Movie draws local criticism

Protesters hold signs criticizing the film 'Tropic Thunder' on Monday in Los Angeles. Charleston-area groups representing the mentally challenged also are upset.

A comedy-action movie opening in theaters today has outraged groups representing those with mental disabilities for what they call the gratuitous use of the word "retard."

"Tropic Thunder" follows a group of prima donna actors filming a Vietnam War "Platoon"-like movie that gets tangled up in real warfare with a paramilitary gang.

The satire spoofs the film industry about the lengths actors will go through to advance their careers. It stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr.

Officials with Special Olympics of South Carolina and local relatives of people with Down syndrome say the "R" word is just as demeaning as the "N" word and should not be perpetuated as OK by the Hollywood film industry.

In one scene, Stiller and Downey are talking about Stiller's role as a developmentally disabled character in a fictional movie-within-the-movie called "Simple Jack" with the slogan "Once upon a time ... There was a retard." The phrase has been yanked from promotional material.

"There were times when I was doing Jack when I actually felt retarded. Like really retarded," Stiller's character tells Downey.

The conversation continues with words such as "moron" and "imbecile" before Downey says, "Everybody knows you never do a full retard" in an acting role.

Special Olympics officials are appalled.

"Every day I see athletes make great achievements. I see them on the field and in society contributing. For this to happen, it's a slap in our faces," said Sue Maner, Special Olympics of S.C. vice president of programs and communications.

Special Olympics and 15 national disability groups have spearheaded a campaign demanding the most obnoxious references be pulled and that filmmakers apologize.

After a meeting last week with disabilities groups, Chip Sullivan, head of publicity for DreamWorks Pictures SKG, said the company regretted offending anyone with disabilities and in no way meant to disparage or harm individuals with disabilities.

Local parents and relatives of people with disabilities aren't happy.

"It is as inappropriate to use the "R" word as it is to use the "N" word," said Todd Nimmich, whose son, Paul, has Down syndrome and was featured in a Coke commercial this week during the Olympics in Beijing.

"It's demeaning and degrading to a group of people who don't deserve it," Nimmich said. "They didn't ask to be the way they are. They were born that way. "

ReBecca Kutcher of Mount Pleasant is the mother of Trista, who has Down syndrome and works at a theater ticket window.

"It's taking a group of people and putting them in a negative connotation," she said.

Paula Byers of James Island, whose brother, Eddie, has Down syndrome and works part-time bagging groceries, objected to the movie's use of "retard" as well.

"It's a hurtful word, and it's a painful word for parents and relatives," she said. "If Stiller thinks it's cool, then a bunch of high school kids will think that's cool."

Byers hopes the movie will make people stop and think about what they say.

"Underneath we are more alike than different."

I was about to say the same thing. There are movies that I have found highly offensive. That's why I don't go to see them. If someone asks, I tell them why I'm not going to see it. I have a job though, and when I'm not working there are too many other things I'd rather be doing than going to a protest.

Posted by nursenat on August 13, 2008 at 1:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

So, because the word offends some people, the movie company is supposed to take it completely out of the film?!
It's a word, people.

Posted by WhoCares on August 13, 2008 at 7:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ditto, ditto, ditto! Perhaps they should just go back and delete all uses of the "r" word and the "n" word and replace it with "Obama" ... same difference, eh??

Posted by Tammie on August 13, 2008 at 7:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I have to go with the masses on this one...if it's that freakin offensive, DON'T GO SEE IT!! There are a few movies that I find offensive (not very many) so I just to the LOGICAL thing and not watch them!!!

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 8:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree- get off of the soap box. It's a movie. It's not real. If you find it offensive, don't go to see it, don't rent it. The movie is not directed toward any one person in particular. It's "art".

I guess since gas prices are high these re oops sorry people have nothing better to do. And think this is fun. People go to a beach,, read a book visit your friends. but protesting a MOVIE? People get a life.

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 9:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't know about some of you, but I am intellegent enough to make my own decisions on what movies I want to watch without someone dictating to me or telling me that since a small group of people find it offensive, I no longer have a choice as to whether or not I go to see a certain movie. There are plenty of things that I find offensive, but I make my own choice to see or listen, or just ignore it.

If one of my children were mentally challenged- I would focus all of my attention on that child, and not waste my energy and time protesting some stupid movie. I would think that I would develop thicker skin.

Posted by commonsence on August 13, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I bet most of this board would be offended if the "r word" were redneck instead...

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 9:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Um- I am not a redneck. And there is only one word that truly offends me but I wouldn't protest a movie for using it.

The wheels on the bus goes round and round!!!!!!!!!!!!he is not stupid or an idiot, he is just brain challenged, he is not a fatass, he is just big mac and large fry challenged, he is not a politician, he is just a person that loves to screw without kissing challenged, its not his fault he is not here legal he is just illegally challenged, he is leg challenged or he would be a porn star. And you can see by the picture above even retarded people can carry signs, here's your sign........

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 9:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Arch-
I would be more concerned about nurturing my child and providing the best I could for that child. I would spend my time and energy enveloping that child in my love and letting that child know how much he or she means to me. I would teach that child that he or she is wonderful, no matter what anyone else may think. I would certainly protect him or her from any unkind comments made by ignorant people that may be directed directly toward my child. But I'm sure, faced with the challenge of raising a "special" child, I would not have the time to waste protesting a stupid movie.

Posted by Just_Me_2 on August 13, 2008 at 10:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It's pretty obvious that most of the posters on here (those that are making fun of the article, and using the "R" word themselves) must not have a child or family member with special needs, that they love and care about. Maybe if that were the case, you might understand how it feels for people to use that word so loosely.

ColdBeer,
Most of the free-loaders are not liberal, and are usually just apathetic and not political at all. I know that allot you guys believe that if you one thing that is considered liberal (like the environment), you have to also believe in government handouts, but this is not always the case.

Posted by grannyofseven_2 on August 13, 2008 at 10:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Sorry arch, dear but I do have 2 that are mentally challenged, one is my age. The other 12. So sorry Guilt wont work here I would be upset if they came in the face of my family member, but this is a movie. like I said no one gets upset if a women is called a BI**H in a move or a man is called a F*g or if a rape seen is too graphic only because it is a movie if you don’t want the person to be upset don’t go to the MOVIE.

Lucy has this one pegged! Everyone is a "victim" of something. Hell, lets protest the gay movement, the fat movement, the thin movement, global warming, retards, smartasses, tall folks, short folks....the list goes on and on. We will all be so busy protesting that absolutely nothing getS done. America has become the land of the offended. If you are put off by something that some group or individual is doing, avoid those folks and GET A LIFE! JMO

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 10:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Arch- If someone were to fling deragatory comments toward my child, or even to someone I don't even know that was near me, i would be very much "in your face". I have no problem speaking my mind. I just have a problem with protesters of any kind who try to dictate what movies, books, or songs can be released. Thats the only point I am trying to make.

Tripsa- don't let them run you off! Or are you going to play with your leggos again? And are you calling me a dunce?? Tripsa! I'm crushed!

In some sense arch I agree with you, but protesting isnt going to work. We still have those horrid gangster rap music, we still have the flag, I can go on and on. But all it is doing wasting time. I also agree with you on Stiller.

Tripsa- sorry you had to learn the truth about Batman. But no matter what anyone says, Santa Claus is real. And so is Spiderman, I think.

Posted by jennirick on August 13, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I must say, I find the word to be offensive as well. The word, carries a lot of negative meaning behind it. Kind of like that word that was used on the board a few days ago about that kid that was a w*gger. Archdude, I must agree with you. I don't know any mentally challenged people but I could see how that word would be hurtful. I always used to say "that's gay" until one of my gay friends pointed out how offensive that is. Not because of the word itself, but because of the meaning that is implied.

Posted by luckylady on August 13, 2008 at 10:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Sticks and stones!!! A movie is meant for entertainment and if it offends you don't go see it - that is the best way to protest it. We have become one sensitive nation - we seem to offend somebody all the time. Get real people. I don't call people names that will hurt them, unless provoked and then I have been known to let a few fly, but I would have no reason to call any type of handicapped person a nasty name like retard - chances are they would not understand it anyway. AND no, that wasn't a dig!!

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Poor Tripsa. Sorry you don't have any red ones to play with. And thanks for not calling me a dunce. That would have really hurt my feelings. And may I say I am impressed with your use of big words this morning! ;)

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 10:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

ColdBeer- That was bad!! Funny, but bad!

Posted by iceman1978 on August 13, 2008 at 10:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Has it occured to these people that their protest could only serve to make the film more popular?

Posted by Lovely_One on August 13, 2008 at 10:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Coldbeer: "Retard, retarded and retardation are all words. If you happen to be retarded, or have a loved one that is retarded, it's kind of silly to take out your frustration on the English language and those that use it. My use of the word "retard" did not make anyone retarded and is not making anyone's retardation any more severe."

Now that is so true! Me being short is not exacerbated by people calling me shorty, short stuff, half pint, etc. I think these people feel that their condition is being taken lightly because others use the word as a means to make fun of or degrade someone for their stupidity, shortcomings, mental incapacities, etc. I personally wouldn't protest, but I don't have a dog in this fight!

Posted by Lovely_One on August 13, 2008 at 11:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks, tripsa. I was also surprised that no one said anything about Downey's role. I think it is awesome that he is taking such a bold step and I want to see the movie because of it.

Posted by grannyofseven_2 on August 13, 2008 at 11:04 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Because someone disagrees with you, it doesn’t mean you are being out down. We try to have a friendly discussion here we may not agree what is said but most in here will try not to insult or name call anyone. And I did say most. Sometime I wonder if the people who make these movies don’t hire others to do this just so people will go see the movie. This wouldn’t be the first time this has been done. And I am not saying that the protesters are doing this I am just wondering. Sometimes media coverage is the best way to sell a movie even if it is negative media.

Define: Retarded;
-relatively slow in mental or emotional or physical development; "providing a secure and sometimes happy life for the retarded"
-mentally retarded: people collectively who are mentally retarded; "he started a school for the retarded"
*taken from PRINCETON.EDU.

It's just a word, people. And yes, I have family members who are mentally retarded. The word *retard* means slow, literally.

A simple MOVIE does NOT dictate how a child should emulate people. That is what PARENTING is for. Just because my child sees an anvil fall on the coyote's head and live, does not mean that in real life, someone wouldn't be hurt by that.

It is a PARENT's job to dictate to their children what is morally right and wrong, not a movie. My child can listen to Hannah Montana, but she will know that it is inappropriate to take half-naked pictures of herself. My child may listen to rap music one day, but she will know that it is inappropriate to smoke dope and shoot people. My child may watch a stupid movie calling people retards, but she will know that it is inappropriate to call someone with Downs Syndrome retarded.

*someone stated something about high school kids watching the movie and learning that it will be "cool" to call people retards because of the movie...
I'm pretty sure they call people retards anyway. High school kids are mean. They call people all kinds of things, offensive or not.

If my child were mentally retarded, one of my priorities in raising her would have been not to take offense to the word, retard, because it is just a word. Now if someone were hurling rocks at her, that would be hurtful, not a stupid word coming from uneducated mouths.

*stepping off my soapbox now*

Good Morning, Lovely! You expressed yourself very well for one who is horizontally challenged!

And I also want to see Robert Downey, Jr. in this movie because of his role.
It's a satire, people. It's meant to be out there. If you find it offensive, go watch something else.

Hey lucy, thanks, I feel so tall now! And I agree, don't watch it if it's a problem to you.

Marianne, I agree with you as well. Kids use the word all of the time and I have heard this word use in many movies but this is the first time I have heard of people protesting about it. And we as parents are responsible to teach our children what is and isn't appropriate to say and do.

I read arch, and I was mistaken about your "ladies" comment, I admit that. However, you made an assumption that all I could afford was tech and are still making assumptions about where I attend college and what I can afford. You are also assuming that I am still a receptionist and are over looking the fact that I have a husband who works and you have no idea how much either of us make. So you have no clue what I can and cannot afford. I will not have this debate with you today or any other day because, like I said, you will not stop until the other party says what you want them to say and if they don't, they are wrong. It's insanity at best!

Marianne, I actually have normal sized arms (lol), Arch called me T-Rex either last week or the week before and I told him I didnt have lil dangly arms like a T-Rex. Lol

I think that the protesting of this movie may actually help this movie out because everyone now wants to see what the big fuss is about. It just doesnt look funny enough for my tastes.

I don’t necessarily like archdude’s arrogance, yet he is one of the few on this site that uses reason in his arguments and you can definitely tell that he at least thinks for himself, something that so few people do now a days. While I don’t always agree with him, I at least respect his opinions. Now, we all know archdude is arrogant, Gadsden is an opinionated libertarian, and that you guys are always after each others throats, so let’s have a cease fire for at least a week. Really, it is making you both look childish, and rarely flatters any of you guys. Coming up with childish insults don't make you look intelligent, but just immature. This is just my advise, take it or leave it.

Gadsden, you are awful! And, no, I have no idea who Jenna Jamison is. (Ducking just in case the lightening starts to strike)!

Back to the story:
I wonder if they plan to protest against every movie that comes out and has the word in it. I guess I will have to wait and see.

Ooh, somebody's mad at Lovely for real. I didn't even say anything to his Eminence and he came back at me with a contraception hit. He must think that I am insulted and ashamed at the amount children that I have. But alas I am not. But that is what seems to be the thing that they toss back at me as if it a badge of dishonor. So, funny.

Oh for crying out loud. arch calm down if you hadn’t gotten on your high and mighty anyone would have come back to you in such a way. I personally don’t care if you were Donald Trump. Having a difference of opinion is what this is about.
Not if you make more money then Bill Gates. (Just an example I know this wasn’t mentioned.) Or if the rest of us are street people.

I thought we came here to post our opinions and maybe get off topic once in a while.

Gadsden, he will just say that it was satire and "not in bad form" and that I took him out of context. But alas, that is neither here nor there. I should not have responded to him, so I'll be the bigger person and accept the blame today. Although there was a post that we all ignored earlier that read:

"Then again, why would you normal nitwits get that?"

But, I guess that was not an insult.

I just took a peek here, and am truly sorry that Archdude has dominated this whole post. His ravings have had nothing whatsoever to do with this article. He has made this board his personal soapbox in order to read his written word. He has taken personal pot shots at just about every other poster on here.
And that is not called for. I hope you check your blood pressure, Archdude. I have the feeling it may be up. And your wife should be infuriated with the manner in which you drug her into this. That was very crude of you.

Um, I do believe before Lovely's comment came archdude's comment that addressed Lovely on a topic that had nothing to do with the story at hand. So, I do believe archdude is wrong and lucy is right!

Posted by lucy_fan on August 13, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Archdude- you started to veer off topic when you addressed your posts to Lovely, and that comment was regarding something you two got into yesterday. The way spoke to her in that post is what prompted all this back and forth nonsense between everyone else here and your raving comments.
That's fine if you believe I am in the wrong. I know I'm not always right. I don't try to be.

The reason I am doing as I am doing today is because I am damn tired of the BS bullying matches that go on in here every day. Many of these people need a separate discussion area/chat room so they can leave others, who want to actually discuss or debate (without name calling) to do so in a civilized manner without the mannered-impaired butting in. This is not a person's private web log (blog for those who don't know), it is an area for discussion (which has more than one side). Unfortunately, too many of these folks resort to the behavior of a 5 year old when someone disagrees with them (and they never give reasons to back up any statement...they just say it is MY opinion...and that is what this is for.) While that may be true, that they can express their opinions, they should have a little respect for the opinions of others and the factual arguments made by others."

Arch, honey, the RSA is here to stay. We have every right to post on here as you do. We just don't degrade others for the purpose of making our pathetic, shriveled self feel important. Like you do. Degradation of others is not a pretty personality trait, Archdude. If, in the future, you see our posts on here, and they don't match your high and mighty way of thinking, then just skim over them and address your posts to someone else who shares your pompous, arrogant view point.
And I agree with tripsa- you, sir, are not much of a man if you think talking down like that to anyone, especially a woman, is anything other than being a total jerkwad.

No one wants the movie to be banned, they want an offensive word that is cruel not to be used.
Why is that so hard to understand?
I'm sure that if you were called a name constantly, purposely, to demean and hurt you, you would want that abuse to end.
This is not a "liberal" thing, this is common decency.
Are all of you so deadened by hatred of anything that offends you (democrats) that you have no empathy for the less fortunate?
I was raised (in Charleston) to be respectful of others, not to call names, and to be polite. I was also told that only poor white trash behaved otherwise.

I know right...gee weeeeeeeeeeezzzzz

Hello everyone! I just want to let you all know I had a good time laughing at the majority of the post on here today. Some of you all may need to back up and power down the PC for a while before a membrane burst in your forehead.

Sticks and stones will break my bones but names would never hurt me. Pee Wee Herman said this a long time ago on his show and I tend to use it. I want to pass it down to a couple of you all too. HAHAHHAHA HMM HMM HMM (Pee-wee's laugh)

On another note I do agree with people on here that are saying the name calling is so uncalled for. You can't say "Let's have an intelligent conversation you half brained retarded monkey." and think people are going to listen to you.

Posted by Tammie on August 13, 2008 at 4:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ain't that the truth. Now maybe, "please, let's have an intelligent conversation you half brained retarded monkey. Thank you very much." would work better.

I wonder if the protesters will be in front of the theater when I go see the movie.

And yes, it looks like arch is serious and I really like Gadsden. I have nothing against arch either. We had our disagreement today (and yesterday) and tomorrow would have been another day. We would have either agreed or disagreed. That's the way it is.

If he cannot control his emotions any better than that then I think he should sit down and speak to someone about it instead of coming on a board and taking it out on people that he doesn't know and who don't know his situation.

Like I said yesterday, I was cordial with him and even though he was coming off as a pompous blow hard through out our exchange I still remained civil. He kept degrading me and my education and thought process all because I wouldn't say what he wanted me to say.

He should realize that a different opinion from his does not equate to a wrong opnion. That is what it boiled down to. And he exploded in here because we wouldn't stop posting like he told us to. What was that about? And there were many times he posted to us and we didn't even address him.

Again, I am sorry to hear about his mother and I will keep her in prayer, but he should not let things get him to the point that it got to him today.

What an angry but otherwise empty soul archdude must be, as displayed by his vitriol towards anyone who disagrees with him. He has my deepest sympathy.

Does anyone remember the movie Animal House and how funny it was? Imagine the uproar from the pompous politically correct crowd if a movie like that came out now...

MooMoo, you are right. How about all of those spoof type movies that the Wayan brothers have made. They have made fun of everyone in those movies, and they are hilarious.
Never heard of anyone protesting their flics.
Someone is always going to be offended by something, and if people continue to protest every little thing then what is going to happen to our freedoms in this country?

Posted by MooMoo on August 13, 2008 at 9:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

RTC, unfortunately, what is happening is no one can say anything anymore - even in jest - without somebody getting offended and questioning their right to say it. It's scary.

It is safe to say that most of the people that post on this site have some type of psychosis.
Actually, that reminds me, tripsa, I proud that you took a break from the site weeks ago. Really, I bet it did you some good.
Finally, no one can argue that archdude didn't make an arse of himself the last couple of days. He let yall get to him.
But, I guess if it is to hot, get out of the kitchen. Anyhoo it was an entertaining.

Elmer, it doesn't make any difference AT ALL whether arch was telling the truth about his "successes." The idea that that somehow wins an argument is psychotic. When you get on here and spill all your info and boast and brag about your sex life, business connections, etc. and spend the entire day trying (even if successfully) to get someone booted (apparently unaware how easy it is to just create another userid - OOPS) - then the only possible conclusion is your life has indeed been ruined by an anonymous poster on an anonymous comments board.

It just doesn't wash. No executive or otherwise well-connected person would engage in such a waste of time. Gadsden simply childishly pushed his buttons all day and he lost his mind trying childishly to retaliate. The higher his supposed business and educational success, the more embarassing the whole thing becomes.

I have engaged both of those posters civilly in the past. It almost seems like someone else got their passwords and just decided to trash them. Just terribly stupid.

Oh Jeebus!
I see yall have been very busy!
I'm glad archdouche got banned. Gadsden was only trying to push him over the edge.

That was quite a show, very entertaining... but it's over now...

Not sure what "admission" has to do with that OOPS. The OOPS was simply pointing out that if one spent all that time and effort to get someone banned, he must not have realized how easy it is to just get a new id and continue. Thus OOPS! I just reread my post, it's pretty clear.

The point is to simply call BS on the classic "I really busted up his hand with my face!" argument that elmer was trying to play on behalf of arch. Arch didn't plan all along to get himself and Gadsden banned. He just completely lost it when Gadsden would not stop with the juvenile taunts even when arch resorted to the pitifully false and delusional threat to call on some authority that he is exclusively connected to.

There was plenty of "5 year old" to go around on both sides. The difference was Gadsden was the taunter and arch was the tauntee. I would have expected arch, based on past posts, to have been better at recognizing what was happening. Instead he kept posting to point out that Gadsden would not stop posting. It was pathetic.

Come on. Let's get banned!

Posted by MooMoo on August 14, 2008 at 4:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

LOL at ElmerArchFuddPirate -

You really believe anyone would crack over the anonymous taunts via a message board ?? AS IF it's even that important.

Screamingly funny and delusional.

Posted by Marianne0558 on August 15, 2008 at 9:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Pffft. Please don't ban me! I would be absolutely devastated!!! I might just have to cry for months on end!!

Whatevs.
