S.C. Governor's Cup surfing contest on tap

More than 250 surfers from across the Southeast will compete at Folly Beach this weekend in the S.C. Governor's Cup of Surfing.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at The Washout on Folly Beach. Surfing continues through Sunday afternoon. In addition to competition in 28 divisions, there will be a beach party at the Folly Beach Holiday Inn on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The party is free to competitors, $6 for others.

The Push `n Surf Division for young surfers will be held Saturday. Registration for this event will be on the beach, but space is limited to the first 30 kids who sign up. All Push `n Surfers will receive a contest T-shirt and trophy with $15 entry fee.

The Governor's Cup Awards Ceremony will be immediately after the finals on Sunday afternoon at The Conch Restaurant at the corner of East Ashley Avenue and Center Street on Folly Beach.

College track

South Carolina hurdler Jason Richardson has been named the Division I Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year. The award came from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Richardson was unbeaten in collegiate competition at the 110-meter hurdles this outdoor season. He capped it by winning an NCAA title in June.

Richardson also posted a 3.46 grade-point average while majoring in sports management.

He is a senior from Cedar Hill, Texas.

College basketball

The Charleston Southern men held local pro team Visla Krakow to only two points in the second quarter on the way to an 83-50 win in Krakow, Poland, their third straight victory on their four-game tour in the Eastern European nation.

Jamarco Warren led CSU with 22 points, and Giedrius Knysas added 18 points. The Buccaneers have held their opponents to 50 or fewer points in all three games.

The Bucs have today off.
