Wanted: More North Charleston police officers

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, August 13, 2008

North Charleston Police Department's latest "Wanted" poster is not for hardened criminals. It's for more cops on the beat.

The agency has 24 police officer openings to fill over the next nine months and plans to advertise inside and outside the state to recruit new members with a unique weapon — a 15 percent hiring bonus for certified officers with at least one year of experience.

"It's always been a challenge getting our positions filled." Police Chief Jon Zumalt said. "We think this hiring bonus will help meet our needs."

I hope you fill the slots. Police are never paid enough and I'm sure these positions don't either.

Unfortunately, being a police officer is sometimes a thankless job. I commend those who are LEO's because I know I couldn't do it.

How about paying 15% bonus to fill the empty Firefighter slots.

Until your F***G house burns down, or you need to get cut out of your car, or you need someone to do CPR on your wife at 4 oclock in the morning because EMS is really busy and ETA is 10 extra minutes, or until...

ahhh what the hell, I am beating my head against a wall with you all.

We need ALL of our emergency personnel, and I think we can agree that they have dangerous jobs, they are underpaid and often under-appreciated, but they do their jobs to make a difference in their communities. Thanks to all of you for the jobs you do.
