MONCKS CORNER -- Â Republican Paul CampbellÂ''s supporters came out in force again Tuesday, leading the former Alcoa executive to a sweeping victory over Rep. Shirley Hinson in the District 44 Senate primary runoff.

Campbell captured 65 percent of the votes to HinsonÂ''s 35 percent in a race that saw higher turnout than a three-way primary two weeks ago, unofficial results show.

He will face Democrat John West in a special general election Aug. 7 to decide who will replace the late Sen. Bill Mescher.

The race had 9 percent turnout, an improvement over the 7.5 percent of eligible voters that turned out two weeks ago.

With the upcoming July Fourth holiday, voting officials and candidates were worried as few as 2,000 of the 49,353 voters would cast a ballot.

The increased number of voters only added to CampbellÂ''s lead. He gained nearly 1,100 votes in two weeks and won all but two of the precincts.

Campbell, 60, and Hinson, 57, both ran on a platform promising tighter restrictions on immigration and good constituent service.

The election results will be certified Thursday at 10 a.m.
