Summerville school sock hop fundraiser

The Summerville Catholic School Parent School Association is holding its fourth annual silent and live auction, "The Sock Hop of the Century," 7-11 p.m. Nov. 9 in St. Paul Episcopal Church's Doar Hall, 316 W. Carolina Ave., Summerville.

Tickets are $20 and are available at Summerville Catholic, 226 Black Oak Blvd.

In conjunction with the auction fundraiser, the association also is holding a drawing for a golf cart valued at $4,100. Tickets are $10 or three for $25.

Winthrop to host preview for students

Winthrop University will be hosting prospective high school juniors and seniors 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 10 at its Destination Winthrop Preview Day.

In addition to touring the campus, students will have the opportunity to gather information about admissions, financial aid and their prospective major.

Candlelight service set for The Citadel

The S.C. Corps of Cadets will present its Christmas Candlelight Service for the Lowcountry at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1-3 in Summerall Chapel on The Citadel campus.

Cadets from the Protestant, Catholic and gospel choirs, chorale, women's ensemble and members of the Citadel Regimental Band will take part in the annual celebration. Traditional and international favorites will be sung and highlights include the Procession of Lights.

The hourlong program is free to the public. Donations are accepted. Flash cameras and video lights are not permitted inside the chapel.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking on campus and seating in the chapel. For more, call 953-5049.

Music scholarship auditions planned

Charleston Music Club and the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs will hold auditions for summer music camp scholarships Jan. 12 at Charleston Southern University's Horton School of Music.

Scholarships are available for Furman University string and band camps for students in grades 6-12. There also is a scholarship for a student age 13-18 to attend a summer keyboard clinic of their choice.

Students ages 14-18 may audition for an award for private vocal study with a vocal instructor.

The Charleston Music Club awards a scholarship for ages 14-18 for summer study at Brevard Music Center. The winner of that award can compete for further awards on the state level.

Cheek named head of Choral Division

Ann Cheek, choral director and general music teacher at Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary School, recently was elected president of the Choral Division for the South Carolina Music Educators Association. She served as president of the association's Elementary Division 1995-97.

Cheek received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Radford (Va.) University and is nationally board certified in early and middle childhood music. She has been an educator for 28 years.

Retired educators schedule meeting

The Charleston County Retired Educators' Association will meet at 11 a.m. Nov. 13 at Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, at Rivers and Cosgrove avenues in North Charleston.

The featured speaker will be Richard Schreadley, a military retiree, journalist and world traveler, who will share his experiences with a "then and now" themed presentation.

A social hour will follow the meeting and light refreshments will be served.
