I-26 project will see more lane closures, traffic shifts

The Post and Courier
Sunday, August 17, 2008

More nighttime lane closures and traffic shifts will come during the second week of widening Interstate 26 to eight lanes between Ashley Phosphate Road and the Mark Clark Expressway.

In addition, motorists along Remount Road can expect some lane closures during the day and stops near the freeway as heavy construction equipment is used to lay piping and prepare the area for pilings for the new Remount Road overpass.

"One will see the scope of work expanding considerably as the project gets into full gear," said Earl Capps of the U.S. Group, principal contractor for the three-year, $66 million project.

Motorists will see lane closures most nights on Interstate 26 in both directions throughout next week, said James Law, media and customer relations director for District 6 of the S.C. Department of Transportation.

Daytime lane closures on the interstate are not permitted during construction.

Some of the work scheduled for last week will be shifted to this week because of the rainy weather that stopped work for two days.

Workers will be expanding the shoulders at night to shift traffic lanes once work begins on the interior lanes, Law said.

Restriping of lanes will occur after the shoulder work is completed.

The shoulder expansion will expand from between Ashley Phosphate Road and Midland Park Road overpass to between Aviation Avenue and I-526 in the eastbound lanes starting Tuesday, weather permitting, Law said.

The Skytran system will make future lane closures and traffic shifts obsolete. We really need the Skytran system here in our area. Go to Skytran.com for further info.

I think I'm the only one that's actually been slowing down in the 45mph zone. If the city wants revenue then set about thirty cops out there. Double fines for speeders in construction zones.

Damm,, there is old SKYTRAN. I was being to think we lost our friend SKYTRAN. Glad to see it is alive and well.

Ok but seriously, I went to the site and all it shows is a photo of this train. Not much information about it. It looks as if it rides above a "rail" system????
