Co-defendant of ex-treasurer Ravenel free on $25,000 bail

COLUMBIA — One of former state Treasurer Thomas Ravenel's co-defendants in a federal cocaine case entered into a plea agreement Wednesday with federal authorities.

Michael Miller, who also goes by Hashmere and Hash and was previously described as a self-employed deejay, agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine. Each count carries up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1 million, although the agreement indicates authorities would advocate that Miller receive a lighter sentence.

An additional seven cocaine distribution

charges against Miller, 25, of Mount Pleasant, were dropped as part of the agreement.

Neither Miller nor his public defender Langdon Long could immediately be reached for comment.

Miller's next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 13 in Columbia.

The case involving Ravenel, 45, and Miller became public in June when the men were indicted by a federal grand jury on cocaine charges. Authorities have said Miller sold Ravenel the drugs.

Ravenel, who resigned in July, confessed in September as part of a negotiated deal to using cocaine sporadically over the past two years and sharing it with friends.

As part of the agreements, both Ravenel and Miller admitted to being involved in the distribution of less than 100 grams of cocaine, down from the original charges involving five times that amount.

Ravenel, a multimillionaire Charleston real estate developer, remains free on $100,000 unsecured bond. He faces a maximum 20 years in prison and $1 million fine. Prosecutors have agreed to recommend a reduced sentence. A date for his sentencing as not been set.

Miller is free on a $25,000 secured bond after spending months in the Charleston County Detention Center on a state drug trafficking charge that was later dropped.

A third co-defendant Pasquale Pellicoro, a Mount Pleasant wine merchant, remains at large after being indicted in September in the case. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

In a telephone interview on the day he was scheduled for arraignment, Pellicoro, an Italian citizen, told The Post and Courier he was in Switzerland.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William Witherspoon said Wednesday Pellicoro has not made contact with federal agents since the days after his indictment.

"They're still looking for him," Witherspoon said. "I am very hopeful that we will find Mr. Pellicoro and bring him to justice."

Why should any of these guys in this case deserve a reduced sentence? Is it because 2 of the defendents are rich!Again,a clear example of how our justice system treat the rich and the poor and black and whites differently when it comes to justice! What if all the defendents in this case were black, the results would've been more severe and totally different!

Shawnee I couldn't agree fast enough. While I was reading the story I wondered the same thing. And if Ravenel hadn't been involved this "dejay hash" would have got the book slammed at him but the state doesn't want to look bias in this one. They both should get the max sentence! Just like you or I would get...

With prosecutors and judges practicing discrimination in making their deals and sentencing, it's no wonder the black community is constantly crying "foul".

However, money has always greased the skids and even though we know this to be true, we cannot do anything to stop it.

We can protest and write letters/emails until the cows come home; money talks and BS walks. That's the way of the world. At least both will be doing some time.

1. Plea bargains happen all the time. You may not like it but it's a part of our justice system. You usually see it when there are a lot of charges. Probably, many of those charges wouldn't have held up in court so the prosecutor shaves off a few of the questionable ones & strikes a deal. Again, people may not like it but this approach reduces the already heavy court workload.

2. Regarding the discrimination issue (that normally accounts for the majority of comments on this forum), a black man gets the benefit of a plea bargain so in this case, I don't see it.

Mr. Ravenel should be sent to jail, no pleas and without any special treatment! Being the trusted Treasurer for the state of South Carolina, this man should be made an example of what happens when the narcotic laws are broken by trusted officals. If this was a police officer or state prosecutor who got caught, he would not receive such special treatment. Regardless of the quantity of drugs involved, this is a joke and the people of South Carolina should be in an uproar over this plea bargain.

I agree that had Ravenel not been involved in this case, Michael Miller would have received a more harsh sentence, but I don't think it has anything to do with race, this time it's economic prejudice. I'm sure no one wants comparisons between the two sentences and the ability to say the Ravenel got off easy.

As far as how light the sentences will most likely be... I think public officials should be held to higher standards than joe public and punishments for wrong doings should be tougher. We trust public officials with the well being of entire communities. They have to be held accountable.

Carolinagal,
Don't try to wrap yourself in the safety of "statistics show"' state you source...since you cleave to these statistics. If you think for one second that this is the very first and perhaps only criminal activity your ex-treasurer has ever been involved in, you are naive! In spite of that, I am sure he does not have a PREVIOUS RECORD. Bottom line is that if this had been ANYONE else, regardless to race [since that seems to be the only thing that brings excitement to like minds] and with or without a PREVIOUS RECORD, the case would have been handled much differently.

Regardless of WHO is involved, our justice system is in horrible shape. The prosecutors involved in most of these cases are taking pleas when they know they can convict. Why? Because they are worried about trying cases in front of juries. Think about that. Juries are full of people who don't listen to the facts, but are more concerned about how the accused looks, how they are dressed, how old they are, how much money they have, whether they're male/female, black/white...etc. Many jurors are like some of the posters on this site, they are only concerned about their own petty agendas and believe that their own perception of things is reality.

Pleas are a necessary evil when you've got a backlog of cases and violent criminals walking the streets awaiting their trials. I don't think there's so much a racial disparity as an economic one. The rich can afford the best lawyers who work the better plea deals. The poverty stricken blacks get slammed because they can't afford the lawyers, not becuase they're black. Poverty stricken whites get the same treatment. Money talks. I just wish people would quit listening.

...Most violent crime in our country is committed by blacks. According to U.S. Department of Justice statistics, blacks commit 54 percent of murders, 42 percent of forcible rapes, 59 percent of robberies and 38 percent of aggravated assaults. For the most part, the victims are black. Ninety-three percent of murdered blacks were murdered by a black

Just to follow up carolinagal's comments, statistics are what they are. Numbers can't be racist. Here's something to consider. There are blacks all over the world, but these crime statistics only exist at these levels in America. The violent crime among blacks elsewhere is nowhere near this level (and no, wars in Africa don't count). Also, its usually concentrated in certain areas. It's cultural, not racial. Kids growing up need good role models. There ARE good black role models in America, Dwight Howard, Denzell Washington, Tony Dungy, etc, but too many black kids "look up to" the wrong element. If your "heroes" are gansta rappers or professional athletes with long criminal records.......

CHRISJIII - None of the statistics carolinagal quoted were 100%. Yes, there are white scumbags, far too many of them. Here's something we all can agree on (I hope). There are way too many corrupt politicians because there are way too many apathetic Americans. We need dedicated, honest men and women as lawmakers, sheriffs, police chiefs and judges. All are elected or appointed by someone who's elected. If more people took election day seriously, a lot of the scumbag politicians (most of whom are white) would be out in street where they belong and we wouldn't even have to discuss corruption in the criminal justice system.

My Guess:

Ravenel - Probation; House Arrest, Large Fine

Miller - 5 years, Small Fine

Miller is going to get the short end of the stick and both sentences will probably be a joke.

I definitely agree with the posters who have stated that it's more about the money than race in this case, even though race usually plays a factor. This case has gotten a lot of publicity and is being watched for fairness. However, if you have the money, you can buy attorneys like Andy Savage who know how to wheel and deal.

On a different note, WHEN are we going to find out about all those great "citizens" who were indulging in the nose candy at TRAV's house? There's always a lot going on behind the scenes and as most of us can agree, you can't trust the judicial system.

The mythological higher "ethical and professional" standards that public officials are allegedly held to are rarely if ever factored into criminal sentencing.

Those standards usually come into play after a conviction to remove the licensure / professional standing of the one convicted -- as rumor has it -- to protect the public from further risk (excuse my raucously rude laughter).

I do believe and agree with those who feel that corrupt public officials should be sentenced to stiffer criminal penalties upon conviction. We do "trust public officials with the well being of entire communities" -- AND THAT TRUST HAS GOT TO COUNT FOR SOMETHING.

While Ravenel / Miller may be spilling the beans on others in their clique, I am smart enough not to hold my breath waiting on public disclosure of that Who's Who.

Most of the time media can be and is skewed... Unless u are directly involved with the situation you don't ever know what really happens. The media boosts things up just to keep the readers more interested. As you all may or may not know some innocent people are tricked into pleading guilty in some cases. Many innocent people have gone to jail, or been convicted for crimes they didn't commit, because of the ignorance of law officials. Serving years in prison for a crime someone else committed. People make mistakes. Think about that before you start name calling. Here's how I see this case...Miller could be rich (Heck he could've been one of the rich blacks Ravenelle hung with) for all we know, I mean it is pretty expensive to live in Mt.Pleasant, just because your black doesn't mean your poor. The way this situation is being handled could be based on pure money envolvement...For all you know Miller could be innocent?(I mean how many criminals do you see smiling in a mugshot), he just mixed with the wrong crowd, and this was his first offense he has no prior record, which is probably another leftout reason many of the federal charges were dropped. I don't believe he was directly involved. I believe they're mainly after Ravenele in this case, and now since miller's name was mixed up in this from the get go to satisfy the public they have to keep him tied up in it. How do you think his imediate family must feel about the whole situation. Going from no criminal record to something this big!...seems a little fishy to me. Let's dwell on that for a moment. And as far as Pelicoro goes, he's pretty much made it clear by the pure fact of him going M.I.A that he was involved.
