Sunday beer sales on the docket again
Dorchester County Council plans to move forward with a referendum on Sunday beer sales.
A proposed ordinance for a November referendum is up for second-reading approval this evening. The council meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the county services building at 201 Johnston St. in St. George.
Council has also set a special meeting for 9 a.m. next Tuesday for final approval. The special meeting will be held in council chamber in Summerville. It was scheduled to meet the deadline for getting the referendum on the November ballot, Administrator Jason Ward said.
Several council members said Dorchester County store owners are complaining they're losing Sunday beer and wine sales to nearby stores in North Charleston and Summerville, since both those municipalities allow it.
Charleston County allows Sunday beer and wine sales. Berkeley County does not, although Daniel Island and Goose Creek do.
