Rutledge Avenue will become two-way street Thursday
Updated 02:09 p.m., April 9, 2008
A section of Rutledge Avenue in Charleston will become a two-way street tomorrow morning, a change that's intended to reduce speeding and improve neighborhood quality of life.
Commuters during the morning rush will find one lane of Rutledge Avenue blocked off at Calhoun Street, as the city prepares for the mid-morning conversion to two-way traffic, on Rutledge between Calhoun and Broad streets.
One southbound lane of Rutledge Avenue between Broad and Calhoun will remain open, according to city officials.
Rutledge Avenue is currently a one-way southbound street from just above the Crosstown Expressway to Murray Boulevard, with two traffic lanes.
The change to two-way traffic is part of a larger trend in downtown Charleston that began several years ago when Wentworth and Beaufain streets were converted to two-way streets.
Ashley Avenue between Broad and Calhoun is also scheduled to switch to two-way traffic, tentatively on May 1.
A similar change is being studied for Spring and Cannon streets.
