Beach town wants loan to erase debts

MYRTLE BEACH — Atlantic Beach has paid many of its overdue bills. Now, the town wants a $400,000 loan to finish paying its debts and court judgments.

Interim Town Manager Charles Williams told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach the loan could lead the financially troubled town to freedom from debt.

Williams said at least two banks are willing to consider making the loan. He said the town budget approved this week provides more than $200,000 to begin repaying the debt.

Williams said he hopes to have a loan for Town Council to consider by September.

The Municipal Association of South Carolina sent Williams in after the suspensions of Mayor Irene Armstrong and Town Manager Marcia Conner this spring.

Williams says he found about $620,000 in unpaid bills when he arrived earlier this year.
