Almost two dozen people evacuated from N. Charleston business during chlorine leak
Employees of Salisbury Electrical Safety, 4295 Atlanta St., North Charleston, were evacuated from the business for about four hours today because of a chlorine leak.
The North Charleston Fire Department was notified at 9:13 a.m. that there was a chlorine leak at the business, Batalion Chief Eric Phillips said.
When firefighters arrived, the building had been evacuated, Phillips said. There were about 23 employees there at the time.
One man who was closest to the leak was experiencing respiratory problems and was taken to Roper St. Francis Hospital for treatment. His condition is not known at this time.
The cause of the leak is under investigation.
The plant was cleared by the fire dept and everybody was able to return between noon and 12:30 p.m., Phillips said.
An employee had turned off the leaky valve but firefighters weren't sure if it was closed completely or not so they completed a thorough check of the building.
OSHA was notified, Phillips said.
