Real estate channel aims to be fresh tool for buyers

Potential home buyers will soon be able to click the remote control — not just the computer mouse — to find their dream home.

The Charleston Trident Association of Realtors is launching a promotional television channel on Comcast's local cable system that will show listings of homes for sale in the region. The channel is expected to launch in mid- November, said Bill Watson, Comcast Corp.'s general manager.

David Kent, association president, said the exposure will complement advertisements that already appear online and in newspapers and other publications.

"It's a great opportunity to bring real estate to the TV market," Kent said. "That's what it's all about — getting the property out to any form of media that we can."

The channel will feature three types of programs: 30-second commercials, 30-minute programs and individual listings that will appear on the screen for 15 seconds.

The fees for each have not been set yet.

Agents must belong to the association to post ads on the channel, Kent said.

The channel will be available to subscribers to Comcast's preferred basic package and premium cable offerings.

The specific channel number has not been determined, but Watson said it likely will be near the Home and Garden Television network, which attracts viewers who are likely to be interested in real estate.

"The people that migrate to that programming are looking for ideas on the home, and what better company to have than a real estate channel where you can find a nice home in the area?" Watson said.

The new channel is being launched as residential real estate sales are slowing locally and nationally.
