Recalls
The following recalls were announced last week:
-- About 686,500 Nissan Altima and Sentra passenger cars because of problems with a sensor that could lead to engine stalling. There have been no reports of crashes or injuries tied to the issue. The recall affects Altima and Sentra vehicles from the 2002 and 2005-06 model years equipped with a 2.5 liter engine. The crankshaft position sensor could overheat, causing an interruption in the sensor's signal; the engine could stop running without warning while the car is being driven at low speeds. Dealers will reprogram the electronic control module to address the problem. Owners can contact Nissan at (800) 647-7261 with questions.
-- About 264,000 luxury passenger vehicles made in Japan by Toyota Motor Corp., including 49,000 Lexus cars sold overseas. Included in the recall are Lexus models produced in Japan in 2005 and sold overseas, and Lexus, Mark X and Crown models sold in Japan. Faulty fuel pipe design on the recalled models could cause cracks and corrosion and lead to a fuel leak. In the United States, 26,274 Lexus GS300, 5,429 Lexus IS250, and 2,640 Lexus IS350 vehicles are being recalled. There have been 39 cases of trouble within Japan but no reports of injuries. Owners should contact their dealer for details.
-- About 7,100 Performax and Wilton 10-inch sliding miter saws, manufactured in China by WMH Tool Group Inc., because the switch on the handle can fail, causing the saw to smoke, spark, trip circuit breakers and disable the safety brake. The saw could continue to run until it is unplugged. All of this poses a risk of cuts. The company has received six reports of problems with the saws, but no reports of injuries. The saws were sold around the country between August 2006 and March 2007. Details: by phone at 800-689-9928; by Web at wmhtoolgroup.com or cpsc.gov.
-- About 6,000 Grand Gourmet fire pits, manufactured in Taiwan and distributed and sold by Meijer Inc., because the legs can bend or break off while in use. This could cause the pit to tip over, posing a fire hazard. The company has received two reports of bowed and buckled legs, but no reports of injuries. The fire pits were sold at Meijer stores in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky between September 2004 and August 2007. Details: by phone at 866-280-8419; by Web at meijer.com or cpsc.gov.
-- About 3,240 children's fleece hooded, zip-up jackets with neck drawstrings, manufactured in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan and distributed by Bon-Ton Department Stores Inc. The jackets are being recalled because they have a drawstring through the hood, which could cause a child to strangle or become entangled. No injuries have been reported. The jackets were sold under the Burnside brand at Bon-Ton, Bergner's, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's and Younkers stores nationwide. They were sold between August and October 2007. Details by phone at 866-798-2875; by Web at bonton.com or cpsc.gov.
-- About 57,000 "Power Bolt" Y-Frame and Ultimate Y-Frame Adjustable Pitchbacks, imported by Dick's Sporting Goods and made in China, because the upper portion of the frame can collapse after both locking pins are removed, posing a laceration hazard. Dick's has received three reports of finger and hand laceration injuries. The recalled products, made by Hierarch Enterprises Co., have a Y-shaped metal frame with attached netting that will return a thrown ball to the user. The products were sold at Dick's stores nationwide and on its Web site. Details: by phone at 866-677-4771; by Web at dickssportinggoods.com or cpsc.gov.
-- About 125,000 lounge chairs and recliners, imported by Dick's Sporting Goods and made in China, because the plastic support brackets can break and cause the chairs to collapse, posing a hazard to users. Dick's has received 19 reports of the chairs and recliners collapsing, including 17 injuries involving lacerations and back pains. The recalled chairs include the Lazy Lounger, a recliner and an oversize recliner. The chairs were sold at Dick's stores nationwide and on its Web site from February 2006 to August this year.
