3 charged after allegedly jumping off bridge

Two College of Charleston students and another woman were charged with disorderly conduct Saturday for allegedly jumping or attempting to jump off the U.S. Highway 17 bridge near the round Holiday Inn in Charleston and into the Ashley River, police said.

The three were detained after a passing motorist called 911 to report a female had jumped over the side of the north bridge, which carries traffic south out of the city on Savannah Highway.

Multiple police and rescue personnel responded to the call, including boats from the Coast Guard and Charleston Police.

"They were jumping off the bridge for fun and laughs," Charleston Police Lt. D. Middleton said.

All three were issued citations that carry a fine of $247.

Cited were Kate E. Hedley, 20, of Spring Street; Amy E. Godbey, 18, of Mauldin; and Michael Meyer, 18, of Cincinnati, according to a responding police officer.

A cost estimate of the brief, 20-minute rescue was not immediately available.

I used to do that for fun too. I think a new sign should be posted on the bridge. "Anyone jumping off bridge is subject to the consequences of your actions...YOU WILL NOT BE RESCUED...so we hope you are a good swimmer...Good Luck!" That would probably curb a few people from jumping off bridges. Not $247.00 fine, had i only known it was so cheap................................

Which is it? Did they jump, or did they just stop in midair?

Jumping off bridges is fun!!! My friends and I jumped off a lot of bridges when we were kids in FL.

The fines should be used to install a diving board on the bridge and a prize for the most creative dive observed. Plus a ladder to make it easier to get back up again!

Interesting to see how the kids are making fun of this. Apparently they are part of the changing times. What would have happened if one of the jumpers jumped and didn't come back up? Their parents and friends would be holloring in-justice and try to sue the highway department for not signing properly and the City of Charleston for not posting life guards. Kids today, just don't give a damn. At least the rescue personnel did and we got to foot the bill. Thank you College of Charleston for another slap in the face.

I was young once and would have done something like this, except I would have picked a less hostile playground - I went swimming, once, in Breach Inlet in the middle of the night while slightly impaired.

If they are that stupid, we should play stupid to and not rescue them or even worry about them for that fact, hell let them drown, that would be 3 less IDIOTS in the world!!!!!
