Police dept. Volunteer of Year named

Edward Lawton is Charleston Police Department's Volunteer of the Year.

Lawton, 76, of James Island, is a retired distinguished professor in the College of Charles- ton's education department and former chairman of that department.

Lawton volunteers four hours each Wednesday, putting records in order for the police Criminal Intelligence Unit.

The police department recently recognized its 10 volunteers with an appreciation breakfast.

The volunteers help with administrative and outreach programs and provide technical and investigative support. They donated a total of 326 hours this year.

People interested in joining the volunteer program must be age 18 or older and have no felony convictions.
