Critically acclaimed quintet The Hold Steady will play a show in the Lowcountry this weekend.
Since releasing its debut "Almost Killed Me" in 2004, Brooklyn-based quintet The Hold Steady has built a large, cultlike following of fans and critics. Known for its expansive, voluminous song structure and unique vocal style, The Hold Steady has been hailed by the critics of many well-known publications, including Rolling Stone, The Village Voice and Blender. Vocalist Craig Finn's distinct voice is boisterous and reminiscent of Elvis Costello's punkish but friendly vocal rants. Finn's style is more of a rhythmic talking than singing; a style that accentuates his devilishly clever lyrics. The band's hard work has earned them opening slots with bands like The Rolling Stones and Kings of Leon, as well as a record deal with Vagrant Records. The Hold Steady is touring in support of its latest release "Stay Positive" and will perform at The Pour House, 1977 Maybank Highway, Sunday with The Loved Ones. Tickets are $15 at the door or online at charlestonpourhouse.com. Call 571-4343 for info.
Joel Hamilton
Taking a rest from his frontman duties of The
Working Title, Joel Hamilton will celebrate the release of his debut solo effort "Officina." The lo-fi and largely acoustic album reveals Hamilton's gift for songwriting. The recording is built on bare bone hooks and melody. "Officina" is organic yet vibrant, filled with subtle surprises while still retaining the warm familiarity fans of The Working Title have come to love. Hamilton's evocative voice is painful and beautiful as it battles between hope and despair. Joel Hamilton will perform at The Village Tavern, 1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Friday. Tickets are $6 at the door or online at village-tavern.com.
Friends For Hire
Charleston-based power-pop/rock quintet Friends For Hire is poised for a promising new year. The group of 20-somethings released its full-length debut "Dollars & Sense" with acclaimed producer Matt Malpass (Inkwell, Copeland) late last year and will hold a CD release show for its sophomore effort "Avant-Garde" Saturday at The Music Farm. Despite the members' young ages, FFH's songs are firmly structured and well-executed, with excellent composition and solid musicianship. The band's melodic and high-energy rock sound is a crowd-pleaser both in the group's live performances and recordings. Armed with tight hooks, sing-a-long melodies and a strong Charleston fan base, a very big year looks likely for this up-and-coming act. Holiday Parade and Sent By Ravens also will perform. Doors open at 8 p.m., tickets are $7 at the door. The Music Farm is located at 32 Ann St. Call 577-6969 for more information.
Yonrico Scott
Yonrico Scott has proven himself as a phenomenal drummer, having played with such artists as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry and even M.C Hammer over the last 25 years. He has even shown his writing capability with the Derek Trucks Band, for which he is the drummer and co-songwriter. But it's Scott's own project that allows his talent to shine the most. The Yonrico Scott Band performs a wonderful arrangement of smooth jazz, funk and jam-band styles. The trio will appear at The Pour House, 1977 Maybank Hwy., Friday with Fat Chance. Tickets are $8 at the door or online at etix.com. Call 571-4343 or visit www.charlestonpourhouse.com.
