Loss of life one of the worst disasters in 100 years
Tuesday, June 19, 2007
For the nation's firefighters, it was one of the single worst disasters in the past 100 years.
Monday's fire claimed the most firefighters since the 9/11 attacks when 343 died, the U.S. Fire Administration said. Before 9/11, the worst single-firefighting fatality happened in 1994 when wildfires in Colorado claimed 14 firefighters.
Roughly 100 firefighters die in the line of duty every year, while tens of thousands are injured. Before Monday, 47 firefighters had died this year.
