Page mixes it up a little too much
On The Beat: Clemson
Larry Williams
CLEMSON — Maybe someone should tell Kenneth Page to quit while he's behind.
Page, a freshman offensive lineman, has already found himself embroiled in two fights in the first week of practice.
And neither ended well for him. On Monday, he mixed it up with defensive tackle Jamie Cumbie and fell victim to a pad-rattling body slam. In Thursday's morning practice, he got into it with freshman linebacker Stanley Hunter and was body-slammed again.
And Hunter didn't stop there. Page's helmet flew off, and Hunter delivered a punch that left a large welt above Page's left eye.
"It just happens," said Page, a Columbia native who's expected to redshirt this season. "We're practicing aggressive and tough, and some defensive guys get mad when I hit them. They get mad, and I just fight back. … You win some, you lose some."
Some players say tempers have been flaring more than usual thus far during preseason practice. Page's dustup with Cumbie triggered a lengthy fight between offense and defense.
Freshman defensive end Da'Quan Bowers was involved in the fracas and said offensive lineman Jamarcus Grant yanked him to the turf by his long dreadlocks.
"We've had a good bit of fights," said coach Tommy Bowden. "The older guys, sometimes they get competitive. And then when you sign good young guys, there's competition for position. … Sometimes that creates a little higher level of intensity and emotion out there."
Not backing down
Senior Haydrian Lewis is being presented with two stern challenges: returning from an ACL tear, and playing a new position after shifting from cornerback to safety.
But Lewis, a former Stratford High standout, appears driven to press on and prove himself during preseason camp.
"It's my goal to make it through camp and not have to sit out and watch everybody else practice," he said. "I just want to make it through this fight because I know it'll get easier during the season."
Lewis suffered the knee injury at Georgia Tech in the first quarter of the fifth game. It was one quarter too late for him to be eligible for a medical hardship.
He has sent an appeal to the NCAA in hopes of returning in 2009. In the meantime, he's trying to fight off freshman Spencer Adams for the backup spot to starting "Cat" safety Michael Hamlin.
"It's a whole lot more thinking at safety, so it's not really an easy transition for me," he said. "In our defense, the safety basically runs the defense. We make a lot of coverage checks and stuff like that. You've got to see motions and everything. It's a little bit different."
Lewis said he's dealing with soreness in his right knee.
"After taking nine months off, it's kind of tough. But it's just something you've got to push at and get better at."
This and that
Guard David Smith (dislocated toe) said he's been cleared for practice and will return today … Bowden said 11 first-year freshmen could end up playing this season. The same number avoided redshirts last year, the most in nine seasons under Bowden … Junior "bandit" end Ricky Sapp was unblockable during the second session of Thursday's two-a-day, Bowden said … Offensive tackle Chris Hairston is limited with a hamstring injury.

What you aren't going to "garantee" anything on this message board?
Hope you didn't "thoght" too hard when you were counting all those posts on the gamecock article.
Page is a Columbia Native. I bet that is where he learned to get his "thug on this pre-season."

He may be from Columbia, but he represents YOUR pure as snow coach and school.
I thought that Tammy Bowden was a saint, a Baptist minister, and a great judge of character. Why would Saint Tammy bring in a Columbia thug to his "pure as snow" program?

for you coots:
Since joining the SEC in 1992, Carolina has had a winning record in the conference twice. In the eleven seasons as a member of the SEC, Carolina boasts a conference record of 50-77-1. Although Carolina has yet to finish in the top two of the Eastern division, they have finished last twice.!!!!!!!
Carolina has yet to win six conference games in a season, something only Kentucky and Vanderbilt have done in the last 14 seasons. And no one should forget the fact that Carolina went two consecutive seasons without winning one conference game, not one. Carolina had an impressive string of 21 consecutive games with a loss snapped in 2000 by beating New Mexico State (then let the rest of the country know what Carolina football was all about by tearing down the goal-posts). Since 1992, only three times has any non-probation member of the conference failed to win two or more games overall in a season-South Carolina has accomplished this feat twice, Kentucky once

Chanticleer---providing facts and proof of usc's pathetic football program will not deter them from accusing Clemson of having a poor football program because the Tigers play in ACC. The gamecocks know and are reminded constantly they have one of the worst records in the ENTIRE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL regardless of conference affiliation---and they know its unlikely that will ever change. They are embarrased to the very core of their beings that their rival has not only humiliated them on the playing field 9 out of the last 11 times (not to mention historically as well), but that their school is light years behind Clemson in EVERY ACADEMIC RANKING published for years. You can understand all their vitriol and childish name calling because they simply can't get it done...all they have left is their hatred---their dignity has been gone for a long, long time. usc is located in South Carolina's capitol city, but they only capital they're familiar with is the huge "L" that is their reputation----"LOSER".
So many chickens, so much chicken excrement.

SBS: Must suck to have only yourself to talk to. Hence all the notes to yourself.
The spelling mistakes were from all your cock friends. It's ok if you don't understand what quotation marks mean. Just go ask someone that didn't go to USC.
Sorry I missed that story with his myspace picture. I guess from your laptop in your mom's basement you don't miss any of them.

well here we go again, no discipline, players running the team. Remember davis saying if I dont get the ball Im going pro. Give Me the ball and I will get you the bowl win.WRONG again coach davis. Remember the lineman in the same game yelling at the coaches on national tv. That had to be embarrasing to the coach's having a kid talk to them like they were dogs. Remember tammy almost crying after lose to duke. That was a highlight on espn for 2 weeks. well USC may or may not be good this year but we know the players dont run the team.

rebel: you are right about that. The coaches should be running the team. These players are very dominating and aggressive, and the coaches only have themselves to blame if they don't have their team under control. Then again it is real easy to say what they should and shouldn't do when I am not involved.

Did they take ANY disciplinary action? (gassers, sprints, push-ups...) ANYTHING? If not, then they will lose the respect of the players who "really" want to play ball at Clemson...

I cant wait till these guys get hold of the sec doormat in November . A bad day as a Tiger is better than a good day as a chicken .
Example
Bad day as a tiger , we lose to a real sec team in a bowl game
Good day as a chicken , the chickens who are not in a bowl (thanks to there DADDY beating them again) depending on another team to beat us in a bowl
Enjoy
