Local truckers dispute rumor of planned work stoppage

Rumors of a widespread shutdown by independent truckers in the Charleston region and elsewhere around the country to protest fuel prices are just rumors, according to an official from a transportation organization.

Bill Campbell, head of the local Port Truckers Association, said he told members of his group not to participate in any shutdown today or later this week.

"When we participate in something, we want it to be 100 percent known that the whole nation is doing it and not just a certain area," he said.

Campbell said his group is planning a larger shutdown later this year to protest the inability of independent trucker to organize and negotiate diesel fuel surcharges.

Byron Miller, the State Ports Authority's director of public relations, said he hadn't seen any evidence of a shutdown, based on the amount of trucks that were entering the local port terminals.

According to news reports, truck drivers were staging protests today in areas of New Mexico, Tennessee and Illinois. In Pennsylvania, scores of truckers drove their rigs and blasted their horns around the state Capitol on Monday to protest rising fuel prices.
