The following are comments from students in four of College of Charleston communication classes. Brian McGee, chairman of the college's Department of Communication, moderated the discussion about last night's debate.

--------------------------------------------------

DANIEL COBIELLA

Who won? "It's a toss-up between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama."

Favorite candidate in the upcoming election: Barack Obama.

A memorable moment from the debate: "The emphasis on race and gender. We've made such a big deal out of race and gender in this country. Equality is important. But the intense focus might be making race and gender bigger issues than they need to be."

My reaction: "I like the format. It makes me wish I were more into politics than I actually am."

--------------------------------------------------

JOE FRONEBERGER

Who won? "Hillary Clinton, without a doubt."

Favorite candidate in the upcoming election: Hillary Clinton.

A memorable moment from the debate: "I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of time spent on gay marriage and the positive reaction from the majority of candidates."

My reaction: "I'm extremely impressed by Hillary Clinton. She's holding her own."

--------------------------------------------------

KIYENA BOYD

Who won? "It's a toss-up between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama."

Favorite candidate in the upcoming election: "It's between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I'm an African-American. I'm a woman."

A memorable moment from the debate: "I remember when Barack Obama talked about education and about reducing the achievement gap. I'm pregnant now with a boy. I want my son to have opportunities."

My reaction: "I'm glad they used questions from YouTube. It's catching my heart. They're actual Americans."

--------------------------------------------------

DEREK BANOV

Who won? "Hillary Clinton will probably benefit most from this."

Favorite candidate in the upcoming election: John McCain.

A memorable moment from the debate: "I liked when Joe Biden talked about Iraq. He was more realistic than most candidates about a timeline to withdraw."

My reaction: "Most candidates were just using the politics of emotion. They weren't being practical. They're telling people what they want to hear."

--------------------------------------------------

NICOLE CHABRA

Who won? "Probably Hillary Clinton."

Favorite candidate in the upcoming election: Rudy Giuliani.

A memorable moment from the debate: The diversity of the candidates.

My reaction: "A lot of the candidates dodged the questions that put them in a tough spot, especially John Edwards."
