WWII vets exhibit

Five Charleston area World War II veterans are featured in an exhibit at the College of Charleston.

"Through Their Eyes: WWII Concentration Camp Liberation As Seen By American GIs" honors veterans who witnessed conditions in German concentration camps in the spring of 1945. Also honored are veterans whose military units participated in the follow-up to liberation.

Area veterans included are W.N. "Buck" Boyles and Henry Smith, both of Mount Pleasant; Mason S. "Mickey" Dorsey of Seabrook Island; and Bernard Warshaw of Walterboro. Also, the late Heyward Shealey of Charleston. They are among 16 veterans whose photographs, documents and "spoils of war" are shown.

The exhibit is at the entrance of the Special Collections department on the third floor of the Addlestone Library at the College of Charleston, 205 Calhoun St.

The exhibit will be at the Addlestone Library through the end of January. Visitors are welcome weekdays 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and on weekends, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. These hours may change during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.

Piano competition winner

Sean Kennard, an artist certificate student of Enrique Graf at the College of Charleston's School of the Arts, won first prize in the XXXIV Dr. Luis Sigall International Piano Competition on Nov. 3-10 in Vina del Mar, Chile.

The event is the only one in Latin America that is a World Federation of International Music Competition.

Kennard received $10,000, a medal and 2008 engagements with the National Symphony of Chile in Santiago and at the Frutillar Summer Festival, plus recitals in several cities throughout Chile. He also was awarded the prize for Best Interpretation of the Required Piece written by Chilean composer Jorge Pepi.

Nineteen pianists from 14 countries were preselected to participate in the three-round competition, which culminated Nov. 11 at the Municipal Theatre of Vina del Mar. The three finalists performed one of two concertos for piano and orchestra selected by the contestants and the jury two days prior. Kennard, 23, played the Chopin Concerto in F Minor, Op. 21.
