I'm glad they caught his ass. With him threatening the life of his ex-girlfriend, he would probably do the same thing to her as he did to these poor defenseless creatures. I don't think the charges are steep enough and people need to learn that you can't hurt anything or anyone and get away with it. I think they need to also charge the so called witness that gave the cats to him in the first place. What was that guy thinking? Sheesh.

Is the defense attorney just as sick as his client? What does he mean the bail is too high and the charges are uncharacteristic. The charges are exactly what they are, he deserves to sit behind bars until his trial. Anyone with common sense can look at the picture of this young man and see that he's obviously disturbed. If the courts don't deal with this young man now, he'll eventually become a serial killer.

Horrible crime. The boy needs some pyschiatric help. Boys do stupid stuff to animals - shoot them with BB guns, etc... but this far surpasses anything I've ever heard. You certainly cannot chalk it up to 'boys will be boys.'

Yeah, where is PETA? If this jack rabbit sent a threatening email to his ex-girl friend, I think what he did to the cats was a warning of what he was going to do to her.

Someone mentioned that he needed a psychiatric evaluation, I don't think so. If he get one of those, they will let him go from jail & he will do harm to someone else. Put his crazy butt away.

It's not that anyone is more concerned with animals, but any person who is capable of torturing an animal, that may not have rights but feels pain nonetheless, needs mental help now, not after he's done something similar to a human being.

Later, if he does do just that, this event will come out and everyone will be saying "why didn't they do something about him then, didn't they see the warning signs?"

Now, when there's a chance to stop that from happening, they won't take it.

As I said in my post yesterday, I seriously doubt that this is his first act of animal cruelty.
Threatening that girl's life shows that this kid is escalating in his sick pattern of behavior.
I wouldn't trust him around any weaker individuals whether they are animals or people.

Killing animals like this is almost always a sign of major future trouble. Its not just about these cats. It starts there and gets worse. He should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Legally, I can get an abortion if I choose to. Legally, companies can test on animals whether we like it or not. Some things that our laws allow us to do are not always seen as ethical and most people have very different opinions of how things should be. Is it right to have an abortion? I dont know, but I do know that its legal to do so. It is illegal to kill and/or torture animals and people. It starts with animals. Thats the whole thing everyone is saying. He needs to be punished fully now so he wont hurt anyone else ever again. Animals are close to most people hearts and so its a strong debate. I'm done now since I am going off on the same tangent and thats not why I am here....take care

Animal torture is one of the single biggest indicators of future violent crime potential against humans. And I don't buy for one second that this kid's activities are "inconsistent with how he was raised." Children who come from healthy, well-adjusted homes do NOT torture animals. Period. There is, or was, some level of abuse going on in this young man's life. This guy is the kind of person who goes on a shooting rampage and kills dozens, then you find out he used to torture animals and people thought he was "kind of quiet and a loner." Euthanasia is the only guaranteed future deterrent for him. It's too bad the law doesn't agree.

PRO CHOICE here. Judge no man until you have walked a mile in his shoes. I would rather see a dead baby than an abused baby. I have seen both. Trust me, it is not a pretty sight. As far as animals are concerned, I agree with MDW, I like my animals more than I like most people. They have far more sense and are more entertaining. I have cats. Maybe 10 or more. Two of which live in the house with me. The rest live in a four car built in garage, with heating/air/fireplace. Four huge windows, and a double patio door that leads to a concrete patio. I plant flowers for the bees/birds/butterflys/hummingbirds, all for the cats to watch. All have been neutered/spayed/de-clawed/shots are up to date. I clean every two days, empty three cat boxes. All the cats are rescues. I have a bunny which is a rescue. Bunny is pottied trained to either her box or the cats. I have a bird which is a rescue. I have three Beta Fish, Larry, Daryl and Daryl. I work. I come home and stay home. My house and yard are very clean. I own stock in the Clorox company. I buy blankets/rugs at the Goodwill or yard sales for them to sleep on. They have an old couch/chair. On the rare occasion I leave, I have two sitters that come in on alternating days to feed and clean. My 20 year old diabetic cat died last year. He was nearly blind, partially deaf. I never left him without one of my nurse sisters cat sitting. I did not have children, by choice, and partly because when I did marry I was 35 and then developed a lung disease. I firmly believe 100%, that if you would harm an animal, you would harm a child. I have a neice and nephew that is adopted. I think about what if thier mothers had aborted them? But then again, child abuse or animal abuse is not pretty and I would rather see them dead than physically/verbally/emotionally/sexually/mentally abused. We all should treat each other better. Life is to short to be mean to people, animals, the earth. Amen

PS....about the cost? I am not on welfare, food stamps, WIC, HUD, do not get assistance with heat or air. I am not on medicaid. It's my money to do with as I see fit. My entire life insurance, monies from the sale of my properties/ go directly to my vet upon my death to help the cost of taking care of my animals in case I die. The vet does cut me a deal on shots/meds in exchange for blankets/papers/disposable surgical tools I get at work.

He should be locked up for threatening his girl friend. He should be fined for animal cruelty. He needs a mental evaluation and to be watched for a while but not in jail. I sense that many readers consider him a psycopathic killer who is a danger to the general public. Killing a bunch of cats is cruel and unstable for an 18 year old boy/man but it's not as bad as our young people who are drive by shooting or assulting other people. It's not as bad as the ones who are in destructive and unlawful gangs. It's not as bad as drug pushers and users who live in a world of kill or be killed. He hasn't raped or killed a person. The threat to his girl friend should be taken seriously and dealt with carefully. The senseless killing of our domesticated animals is unacceptable and may ?? be an indication of an unstable person. If he was killing a deer or slaughtering a cow, pig or chicken for human consumpsion then it would have been OK. That is a whole different thing. Yes, he needs to be punished but not buried.

good for you Junie! your cats sound like very happy cats, and greener1, cats do NOT suck, my husband is in the Air Force and deploys a lot, we adopted 2 cats, puff and squirt from the ASPCA, when my husband is gone they definately offer the companionship and attention that i need, i love dogs but i work all day and wouldn't be able to give them enough attention, (i'm a cat person anyway) we need more people like Junie in this world, and i hope this guy gets what he deserves, who in their right mind could hurt a kitten?!?

OK so he was given the cats. when he took them he had to have taken them knowing what he planned on doing with them. what's scary is that it sounds premeditated. sounds like his threats against his girlfriend were more then that. he just got caught ( thank God ) before he did something to her. how could any human being, whether you like cats or not, do such a digusting thing. one by one he slit their throats and beat the adults in the head. the kid has major issues. my son was given an 8 year sentence in a level 3 prison in SC for property crimes. he would never physically hurt any living creature. this kid needs to do some time. to have no respect for Gods creatures? what kind of high did he get out of doing that?

Ok, I am slightly confused on how the topic keeps getting back to abortion? A young man shows one of the classic signs of becoming a serial killer and we're talking about abortions? If I am getting the message correctly.. b/c people love their pets and do not think it is proper to abuse an animal, some how this has lead to a society that transfers the concept of abusing to the kids instead?? So am I to believe that if we as a society started teaching that it was ok to take it out on the animals, then child abuse and abortions will disappear?? Uh... wtf??

This kid is sick. He obviously needs help, but on the other hand, not all people can be helped. Sometimes you are just born a sick SOB. I am not a supporter of PETA, some of their actions are a little out there for me. But I am a pet owner (cats in fact). I do not beat my cats and have no intention of beating any children either. I think anyone who has enough pent up rage to beat either one is working with some deep issues. I hope the courts can do something to keep this kid away from the ex-girlfriend. This was def. a warning sign. Someone had to have seen some other warning signs on this kid too.... I don't think you just wake up one day and decide that you'll start bashing in the heads of some cats.

why would anyone want to hurt these little kittens? if you did not want them just take them to the spca and they would have found them a good home. they suffered so badly in that hot dumpster. to hear that these animals were treated that way broke all of our hearts. i work at londerry school, and one of my co-workers was the one who found the poor cats. she and anothor co-worker of mine pulled those helpless cats out of the dumpster and to have to hear what they saw, kills me. after all the cats were taken out of the dumpster, two kittens were what we thought were okay. my co-worker put them in a box and we gave them water. and we took them to the spca thinking they would be okay. only to find out that the two were not going to make it. breaks your heart. and later in life, chris campbell will get what he deserves.

This child/adult should be JAILED before he hurts another animal or God forbid, a human being. I have seen teenagers "lash out" at animals before and it makes me cringe...they all have some anger and they need to learn to manage that anger. Apparently he has not been taught the difference between right and wrong. I'd be willing to wager a bet that he has spent most of his life attached to a computer (hey, free babysitter!) because it is obvious that his parents know nothing about their own child. His issues (i.e. anger, controlling personality) need to be addressed NOW before it is allowed to manifest itself in his personal relationships...and believe me, it will. There are animal abuse laws in place for a reason and he needs to be held accountable! And to leave them behind a church???? WTF????

And for those of you that think animals "are not equal to humans"...animals only take what they need to survive, and animals know how to love unconditionally, which is more than I can say for most, if not all of us. They have helped us to survive, they feed us and protect us...they deserve our respect. You people who think you are "above" another of God's creatures have a long, long way to go, just like this boy does.

This is to all the people that dont know joel campbell at all. One thing if he was going to kill the damn cats he would have shot them. Also in that note he was ask to take those cats by his dads friend so he could get rid of them. another thing.. his ex cheated on him and she called him that day he got arrested to come and see her and they set him up.. i think it stupid that yall think that he would do something like this for fun. his 18 bday just past and we went deep sea fishing. we had a good time.. he talks to alot of people and very friendly. theres nothing wrong with him.. hes just like any other teenager. goes hunting goes to turkey shoots and loved his girl friend. he got charged more than a reguler murder would get charged and i think all those people was paid off. they made it look like he was a murder. he wouldnt hurt a human or anybody he would care about in no means necessary. so people that think they know him.. yall dont so dont sit there and say wat he did and think he needs to be hung.. because the people that are saying that needs to be hung just like the old days. people kill animals all day in different ways.. and joel wouldnt have killed those cats just for fun.. thank you and have a nice day

There is something seriously wrong with a society who is more concerned about the treatment of animals vice the treatment of humans. A girl was kidnapped, raped, & tortured by a group of freaks & yet the media wants to focus on animals used in dog fights! They're ANIMALS. Really? Who cares? south carolina allows abortions & are more worried

By the way, I have a big rocking chair in the built in garage. BECAUSE, my bunny likes to be wrapped up in a blanket, cuddled and rocked like a baby. Silly rabbit. And yes, I kept the windows open when it's cool, have a kerosene heater for them to toast around. They love the fresh breezes and the warmth of the heater. Even in the summer, when it is hot out and cool in they lay by the heater as if they want to toast beacuse the AC is on.

I'm not going to sit here and say that what Joel did wasn't wrong. It was. It was extensively wrong. However, I have known Joel since he was a young child. I know his parents. I know the environment he grew up in. He went to my church. I babysat him. He really isn't a bad person. That's why it is such a shock to his parents, his friends, his sister, and everyone who has ever come into contact with him. Do I think he should undergo psycho-analysis? Yes I do. Do I believe he is a serial killer in the making, based solely on this incident? Yes. But knowing he is sitting in a cell, telling his mother that he does NOT want to bailed, and having biblestudy with other inmates- sitting with a preacher IN JAIL, gives me and everyone I know that knows Joel hope that this is just a really bad scenario that will hopefully pass. All of you ignorant people who are sitting there saying that he should rot in hell for what he did, shame on you. You have absolutely no right to say that crap unless you actually know him as a person. And no... I'm not a country hick. I'm a grown woman.

I'm sorry CRNinCharleston but people are outraged that someone could be so unfeeling to slice the throats of six kittens and beat two adult cats to the point they had to be euthanized. This behavior is beyond comprehension in a civilized society. I personally hope this young man gets the help he deperately needs.
I'm not buying the "He's not a bad person" stuff. Some of the worst criminals in history were "Nice People". Anyone who could commit the crimes this young man is accused of has some problems that are best left to the professionals.

And I agree... really I do. I know that Bundy, Dahmer, Gein, THK... they were all nice people. But why sit here and hope he rots in hell for what he did. Yes, I know what he did was extremely sick. And believe it or not he did too. But what you people don't see is that there were 2 other people with him when it happened. They are in trouble for egging him on to do it. He's just in the light because he's the one with the blood on his hands. But that's no reason to push him into a cell. He should get help. And I pray he does. I told his mom of a really good psychiatrist that I know of. He wants to get help. He knows he's a serial killer in the making. But he should have support instead of hostility. He should be able to walk out of jail and know that the whole world doesn't hate him. It's people like you who make it impossible for people like him (who want to get help) live normally after something horrible like this.

listen up! there are three facts that everyone reading this knows. 1. what joel did was beyond sick. 2. he not only needs the psychiatric help, but he needs to pay the penalty in jail for the crime he committed. 3. There is no way possible to condone what he did. we can all agree on that (and tripsa, you need to be quiet and go find another topic to preach on).

now most of us are sane, regular people. some of the people who post on here might be a bit extreme, but sometimes thats understandable. now, if all of us are sane and reasonable and we can all agree on that, then why cant we have just a little bit of hope in our reserves for this boy. think about it. if we can find away to stop people from turning into the serial killers and rapists that some are going to be, isn't that a huge step. joel has admitted and agrees with all three of those facts. thats one step towards getting better. yes, it was an inexcusable act, but he is looking for redemption.

even after his sentence has been served and he is deemed mentally stable for society he still needs have an eye kept on him for awhile. but what are you people going to do if you see him on the street. you talk about him needing to be killed now, but why kill him if you can help him and keep more blood from being spilled. if a group of people lynches him are you just going to say that he deserved it then be on your merry way. open your damn eyes people, stop looking for blood and look for a damn cure.

I went to high school with Joel but never knew him personally. Friends have always talked about his "country boy" antics, so I was only a little surprised when I realized I knew who he was.
It's creepy knowing the things people are capable of doing. Does he deserve 8 counts of animal cruelty? Yes. Since he apparently confessed to it, there's no reason why anyone shouldn't agree with the sentencing there.
As nice as a person may seem, what goes on in their head is a different story. Whether they have the lack of common sense and the sheer courage to act on those disturbed thoughts is really what makes a person sick.

I am appalled by most of the comments that I have read in this forum. It is cruel of the people posting here to attack Joel's friends just because of the user names they selected. I have known Joel for several years. Each encounter I have with him is positive. Joel is always smiling and is the type of guy who goes out of his way to help anybody with anything they need.
I acknowledge that what Joel did was wrong, and I believe that he does too. I wish that everyone would stop attacking him, his friends, and his family for a mistake he made. We all make mistakes. Some people's mistakes are worse than others', and some people, probably some of you, have made mistakes just as bad as he has, and yet were never caught.
I don't know the whole story, but I do keep in mind that there is more than one side to every story. Other things were going on that have not been reported in the media because it would make for a less shocking story. (Remember the alligator and bloody arm picture on the front page of the P&C last month? The media THRIVES on sensationalism!)
What I wish everyone could grasp is that our society is inundated with so many issues that lead to situations like this. I am surprised they don't happen more often. Violence on television, in video games, movies, and music, has desensitized us to murder and violence. It has become so common that sometimes it doesn't faze us at all. Until recently, we allowed people to kill babies in the same manner those cats were killed (if you haven't read about partial birth abortions, I suggest you research it a bit, especially those of you saying it is irrelevant to this issue).
When we allow our minds to be saturated with so much violence and a devaluation of human life, is it any wonder that things like this occur? Please do not hear me trying to excuse this behavior. I know that this is horrible, and that this type of thing is seen in nearly every serial killer's background.
What I would like everyone to understand is that this is a person that you are attacking, bashing, and condemning, a person whose life is just as valuable as yours, and certainly more valuable than the life of an animal. It seems to me that everyone is so concerned with attacking Joel that they are forgetting that this is certainly not an uncommon or unpreventable incident.
What if, instead of sitting on the computer thinking of malicious things to say about an unstable young man, we got together and decided to DO something about it? What if we all started trying to combat these occurrences by teaching our children the value of life, fighting the violence in our entertainment, and creating better help for people who need it related to this issue?
There are many other ways to deal with this situation. In my opinion, we are all to blame for this crime for what we allow to go on in society, and I believe things of this nature will continue to occur and get worse until we decide to do something about it.

I can see most of you people are city folk, guys cut throats on animals everyday when they go hunting... the animal just goes to sleep and dies, it's a pretty humane way to do things

how do you think they killed all those avian flu birds, or the mad cows, or the rabid raccoons, etc etc etc

not everyone had the luxury or money to run to the animal clinic everytime they need an animal put down, especially if it's more than one

go out in the woods during deer season and count all the deer hanging from trees with their throats cut, and remember that scene as you sit down to dinner and blame this young man

he was a hunter, which means he probably knew how to do this the correct way

the spca's have been talking about the thousands of cats they have had to put down this year because of the over abundance of strays, I guess they are serial killers as well

there's three sides to every story, yours mine and the truth

and where's all the concern for the women that got raped by the guy they have in cusotdy and a sketch of... hopefully it's him and he goes away for a lot longer than this kid

my point was animals are killed everyday out in the country because of diseases or because it's time to harvest, slicing their throats was/is a widely accepted way

I've seen farmers take sledge hammers to the heads of flocks of possible rabid birds, or hatchets to the necks of ducks and let them run around "like chickens with their heads cut off" because they have been... that's where that saying comes from for those that didn't know, it actually happens

A few thoughts:

Cutting the throats of all those kittens and beating the heads of the adult cats IS the beginning of becoming a serial rapist or murderer. Read and do some research on the FBI's Profiling Division and read what they say about all the serial killers' past and how it all began. Animal Cruelty is a BIG RED FLAG and this person should be monitored even after his punishment for his crime has been served.

As far as the person wanting him charged with statutory rape. Forget it, SC chose to change the law on age of consent to 14 as long as the male is 18 or younger. The solicitor's office was tired of prosecuting sexual assault cases on 16-18 year old boys for having sex with 14 and 15 year old girls. It is called the Romeo Clause if anyone wants to read it.

It is very normal for friends and family to come to the defense of a loved one when they are caught committing a crime, no mater how serious the crime is. The family and friends need a dose of reality. He may be a "nice guy" that smiles and would help anyone out in time of need but psychologically this person has major issues that need to be addressed. I don't believe there is a cure for someone with this sickness. To be capable of such a gruesome crime, the thought of it just sends cold chills down my spine. The BTK killer worked with animals and was a "normal" person in society for a very long time before he was caught. He admitted to beginning his path of destruction with animal cruelty and when killing animals didn't satisfy his urges anymore he moved to human beings. If you research serial killers it isn't so much just the killing of an animal or person it is the need to satisfy their mental, sexual, and emotional cravings. They enjoy seeing and hearing their victims in pain and enjoy watching the victim suffer. I am not saying all people that harm animals are serial killers but what Campbell did was to an extreme. NO ONE can say they know what he fantasies about or thinks of in the deepest parts of his brain. There are many serial killers and rapist that were well-behaved citizens of some community. It has to start somewhere.

Thank goodness GC investigated and followed up. It could have been forgotten or pushed to the side for some reasons or another. There is the Freedom of Information Act to get a copy of the report. Too bad you wouldn't be able to get a copy of the photos of the innocent animals that were mutilated.

I do pray for this person and hopes he is able to suppress any more urges he may have in his future. Unfortunately the justice system will not punish him to the extent needed to make an impression on him or his family. A slap on the hand and an opportunity for him to reoffend or commit an even greater crime.

I was at this scums bond hearing and heard the father tell the court they feared this maniac as well as did other students at Stratford High School. Said this scum had the girl and a friend in his rifle sights and was going to pull the trigger. This to me had the makings of another violent school shooting. Thank god he was arrested before he acted. To do this horrible act of violence to 8 cats only shows how dangerous this scum is and needs to stay behind bars where he belongs.Next time it will be human life.

Accoding to FBI STATICS FOR CHARLESTON, SC MURDER IS 9.4% OF 1,000 PEOPLE. THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IS ONLY 6.4% OF 1,000 PEOPLE. THAT IS SAD. You apparently didn't do to well in law school. If you can't read and comprehend the majority of the posts let me break it down for you. The post are not saying he murdered someone but are expressing concerns for his potential to become more violent if he continues these types of behaviors. It is a proven fact that mutilating animals to the extent that he did is a red flag for the potential for him to progress into becoming something worse, such as a rapist or murderer. The police identified a problem before it got to the point of investigating a homicide or school shooting. It is called proactive not reactive to a larger issue. Yes, the justice system does have its flaws but I give the GCPD a pat on the back for investing time in identifying this person and making him accountable for his actions. Campbell has serious issues that should be addressed and if you are too ignorant to see the writing on the wall then it is a good thing you are not practicing law.

Since you seem to be so concerned think about this. Maybe identifying Campbell just brought down the SC Murder Rate for next year or many more years to come.

The only problem I have with this kid is that he intentionally killed the cats and left them in a trash can to die. Now I read where someone said he was with others and they did not get charged, well that means he is guilty by association. He knew better because of course at the age of eighteen he should have been able to point out the difference between right and wrong. He choosed otherwise therefore he is guilty. Now I don't care if the ex-girl friend broke up with him or not, he still threatened her life and had a gun after she said "ITS OVER!". What part of its over did he not understand? Now if he is a good hunter then he is obviously using his "skills" to do other things other than hunting animals during hunting season. He needs to talk to someone and someone needs to talk to him to see what's going on in his mind. Why did he feel like he should threaten this young girl's life and why he thought it was entertaining to rip up kittens and watch them die? Can we all say something aint right with that picture!
