Smoke from Georgia and Florida wildfires expected to clear overnight

The hazy smoke you’re seeing and smelling outside today is coming directly from the wildfires in south Georgia and north Florida, according to the National Weather Service.

A southwest wind ahead of a cold front that will push through tonight is pushing the smoke north, and the cloud cover associated with the front is holding the hazy layer in place, said meteorologist Joe Calderone with the National Weather Service in Charleston.

People with respiratory ailments that could be triggered by the smoke should stay indoors, he said.

By Friday, the smoke should be out to sea as the cold front sweeps east this evening and winds turn to the northwest and then west, Calderone said.

“The weekend is looking good,” he said.
