Motorcyclist dies after 33-foot fall

North Charleston's Major Coyle Kinard consoles the husband of the woman killed Tuesday afternoon in a motorcycle accident.
A woman riding a new Kawasaki motorcycle hit a North Charleston on-ramp retaining wall and fell 33 feet to her death Tuesday evening.
The woman's husband, who was riding ahead of her, apparently didn't witness the 6:18 p.m. accident but arrived at her side shortly after he noticed her Ninja motorcycle resting against the wall, authorities said.
Charleston County Coroner Rae Wooten identified the woman as Marque Thompson, 40, of Mount Pleasant.
Thompson and her husband, who was riding a Kawasaki Vulcan, had gotten off Interstate 26 east at Exit 212C, police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.
They made the loop to get on Interstate 526 east. It wasn't known Tuesday night what made the woman's motorcycle hit the left wall, but no other vehicles were involved in the accident, Pryor said.
Thompson fell to a grassy area between the I-526 east on-ramp and I-526 west. She was wearing a helmet.
The Vulcan was still bearing a paper tag. Wooten said both motorcycles were new, but she didn't know if Thompson was an experienced rider.

The DMV should mandate a motorcycle safety course for anyone driving a motorcycle if you've got the $$ the dealer would put anyone on a motrcycle it's sad maybe this was not the case with this women and I will grieve for her husband what a tragedy

I'm against mandatory helmet laws but i do agree that there should be motorcycle safety courses required before getting licensed, just as i believe the same should be for automobile drivers.

If helmets aren't mandatory for people over a certain age, why are seat belts? Just a question. I always wear my seat belt and make anyone riding in my car wear one as well. Why can you get a ticket for being 40 and not wearing a seat belt, but just ride by cpos without a helmet?? Dumb.

This is truly sad.
I suppose we can attribute a sizeable portion of cause in this accident to the poorly designed and built interstate entrance and exit ramps that are too steep, too sharp, and too short allowing for no margin of error at all.
Thanks again SCDOT.

If this is the same couple, my secretary saw them moments before in the Sam's Club parking lot. The husband was teaching the woman to drive the bike. She even rear ended him once and he got pissed off. Very sad story.

My heart goes out to all the family. This is a tragic loss. One of my friends went down while we were riding Saturday, but luckily, he only shattered everything in his knee. Lets not point blame at anyone, just show sympathy to the family of these fallen bikers.....

To flyboy68 - Give me a break! Do you really believe that this woman who was obviously just learning to ride a brand new motorcycle was drinking budweiser and riding to the Kickin' Horse? It's narrow-minded people like you who are too caught up in your own little world - driving with blinders on - that usually CAUSE bike-related accidents.
I have had my bike for over 6 years (two minor accidents) and ALWAYS do everything I can to avoid interstates and major highways. Helmets do nothing to protect you from falling 33 feet to your death...or from being run down by an idiot who assumes I've been drinking and am on my way to a bar.

As a female rider, and soccer mom with a full time career, I can assure everyone that the majority of motorcycles riders are not alcoholics, drug attics, and derilicks. But responsible involved members of the community who enjoy riding. It is absolutely absurd to be a beginner rider on the interstate. Roads, motorcycle dealers, or others cannot accept the blame for one's own stupidity. While I greive for the family they (the husband and wife) put themselves in a very dangerous position if they are truly that inexperience. Even though I rode off road motorcycles the majority of my life a street bike is a much different animal. I spent long hours on back roads mastering my motorcycle (which is appropriately sized) and past my road test at the DMV way back when the test was difficult. Please keep your eyes on the road while driving, motorcycles are everywhere. Look twice the next time you see a pretty motorcycle, you may see your child's teacher, a preacher, a fireman, or the team mom riding.

Wait guys, lets take a deep breath. Whether this young lady was inexperience or not should'nt be a debate. Beleive me those Jersey barriers are design to keep motorist (cars/trucks/motorcycles) from going over the edge. Check the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) book, however why is it have to be at RACE when this lady lost her life to an accident. Why can't we just see it as it is. I am sick out it. Stop!!!! Let's talk about how to encourage inexperience bikers to enroll in a course, or give some type of compassion.
Come on guys, we're better than that...... I think.

Myview...thanks for the view, I myself am also a lady rider. I practiced for months before getting on any main highway.
Interstate is dangerous when you are in a car....it is definately alot worse when you are on 2 wheels.
This family is in my thoughts.

jagrios my condolences to you and your family
if what I heard is right she didn't even have a motorcycle permit, both bikes are brand new and she didn't have any experience riding yet
if this is true and that was my sister jag I'd have that husband up on charges
I'm getting angry sitting here thinking about what a waste of a good life, I had a feeling she had kids
I've thought about this all day long, I ride too and have nearly all my life, I even passed the site where it happened on the way home today
I'm really really sorry for you loss jag... and I'm really really pissed that her husband condoned her to even ride that motorcycle
but it's too late now to pass judgment and those kids don't need to lose both parents but I sure hope this is an eye opener for others
there should be a law passed that would require you to take several safety courses before the purchase of a motorcycle, there is no room for error like in a car
I saw where two people said "at least she was wearing a helmet" ... wtf did that have to do with anything? is she any less dead???
pleeeeeaaaaasssse be careful out there people, even after years of riding I still train and others should too... it's deadly serious sport and people take it too lightly
find some friends to help train you too, don't get out there if your not comfortable on a bike and definitely don't get on the interstate
and flyboy, as usual you crack me up...

My condolences to the family. The death of this woman should be further investigated, The husband knew excatly what he was doing when let his wife ride such a powerful motorcycle, knowing that she was not an experienced rider.
He might think he committed the perfect crime, but justice will prevail in this case. Jagrios do not give up looking into your sister death and may she rest in peace

I'd like to express my condolences as well. Please see that her children do not read the comments on this page, if at all possible. This is the last thing they need right now. What they need to hear is how very sorry everyone is for their loss.

I am a MSF RiderCoach and this is a classic motorcycle fatality. Inexperienced rider that goes out and buys a high end cc sportbike as their first bike. If it was a new bike, then her tires were probably brand new and had not been broken in. I don't take corners fast or go past 65 mph for at least 100 miles when I break a new tire in. That new tire is slick as hell!! 40% of all motorcycle fatalites happen in the corner. Also she falls within the stats that points to most motorcycle fatalities today is by riders 40+.
I too blame the husband for this. It sounds like he was the experienced rider so she should have been in a car while he rode the bike home then they should have signed her up for an MSF class. If its true that he was in the parking lot teaching her how to ride a Kawasaki Ninja sportbike before they got on I-26, then this is almost criminal! Folks, please, please, do not even think about getting a motorcycle until you have taken an MSF Rider Course!! This is a fatality that could have been avoided! Mercy!

Just can't see Margue riding a motorcycle. I feel so bad for the kids.
Considering they bought my house in Charlotte stopped making payments on the first packed up and left the place a shambles and stiffed me on the second mortgage and still owe me around $60,000.00. Where did they get the cash to buy a couple of new motorcycles?
Well what I can I say? "What comes around goes around"?

ahemmm what Motoryacht???? what comes around goes around???
a mother of three died from an accident and all you have to say is too bad so sad because they stiffed you?? you are kidding me right??
I guess you think your profit is more important than this ladies life
we'll see if what comes around goes around, when we all laugh at the next news article that says Motoryacht was paralyzed in a yacht accident and has to be spoon fed by a trained baboon that craps all over him six times a day
and how did you happen on this article if you're in Charlotte? or did they just happen to come where you live now, here?
what a dip...

It made the news in Charlotte and I'm like WTF! Marque on a sport bike that's crazy. Profit? lol what profit? This lady and her husband slithered out of Charlotte and destroyed a house some other family would have loved.
Dip huh? Well I'll tell you I jumped through fire to sell them the house and came out of pocket to help them move in.
Profit? lol what profit? This lady and her husband slithered out of Charlotte, ran back to SC after they destroyed a house some other family would have loved to own.
Too bad they had Dom taste on Bud budget.
You know big hat no cattle?
So maybe flyboy knows something after all?
And why would someone knowing they owe a bunch of money and the sheriff is look for them buy a couple of new bikes? This is just really odd!

My Uncle is in a wheelchair due to a motorcycle accident.
EVEN IF YOU ARE THE BEST MOTORCYCLE RIDER IN THE WORLD; ALL IT TAKES IS SOMEONE TALKING ON THEIR CELL PHONE, OR JUST NOT PAYING ATTENTION, TO RUIN OR END YOUR LIFE.
There are few chances with a motorcycle.
I would make sure your Will is updated if you decide to ride in Charleston on a motorcycle.

No one with any common sense would ride a sport bike on I-526 at 6PM on a week day. If you knew Marque Thompson you would think the same.
Only a knowledgeable rider who knows how to lay a bike down, in great shape would play in the I-26 traffic at anytime.
Something is really wrong with this.
or many it's just natural selection at work?

Motoryahoo my only debate with you is you slamming a dead woman in public for her family to see for no apparent reason other than she/they owe you money
we all know she shouldn't have been on that bike where she was and that something is up with this... either he's a really stupid husband or he was hoping for something bad to happen to her, and she was obviously too paranoid to realize that what she was trying to do would bring her to her own end
and then you see a pic of him in the paper being consoled by conyard ... he should have either been in the grass with her or following the transfer, not standing around talking on the side of the highway
there's some good marsh here that even an airboat can't reach for people like this
those poor kids will be in my prayers, as will the family traveling

MotoryachtSoCo you are right. why would you be on a bike at 6PM on a week day, not to mention I-26.
That really sucks that they would leave you high and dry since you went out of your way to help them get into a house.I mean come on!

So hard to figure. P&C facts may be all wrong... but the bike was "resting against the wall"? You ever see a bike that hit a wall just stay there? Resting?
She had no business riding a bike any bike ever! But what a freak accident... hit the wall at no doubt a slow speed and over the wall she goes? Marque was not a slight women either... at least not that I remember I'd put her at 140 or better.
As far a laying down a bike I so know what you mean... rear brakes are good for that ....
However I laid down a Honda 550 hummm back in 19 hundred and 70??? I can't say if it was luck or skill but it kept me from going over the hood of a Town and Country Ford Station wagon (it was the family mini van of the day) that had suddenly backed out into the street I was riding down. The bike slid up under the car and I walked away though not far with a broken collar bone.
And no I didn't have to be spoon fed by a trained baboon that craped all over me six times a day.... it was only five times a day.
Were there no witnesses?
Wonder what the husband did afterwards? ride on home on his bike?
Posted by jammer on September 12, 2007 at 10:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)
why be on a bike on I26 at 6pm?? many are without a hitch
I've been on mine that time of day on 26 more times than I could possibly remember over the years, thousands of times I'm sure
I've been on mine crossing the Throgs neck bridge in NYC that time of day... and many other busy cities in this country
that had nothing to do with it, except she personally wasn't ready for that
Posted by MotoryachtSoCo on September 12, 2007 at 10:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Oh well.... it's clear to me they had their way of treating people.
They needed the money to buy motorcycles and other toys I'm sure and it didn't matter at who's expense it came.
They took me for a ride and sadly though I'm out the cash, their greed gave them nothing but a tragic turn of events.
But everyone should understand a motorcycle is not something you just climb on and learn how to ride in a parking lot. Learn from this people learn so you don't have to repet these same mistakes.

whoever said she owed them money is absolutley crazy. If anyone owed money it was him, the person who sold them the house over charged them, it wasn't even worth the amount they needed. when they refinanced it and got cash out, the owner got the cash!!!!!!!! he was completely paid off and then some. He knew they had to leave town because the husband lost his job. I can't believe people would lie and defile a person on their death. Shame on you!!! Karma bs, i do hope you get your karma for your writing things for a family to read after this tragic loss. I am her mother and I really don't appreciate your thoughtlessness and total disrespect for someones, mother, sister and daughter!!!!!

Paid off? rolflmao!
Check the tax records in Charlotte, and then swing by the court house and have a look at the uncleared judgements.
They couldn't make the house payment but could run back to Charleston and buy some motorcycles and Lord only knows what else and look what happened.
The mircle of natural selection at work!
Hey now that I know were they moved to maybe I can collect?
Yeah Right!
Momma you were not done rasing your baby, and for that I'm very for your loss.

I have stumbled upon this forum and would like to add my condolences to the grieving family.
The loss of their loved one, and the anguish that they feel should not fairly judged by anyone who is not personally involved. This little family is shattered and is suffering.
For better or worse this forum allows even the dull, and cruel the opportunity to express themselves. Some have made this unfortunate, and untimely death about them. It's not about them. It's about three children who are motherless, a husband who has to live with his decision making, a sister and mother's precious loss, and a life lost.
I am not located in your state, and wonder if any of you locals who have so passionately written your opinions about the possibility of criminal behavior in this unhappy situation, truly feel that your police should look more closely at this incident. If so, contact them and speak out for this poor woman, as she now has no voice of her own.
It is just possible that wrong doing by motorcycle sales companies, laws concerning motorcycle safety programs, or even spousal responsibilities, could be changed by your actions. Do it today.
God bless this family, and give them peace.

You have a very good point. This is not a tragic accident it's a stupid accident. Maybe some good can come out of this.
I do feel for the kids having known the Thompson's for more than five years it's hard to not feel for the innocent lives. I remember little Brian and his wonderful red hair.... such a cute kid.
But what can you do for the children when their parents are morons?
These two idiots have been making stupid choices all of their lives.
Just add this fatality in the stupid column with all the other marginal Americans who, drown, fall, blowup, electrocute, shoot, impale or otherwise end their lives because they lack the prerequisite brain cells to function in the real world.
I don't thing there's any foul play going on here the husband is not that smart. It's just Darwinisim.

MotoryachtSoCo,
Clearly you are in pain. You cruel remarks will not get you get the pound of flesh you desire. It only serves to identify you as someone without the tools to deal with issues maturely.
Even though you are aware that the family of the deceased may read your comments, you continue to lash out trying to hurt anyone in that suffering family that you can. Young Brian, who you spoke kindly of, could read your distasteful thoughts. Is that really your goal?
Consider the legal options available to you, or anyone injured in business matters. Lumping this family onto the trash heap does not serve you well.
You also may want to consider what part Darwinism played when you, (maybe not so wisely), picked the Thompsons to do business with. Do you consider yourself, "lacking the prerequisite brain cells to function in the real world of business. Probably not. Misfortune can befall any of us at any time. Bad judgment dose not make someone worthless.
I don't know you, nor do I know them, but I think in this case, compassion for a life lost and a family in mourning,
would serve you better than the malicious attacks I'm reading from your posts.
Please stop it.
Posted by MotoryachtSoCo on September 13, 2007 at 2:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)
No pain here just a simple portrait of the facts.
I have in many cases, as with the Thompson's been a poor judge of character. Assuming everyone deserves a second chance, that people make mistakes and that all of mankind is good and well meaning. What was I thinking? I surely lack some brain cells.
I was wrong and the death of Marque Thompson proves beyond any doubt..... stupid is as stupid does. Life is full of strange and unexplained events and this one tops it all....
These two idiots screwed themselves. I don't need the money but had they made an effort to repay what they owed instead of sneaking out of town under the cover of darkness... then I could have given other people the same chance they had. To have a home for their children and a safe place to play and grow up but these two ding dongs had to spend their money on a couple of motorcycles and look where it got one of them.
Had they suffered through some hard times and couldn't pay then so be it... but to spend in excess on things of material want.... and to lie that they could barley feed the children.... hummmm
Deuteronomy 32:35 'Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, In due time their foot will slip; For the day of their calamity is near, And the impending things are hastening upon them.'
Nuff Said?

I've been reading postings on Charleston.net for a little while now, but haven't felt compelled to respond until reading the ones pertaining to this article.
First of all, my sincerest condolences go out to this ladies' family.
My husband and I recently decided to get dirt bikes (he's ridden motorcycles since I've known him, albeit the "crotch rocket" had to go before the idea of nuptials could even be entertained), however, I had never, in my life, been on any type of motorcycle other than as a passenger on a Harley a few times (I’m 38!). Let me tell you, he wouldn't let me get anything larger than a 150cc, even though the 250 sounded sooooo much better, and he wouldn't let me out of our driveway until I practiced starting, stopping, and turning, and HE felt comfortable with how I handled the bike, so it was a couple of days before I actually got to feel some dirt! And even though I was raring to go, he had to bring me back to reality and remind me that I didn’t have a clue as to what I was getting in to, and I hate to say this, but he was right! Granted, yes, a dirt bike is ALOT different than a sport bike, but my point is this, everything takes time and to think, if the reports are correct, of this poor woman just learning how to ride that bike, and getting on the Mark Clark, making that sharp turn on that exit ramp, and then getting into trouble like that is just too scary to think about when I recall how unsure I was about myself once I sat on mine and cranked her up. I thought I could just hit the Wambaw Cycle trail and go crazy…boy, was I wrong!
And IF I ever do decide to explore the possibility of getting a sport bike, I will definitely heed the advice of burton and take a riding course.
Please stay safe everyone!

I still fell that the police needs to further investigate this traggic death. The children is what we need to be concerned with at this point and the fact that they are with their father, What will he do next?? Buy the children a motorcycle??

I would suspect that their father is probably wondering how he is going to live the rest of his life without his wife and mother of his children, who are old enough to read these postings, which means they had been married for some time, as well as with the choice he made to let her ride without experience. But we have to remember...she was an adult and did make her OWN choice. Accidents do happen.

I'm the last person to claim to be Christ like and in no way would I infer that I'm a "Christian" do gooder.
But Deuteronomy 32:35 'Vengeance in mine' that would be God speaking.... is the basis of my understanding of life ie .... it's not up to me.
As far as legal action... why? This is way more fun than any legal action I get very little enjoyment of paying lawyers.
As far as the childern reading all of this BS.... I doubt it.
Just strikes me as odd that this happened considering what I know about these people. If you had ever met Marque you to would figure her to be the last person to ride a sport bike.... it wasn't in her skill set to drive a mini van mow the lawn or even ride a bicycle!
This is case of Dumb and Dumber.... this is dirt for one of the tabloid shows I'm still in shock.

MotoryachtSoCo-mpletely heartless...I didn't say the children were reading this, I was quoting what her sister had mentioned in her initial posting. So, I left off the quotation marks...sue me...oh, I forgot, you "get very little enjoyment of paying lawyers." I was merely reiterating the fact that they are old enough to read them, which is indicative of how long their parents were together. I would hope that they would not read them due to the harshness of some of the comments being made about their parents, one of whom they will never see again. It must be nice to be you and so perfect!

You have to consider those poor children left with a man that contributed to his wife's death. I feel sorry for the victim who lost her life and the children, but hope that life will be hell for him from now on, cause deep in his heart he knows what has done.
