Rally a hunt for clues and oyster roast

When I first learned about a road rally coming to this area, a reminder of my first road rallye in Europe came to mind. After assignment to Germany, I was invited to participate in a rallye driving an Opel car.

My first question was, 'Is this a race?' After no deliberation, the answer came: 'No, we don't race through German villages.' I asked, 'How do you know who wins?' The firm reply: 'The driver who crosses the finish line first!'

Well, the road rally on April 19, which starts in Mount Pleasant and ends at the Charleston Visitors Center Bus Shed, is not a race, we have been assured. The rally involves a five-step scavenger hunt with clues given to assist participants.

'Ready to Rally!' will start in the parking lot of the former Family Dollar store at 739-753 Coleman Blvd. in Mount Pleasant (one block from GDC and Mike's Bikes) and finish downtown at the Bus Shed.

The rally is open to all types of licensed drivers and street-legal vehicles. When the cars reach the finish line, each driver will return to the Bus Shed, and the winner will be announced and awards presented, followed by an oyster roast.

'We are confident this event will not only be a lot of fun, but will be successful in raising funds for the growth of our programs, outreach and scholarships,' says Louisa Shingler, event chairwoman and board member of the Life Management Center in Charleston, which is sponsoring the event. 'We encourage car enthusiasts, oyster lovers and all members of the community to attend.'

The first prize is a set of new tires from Gerald's Tires, a bottle of wine from Ben Arnold Distributors and a trophy.

Other prizes will be awarded for oldest vehicle, sexiest vehicle and wackiest vehicle.

The Life Management Center promotes programs that focus on helping children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD. It is believed to be a neurobiological disorder that affects up to 8 percent of children, whose symptoms often continue into adolescence and adulthood.

ADHD is characterized by developmentally inappropriate impulsivity, inattention and, in some cases, hyperactivity. Although individuals with ADHD can be very successful in life, without appropriate identification and treatment, the condition can have serious consequences.

The cost of the event is $150 per vehicle, which includes the driver and one navigator. Additional people in the vehicle are $75 each. The fee includes the rally, oyster roast, live music and a silent auction.

To purchase tickets or become a sponsor, contact Life Management Center at 852-5705.
