Online comments no 'delight'

Solicitor says some postings linked to staffer 'highly offensive'

The Post and Courier
Tuesday, December 4, 2007

As press secretary for Charleston's top prosecutor, Frank O. Hunt prefers to stick close to his boss' message on cases and decisions. On the Internet, however, it's a whole different story.

After six years with the 9th Circuit Solicitor's Office, Hunt finds himself in a sticky spot after someone traced anonymous comments posted on Charleston.net to an e-mail account that bears his name.

More than 100 comments, under the screen name "afternoondelight," were posted in connection with dozens of articles published by The Post and Courier over several months.

From pending court cases to political races, the poster has weighed in on any number of issues, at times with harsh commentary and racial overtones. In his postings "afternoondelight" makes no secret of his disdain for criminals or his favoritism for his boss, Scarlett Wilson, who faces a June primary fight against former Deputy Solicitor Blair Jennings.

Wilson was unaware of the postings until contacted Monday by The Post and Courier. She later said she had not spoken to Hunt but would handle the matter privately. She said the comments are "one person's views" and do not reflect the opinions of her office.

"This person certainly has the right to his opinion, though some of them are highly offensive," she said.

Hunt declined to comment on the substance of the postings but said he was "stunned" that The Post and Courier would reveal the source of comments posted with the expectation of confidentiality. "I will never post another one, I will tell you that," he said.

Charleston.net allows readers to post comments on stories under anonymous screen names, but the site specifically states that comments concerning stories "will not be considered confidential."

In one posting, "afternoon- delight" questioned the credibility of a girl who reportedly had been sexually victimized by an adult at school. The poster suggested that the girl "made the whole thing up" in hopes of getting the married man all to herself. "Conniving little tramp," he wrote.

In another post that day, "afternoondelight" weighed in on the hunt for suspects in a North Charleston killing. "Let's just hope that when they are confronted by police they pull their weapons and have to be shot dead."

His response to a story about a man charged with fondling a child: "Strip him down to nothing, baste his privates with gravy and put him in a cage with pit bulls."

In a handful of posts, "afternoondelight" weighs in on political contests. His take on Charleston Mayor Joe Riley running strongest in white voting areas in the Nov. 6 election: "Dat's cause wite peeple ain't stoopit."

The poster also makes no bones about his choice for solicitor, extolling Wilson's virtues in various posts as a "tough, no nonsense prosecutor" whose "dedication, performance and experience trumps Mr. Jennings everytime." "You have my vote!"

Jennings, who had read the posts, said he was most troubled by the attack on the credibility of the sexual assault victim.

"I obviously don't think people in the solicitor's office should be attacking victims," he said. "Those things are not appropriate for someone in the solicitor's office to be saying under any scenario, and to sort of hide behind a blogger's name is not appropriate either."

Hunt, a former television reporter, was hired by former Solicitor Ralph Hoisington and continued in the job after Hoisington's death in June. Hunt works part time, often in the morning. Many of the "afternoondelight" posts were made in the morning as well, but Hunt said he did not use county computers to make Internet comments.

Charleston lawyer Timothy Bouch, an expert on ethical issues, said judicial rules of conduct wouldn't preclude Hunt from exercising his First Amendment rights and posting comments, as long as he didn't share confidential information or offer legal advice.

Vincent Benigni, an associate communications professor at the College of Charleston, said he advises those studying public relations that it's best to be transparent and take responsibility for your statements. Someone who holds a position of public trust would be better off writing a signed letter to the editor, he said.

"If you're going to go ahead and make outrageous statements," he said, "be prepared for what happens next."

I tried to read the terms to find out exactly what privacy is offered by P&C and came away with my question unanswered. However, sometime back, I called Mr. Paul Crawford (P&C internet manager) about this issue of privacy and was assured that it would take a court order or equiv. to release our identity. I think that Mr. Crawford should comment here on this issue and make it clear when the P&C would release an identity.
If Mr. Hunts ID was not obtained from the P&C, I can only assume that he was a little too open with friends and colleagues and word got out from that end.

That is possible - I just checked several user names' info and the P&C does not provide an E-mail address. So it didn't come from the P&C. I hope Mr. Crawford provides some clarification on this strange situation.

Looks like you are on the right track. Perhaps someone with some internet savvy will weigh in and explain what happened.

First, what IDIOT registers with a 'primary' email account and believes they'll have total anonymity? Ever heard of Yahoo Mail? Hotmail? GMail? Mail.com?

Second, what IDIOT in a public position would make those kinds of comments and run the risk of being exposed like that?

Third, does anybody really expect total 'privacy' on the WWW?

A wise man once said 'Stupid is as stupid does.' Well said Mr. Gump...well said.

Remember...we're on their site and post at their mercy. If someone continually posts troll-like incendiary comments...maybe, just maybe somebody at the P&C decided to dig beyond the surface. If you have forum software that logs IP addresses just look up the 'offending' IP address and see where it leads. It's not rocket science...especially when a user signs up with his PRIMARY EMAIL ADDRESS THAT CONTAINS HIS NAME. IP address + REAL name + somebody sniffing around at the P&C = bad news for person in the public eye.

If it's privacy people want, then they should thier opinions to themselves and not post comments online. Just my 2 cents!!

Also, hiding behind the perceived safety of one's Dell or Compaq is a BIG ego booster. 99 times out of 100 an individual shows their true colors on these sites/msg boards...an environment where they feel safe from retribution.

Believe me, 99 times out of 100 the insensitive flaming comments made by some posters would NEVER be made in person. They don't have the guts to do it, but behind the veil of their HP Desktop...they become 6'9" 280 lbs and bullet proof.

gococks1985...you're right. But we live in a time when speaking your mind...no matter the individual whether right, left, demo, repub, Christian, Muslim, racist, vegetarian...there's always someone just itching to take you down a notch.

Rarely nowadays in our 'shock and awe' culture does anyone want to lift somebody up. That's not headline making.

Excercising privacy/anonymity measures on the WWW just makes good sense and prudence.

I don't understand why or how this can happen. We are supposed to be granted anonymity when we post.

If our commments are offensive, then we will be restricted from posting.

This man has a right, whether he is working for the Solicitor or not, to his opinion.

I don't necessarily agree with his opinions, at least most of the time, but I will fight to my death to defend his right to his opinions. If we deny him his rights, then ours are next.

I expect to insite someone every time I post. With all the political correctness in our society today it seems someone always has their panties in a wad about something. A lot of times things are said tongue in cheek or are strongly worded to elicit comment from others. I don't think the name calling and threats are needed but I would hate to think that we were being monitored as to the correctness of our posts. Some of these threads do seem to turn into a confrontation between certain regular contributors. I personally enjoy and look forward to reading others posts even though I may not agree. I do however wish those with an agenda or wanting to belittle an individual would refrain from posting! Unfortunately I am one that would be stupid enough to ask the same questions and make the same observations in person. This is America for crying out loud and we should be able to express ourselves without fear of reprisal or threats from those that disagree. We all have different perspectives it just depends on which corner of the room you are looking at the subject from. Peace be with all of you!

I perfectly understand Frank Hunt's position, but simply being in that position shouldn't completely silence him in an individual capacity. I know some positions come with expected liberty constraints others have come to take for granted.

On the other hand the "pen name",or "screen name" in more modern parlance, is not only acceptable, but the best way to exercise a Constitutional right while remaining free of reprisal.

Instead of being castigated, the "outing" itself is sufficient punishment. All he did was to utilize a form of dissent in a fashion true to the finest traditions of America. Where would we have been without those papers who allowed anonymous readership or "pen names" to voice opinion of, or dissent with, King George?

Bankz, be the better person! I'm no better than Early or Poorboy when it comes to posting incindiary questions or comments, I just don't fuel negative replies with more negative replies. Having been raised in New England the distrust and sometimes hatered of blacks and yankees was new to me when I first came to the South. I remember the first time I went to a laundrymat in Goose Creek. They had a sign on the door that read "For Whtes Only". I went into the establishment and asked the attendent "Why in the world would you have a laundry where you can only wash white clothes?". The lady about lost her lunch and asked me "Where you from sweety?". Times have changed a lot since then and for the better. I do feel there has been a wedge driven between the races and it has been done by certain self proclaimed leaders (black and white) that pander to that divide. We do tend to talk in generalities on subjects and sometimes the individual gets caught in the stereotype. Blacks have been treated cruelly with distain and disrespect in the past and the yankees did invade the South and killed their loved ones and burned their homesteads so we all have reason to be angry but true progess in racial and cultural harmony will never be attained until we work together and admitt we are human and make mistakes. That won't happen in my life but seeing how far we've come in my life there is hope for the future.

My take on this situation is --

The subject of this article is a foolish man to risk his career by expressing his opinion so openly. He's pretty well thumbed his nose at his job! Who knows? Perhaps he hates his job, his fellow employees and his boss. Hard to say.

If these are, in truth, this man's postings, his lips are pretty loose, wouldn't you say? Think about it. Wouldn't a personality such as his just HAVE to SHARE it with someone in the office? Otherwise, the postings are no fun at all. Maybe he needs some controversy and excitement in his life? I think he's going to have it now!

Further, I have commented on this reporter several times as to his thorough research and coverage of issues. I suggest that it's not The P&C that cannot be trusted, but rather Mr. Smith's source is being protected.

Source? There are a handful or more of ignorant, driven, and threatening posters who I am sure have the abilities to 'trace' online. I vote for someone right in our midst!

Of course the PnC would still have to confirm this, and then go beyond what's reasonable by printing a story about it. Rather than post about it here, however, I encourage everyone to bury the PnC with letters to the editor. If you have a subscription, cancel it (I did). You can always read it here. Just reading some of these comments, tells me that we are living among some of the most racist freaking pigs! Many of you hide behind a computer screen and type some of the most hateful comments one can ever imagine! Hell, some of you only comment on stories that involved black people! Facts: only six comments about the guys who slipped his co-worker the date -rape drug, seven comments regarding the missing funds from Berkely County, and why are you guys not applading the students at Academic Magnet School for their great accomplishments? Instead, some of you bit^& about how many kids these woman have! Yeah, I pay taxes too, but does that give me the right to tell someone how many kids they should have? Hell No! Poorboy: you need to bring your azz on St.Margret where I live, just to see how many young white girls are dropped of by their parents who are to ashamed to even visit their daughter at The Florence Crittion Home for unwed girls. The only difference is the white girls give their child up for adoption, and go back to their perfect world like nothing never happened, whereas the black girls take their child home with them. Does that make them any better???? No, they spread their freaking legs too, and got pregnant! So, please shut the hell up about that garbage!

bankz, your comments are so true, you never know what your child will do behind your back! It is so sad that some of you have so much hate in your heart for people of color. At the end of the day, we all bleed the same damn color (RED)!

According to the article:

Jennings, who had read the posts, said he was most troubled by the attack on the credibility of the sexual assault victim. "I obviously don't think people in the solicitor's office should be attacking victims," he said.

Mr. Jennings' comments are no different than Mr. Hunt's. Until a court says otherwise, we are talking about an ALLEGED victim. Neither one of these men should be making public assumptions about the guilt or innocence of the parties involved.

Regarding the P&C's article...slow news day? Or is this a conscience decision to compete with the smear rags and tabloids? Given the legacy and history of this newspaper we, your readers, expected a higher standard. Shame on you.

Frank O. Hunt's right to freedom of speech has not been denied. No one is guaranteed the right to anonymous free speech. While you may not agree with P&C outing him publicly, the argument about free speech doesn't hold water. I think a lot of people are upset because they no longer feel safe typing things they wouldn't say without the safety of anonymity.

WOW! WOW! WOW!

EARLY!!!!! What did you say that got you removed!!!! You and I battle all of the time but I do support you, poorboy or anyone else to express themselves on this site, regardless if I agree with them or not.

Thank God I use the most common name in the world as my screen name or I would be afraid. VERY AFRAID!!!!!

Some people want to post anonymously as to feel free from the political correct constraints of society. Sometimes the TRUTH HURTS however many feel they will be vilified for saying what EVERYONE knows to be true.

Others use anonymity to hide their true nature, disdainful of women, minorities, gays, etc. Knowing full well that they probably have a Black Lesbian as a supervisor and don't want to lose their job. LOLOLOL Without a doubt there are plenty of racists and bigots and sexists that post on this site, Black, White, Hispanic, male and female. And many of them 'hide' behind a screen name.

SO WHAT? I don't see the issue of people wanting to feel secure behind the veil of anonymity. As long as they understand that IF they are ever exposed that one must be man or woman enough to own up to their words and face the consequences of such "free speech".

I don't have that problem. Frankly I don't give a damn what anyone thinks of me as long as I'm sure what I write is truth as I know it.

Though I could be mistaken, I'm thoroughly convinced that the leak came from within the Post & Courier, most likely from someone with admin priveleges. In any case, it's scary--and positively dispicable--that someone at P&C is abusing our privacy priveleges just to get a hot story.

Though security may not be spelled out in the forum bylaws, I think it's pretty much IMPLIED that we are secure in our anonymity here, and that nobody from P&C is going to publicly rat us out.

But I could be mistaken--watch the P&C go and publish a "who's who" list in tomorrow's paper!

Is any of this a real surprise? How many times have we the public, heard "a source close to (Blank) has comfirmed".... and what about FEMA and the press conference during the CA wildfires, and a host of other dirty tricks when it comes to elections.

The whole thing is pretty funny, if you ask me. Most of my posts I'll put my name. It's not like you can't figure it out if you have some basic computer skills.

Your IP addy is out there for everyone to see.

I write a blog at postandcourierblogs.com/life_floating_by/ and if you comment on a story I post, it shows your IP Address.

Also, cookies are like crumbs you leave them everywhere and they lead right back to you.

So it's not big deal to me, of course I'm not outing people or using profane, racist, or even hateful words to express my views.

And.... right do that at the bottom of this page is the link to the P&C's "privacy policy"....

I think it's a bit ironic that a person who worked so closely for a number of years with at least two local TV stations as well as with the Solicitor's Office doesn't realize that he can be tracked so easily to such online statements. While he's not an elected official, he still holds a prominent position working with victims of crime and unfortunately, such comments cannot be overlooked. Mr. Hunt is a smart and capable man in many ways and has far too much experience in PR, media coverage, and working with the Solicitor's Office (he previously worked about 5 years for Charlie Condon, too) to be saying such things in a public forum. Unfortunately, he just doesn't have the heart, wisdom, or intelligence that I once thought he had which would have prevented such an incident. I am immensely disappointed.

In one posting, "afternoon- delight" questioned the credibility of a girl who reportedly had been sexually victimized by an adult at school. The poster suggested that the girl "made the whole thing up" in hopes of getting the married man all to herself. "Conniving little tramp," he wrote.

In a handful of posts, "afternoondelight" weighs in on political contests. His take on Charleston Mayor Joe Riley running strongest in white voting areas in the Nov. 6 election: "Dat's cause wite peeple ain't stoopit."

These are the two comments that really are alarming. Certainly with his connections to the Solicitor's office, they are in really bad taste. I am sorry that he was outed, freedom of speech and all that, but I can remember looking up his posts pertaining to another issue and he was outed at that time as being someone who worked for 4, and was fired. I don't think it was an inside PC thing at all. I am new to this whole posting thing and really enjoy all of the posts on every issue. But really, when I read some of his posts a few days ago, I thought he was a bit off his rocker.

Everytime you log on you create a trail of ... for lack of a better word evidence. Your computer should it be yours will lead back to you. How easy that is depends on many factors.

In most cases all that can be determined is that you used the same computer to post a comment under a couple of aliases, went to ebay and bought cardboard cutouts of Hillary Clinton, and order a pizza from dominos.

Which is why, everytime you pull up yahoo there are little sidebar ads for guns and ammo in Charleston, SC.

Boards and networks like face book and myspace are great places to express yourself. But you have to keep in mind it's just like putting up a billboard up on I-26.

Put a couple of key words in an email and I'm pretty sure it will be screened by the NSA, FBI and Secret Service.

There were a number of forums that seemed to be into lots of discussions about changing/hiding IP and there was an expert to explain what to do. Of course they had something to sell, like service/server to conceal you IP. Another sight explained in laymans terms how to get some ones IP using various softwear. For me they were able to get to my internet provider (like Comcast), but no further. Sounds like thats where a court order would be required.

while I do agree what the PC obviously did was in bad taste and a serious violation of privacy, even though this is their domain, I don't say anything here I don't or wouldn't say face to face believe it or not

the only real difference is the fact that I don't have a clue who I'm discussing things with here

but yeaaa the PC should slap their own hand, it's obvious that it was their staff that did this... unless someone hacked it just for this info, which is a ridiculous idea because that hack wouldn't be followed with PC's own story on their own outting of someone here

unless you have admin privileges you can't see who's here and where they are coming from, but there is a steady log of anyone's IP that comes on here...

and an even more detailed one of those that log on here with username, times, post, ip, etc etc

this isn't brain surgery, with a mere click they can find out who you are

if you can telnet into here you can do a who and find out who's here and where they are from in seconds, so imagine how much easier that is using their own server software

Wis. teacher arrested for blog comment

By RYAN J. FOLEY
Associated Press Writer

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Bloggers and free speech advocates are calling on prosecutors not to file charges against a teacher arrested for allegedly posting an anonymous comment online praising the Columbine shooters.

Some were disturbed by the post police say James Buss left on a conservative blog, but other observers said it was a sarcastic attempt to discredit critics of education spending.

The suburban Milwaukee high school chemistry teacher was arrested last week for the Nov. 16 comment left on http://www.bootsandsabers.com , a blog on Wisconsin politics. The comment, left under the name "Observer," came during a discussion over teacher salaries after some commenters complained teachers were underworked and overpaid.

Buss, a former president of the teacher's union, allegedly wrote that teacher salaries made him sick because they are lazy and work only five hours a day. He praised the teen gunmen who killed 12 students and a teacher before committing suicide in the April 1999 attack at Columbine High School.

"They knew how to deal with the overpaid teacher union thugs. One shot at a time!" he wrote, adding they should be remembered as heroes.

The comment disturbed at least one teacher, who called police in West Bend, 40 miles north of Milwaukee and home of the blog's administrator. Police traveled to arrest Buss at his home in Cudahy, south of Milwaukee, last week after the blogger gave them the anonymous poster's IP address.

Hummmmm.....

"Don't say stupid stuff", "Don't post if you don't want your identity revealed", etc, etc.

I guess some people here have never heard of Thomas Paine, or understand the plight of people in nations where thought control is a matter of national policy, such as China. I suppose that, in a state that struggles teaching basic reading and math, perhaps study of history and current events have suffered.

Just because googling "democracy" can't get you imprisoned in this country doesn't mean we don't have thought control here as well. Political-correctness is thought control all its own, and while a threat to one's career is not danger to life or limb, it is destructive. As such, a certain degree of anonymity is a necessity to preserve honest debate.

Why do we celebrate the likes of Chinese bloggers while vilifying those in this country that want to express a viewpoint that our own thought police will not permit?

The Post and Courier should be ashamed of what they did here, but having read the haughty, condescending responses to user-posed criticisms of this paper by its editors in the past, I know this will not be the case.

very untrue Sandy, in todays world most people get their news online... not in the actual physical paper you hold in your hands

I'm sure the PC gets way more readers than they ever could have dreamed of before, which means way more people see responses as well

more households have the internet than have cable TV, and on average households have 2 computers

I don't have cable TV but have 5 working computers in the house, and skim most of my news off of the net before ever being interested enough to buy a paper

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

As you can see the 1st Amendment is pretty wide ranging and subject to broad interpretation, of course the world in 1789 was without internet, but the press was much the deal back in the day.

However, the first five words are what count.

"Congress shall make no law" and that is all there is to it. Nothing in there about what you can do, or what the P&C can or can't do, or the NFL or NBA or Park and Recreation, or your employer can or can't do.

Which is why you can't carry a sign over at the Joe saying: "Mayor Riley is a ding dong". Or have a confederate battle flag on your tool box at work if your employer doesn't like it or hide behind a username if the P&C wants to out you.

On the other hand you can call your teddy bear any name you want to.

Not to get sidetracked, but I think the most fundemental question is HOW did this information about Hunt get leaked. I would certainly hope that "someone" is not at the PnC, since PnC's Privacy Policy clearly states:

6. Other uses. In addition to the uses set forth elsewhere in this Privacy Statement, Evening Post may use or disclose personal or non-personal information: (i) in cases where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to prevent a crime, an injury or financial loss to ourselves or to third parties; (ii) to protect against misuse or unauthorized use of this Site (including violation of the Terms of Use); (iii) pursuant to a court order, warrant, subpoena, discovery request, or as required by law; (iv) in conjunction with the sale or offering for sale of some or all of Evening Post; (v) in the event of Evening Post's bankruptcy, assignment for the benefit of creditors, or similar financial circumstances; and/or (vi) when you have been made aware of the possibility of use or disclosure of the information at or prior to the time of collection.

Regardless of the comments made, or how you feel about the comments, the bigger question (IMHO) is WHY PnC felt complelled to violate their own policy.

Understood that, "Charleston.net allows readers to post comments on stories under anonymous screen names, but the site specifically states that comments concerning stories 'will not be considered confidential.' " The comments themselves are not confidential, however the disclosure of personal information is another matter entirely.

Failing in those, it would seem as though the site administrator, the paper's editors, and the article author decided to play Calvinball with their own rules. I wonder if any of them are also on the town council in Mt. P?
