The Charleston NAACP called for school board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook to apologize or resign Tuesday for suggesting that unfit parents should be sterilized.

Charleston NAACP branch President Dot Scott said school board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook should undergo sensitivity training.

After meeting with Cook about her controversial comment over the weekend, the group said she should enroll in sensitivity and diversity training, and urged other members of the county school board to condemn her comment.

"Ms. Cook's remarks show an arrogant and uncaring attitude toward single parents and their children that could easily have a negative impact on the funding, staffing and equipping of their schools," NAACP branch President Dot Scott said during a press conference.

"Her words are especially offensive in the American South, where poor women were once involuntarily sterilized and often, with prejudice, labeled as unfit mothers because of their color or economic class."

Cook declined to comment Tuesday.

Cook is running for Charleston County Council as a Republican. Her campaign spokesman Sean DiSomma said Cook doesn't have anything to apologize for and already has clarified her comments.

DiSomma e-mailed reporters the same statement Cook released last week, with an additional comment: "Regardless of what Ms. Scott thinks or wants, my life has been and will continue to be one of public service for citizens of all ages, races, and sexes," wrote Cook, who is a licensed counselor and runs a homeless shelter for women, children and homeless veterans.

The NAACP became involved in this issue because it's one of equity, said the Rev. Joe Darby, vice president of the Charleston branch. People sometimes erroneously think that the NAACP is involved in matters tied only to black people, he said.

Scott said the statements were offensive to anyone who has respect for human dignity, regardless of their race.

In a press release, the state and national offices of the NAACP supported the Charleston branch's position on Cook's comments.

Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston, didn't attend the news conference but released a statement asking the county and state Republican parties to denounce Cook's candidacy. "The Republican Party should be embarrassed to have one of its candidates take such a preposterous stand," he said.

Charleston County Republican Party Chairwoman Lin Bennett said she didn't hear Cook's comment in context. She declined a request for an interview.

Reader poll

What should Charleston School Board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook do in response to the NAACP's request?

  • Take the NAACP's suggestion and agree to enroll in sensitivity and diversity training. 10% 157 votes
  • Resign her position on the school board. 10% 148 votes
  • Nothing. People are making too big a deal about her comments. 79% 1160 votes

1465 total votes.

Darby, Scott and Ford should worry about how to resolve the issue of teen pregnancy and "stop wasting their time going on television to grab headlines and trying to crucify a loyal public servant who has actually tackled this issue head on," DiSomma wrote in the same e-mail he sent to reporters Tuesday.

If Cook is concerned about the issue of teen pregnancy, Scott said, she should form a group to talk about the problem rather than talk about it on the radio. Her comment was made Thursday on WTMA-AM's "Morning Buzz with Richard Todd" during a discussion about poor graduation rates in the nation's 50 biggest cities.

Charleston schools Superintendent Nancy McGinley declined a request for an interview Tuesday, as did school board Chairman Hillery Douglas. Cook's opponent in the County Council race, veteran GOP Councilman Curtis Bostic, also declined an interview request.

Controversial comment

School board Vice Chairwoman Nancy Cook's comment on WTMA-AM last week:

"We're not standing up as people and saying we've had enough of that. We're not paying for another baby, maybe one baby, but after that, we're taking the baby. And maybe you get sterilized. I know that sounds kind of extreme and radical, but we're in times to where — think about America. When is it OK for America not to be No. 1? When did we get out of that?"

Nancy Cook you've got my vote! As long as we continue to tip-toe around these issues and paying for other people's bad choices - we will continue down the path we're on. I admire Ms. Cook for saying what she believes and not sugar coating it.

While I may not agree with her statement as a public figure, what she is talking about is certainly a problem. I have had students with not one baby but three. A student who has these responsibilities very rarely can be a stellar student. Marginal at best. Attendance becomes a large issue.

It isn't fair to the schools and teachers because of the pressure we are under to educate everyone and meet high standards. How can we if a segment is out on maternity leave or with sick babies?

Should she take it back or apologize? Depends on whether or not she wants to stay where she is. NAACP won't give up. And it doesn't matter that the real focus should be in the black families.

I just don't understand how we came to be in such a state - when I was in high school, they didn't allow single parent teen agers to be in school with other students - you had to go finish school at a night school - allowing children to be in school with two and three babies is just rewarding negative behavior. I agree with Ms. Cook, one welfare baby is enough - be responsible for yourself and don't get knocked up. It's too easy to go to the clinic and get free birth control - if you want to be a slut and sleep around.

I think that mothers on welfare should have to get the depo shot every three months. REGARDLESS OF RACE. If you don't show up on that third month for your birth control, you don't get your check. Generations upon generations are born into the welfare bracket. It's getting out of hand. I also agree about the unfit mothers being sterilized.

Why does the NAACP always have to get involved. Holy Crap, how many people have them on speed dial?! All it takes is for one minority to get offended at what she said, and low and behold, the NAACP rides into town. Who do the whites call when they get offended? Oh wait, we don't call in the re-enforcements.

The truth is the truth. You can't argue with the facts, even though a lot of people try! Sorry if the black community was offended by what Nancy Cook said, but you can't always call in the calvary. No, it seems you can.

Involuntary sterilization is wrong. It may be time that we, the people and government, stop assuaging our conscience by simply keeping these government subsidized children alive physically while condemning these young, innocent children to lives of poverty and hardship by leaving them with a caregiver that demonstrates a lack of ability and understanding to rear a child by have another that requires our treasure. Everyone can make a serious mistake and most often recover with a little assistance. However, if a mother with one child, both supported by us, has another child requiring further support, then that deliberate act, not accident, should require that we take these children and give them to fellow citizens who do want children and will support them. At that point, we can put the mother off the dole. I have not figured out yet how to deal with the father that has no honor.

The NAACP is a RACIST org' that needs to be disbanded. Period. Mrs. Cook was right on with her comments. Personally, if a woman has more than 1 child while on welfare then she needs to be 'fixed'. There are such things as birth controle and if they refuse to use any of the many choices available why should tax payers have to foot their bill? While this may not be the norm, I have actually met a woman who had 2 kids and wanted to get pregnant again so her assistance check would be that much more. It really sickened me to hear that. Lets also think about the types of values that the children from these situations learn. The cycle needs to be broken. NOW

Ms. Cook spoke her mind, about time someone did. We really need to look at the children in these situations, IT ISN'T FAIR TO THEM, they are the ones that suffer in these situations. This isn't a racial remark, it applies to all, even men, they are as guilty as women. Having babies left and right and not taking care of a single one. Just because they aren't the ones that got pregnant, doesn't mean they shouldn't be held responsible as well. Here is to responsible mothers and fathers who take care of their kids and no how to say when they have populated this world enough!!!!

Interesting. Some of you on this very board reproach NAACP for their seemingly racists stances and yet turn around and refer to black folk as 'COLORED'. For those of you who seem so inclined to speak of an entire race in such derogatory terms, you are no different than those you oppose.

For the record, I certainly empathize with Ms. Cook's sentiments. It is frustrating to see the continued rise in out-of-wedlock births and the manner in which our current govt. seems to encourage the vicious cycle monetarily and with benefits that the rest of us work hard to pay for. I'm sure that Ms. Cook's remarks were born out of the same frustration. Upon further consideration I find her remarks to be rather foolish and not viable. Especially in light of her current council seat campaign. Furthermore the federal Supreme Court has ruled involuntary sterilization to be unconstitutional and I'm sure forced contraceptives would be seen in the same light, at least legally. The same goes with just arbitrarily 'taking' the children away. Most of you out there complain about your rising taxes, just where do you think the money is going to come from when all of these children end up in foster care, group homes and orphanages? In this country there are already tens of thousands of black babies and children in 'the system' with no hope of adoption. There aren't enough foster homes for these kids so many of them stay institutionalized until the age of 18 where they are given for the most part a suitcase, a few hundred dollars and phone numbers of counselors who will try to help them to adjust to the world that they were turned out to. Black families as a whole cannot or will not absorb through adoption that many kids and white people would rather go to Russia, China or South/Central America to adopt babies/children than adopt the Black ones that are already here. I'm just waiting for some of you out there to start mandating abortion like China. That country forces sterilization, abortions & contraception at gunpoint.

NOT TO MENTION THE MENTAL STRESS THESE YOUNG WOMEN ARE LIVING WITH DAILY IS ENOUGH TO MAKE ANYONE CRAZY. CONTINUATION:

Instead of lashing out, a logical & comprehensive revamping of the system as it stands should be implemented. PREVENTION is the key. It will take time, but if you cut off the money after the first child then the incentive to NOT have additional children will develop on its own. Cut off food stamps. Only allow for health care for the child itself not the parent. Give enforceable time limits on monetary benefits to include public housing. Before getting any assistance name the father of the child and submit to paternity testing. Enforce child support enforcement laws already on the books.

Furthermore stop letting extreme far right conservatives, the uber Christians highjack every attempt at teaching these children the truth about sex, STDs and pregnancy. Emphasize abstinence as the only 100% prevention but also be real about consequences and prevention in regards to the behaviors they are already exhibiting. We also need to rip into the far left liberals who want to coddle these people and offer excuses for this behavior. For far too long liberals have not owned up to their responsibility in this crisis and they've also held the level of expectations lower and lower for minority children and adults. And as a result our society is reaping what was sown.

I reiterate, Nancy Cook's remarks were born out of frustration. I get that. I even share in it. But this rally call to rip out 'colored' peoples reproductive organs is one, not going to happen and two is truly an act of futility.

As a retired military soldier of twenty-four years (Army) a leader should know how to express there concerns without use improper language. How would you feel if your children took on the same attitude when expressing there views with others using the same language they got from Mom or Dad? If we continue to reward bad behavior what type of examples we as adults and parents would be setting for our children. Let's get real! The more we support issues like this the more our children will continue to behavior in the manners that they do because they are so use to hearing adults disrespect each other. The following are core ethical values that we sometime forgot:

Trustworthiness
Be honest • Don't deceive, cheat or steal • Be reliable - do what you say you'll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal - stand by your family, friends and country

Respect
Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don't threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

Responsibility
Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act - consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices

Fairness
Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to others • Don't take advantage of others • Don't blame others carelessly

Caring
Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need

Citizenship
Do your share to make your school and community better • Cooperate • Get involved in community affairs • Stay informed; vote • Be a good neighbor • Obey laws and rules • Respect authority • Protect the environment

Just as troubling is that I work with you racists, shop at WalMart with you, and ride the bus with you. It is no wonder the difficulty crossing over and befriending you. Your attitudes are as attitudes of slavery times. It is time to put all this bull behind us. There are bigger fish to fry, global warming, the economy, China's increasing power, and of course education in America. These problems are not going away, nor will white America be able to solve them alone. We are all going to have to pull in the same direction if we as a nation, can expect to endure. Say this with me, "Yes it is me oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer." and let's get to work.

Cleary it's the NAACP making the racist presumptions here. Nowhere in Ms. Cook's statement does she direct her comment to a particular race. Who say's she's not talking about white single mothers? I think she is talking about ALL single mothers who take advantage of the "system."

I'm a big believer in helping those who are in real need; I'm not in favor of the government (taxpayer) supporting what has become and "accepted" lifestyle. If you're going to have children, you must be able to support them --- why on earth is that a novel concept?

The seriousness of the problem does not warrant such a drastic solution. To advocate such a stance is to be incredibly callous to the value of the human rights of the individual.

I applaud Ms. Cook and am sorry that her realistic attitude - not uncaring attitude - has caused her professional life, and I imagine her personal life, such grief. My opinion, as apparently it is many other of the responders, is that we - as a MAJORITY - are sick and tired of seeing the words "freedom", "rights", and "liberty" being streched to the "nth" degree JUST to make something seem "ok" or "justified". I am certain that our founding forefathers are just rolling in their graves screaming "NO.... WE DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY"..... And the fact of the matter is, we have had enough of "justifications" to be irresponsible! What scares me is that people just don't get that!!! The irony is that the freedoms and rights that made our county so GREAT are going to be the same freedoms and rights that make us "not so GREAT".. Don't get me wrong - I still love being an American and I am proud of our military and proud of our country. But, I don't like "just getting by" - I like to be the BEST at whatever I do! And her comments parallel my thoughts - when did we become a joke?

I am all for helping someone in need as long as they are willing to help themselves as well. The point of welfare is to use it to help you get to a point where you don't need it anymore. GET AN EDUCATION, GET A JOB, and GET A CONDOM...it's not rocket science, just common courtesy to all hard working tax-payers. The system is abused and we continue to hand these people free grocery money so they can hop in their Lexus and drive to the Grocery store. I'm tired of it. It's a vicious cycle that will never end unless people stop defending their right to breed however many children they want and instead discipline them for their irresponsible actions. This is not a small problem, it's huge..the money spent on people who abuse the system could be spent on people who actually need it, use it and get off. The worst part of all of it, is that the children we are referring to, are learning how to do the same...and so it continues...

If you are concerned about white america controlling the country, get off your asses and VOTE. The majority of Charleston is black. Yet, when voting time comes along, where is the majority of the population?
Teenage pregnancy is not only a black problem. Teenage pregnancy has no race.
And yes, unfit parents should not be able to make babies all they want and expect us to pay for them. I scrape by trying to feed my ONE child. How is it fair that I have to work doubly hard to pay for all the other babies out there?! GET A JOB, or even two like the rest of us!

For example, I will have patients come in that drive a Lexus or a BMW with all sort of jewelry and their hair colored and styled that I could never afford. Then they hand the front office a Medicaid card!! So we are paying for their children while they get to live the UNEMPLOYED lifestyle. This was daily several times a day that I saw this.

What am I doing wrong? WORKING?? Not right whatsoever. Her comments may have been unethical, but not racial. At least she is woman enough to say how she feels publicly.

Does anyone notice a pattern here? With few exceptions, comments such as those made by Ms. Cook will invariably motivate an advocacy group to demand that the unenlightened commenter issue an apology, tender their resignation, be required to sensitivity training, etc. for expressing their "offensive" comments. This popular tactic, at once, has the effect of branding the commenter as offensive, while the media assists in turning the matter into a referendum on the person making the comments rather than one on the behavior the commenter was calling into question. According to the article, Ms. Cook has the requisite background and experience to know something about the subject on which she was commenting. Ms. Cook's obvious frustration with the behavior she was criticizing (a sentiment likely shared by a considerable portion of her constituency) could have been issued with more tact. The fact remains however, that the important issues Ms. Cook raised will continue to be ignored while special interests and their accomplices in the media further establish the right of the nameless individuals she was critical of to not be offended. Free speech has become only free for some. For the politically incorrect, the cost of speaking is an almost certain attack on their character. Thank God for those who are willing to pay such a price!

I think this is a more true statement than the one you proposed."

Well you can certainly kiss my big toe!

Just because you don't see a plethora of Black pastors pontificating in front of a news camera denouncing Rev. Wright, doesn't mean that they aren't doing so in the pulpit. Instead on giving out 45 second news bites, most Black pastors and their congregations are running soup kitchens, after-school programs, health fairs, fund-raisers for college scholarships, transporting elderly and the infirm to medical appointments, etc.

I'm sure there are some pastors out there spewing hate and ignorance and some of their parishioners lapping up the kool aid. But the majority of churches headed and/or mostly attended by Blacks does not subscribe to that nonsense and do far more within their communities than they seek credit for.

I consider your statement to be asinine and you being ugly for saying it.

No, there is no way of choosing, but SOMETHING needs to be done somehow someway. It really does.

I would rather much sterilization be more of an option than abortions used for birth control. Even if that were an option, which I doubt fingers would be pointed to see who should be sterilized.

Some time ago, I ran into an old girlfriend that I hadn't seen in some time. Her conversation had not changed in years; she literally began talking about the same stuff we discussed since our last meeting years earlier. It was like time stood still in her world.

Charleston is just like that old girlfriend. During my travels, I have lived in or spent time in numerous cities in this country; LA, Chicago, DC, Hawaii, etc. I always keep tabs on whats going on back at home. No other city, large or small, manages to get their britches up in a bunch over stupid comments the way Charleston does. The blacks and whites in Charleston yet refuse to get on the same page. Black folks brand everything as racist even if it isn't, and white folks are just as unlikely to admit discriminatory practices or connotations even when obvious, while assuming that all blacks are far to sensitive.

Hello Charleston, it's 2008. Can we begin giving each other the benefit of the doubt sometime soon? When can we start considering content before we jump to default contextualizations? As for Ms. Cook, she misspoke in the worst way, and may have even betrayed her personal feelings on the matter with her words. Sorry Ms. Cook, but what you said is what you said. At the same time Ms. Scott, can you honestly tell us that you haven't had enough of the social irresponsibility that is rife in our society? And frankly, what has the NAACP done about any of it?

Just curious, how much do these baby mill ladies make, per month, per child? Also, since many seem to be pumping out babies as a source of additional income, shouldn't they be required to obtain a business license? After all, this is a "for profit" enterprise, right?

I am sure that many are legitimately living off of this welfare system and truly love and care for their children. At some point, those folks will turn their situations around and return to the mainstream population.

Then, there are those who will remain in the system for their entire lives. Pumping out more and more babies because they just gotta have that new furniture/TV/SUV/satellite dish/etceteras. These are the ones that need the business license.

Sadly, there is an old joke where the mother has ten kids, all named Billy. When asked what she does if she wants only one specific kid to respond to her call, she replied "then I use their last name.............".

I agree with some of what you say regarding biggoted comments on this thread; however, I completely disagree with your characterization that white people won't adopt these children because they are black.

1-these poor children in the system are not all black
2-color doesn't matter, please note that most internationally adopted kids are of color
3-Domestic adoptions are challenging, ridiculous gov't regulations are often prohibitive. (You can raise your biological child in squallor, but adoptive parents have to pass restrictive fire and health inspections just to mention a few)
4-Too many cases of adoptive parents losing their children because the biological parent changes their mind,or, better yet, "I just heard my old girlfriend had a kid two years ago"
5-Most internationally adopted kids have NO CHANCE in life in their home country. Whereas, in America, even kids in the system have a chance to get out of povery.

There's no two ways about it. White people who live near these areas, and have to send their children to these failing schools have just as much trouble as the Blacks who seem to think they are the only target here. As for forced sterilization, yeah, I'm not sure about that. But there should be a limit of children for whom you can collect welfare benefits. There are long-term birth control methods that are not permanent, which should be mandatory after 1 or 2 children. I love children, but I am not a manufacturer, nor a baby breeder, I am a mother. I care for my children and I provide for them. That is what a family is about.

wares: I agree with some of what you said about the bureaucracy of the adoption process. It is cumbersome and time consuming not to mention expensive. But as far as your statement "color doesn't matter, please note that most internationally adopted kids are of color" color may not matter but apparently ethnicity and race does. Thousands of babies and children are adopted from Eastern Europe, Asia, Central and South America. You don't see white couples clamoring for the hundreds of thousands of African babies left orphans due to war and disease.

As many who regularly read my posts know, I cannot stand race baiters either black or white. Racism is NOT around every corner. And I'm also a firm proponent for personal responsibility and the idea of the Black community looking within itself for answers to its many problems.

With that said it is naÃive to believe that we should just take these Black babies and children and believe that they will be adopted. The statistics just don't support that. White babies/children are far more likely to be adopted than Black babies. Incidentally White babies are in short supply and entire industries have been created to help White couples adopt outside of the US. Does that mean White couples are inherently racists? Perhaps some of them, but not most. But I do find it interesting that many will go anywhere but Africa or even the inner city to adopt babies and children. In a post the other day I mentioned people having an affinity for people of their same race/ethnicity. I still stand by that. I suppose that explains the dearth of prospective adoptive parents for Black children or how so many couples go to other nations to adopt?

Just arbitrarily taking children away from welfare parents will not solve anything. Children should be taken away from bad parents regardless of socio-economic status. Other means of stemming this real-world problem must be devised.

Well, here we go again, the NAACP has taken a general comment and twisted it to suit their sickening need to keep people fired up and fuel hatred. I am not from the South but I have lived here a very, very long time and I fully comprehend EXACTLY what the NAACP not only stands for but promotes. To you Dot Scott - just what exactly does the term "American South" mean anyway? I take offense to that, my skin may not be the same color as yours but it sounds to me like you just slapped a label on a certain group of "women" and YOU are getting away with a racial slur because you are the President of the NAACP. Your use of the words "American South" does not promote progress, integration or anything else. It is a term that implies that the rest of the nation should look down on the poor people of the South because "we be too stoopid and unejumacated to better ourselves."

Nancy Cook's comment was her opinion. Whether you like it or not she is entitled to it. Her choice of words were no different than the choice of words Dot Scott used. If you are going to get fired up over one you really should be getting fired up over both.

To you Nancy Cook - nicely done, you stood up and spoke an opinion you are entitled to- some will agree with you some not.

To you Dot Scott - Get your priorities straight and stop using the NAACP to back handedly support and promote racial tension in this country. If you put nearly as much effort into "real" issues you may have a pretty good group but you don't. You are very much like the KKK, racial and dangerous - to everyone.

Hello Arch,
The members of the welfare state are a segment of the population created for political gain by LBJ's administration. We were a rich country then. Now we are broke and the welfare state he created is a nightmare and it must end. The welfare mothers must be reigned in. Their lifestyle is not normal and it is not right for government to take from the working class to provide all living, eating, and hospitalization for a class of people totally dependent on government. Welfare moms who get pregnant again can refuse sterilization and permanently opt out of welfare. The IRS's taking my money from me to support women I do not have sex with and their children is oppressing me and interfering with me. The welfare state is oppression of the heinous most kind on all working Americans and it must be ended and sterilization is a good start. Read all the posts here Arch and see how mad people are and will support sterilization.

You really don't get it. Most Adopting families do not see race as an issue as you would suggest.."You don't see white couples clamoring for the hundreds of thousands of African babies left orphans due to war and disease." YES I DO!!!

FYI: The US government and the UN open and close countries to the adoption community. African countries have just very recently been opened to US adoption. You make generalized statements that you know nothing about. As a matter of fact, people are flooding to Africa to save these children.

I have read many of your comments and I believe you to be intelligent and articulate. However, you are trying to put a racial spin on the adoption angle that is unfair and untrue. Please stop coloring the adoption community with this racist brush. If the system of domestic adoption were improved, streamlined and the adoptive parents protected, many families adopting internationally would actually prefer the less expensive course of domestic adoption!!!

I am not sure if this has been brought up, but has anyone heard that medicaid WILL NOT pay for a mother to have her tubes tied - even if she asks? Even if she has just had her 6th child? They will continue to provide free birth control though. I know two people who were case workers for medicaid. They both left because they couldn't stand the way things worked.
It is ludicrous. The system is beyond repair.

wares: you are painting me with a racial brush. I shrug off your insinuation of what I was trying to say. There is no 'spin'. I stand by what I say.

Obviously you do not understand what I was saying. You are completely unaware of my breadth of knowledge concerning this particular topic. I know of what I speak. Unlike many of my fellow posters I neither speak anecdotally nor make up stats. I either know what I'm talking about or I take the time to do actual research, analyze the information and make informed observations. Again I stand by my statement

Like the NAACP, if you have a problem with what was said perhaps you or someone you know must feel somehow guilty over it. For that has to be the reason for you to so vehemently insist upon me being wrong.

Again, as my fellow poster Early has to remind me on occasion, read the posts CAREFULLY before responding to them. If you had done so, you would have noticed how much of what you wrote I wholeheartedly agree with.

By the way, for all of us Blacks, Hispanics, Whites and any other ethnicity/race, just because someone says something about a racial issue that happens to be true, it doesn't mean that the person is hell bent on either putting a 'racial spin' on a subject or that they are racist, bigoted or prejudiced.

What is needed is a solution to keep people from having babies if they cannot afford them.

It is pathetic to be picky about what people are called b/c no matter what your opinion or anyone else says, you will be called whatever anyone wants to call you. You should use that energy towards solutions.

Stick to the issue here, which has NOTHING to do with race or the NAACP.

The reason some folks dislike being called colored is because white people sometimes use the word. When whites started using the word, black people started using "women of color" as if white women are colorless. Last time i checked there were white crayons in the box also. Don't ya just hate the broken ones that never stand up on their own? But at the end of the day, it never mattered what color it was, you just hated messing with the ones that were broken. Will we ever say ENOUGH???? racism from the black community has got to stop and perhaps some diversity and sensitivity training should be in order for the racists at the naacp. They are insensitive to all other races, and it seems they are incapable of being diverse. When will they ever embrace being "AMERICAN"???

Believe it or not I was inspired by the hate and dissention that can often be found on any Post and Courier comment board. Based on the feedback we have received from teachers and administrators, our presence makes and have made a difference.

There is hope yet for respectful discussions about touchy subjects such as race, discussions that actually make a difference. There is a great possibility however, it will not occur here.

Alabama
Judge

Some of you may be wondering what Judge Roy Moore has been doing since he was removed from the bench for refusing to remove the Ten Commandments from his courtroom wall. Please read the poem he wrote.

The following is a poem written by Judge Roy Moore from Alabama. Judge Moore was sued by the ACLU for displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom foyer. He has been stripped of his judgeship and now they are trying to strip his right to practice law in Alabama! The judge's poem sums it up quite well.

America the beautiful,
or so you used to be.
Land of the Pilgrims' pride;
I'm glad they'll never see.

Babies piled in dumpsters,
Abortion on demand,
Oh, sweet land of liberty;
your house is on the sand.

Our children wander aimlessly
poisoned by cocaine
choosing to indulge their lusts,
when God has said abstain

From sea to shining sea,
our Nation turns away
From the teaching of God's love
and a need to always pray

We've kept God in our
temples, how callous we have grown.
When earth is but His footstool,
and Heaven is His throne.

We've voted in a government
that's rotting at the core,
Appointing Godless Judges;
who throw reason out the door,

Too soft to place a killer
in a well deserved tomb,
But brave enough to kill a baby
before he leaves the womb.

You think that God's not
angry, that our land's a moral slum?
How much longer will He wait
before His judgment comes?

How are we to face our God,
from Whom we cannot hide?
What then is left for us to do,
but stem this evil tide?

If we who are His children,
will humbly turn and pray;
Seek His holy face
and mend our evil way:

Then God will hear from Heaven;
and forgive us of our sins,
He'll heal our sickly land
and those who live within.

But, America the Beautiful,
If you don't - then you will see,
A sad but Holy God
withdraw His hand from Thee.

~~Judge Roy Moore~~

Interesting. Some of you on this very board reproach NAACP for their seemingly racists stances and yet turn around and refer to black folk as 'COLORED'. For those of you who seem so inclined to speak of an entire race in such derogatory terms, you are no different than those you oppose.
...........................................

The NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. They call themselves colored!!! Is it only racist if a white person uses that term? Look at your statement. Who should you really be questioning? The NAACP should take a long look in the mirror before they start talking about racism. Cooks statements referred to women, not black women specifically. If someone wants to scream about it, shouldn't it be in the name of sexism? I agree with what she said. There are alot of unwanted kids out there who are suffering because their parents won't take personal responsibility.

LET'S THINK ABOUT THIS!
We all talk about our good old days sometimes. When we didn't have all this electronic gadgets and we would take the time to go visit each other, and do the simple things which was a lot to us and made us happy. I can, and you can, go on with the list I am sure.

WHAT IS THE POINT HERE?
Our young generation today which in 50-60 years from now will be at the age we are if they SURVIVE! Will be sitting around a round table and talk about their good old days. This is how it will sound!

Hey man, remember all that good sh--t we used to smoke!
Remember we all gang-banged that shy school girl!
And all the spasm and viruses we used to send out to people!
The baggy pants we wore down to our butt holes!
We used to have cyber sex!
We stole identity.
We used our parent's medication to get high!
We sold drugs to make money!
We carried machine guns in our back pockets!
And if the teacher tried to discipline us we shot him!
And if our parents tried to discipline us we went to the law!
We used to get girls pregnant at the age of 12 or younger!
We never respected our elders!
And all that rap we danced with!
And I can go on and on and on:::::::!

Now, what do we think that the children of these children or should I say our grand children will talk about their teen years!

As I stated when I read this yesterday, Nancy Cook did not target black people. So I really don't get the whole NAACP being involved. I think that instead of wasting time complaining about what someone said, they need to be worried about what's going on in the black community. More and more young girls are having babies out of wedlock. I went to high school with a girl who had been pregnant 6 times before we were seniors, twice in middle school, so I know it's a big problem not just among blacks, but within our society.

I don't understand why we as black people have to be so racist towards people who aren't black. It's just dumb. Organizations like the NAACP discriminate and choose soap boxes to stand on. This being one of them. I wish they would choose more relavent soap boxes though. Ones that can actually solve the problems in the community like young men killing young men, men not wanting to take care of their children, women who have babies on top of babies as if they don't know where they come from, and the glorification of being a "D-Boy". Slavery is over and so is the civil rights era. Sure there is still racism but do you have to make it up in every situation just to make yourself feel important?

"There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs - partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do do not want to lose their jobs."

I am sooooo sick and tired of seeing the NAACP come running to the "rescue" of the people who cry racism. There is nothing racist about Cook's comment. If the statistics show that more blacks are on welfare and are more unfit than any other race, then obviously what Cook said would apply to those particular people. If it applied to say the white people, we wouldn't be calling in the calvary to make a huge ordeal about it. I doubt the Asians or Mexicans would, either. What Cook said makes perfect sense. I would rather see my tax dollars go towards the sterilization/birth control of the welfare/unfit parent group, then to supporting their lack of wanting to work. Don't get me wrong, the individuals that have physical disabilities are entitled to their welfare/medicaid. But those who choose not to work, should not be able to collect extra money for bringing more individuals into the already welfared household.

As for the NAACP i am sorry as a black man that organization is a joke to the black community. First of all the NAACP needs to focus on:

-Why African Americans in Charleston County dropout of school and make up half of the dicipline problems in the schools???

-Why HIV and AIDS rate is high in the African American Community???

-Why African American men make up the prison system in South Carolina???

These are the problems they should be looking at and others in the black community instead of whinning about Nancy Cook who was actually telling the truth about the single parent. Also did not even talk about race at all.

allwoman, I had a rather embarrassing situation a few years ago regarding the EBT card. I was in line at the grocery store and the lady ahead of me used one of these cards to pay for her groceries. I thought that it was some sort of store issued "reward" card and asked the clerk how I could get one. She said "do you have a job?" I said "of course I do." She said "then you can't get one." Then I realized what it was. I guess I should have realized all along when she paid cash for certain items and used the card for the rest.

And now your mother and myself have to have a lawyer to help us and there goes part of our disability...once we get it. It's just not right.

And when I first moved down here 6 years ago, I had a job, which paid very little...but it was a job. I could just about pay my rent. I also didn't have any insurance. When I went to the DSS office, I was able to qualify for food stamps (which I gladly gave up when my financial situation improved, not quite a year later). When I inquired about any kind of insurance help, the lady asked me if I had small children, which I do not. She said the only way I would qualify for any medical insurance help was if I had small children. How do you like them apples?? Now we know why these women are pumping out child after child...it's the only way they can get medical insurance, while others, who really need it, and don't have a bunch of kids, can't.

It just bites.

I also concur with her position that we need to come to a point of stronger cultural, parental, political and educational confrontation with irresponsible teenagers whose selfish and immature actions impact our culture at large and our smaller communities in specific. I concur that Darby, Scott and Ford need to listen to Ms. Cooks words very carefully; from their comments it appears thay have failed to do so at this point in time. I would also suggest that it is SCOTT, DARBY and FORD who need to attend sensitivity and diversity training. Before you call me a racist know this although I am white, I now have a Chinese wife a black son inlaw and a Hispanic daughter inlaw and 6 mixes grandkids I love them all. So with all that I say stop with the feelings and look at facts. If a person is so irresponsible that they can not take care of there kids then the state should take them and find other that will take care of them and love them. As for the irresponsible parent he or she what ever color they are should not put them selves in a place were more kids are made. I have a friend that was like that and after 4 kids the state offered her the option and yes we the tax payer would pay. She took the sterilization and all is better, is it for everyone maybe not but my be it should be a choice. The tax payer wins and there is no more unwanted kids or abortions. As for the naacp that racist group should be out lawed as should the KKK or any group that can't see people as people and not there skin color first. Here in California were I live we take a person by there word and character not there skin color.

ey: I only used the word "Colored" because it's the NAACP that's making the accusations -- or am I mistaken about what the 'C' stands for?

Ms. Cook didn't make this an issue of race -- the NAACP did. Making every issue about race is the only way they can remain relevant in this century. They can say this is in the matter of 'equity', but let's not kid ourselves. If they weren't inventing some racial angle on this, they wouldn't be getting involved. 'Equity' is a smokescreen, and a thin one at that.

I think Ms. Cook, took it a little far, and I think ey has it pegged in identifying frustration as the root cause. That said, there is an undeniable common sense in her remarks that parallels that of similar remarks that many "frustrated" people have been making for years. Ms. Cook's real error was making such a comment in public where the politically-correct newspeak police could hear her thoughtcrime and fight to make her an unperson.

As I said, it wasn't racial until the NAACP got involved. It wasn't about eugenics until posters here got involved. We're not talking about selective breeding or genetic engineering. It's not a brave new world we're discussing. It's the common sense principle of not having kids you cannot afford. Several generations of "Great Society" welfare babies later, it's increasingly apparent that it is only common sense among people making their own living. The decision to reproduce needs to be taken from those not responsible for the consequences of their actions. It doesn't have to be the ridiculously exaggerated nightmarish notions presented by those who want to undermine common sense and truth. It can be as simple as norplanting women when they get their checks. No one is forcing anything on anyone. No one puts a gun to anyone's head and forces them to get a welfare check. Getting welfare is a CHOICE, just like the behaviors that lead to children.

If that plan doesn't appeal to you, here's a better one: GET RID OF WELFARE ALTOGETHER. Reagan aptly said "The best social program is a JOB". Problem solved.

"The NAACP became involved in this issue because it's one of equity, said the Rev. Joe Darby, vice president of the Charleston branch. People sometimes erroneously think that the NAACP is involved in matters tied only to black people, he said."

So the thing that gets me with this statement is simple what does the name NAACP stand for? I am still waiting for the federal government to allow for the National Association for the Advancement of Caucasian People (which will never happen because that would be racial). If the NAACP really wanted to make a statement, then the first thing would be to change your name to the National Association for Advancement of Minority People. Then I will start believing you are totally for all minorities.

Now the the issue of the comment:
Again like so many comments made on this issue is that most of the constitutes of Charleston County are tired of having to take care of someone else's problem. When through the history of our society that someone can have multiple babies and think that is perfectly okay because they will get an additional welfare check. Well enough is enough. It is time for some the members of our local / state and federal government to stop the abuse of the public assistance service.

I certainly do not want to defame the NAACP. They have paved the way for many. I believe that Dot Scott's actions towards Ms.Cook's statements are extremely hypocritical especially when she blatantly called a group of African American preschoolers from a downtown church's day school dirty and used a considerable amount of profanity in front of them during the Dec 2007 Christmas Parade. The actions of the local president on that day does not represent the mission statement for this historical organization that stands for "peaceful protests", nonviolence, justice, and harmony. Many of the parents complained about Ms Scott's actions to the NAACP but nothing was ever done. She continues to counterattack others but she is often not called down for her inappropriate behaviors. This is a good time for her to called down especially when Ms Cook did not personally attack children from our community. During Ms Scott's inappropriate behavior during the Christmas parade, she even invited one of the parents to fight with her. Impressively, our parents and teachers along with the children quickly jumped off of the float and proceeded to their vehicles without taking on the local president's invitation to fight her. The parents and faculty, but most importantly the children, of the Day School should be given a formal apology by the president. Ms. Scott may benefit from attending an anger management program. With many of our youth falling prey to violence and rage, we certainly do not want a local role model to continue such behavior and send the message that anger and aggression is always the answer.Violence can only be concealed by a lie, and the lie can only be maintained by violence.~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

opinionated1: procreation IS an inalienable right. Neither you nor your government has the RIGHT to tell me what to do with my reproductive organs. If I choose to have dozens of children it is MY RIGHT!!! What ISN'T my right is to have the taxpayers support the dozens of children I have. I DON'T have the right to tax $ given by hard working Americans. I DON'T have the right to expect others to absolve me of my responsibilities, have a right to free medical care, food stamps, welfare checks or subsidized housing.

You folk out there advocating forced sterilization or contraception need to think long and hard before allowing the government to have free reign over it's citizens' personal liberties. None of you want to go down that road.

No one is talking about these polygamy compounds spread throughout the US. I'm not just talking about the one that was recently raided in Texas. It is common knowledge that the primary source of funding for health care, food and $ is the welfare system. When these men 'marry' multiple women, they do so 'spiritually' not legally. Then these women go to the local Social Services offices & apply for food stamps, welfare and other public benefits as single women with children. DO THE RESEARCH! It is not just a local or minority issue. People hesitate to talk about because these people are doing it in the name of religion & they do not look like the typical welfare queens. But if one man has anywhere between 2 to 7 wives and they all have multiple children & the women don't work who pays for these people to eat? Granted some of these compounds have some money-making ventures but for the most part they rely on the government to support their lifestyle, all in the name of religion.

How about the prevalence of unwed motherhood and dependence on govt. assistance in the Blue Ridge Mountain/Appalachian areas in TN, NC, GA and KY? Again, not the typical welfare queens you see on our local tv stations but leeches nonetheless.

This presumption of a right to suckle on the teat of the govt has become pandemic in our nation & our society. It has to stop! Instead of concentrating on the perception of what a WELFARE QUEEN looks like, how about we instead concentrate on how as tax-paying, law abiding voters get people in office who aren't concerned with being PC and more concerned for what's best for this nation. We are going broke with all of our domestic social programs and flawed foreign policies. It's time for a change, but not one that sounds good in a 30 second sound bite during an election year. Instead of complaining we really need to stand up and protest the current state of our union. Instead of whining we should support candidates that AREN'T afraid to speak the truth about our societal ills and are willing to step up to the plate and offer REAL solutions not just paying lip service to the Ridiculous Left Wing Liberals or the Ultra Right Wing Bible Thumpers.

ey - Once again - it wasn't the posters here that brought race into this discussion. It was the NAACP. Last I checked, it wasn't the National Association for the Advancement of ALL People.

No one here disputes that there are people on welfare besides this "Welfare Queen" you speak of. Last I checked, Ms. Cook never made any such comment and never indicated any particular race. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks that this should be applied to one color of welfare recipient over another. You seem to be a lot more hung up on what a "welfare queen" looks like than any of the other posters here. Most people who want to stem the tide of welfare generations don't care what the color is of the person stealing money out of their wallet. I sure don't. I just want it to stop.

It's not about taking civil liberties. It's not about taking control of another's reproductive organs. No one is FORCING THEM TO DRAW A CHECK! That's their CHOICE. I think that, since self control is obviously lacking among those that benefit from a system that rewards poor choices, that self control needs to be made a condition of accepting the benefit. It's not forcing, because they can always still go get a JOB instead. I can think of at least two exceptions however. I remember a story recently where a child was born addicted to crack. Anyone willing to do THAT to a child has no right having them, and I'll be d@mned if I accept without protest the fact that my tax dollars probably paid for the crack that poisoned that child. Another case would be the more recent one where a woman (white, mind you, so don't bother with a racial angle) lost a third child under mysterious and likely abusive circumstances. She should have lost the right to reproduce before a third innocent child was buried.

You claim that you want to see someone step up who is not concerned with being PC and wants to address some of the nation's problems. I think that's exactly what Ms. Cook did. You'll be hard pressed to find someone not afraid to speak the truth, however. Look what happened to this one!

implanted: I wasn't so much focusing on race as I was on region. So many think it's just an inner city issue or just a Charleston issue. It is everywhere be it suburban, rural or urban. The faces and names are different but the underlying issues are the same.

And you are absolutely right about who brought race into this issue. If you read my earlier posts, you would see that I certainly empathized with Ms. Cook and completely disagreed with the NAACP, especially Mr. Darby, Mr. Ford and Ms. Scott. They've (as usual) hijacked a very important issue and made a mockery of it by crying 'racism'.

If you also re-read the 1st paragraph of my 10:35 posts, I state that as human beings we have certain inalienable rights regarding our person, but we DO NOT have the right to expect others to take responsibility of the consequences. It is unfair to advocate the revocation of the rights of others and not have those same rights taken from us. (I'm not referring to those who break the law however it is not unlawful to have multiple children)

I understand and share in your frustration of those who are reckless and irresponsible. However as a Libertarian I cannot and will not be hypocritical and take liberties from others just because I deem them unworthy of them because anyone could say the same about me for any number of reasons.

I don't claim anything implantedyankee. I stand by what I write on these posts as being my true beliefs and opinions. If you've taken the time to read my earlier posts you would see that I stand by Ms. Cooks right to her opinion, though I didn't think it was wise to advocate sterilization, especially knowing it will never happen. But it was her opinion and it was born out of a frustration shared by me and countless other law-abiding taxpayers who are tired of supporting those who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions.

Just as I am being vilified for what I'm saying (here on this board or in my office), so will others who also stand by their convictions and are strong enough to say what is truly on their minds. Just because I may not agree with someone does not mean that I will not respect them or fight for their right to say it and that includes Ms. Cook. If more people were willing to take the heat for their true convictions like Ms. Cook, perhaps change could happen.

To be clear, I agree with everyone who says that if a young woman or man comes to the government for assistance some parameters must be met. Contraception and/or sterilization should be an option if the parent wants the government to support them and their children. As well as finishing high school/GED, job training and most especially drug testing.

That way it becomes a CHOICE like any other. Just as I have to follow certain guidelines in order to get paid, so should anyone with their hand out for my tax dollars.

What I'm against is forced sterilization/contraception.

I know that this is a serious topic, but I kind of like adding humor to it too.

Some people work from home.
Some people are stay at home moms and dads.

eyfigueroa (anonymous) says...

I said to myself, heck yeah it still counts! lololol

I'll let one of you ladies be number 300!

To be fair, the subject of this article is an important one. If for no other reason than we need to take a long hard look at ourselves as a society and decide just how much foolishness we're going to take. And also, we shouldn't be afraid to not only speak the truth, but listen to the truth.

At least that's what myself told me today.

Good Nite!

ChasCarolinaGirl (anonymous) says...

LOL! Allwomen and EY ... Couldn't have done it w/out y'all!!

Narnie: You are too late in asking that question. Allwoman and I already debated this yesterday. Its not accomplishing anything ... it is the ability to freely voice your opinion.

If you wanted to accomplish anything ... This is not the way to do it. Duh!

Its been fun! lol

She's a closet racist IF the comments were directed only at the African-American population base in the Lowcountry.

IF not, the comment was not a wise choice of words.

Nazi Germany sought to sterilize the unfit, mentally challenged, disabled, and others based solely on their ethnicity.

So is she a racist or worse?

Secondarily, would her Catholic Pontiff approve of her comments or would she be excommunicated?
