither party can take the moral high-ground when it comes to extra-marital affairs. McCain had an adulterous affair with his now wife before his divorce to Carol. One could make the the argument that the right is more hypocritical in their approach in that some of their offenders are crusaders for morality publicly (a la Robert Livingston and Larry Craig).
2) When it comes to a huge story like the Edwards affair, you would have to believe that a media outlet withholding such a story has to love their favored party more than their job and company. By not reporting this story, they are choosing to protect the party over the significant prestige and publicity of breaking a story (and the consequent financial gains that come with it). This may be the case, but it should be considered.

Yes, he is an idiot if he thinks we will buy into that. They had no trouble confirming Nixon's role in Watergate or WMD. (Actually, they work their butts off nailing Nixon.)
Problem is if the affair had been made public sooner, Hillary would have most probably be nominated and media darling Obama would be looking for a VP slot.
So the major media people sat on it, just like they are sitting on the story about Obama's citizenship.

I hate to say it, but I cannot imagine Nixon attracting more than one woman in his lifetime. And it may have led her to drink. He had to be one of the most hard up men in politics. Maybe the whole USA. Also, one of the most superficial.
One thing that might help this country attract better leaders is a poll tax. You vote, you get the money back. The other is the elimination of the secret ballot. People should be able to stand up and be accounted for.
Does anyone know where the secret ballot idea originated?

I have friends who are 180 degrees from me politically on many issues(we all love each other anyway :) ) & the common theme when we discuss politics is that both parties have betrayed their ideals & seem to be composed of an inordinate # of hypocrites.

It's been more than 30 years since Fred Biebel served as the Republican Party's deputy national chairman under President Ronald Reagan, and three years since he retired from his last job as director of the governor's Bridgeport office.
But the 82-year-old former GOP power broker, who was a guest of President George W. Bush at last year's White House Christmas party and has been rubbing elbows with the political elite — or helping them get elected — for five decades, still has strong opinions about government and politics.
"Obama can't be elected. I believe John McCain survived those years as a POW in Vietnam to take a special place in our nation's history," Biebel said bluntly. "I believe he will be elected president and is just what the country needs." History, Biebel feels, will also treat the current President Bush — whose poll ratings are at historic lows — "far more kindly than people believe today.
That theme had even greater resonance for Biebel weeks before his book was to be published, when he unexpectedly received a call in April from a young archaeologist in Virginia. The caller, James Curry, had somehow ended up with part of his great, great grandfather's tombstone, which was unearthed from a church cemetery in Charleston, S.C.
'It's such an amazing story how this young man came to have the tombstone and find me just weeks before the book was to be published that we decided to add a brief chapter to the end of the book about it," Biebel said. The tombstone bears the name of Robert Hatch, the great, great grandfather who was killed in 1814 during the War of 1812.

Such a waste of pretty face but hanging in your noone's face
I wish that you would take a look and really stop that
Top that, stop that
I don't really give a about tryin to top that

"Fairness in the news media is a thing of the past. When CNN first started, it was liberal, but not over the top. When Fox first started, it was conservative, but not over the top. Now both act like they are trying to our influence each other and they get worse with each passing day. MSNBC and NBC sold out a long long time ago. They aren't even rational anymore."
I totally agree with you ColdBeer,
Most of the time the News is nothing more than sensationalized crap, whether it is CNN, Fox, MSNBC, or whatever. I love this country, but News, Culture and media now cater the lowest common denominator. I make a comment earlier that I liked the Daily Show. While it not real news, it is great political satire and really hits the mark, and they do make fun of both Republican and Democrats. Other than that, I usually listen to NPR (I already know what some of you think about NPR, but that is beside the point). My point being is that media, popular culture, and television focuses on sensory overload and capturing people’s limited attention span than actually providing viable information with any substance.

Hey,
Why come can Dead_Pirate talk mess about the "Dude" but no one else can? If that was anyone else saying he was delusional arch would have blown a gasket by now. He got mad when people only made references about him in other posts (references that weren't this derogatory) but now he overlooks Dead_Pirate. I wonder is being away from the board has mellowed the "Dude".
And politicians still suck!

There is only one person that has repeatedly shown and proven to have multiple personalities and screen names here. There has only been one person that has a proven track record with delusional behavior and has gone as far to involve a supposed friend's name in a deranged scheme. How many more deathbed I am got now testimonials must we endure? Some have used multiple screen names but I don't think they ever denied who the really are. Again all I have to say to this sad episode is It's like passing an accident on the highway - I don't WANT to look, but sometimes I look, and then I feel nauseous and hate myself for exposing myself to that.

I can imagine this conflict in ones head
You wake up at Seatac, SFO, LAX. You wake up at O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, BWI. Pacific, mountain, central. Lose an hour, gain an hour. This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time. You wake up at Air Harbor International. If you wake up at a different time, in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?
Hey, you created me. I didn't create some loser alter-ego to make myself feel better. Take some responsibility!
Fight Club was the beginning, now it's moved out of the basement, it's called Project Mayhem.
We have front row seats for this theater of mass destruction. The demolition committee of Project Mayhem wrapped the foundation columns of a dozen buildings with blasting gelatin. In two minutes, primary charges will blow base charges and a few square blocks will be reduced to smoldering rubble. Arch know this... because Dread knows this.

This is some serious crazy going on here.
Like the train wreck quote...yeh, ditto & ditto.
I think sanity gets fascinated by insanity...& perhaps the train wreck & inability not to look is the result of our continuing to hope that we really are not seeing what our brain is telling us we see.
We keep hoping & trying to make a bunch of disjointed pieces fit.
Of course they do not fit because they are not part of the same puzzle.
Something here went terribly wrong at the puzzle factory.

Interesting comments:
UrGatorbait:
Edwards is a real scuzbag ... C_J you add nothing to this forum but tension. Learn to have a conversation/discussion without name calling.
<beside the obvious on name-calling (the only name-calling CJ did was to call Edwards a douche), this from Gator comes after arch calls CJ out after a post not related to arch, minutes after CJ's first post of the day.>
Johnq2:
Don't leave Arch Dude and Mindbath we want to hear more about politics from you!!
<appears to link MindBath with arch (??????) - still waiting to hear what JQ meant or misread>
arch_dude:
If you look closely I bet you will find that Jonesy/Gadsden/Cypress_Jones/MooMoo/MindBath/TP if not more may very well be the same individual.
<but WAIT... arch links me with all his enemies!!!! (note, arch, this post is my FIRST EVER use of "douche" on this forum)>
I refuse to pile on here, but a few other points. The only thing to do here is STOP. When this goes on, the normal anonymous discussion on the news can't go on. It has been cyber CSI and delusional concerns and threats since last week. CJ it was wrong to keep pushing arch. arch it was wrong to keep digging your grave deeper in an effort to live up to something you once said. Something about in it to win it, never quit (in sports, etc.) Ego can take you down. We don't need IPs, we WANT anonymous (= uninhibited). So what if someone has multiple userids? So what if they use these userids to gang up on you in an argument (look up Argumentum Ad Populem - it is a common logical fallacy to think you are right because the larger group agrees with you - making the multiple userids tactic pointless). And getting a new id when banned is not insane.

When darkness turns to light,
It ends tonight
It ends tonight.
A falling star
Least I fall alone.
I can't explain what you can't explain.
You're finding things that you didn't know
I look at you with such disdain
The walls start breathing
My mind's unweaving
Maybe it's best you leave me alone.
A weight is lifted
On this evening
I give the final blow.
When darkness turns to light
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight.
Just a little insight won't make this right
It's too late to fight
It ends tonight,
It ends tonight.

It's like passing an accident on the highway - I don't WANT to look, but sometimes I look, and then I feel nauseous and hate myself for exposing myself to that.
