Cross woman dies after car flips over

A 24-year-old woman died after her car overturned on County Line Road near Cross on Thursday morning, authorities said.

Carlethia Bookhart of Cross had been driving north in a 1994 Cadillac when she lost control shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to the Highway Patrol and the Berkeley County Coroner's Office. The sedan went off the right side of the road, then the left side, before flipping over.

Bookhart, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Salisbury said in a faxed release. No other vehicles were involved.

Woman thrown from vehicle, dies

A 37-year-old Cottageville woman died after a crash on Sidneys Road near Walterboro on Wednesday night, the Highway Patrol said.

The woman was headed north in a 1995 Honda Accord about 11:30 p.m. when she went off the left side of the roadway and struck several trees, Cpl. Paul Brouthers said. The woman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car in the crash.

The Colleton County Coroner's Office did not return a call about her identity, though a Highway Patrol message board listed her as Tracy Lynn Cole.

N. Charleston 911 call center to move

North Charleston City Council on Thursday voted unanimously to consolidate its 911 dispatch center with Charleston County.

To improve working conditions, stem the turnover and save money, North Charleston's dispatch center will move by March to the Charleston County Services Building on Bridge View Road, where it will be consolidated with the county dispatch center.

The current city 911 center is not only an inadequate working environment but also has no capacity for growth to handle the increasing number of calls as the city's population continues to surge, Police Chief Jon Zumalt has said.

Police employ dog, Taser to halt robbery

North Charleston police arrested a burglary suspect inside an auto-parts business with help from a dog, pepper spray, a police flashlight and a Taser, a report states.

An officer responding to an alarm at the Pep Boys store at 6420 Rivers Ave. a few minutes before midnight saw the headlights of a four-wheeler being pushed out a side door, a report states. As the officer approached with a police dog, the lights and engine of the four-wheeler shut off. The officer saw a man looking through a small bay-door window and pursued him toward the front entrance.

As the robbery suspect tried to open the front door, the dog latched onto him, police said. The officer wielded his police flashlight as a baton, then used pepper spray in unsuccessful attempts to subdue the man. The suspect relented after another officer deployed a Taser.

Brandon Jordan, 18, of North Charleston was treated for minor injuries at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley then taken to the Charleston County Detention Center, police said. Bail was set at $10,000 on charges of second-degree burglary and resisting arrest, though a bail-bond company took away bail on a previous third-degree burglary charge, according to the jail.

Hanahan woman wins shopping spree

Sharon Calhoun of Hanahan won a $1,000 shopping spree from the Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority.

CARTA staff and local radio stations surprised Calhoun when they delivered the news by phone Dec. 18. More than 80,000 riders had entered to win the shopping spree at Tanger Outlet Center in North Charleston.
