Motorcyclist dies in I-526 accident
A motorcyclist plunged off a roughly five-story-tall exit ramp to his death Thursday night in North Charleston.
The 42-year-old Goose Creek man was westbound on Interstate 526 about 9 p.m. and was making a curve on an exit ramp to Interstate 26 when his bike hit a retaining wall, said Deputy Police Chief David Cheatle.
The man flew off the motorcycle and landed about 50 feet below on LaCross Road near the entrance to the Highland Terrace/Liberty Park community.
Liberty Park resident Sharon Browne watched as rescue workers moved the body from the scene. "God bless his soul," Browne said. "It's a tragedy."
The man, whose name was withheld late Thursday pending notification of his family, was wearing a helmet, Cheatle said.
Death penalty case moved to March
A Charleston County death penalty case stemming from the torture-killing of a man on James Island has been pushed back a few weeks.
William Oliver Dickerson Jr., who has been charged with murder, was to go on trial in late January. But the case was moved to late March on Wednesday so that Dickerson's defense team can investigate mitigating circumstances from his past, 9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson said.
Issues to be explored include his mental health and his childhood, she said.
Dickerson's case is the first death-penalty prosecution in Charleston since 2002. He is accused of the kidnapping, torture and homicide of Gerard Roper, who police say was abducted in March 2006 after leaving his girlfriend's apartment.

The thin, white man entered the CVS on Johnnie Dodds Blvd and Shellmore around 8:30 p.m. He wore a hat low over his face and a sweatshirt, possibly bearing an Old Navy logo, police spokesman Sgt. Steve Meadows said. Investigators weren't sure what kind drugs he left with.
Anybody with information that could help solve the robbery is asked to call Mount Pleasant police at 884-4176. Anonymous tips can be left with Crime Stoppers at 554-1111 or 5541111.com.
18-year-old reports attempted rape
An 18-year-old woman reported an attempted rape as she was walking near Rivers and Helm avenues early Wednesday, North Charleston police said.
She did not know the man who rode up on a bicycle, grabbed her waist and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at her, a report states. She described him as a black man with gold teeth. He is about 5 feet 8 inches tall, but the report does not give an approximate age.
While pointing the gun at her midsection, he made several attempts to kiss her during the 12:30 a.m. encounter.
The woman broke free and ran home, police said. She waited until Wednesday evening to file a report.
Man's condition still critical after wreck
A man involved in a crash with a North Charleston firetruck Wednesday remained in critical condition a day later, Medical University Hospital reported.
Kirkland Springs, 43, of North Charleston was driving a Dodge cargo van when he turned in front of a ladder truck en route to a fire call at Rivers Avenue and Mall Drive.
The collision sent Springs into the back of the van and injured three firefighters in the truck, though the firefighters left the hospital the same day.
