Officer accused of rape
Woman says she went on 1 date with detective
By Nadine Parks , Chase Purdy
A woman who told authorities that a Hanahan police detective raped her at gunpoint on Sunday said that on their first and only date she knew something wasn't right.
On the other side of town, a man who watched the officer grow up in the Waylyn subdivision in North Charleston said he has trouble believing that Cassie Watson could commit such a crime.
Watson, 40, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He remained at the Charleston County Detention Center on Monday night. His total bond was set at $325,000.
The North Charleston woman, in an affidavit, said she met Watson about two years ago through an online dating service. She said they talked by phone until about a year ago, when he came to her home to take her out for dinner and a movie. She saw red flags that night, she said.
"I didn't trust him from the get-go," she said. "He was possessive, controlling, and he was calling me names."
She said she made it clear there wouldn't be a second date.
"I just kind of brushed it off, and I thought, 'OK, I don't ever have to see him again,' " she said. "He quit calling, and then, all of a sudden, two weeks ago, he popped up at my door."
The woman said Watson came to her home several times in recent weeks, and she became increasingly concerned.
On Sunday, Watson walked into her open front door and plopped himself down in a chair, she said.
Watson pointed the gun in her face and, according to the affidavit, she thought that if she did not do what he ordered, she would end up in a "body bag." He forced her to disrobe and raped her, the affidavit said.
She called authorities about 10 minutes later, she said. She was taken to Medical University Hospital for an examination, a police report said. The 37-year-old was recovering at home Monday night and agreed to be interviewed if she could remain anonymous. The Post and Courier does not normally identify rape victims.
Watson is accused of using his police gun in the attack, Hanahan police Lt. Michael Fowler said. He said North Charleston police took possession of the weapon.
Bob Koon has been Watson's neighbor for decades. "I find it hard to believe," Koon said of the allegation. "I've known him since he was 6 years old. He's a swell guy. I don't understand."
Watson, a former prison guard for the S.C. Department of Corrections, has worked for Hanahan police since 2006, Fowler said. He said Watson is suspended from his job without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Something smells fishy here! If this woman knew from the jump that he was bad news then why she did't tell someone about it? or better, notify his department. It been plenty of time between the first date and the aledged rape. I have my own thoughts about this, but wiat on the findings. Also, he is not liked by someone of authority in his department. Just wait and see the outcome!!!

Why would you have someone you met online pick you up from your apartment? Sure you talked to him by phone for a year, but that doesn't mean you know him well enough to let him know where you live. Just a thought. I hope they figure out if this man is guilty. And I hope the victim can get through this.

Wow...I don't knock online dating but...I damn sure would not let anyone I met online meet me at my house on the first date. We'd have to meet somewhere in public and probably drive seperate cars. And if he was acting an azz on the first date, why go through with it? I would have left his behind. But I digress.
We'll see what the outcome is.

On the news this morning, they said he was on leave with pay. I agree how can he get such a high bond and the murderer gets a $15,000 bond. Again it is who you know. He will have to stay in a separate cell at the jail. They won't put him out in general population.

I agree with a few of you, he didn't kill anyone (although his crime is deplorable also) so why is his bond so high? Sametta Heyward cooked her kids (for lack of a better phrase) and got off with $15,000. Those babies had life left in them worth phenomenally more than $15,000. I just don't understand that either. I guess I just dont understand how bonds are determined.
Amanda, I agree with you also, they wouldn't dare put him in general population. He'd get hurt or worse, killed. Retaliation is a bytch.

If she was leary from the get go a year ago, then why not report and get a restraining order in those recent weeks?
Why leave your front door open- if someone had increasing concerns?
Why not get the heck out of dodge when he did walk in the left open door? Call 911, run like heck, grab the can of mace?
It's 2008 and women have been taught for years how to protect themselves against any possible attacks and then again how to "make up" garbage also! I'm not saying any women deserves treatment like this, but come on- leary in the beginning, been coming around the past few weeks, leaves door unlocked, was this the first time he used/showed any type of violence?
Let's see if any other women met/encountered from the the on-line dating service come up with the same situations!
Way too many unanswered questions in this situation!
I saw a kid at the age of 26 ruined becasue daddy's cop daughter told a guy she was 22 (fake ID and all) and she was sneaking out of the house to meet the guy, etc. Cop daddy found out and little girl cried rape, forced to do acts, etc. to avoid getting into trouble with Papa bear.
Papa Bear went off, making a scene, arrests, etc. and baby girl finally broke under the pressure and told the truth but only after having this young man's life ruined!!

While letting someone you met online come to your home on the 1st date isn't a good idea, the fact that he's a cop may have played into that decision. However, let's not blame the victim...that's one of the reasons some women don't report a rape.

WOW...It not surprising that some of you are blaming the victim since this guy suppose to be an upstanding cop.
The last rape case that was in the paper you all burned the guy at the stake right away. Everyone knows my feelings about rapist.
Rape is rape no matter what. He went into her home and put a gun to her face and made her disrobe. Don't care if she just picked him up of the streets. Rape is Rape.
When your are someone that the citizen's suppose to trust, your bail is going to be very high. He uses his authority to force his self on someone. There have to be some truth to this, since he did get suspended without pay.

Ummmm.......some of you seriously need to back off with comments about the victim's behavior in this. First off, it is never easy to translate those "feelings" about someone into action. Since it's just a feeling it's difficult to know how to act or what to do (are you right or are you wrong in feeling that way, etc.). Also, it's not like she invited him in....he walked right in.
And, why is someone blaming her because she didn't take out a restraining order on the guy? Duh....I'm thinking she probably didn't see this one coming. The facts will hopefully come out but please, don't start blaming the alleged victim for ANYTHING she did.
If she was raped she is in enough pain as it is.

Just one more reason why you should NOT date a cop. They can be your best friend, and they can be your worst enemy. And they band together to support each other whether they know the facts or not. It's an unwritten law.
I don't think we'll ever know the truth on this one. What goes on behind closed doors, unfortunately, remains a mystery. Yeah, there are good cops out there, ... but would I want my daughter dating one not know if he was one of the 'good guys'? Not in a million years. Why? Because if he turns out to be one of the 'bad cops'.... the price to pay turns out to be VERY high.
I hope they get to the bottom of this, and whomever is lying is brought to justice. Be it her, or him. Rape is not a joking matter, and should be taken very seriously. Claiming rape that didn't occur is also a serious crime, and should be dealt with intensly.
I'm sure the Dr. report and such will help clarify whether she was raped or not, and their history will come out too... whether she did reject his advances or if she led him on. I'm just glad I'm not a judge. I would never want to hold the fate of human life in my hands... not ever really knowing the truth.

a restraining order is something hard to get..I know women who can't get one on their exes without having to jump through a lot of hoops.
reporting rapes to the authorities is also humiliating and hard to do against a cop. I know women who still are waiting after 3 yrs for their day in court after their police officer bf beat them up....the media doesn't always show these incidents

Jane, too many women take the stance that they won't get hurt because they are a woman. Learn to defend yourself! With your hands, feet, teeth, a bat, a knife, a gun, anything!
My wife is the most timid person when it comes to other people and confrontation but I assure you of one thing: I taught her how to take care of herself in exactly THIS type of situation.
This lady let him see her house...First mistake. This lady had an open door AFTER seeing him around a few times...Second mistake. She didn't fight...Final mistake.
Do you think he would have pulled the trigger if she fought back? Maybe, but most people wouldn't...their too scared. The pistol is used more often than not as a scare tactic only. If he is guilty of this crime, he should have his privates cut off. If she's lying, she should do the time in jail that he would have for rape.
As you said:
"Do you honestly think the police dept. would have done something because she had a "bad feeling about him" or because he "called her names"?"
Don't trust anyone. Prepare yourself. Think defensive. That's what she COULD HAVE done, Jane.

The general lack of interest in this state against prosecutions for false police reports and perjury lead me to suspect a profit incentive behind these failures. I hope that Detective Watson gives serious consideration to a major law suit if he is proven innocent in this alleged rape.

Rape in itself is a terrible, horrific, violent and terrifying situation to find yourself in. No matter what the circumstances are that surround the victim or the alleged assailant, NO means NO.
NO MEANS NO.
This behavior should be seriously investigated.
As a victim, and I use the word as this officer used it loosely on me while I was in the hospital seeking medical treatment for crimes committed against myself; I remember behavior that is by description the same as to what I am reading about with this officer, realistic.
BY THIS SAME OFFICER.
Upon visiting my home as chief detective in my case, this detective began yelling at me AFTER I told him to leave my home. His attitude was that of NO PROFESSIONALISM.
And mind, I was not alone, as I had a witness there.
I also filed a formal complaint with the Hanahan PD for investigation and who knows, maybe there was one.

In the hospital, this officer stated he was the biggest "as@hole I would meet and that he was my "Black Knight in shining armor". He then showed me names of alleged rape victims in his phone, that could call him 24/7 for support. (He had 2 phones there)
Is that not why ALL victims are given a victim's advocate?
Is that not why we are given numbers for referral for counseling?
Needless to say that I freaked when I saw his pic and read this story.
As a "victim" that has this man as chief detective on their case, I also have to wonder, "What if I had been alone that Saturday afternoon in my home?"
I would suppose that one could also wonder how far would an alleged assailant go in order to get off of their charges, or for that matter, their paid investigative team (counsel), as I would imagine all of this detective's cases would be up for review?
How many other "could be" victims are out there reading the same article that I am reading wondering the same things I am?.
How many other "alleged assailants" are out there basking in what could or could not mean "your charges may soon be dropped?
To any woman who has been raped...SEEK professional counseling.
First and foremost.
YOU WILL NEED IT.
Whatever your case may be, you will need it.
I trust that this investigation will be sought with as much vigilance as any other case!!!!!?????
And the TRUTH will ARISE

Not only can a citizen file a false police report & get away w/ it, even if police decide not to take action on the report, a lying citizen himself can then sign a warrant for another's arrest based on a false affidavit.. landing the true victim in jail..at least until a bond hearing is held.
I know a man to whom this happened.
In this case a 3rd party witness(store employee) & store video tape could(& later did) prove as false, claims made by a lunatic lier in an initial police report & subsequent affidavit upon which an arrest was made.
In the end, the prosecutor dismissed the charges & the arrest was expunged from the record, but not before an innocent man spent an entire day in jail & in excess of $1500 was spent on an attorney.
IF A PROPER INVESTIGATION OF THE INITIAL POLICE REPORTS HAD OCCURRED THE POLICE WOULD HAVE HAD SOLID EVIDENCE OF A FALSE POLICE REPORT.
Two police reports were filed in this case. One was truthful & one was false. Neither was properly investigated & due to this an innocent man spent a day in jail & was in jeopardy of losing his new job. He did not have $ at the time for an lawyer, but an attorney friend of his paid another lawyer to help him fight this outrageous wrong.
If police had investigated & taken action for the crime of making a false police report, the lying citizen would've been far less likely to have made a false affidavit & sign a warrant for another's arrest based on that false statement.
However, the lying citizen had no repercussion whatsoever from either of his dastardly deeds-a false police report & subsequent false affidavit presented to the court.
Only after the victim had an attorney, was the video tape evidence which clearly exonerated him from the false claim, looked at w/ any care.
This evidence & the employee account were available the night the reports were made. This tape, as well as the employee statement, actually implicated the man who made the false claim on what SHOULD HAVE BEEN an ABHAN charge & arrest of him by the police.
After all of this the detective who should have properly investigated the initial charge in the 1st place told the innocent man he was going to go question the lying citizen further.
Later however, even in the face of evidence they no longer had to "track down", the detective told the innocent man that his supervisor told him that "IF THEY TRACKED DOWN ALL THE FALSE REPORTS THEY GET THAT'SALL THEY WOULD D0" !! & so he was discouraged from spending his time following up on this case.
The detective then encouraged the man to press charges himself against the crazy lying citizen. (i.e."We can't be bothered by this little stuff, but you can handle it yourself")

Oh, I forgot, in order to have the arrest expunged, the innocent man had to fork over a $100 fee (I believe I recall that amount correctly) to erase the record of an arrest that should never have occurred! In addition there were other misc. court fees etc. associated with this case.

I would have to agree that everyone needs to lay off of the victim. Sexual Assault is a serious crime. Everyone also needs to remember that a person's rights are the same for Detective Watson. He is innocent until proven guilty. It is however very hard to believe that such a violent act could be committed by Detective Watson. I have had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he has always been very professional. If he is found guilty, I would tell him to his face do the crime, do the time. But until he has his day in court, he is innocent. I can assure you that if this turns out to be a false accusation, Detective Watson will do the right thing. I know of people that don't like him and still don't believe that he is capable of committing CSC. Hang in there Detective Watson.! Carlton is missed!

Rape is a serious crime and my heart goes out to any true victims. When women make false allegations, it makes it hard for the rest of us. Watson didn't rape this woman. Cassie, I stand behind, alongside and with you 100%.

Cassie I stand behind you all the way! I have known Cassie for several years now, I know the type of person that he is and the professionalism that he carries in his job. People should really start paying attention to all of the holes in this "victim's" story. It's amazing what you may figure out.
