Arrest of Egyptian students stirred unfair reaction, they say

At the conclusion of the Friday service, the Central Mosque of Charleston congregation stands to prayer on Friday.

The message Imam Mohamed Melhem delivered during the Friday afternoon prayer service at the Central Mosque of Charleston emphasized the unity of Islam and its universal message of peace.

But in the wake of the recent arrests of two Egyptian students driving through Goose Creek, he also expressed the collective frustration of local Muslims, many of whom think the public reaction to the arrests has been exaggerated and unfair.

"The media went crazy," Melhem said. "Most Muslims are good citizens and good contributors to society."

And nothing much is yet known about the two students, he said, so why the rush to judgment?

"We believe in the system and the court of law and believe it will be fair," he said.

At the mosque, Mehmet Bilgen, a radiologist, said Islam has become the latest monolithic "enemy" of the United States. It used to be communism and fascism and drug kingpins in Central and South America. Now, it's a religion that most Americans don't really understand, Bilgen said.

Youssef Megahed and Ahmed Mohamed, both in their 20s, each were charged with possession of an explosive device after authorities said they found pipe bombs in Megahed's car

during a traffic stop on Aug. 4. The two men, students at the University of South Florida, told authorities the items found in the car were fireworks. The FBI, which performed the initial search of the vehicle, has not indicated whether the material seized constituted a pipe bomb or other explosive device.

Numerous reactions to the story have been posted on Charleston.net, many of which express concern and assume guilt, and some of which are overtly hostile. "I BELIEVE in racial profiling," one person wrote. "It does NOT matter how small the 'home-made bombs' were that were discovered in the trunk of that car, but that they WERE discovered!" another wrote. "Personally, I prefer to throw these boys into the lake and let the gators take care of 'em. Let their Allah save them then," wrote a third.

Central Mosque President Alan Is'mail Ali said Muslims are most concerned with taking care of their families and looking out for one another, but those priorities are not newsworthy. Only Islamic extremism gets the headlines, and that contributes to misunderstanding, Ali said. Americans tend to generalize about Muslims, and that causes Muslims to believe that the war against terrorism is really a war against Islam, he said.

"Anyone who claims (to be) a Muslim and then recklessly and intentionally hurts or even kills, either non-Muslims or even Muslims, in the name of Islam, is a spineless degenerate!" Ali said.

Melhem said that he has received phone calls from people asking if the two Egyptian students were affiliated with the Central Mosque. He wondered why people should assume this as they have been living in Florida.

Three-year-old Kinsey Hallaba turns to her father Radwan (Hallaba) as the Central Mosque of Charleston congregation kneels for prayer on Friday.

"Muslims are good and do the right thing," he said. "If we see anything suspicious, we are part of the community, we help." But when Muslims feel threatened by a system they perceive to be prejudiced, they are less likely to cooperate with that system, Melhem said.

Anti-Muslim incidents were up 25 percent nationally in 2006, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The rise was attributed to post-9/11 fear of Muslims and violence overseas.

Chaudhry Sadiq, director of the South Carolina chapter of CAIR, said that jumping to conclusions about the two Egyptian students only compromises the values of the U.S. and puts Muslim communities on the defensive.

Media reports of the Goose Creek episode have been highly exaggerated, Sadiq said. "All the time, resources and energy could have been applied to peacemaking."

Frank Shealy, 63, a West Ashley resident who has been following the story, said he hopes the two men are innocent but expects the FBI to conduct a thorough investigation. The combination of facts — specifically the use of smaller roads on the way to North Carolina and the materials in the trunk of the car — suggest to Shealy that the students were making a "trial run."

Possibly, the men were pawns, asked by some authority to test the waters, Shealy speculated. In any case, it is odd that, just when the U.S. is at war with Islamic fundamentalism and especially attuned to the possibility of domestic attack, two men should pass near a military installation off the beaten path between Florida and North Carolina, he said.

"You'd think they'd go out of their way to make sure they didn't have anything that would raise questions," Shealy said.

Imam Mohamed Melhem preaches at the of Central Mosque of Charleston on King Street at Romney on Friday.

The Megahed family visited Youssef Megahed in jail on Friday and expressed gratitude for the respect shown to them by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office and detention center officials.

"After meeting with Youssef, we now believe more than before in the innocence of Youssef in this matter, and feel this incident is all a big misunderstanding," the family said in a statement. "Our family would like to reaffirm what we've said before: We love this country and consider it home, we have faith in the justice system and believe in the laws of the land, we're continuing to fully cooperate with law enforcement."

In a telephone interview, Samir Megahed, Youssef's father, said his son often gets lost on road trips. They have traveled together to Canada, California and Las Vegas, he said. "Every time, I drive, he sleeps," Samir Megahed said.

On a recent trip to Orlando, Youssef called his father a dozen times to ask for directions, even though he was relatively familiar with the area, Samir Megahed said.

It is likely he got lost once again during his drive through South Carolina, Youssef's mother, Ahlam Megahed, said.

While the family was gassing up their car in Moncks Corner, preparing for the drive back to Tampa, several people stood staring at them, according to Youssef's sister, Mariam.

Charleston attorney Armand Derfner, who has worked on civil rights cases, said it is an unfortunate reality that many Muslims in the world are enemies of the U.S., and that some have killed Americans. This fact doesn't justify irrational anti-Muslim sentiment, but it does account for the suspicion raised in this case, he said.

Derfner makes a distinction between general violence and violence committed in the name of a religion or higher authority. During World War II, the Japanese were enemies of the U.S. and killed American soldiers in the name of nationalism, Derfner said. As a result, distrust of those Japanese living in the U.S. ran so high they were imprisoned in camps.

"We look back today and regret our suspicion of the Japanese," Derfner said, wondering if there is a lesson to be learned from that experience.

How should we regard Muslims in the U.S., he asked. Are Americans treating them the way they treated the Japanese? Or are the circumstances different?

"It's easy to say we should learn from history," Derfner said, "but the question is, how do we figure out what the lessons mean?"

At the mosque, Imam Melhem said authorities should be prepared to apologize if the allegations against the Egyptian students prove untrue.

"We love everyone, even if they don't love us," Melhem told worshippers. Then, a roomful of men and women kneeled upon the carpeted floor and prayed.

The police found crap, if they had anything that just hinted that it was a "problem", the police would have had it out in the open so everyone could see.
When you spend all your time training to "do" something, well ya just have to do something.

Our Nation has a long history of immirgration and each new group has experienced some form of discrimination. The acronym "NINA" comes to mind. It was used on "Help Wanted" signs and stood for "No Irish Need Apply" and was directed toward the Irish Catholics who arrived after the famous famine in Ireland. I am a decendent of Eastern European emmigrants who arrive here just before world war one. They did several things to blend in and not call attention to themselves. They Anglicized their first and last names. All the childern where give American sounding first names. They moved into mixed communities, ensured that their children learned to speak Engish, got educated and got on with being a part of the Ammerican experience.
What we see today here and especially in Europe are floods of emmigrants from the middle east who are not trying hard enough to fit in. The recent riots in France are particularly disturbing.

This would not be tolerated in Arab nations if this story where about Americans and God-forbid Christians.

Regarding this question by this article tell the good Imam, YES they're getting what is deserved! You serve a God, a religion that tells you to kill infedels if they don't believe as you believe. Which if it comes down to it you yourself would choose to do. You just will not say it here. The Japenese then in WWII were rounded up and placed where we could keep an eye on them. And for good reason! You don't have to ever worry about that, as the NEW PC USA doesn't have the will to do that ever again.
I serve a god that promotes love and true peace in his son Jesus Christ. Where my God hates the shedding of innocent blood, murder is a sin with no promise of 72 virgins and a one way ticket to paradise.

It's obvious from the responses to this P&C article that the Muslim population in SC and the USA is not trusted and with good reason. When the Imans and CAIR are allowed to make excuses for any Terrorist or terrorist-like Muslim actions and we hear nothing from the so-called moderate individual Muslim, what do you expect? Do a poll of US Citizens and you will find that the vast majority of Americans distrust the Muslim community and they will not be trusted till they reject the phony propaganda of their leadership and speak up for this great country and it's freedoms and quit whining about their faux oppression. We welcomed the Muslims to our country and if they donot like it here, we welcome them to go back to where they came from. IF we have another Muslim attack in-country, we will witdraw that welcome mat and very likely demand you leave our country. Nice try P&C, we don't trust your reporting on this problem either! I'm afraid, doiseeu2, that common sense is something that a lot of people are sorely lacking. Kinda like tolerance, educating ones self on things, etc...
I was very fortunate to have a dear on-line friend who is of the Muslim faith visit some mutual friends two Christmases ago and, I must say, that she was a delight. We talked a little about her religion and she stayed in her traditional garb the whole time she was here. And perhaps to the uneducated horror of people like the ever-enlightened RockSolidRepublican, she didn't rant on about Allah the way he rants on about "they all need to find Jesus". RSR needs to get it through his Rock Solid head that not everyone believes in his Jesus; it's called Religious Diversity. I know that "diversity" is a four-letter word in his eyes because it intimates that this is the "Christian" nation people like him rant and rave about.
A little tolerance isn't a bad thing. Why do we let a few extremists rule how we think? God knows we've got one in the White House...

Mankind is in serious f****** trouble. What I'm about to write here is not advocating or denigrating either "side." I'm just offering some food for thought. Anyone responding to me as a basher, racist, or "supporter of the enemy" has missed the intent of this comment. Anyone needing to stoop to the "you are not an SC native (and therefore, are yankee)" line of logic is not worthy of a response. I grew up in NC, was born in Richmond, VA (which many seem to have forgotten was the capital of the Confederacy) and my family has history back through VMI fighting those darned ol' yanks. Not that ANY OF THIS has any bearing on the veracity of my points here.

A history of warring has been caused by and shaped the revisions and applications of the religious texts of BOTH the Qu'ran and the Bible.

Looking at the recent history of mankind, we have The Crusades, The Inquisition, any number of Papal decrees, French religious wars (which ultimately is how some families came to be in Charleston, I suppose), schism, the canonization of men who used Christianity to justify war (Aquinas, Augustine, et seq.), the Holocaust... I can't offer much perspective on the side of Islam, but it is logical that its course lies somewhat parallel.

Neither Christianity or Islam can ignore their respective bloody histories, nor can they deny that centuries of antagonism have brought us where we are today.

Most Americans are of the "just leave us the hell alone, don't blow up our stuff, and you can do whatever" mentality, with the conceit that we don't stop being vigilant. There's always some sickos out there. But we're not living and let live... we're in a war on Muslim soil! True, we were not the aggressor. But it is daft to think that 19 hijackers accurately represent the collective mind of over 1 billion Muslims. Imagine, the acts of 19 men (actually, more, when you consider USS Cole and other attacks) have caused an entire nation of 300 million to go to war. There isn't an American general alive who wouldn't kill for that magnificent ratio of asset vs. outcome. The sad thing is that we are failing right now. So far we've done little but

a) demonstrate our willingness to cause tens of thousands of deaths and spend billions of dollars in response to the actions of 19 people, and

b) accomplish the exact opposite of what we intended - based on almost 200 000 munitions missing and growing anti-American sentiment due to civilian casualties

Yes, we've taken out some terrorist leaders. We were almost making progress in Afghanistan (I'm thinking of my friend who is training Afghan police right now), but the Taliban's ranks are growing, and they seem to be reorganizing (and let's not forget, WE trained them, WE funded them).

Though intended to be a "war on terror," this has become a war on religion, which fits nicely with history.

My opinion:
Neither "side" seems willing to budge, and the groundswell of hate and animosity that this is causing will take us to somewhere truly awful - I think of my sister living in DC, and I can't help but think of a mushroom cloud. I don't have the answer other than to say that as a species I think that we haven't earned the right to survive in the eyes of any god.

the religion of islam, if you wish to call it that - I call it a "movement", calls for the death of anyone not agreeing with it in just about every other country but this one...

mainly because it's not legal to do that here, and in the other countries where they are trying not to word it like that it's because they rely on our money one way or another and know it would cost them dearly if they weren't careful in what they say

even here the likes of the Farrakhan's have not been silent about their intentions

I don't believe for one moment Islam is about peace, or religion... it's about a complete take over as they themselves say all over this world

is your Islam different? then offer a public forum and events that invite Christians and others outside of your religion to come and find out who you are and what you really believe in

one of the things we true assimilated Americans will have to over look is that we are now taught by our heads of state and defense dept is that you will lye in wait and act like part of us when really you are lying and waiting for the time when you are called to act

be part of our American culture, rather than being apart from so we can all really get to know you so we can make our own decision of who you really are... if you care too of course

and about the Japanese, they were willing to be rounded up until they were proven innocent... after all it was them that invaded us, sorta like 9/11 or 93 or or or

you should feel warm and fuzzy anytime an American is actually nice to you instead of complaining about those that aren't

like I said, if you want to be looked at differently you will have to create that by bringing yourself out to us... not by waiting for us to come to you...

I think I'll go to the range today and throw some lead around, it appears we have a war coming from the inside on it's way from many sides and borders...

I think a picture is worth a thousand words. The picture of the day can be found on page 1A of the P&C. The scene is the Central Mosque in Charleston during Fridays service. Take a look at the arrangement of folks by gender. Men in the front, women and childern in the back. The men are dressed in more or less in casual attire appropriate for the weather, but the women and childen are covered from head to foot in attire that must be very hot. I am of Catholic background and it has been the custom for our women to cover their head before entering church and this is usually manifested by a small cloth or scarf on their head, not anything like what I see in todays picture. My point is Moslum men should lighten up on their women. In my world wives and childern pray beside their husband/father - not in the back of the church and are not forced to wear clothing inappropiate for the weather. You folks have a huge image problem and when Americans see groups that include women dressed as discribed above red flags go up.

By the way, there is an availability heuristic here. Look at the point of this article - it was to get the opinion of local Muslims to the anti-Muslim reaction of many locals to this arrest.

Apologizing for or denouncing the actions of someone just because they claim to be of your particular mindset, when their actions clearly indicate they are not, is non sequitur. What Christian apologized for, denounced, or distanced himself from Tim McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, or even Hitler? No one! It wasn't necessary.

Did anyone actually READ this article? The mosque president does in fact denounce terrorism and its connection with Islam, by saying, "Anyone who claims (to be) a Muslim and then recklessly and intentionally hurts or even kills, either non-Muslims or even Muslims, in the name of Islam, is a spineless degenerate!"

What is the factual basis for your comparison of Christian and Islamic extremists? Everyone is well aware of the dozens of terrorist attacks around the world from the World Trade Center attacks, to the USS Cole, to the nightclub bombings in Jakarta which have been responsbile for killing many, many people. I'm not aware of similar episodes by Christian extremists. I'm not supporting wholesale mob attacks on Muslims, but your statement is simply false.

The fact of the matter is that not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists have been Muslim. If you have to take precautionary acts to detect terrorists, it makes perfect sense to focus one's attention on Muslims. If we wanted to be "fair," then all people would be equally targeted for added suspicion, but we should be more concerned with efficiency.

yes I have thought about it and may actually act on it, I'd like to hear both sides... without being called a redneck of course, even if I am one... lol

groups need to get together if this is ever to get resolved, not individuals because individuals can be swayed one way or another by emotion... you need a "gathering" to keep the checks and balances in place

with billions of muslims out there they can't all be bad or WW4 would long be over and none of us would still be here

that's not to underestimate the thousands we know are here to start trouble, we just don't know who is who among them

it's going to take an ongoing public forum to distinguish the differences between the good and bad, and even then you have to keep your eye's open

and these muslims are on there way of taking over as well. with these stores they are opening, where does there money go? to send to there home country to fund the war against who? america.
when is everyone going to stand up for themselves, and say enough is enough?
if those 2 young men had no bad intention, then why was that in the trunk of the car?someone said to me ,they think they were on their way to the walmart in goose creek, maybe to blow it up. it was the tax free weekend, how many people would they have killed.yes, there is alot of prejudice against these kind of people and for very good reasons. i don't remember any americans blowing up the towers.if they are in school in tampa ,why be in goose creek for what reasons. more to the story than is being told in so many ways.think america before it is to late.

what are your thoughts about terrorism over diplomacy?

your commitments to this country, the USA?

what do you have to offer this country and how will you succeed in doing so?

as our former president once said, "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."

as well as "If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity"

is there a place in your society for beheading those that don't agree with your religion or is your religion in fact a religion of peace and open dialect even with those that do not understand or agree with you?

I'm all for all of us getting around a table and reaching the point where we can help each other, as long as we are really striving for that same goal and not deceiving each other with a hidden agenda in play.

what questions do you have for us?

and please people don't turn this into an insult opportunity... we all know there is a lot of emotion on both sides over the way things have changed over the years

I'm obviously not advocating killing anyone except our enemies that try to eliminate us, and I will personally hold arms to protect our way of life so people like you can insult each other while still keeping your "head"

WHAT THIS CASE IS ABOUT! (thanks Cyndi!)

Some people are speculating now that these 2 idiots did this to start a controversial court case like the "flying Imams."

Both of them had big smiles for their mug shots. Coincidence or planned in advance? Pipe bombs made of PVC? Why not steel? Questionable components for a bomb? Not quite a bomb but just enough to bring charges that will be defended by an Army of CAIR / ACLU provided attorneys who will soon be flying into Charleston. The incident occurred right next to where Captain Yee (acquitted) and Jose Padilla (currently on trial) were held. Both of them and their families had conflicting stories as to why they were in Charleston. CAIR immediately called a news conference in Tampa and said they were "victims". Why Charleston? There are racist people there you know!

I'm thinking that's what this is all about. They are deliberately trying to start a controversial court case to portray themselves as "victims" and "martyrs" for their pan-Muslim cause. They will try to show that Charlestonians are bigoted and racist people and they are "victims" of the cruel American justice system.

Any thoughts??

One question: In the Islam religion, are all non-muslims still officially referred to as "infidels"? Isn't that what they call us?

==========================================
as an atheist, I have experience a lot of bullying and harassment from redneck biblethumpers who call everybody different a name....n*gger, d*ke, f*ggot,

Christians gossip, backstab and treat each other like dirt with their "holier than thou attitude" attitude even in church. I have christian friends telling me I am going to burn in the lake of fire for questioning a virgin birth. I have read the Koran and the Holy bible. They both have passages that should be scratched out but the Koran is more peaceful than the bible b/c it has fewer negative passages.

Muslims actually love Jesus along with Moses and Abraham....they just don't believe a god can die....the world would go into chaos if god died.

I have even been called a satanist for not believing in christ and I come to hate a lot of things in america and I live here. Look at how our own people talk trash about our leaders, educational system, and government and remember that most foreigners only believe what their country's tv show them.

I am friends with muslims. They are kind and considerate. They are not half as loud and bigoted as redneck men who thinks that "everyone is getting a handout but them".

This war is over the middle east much like the irish and english fought each other. It has more to do with land and money than religion.

Now everything I have said is in the koran yet a muslim will complain and have this taken down. They are so ashamed of what they really are. Jammer:

You asked the following questions.

what are your thoughts about terrorism over diplomacy?
- Diplomacy is certainly better than terrorism. I don't think anybody in his/her sane mind would advocate criminal activity. Are there criminals who claim to follow my religion, yes. Were they not criminals in other religions who also resorted to terrorism? The IRA, Irish Republican Army, is one that comes to mind.

your commitments to this country, the USA?
- I work for the Federal Govt. I think that speaks for its self.

what do you have to offer this country and how will you succeed in doing so?
I didn't immigrate here, I was raised here. I refer you to the above statement. If you need specifics well I have an Ivy league education that I am sure is a benefit to this country otherwise the govt would not have hired me.

as our former president once said, "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.

- No, I don't see where you got this from but there are criminal elements who claim to be part of the religion who will resort to such vile levels. Terrorism has been condemned by the people from the religious establishment but for some reason it does not get national coverage. I remember NPR airing a segment back in 2005 where the American Muslim Council condemned all acts of terrorism. I heard it my self on NPR, but as usual it did not get any national coverage. Mosques routinely condemn all acts of terror in their Friday sermons, I don't know how many times I must have heard it. The following is a verse from the Quran (5:32):

Because of this did We ordain unto the children of Israel that if anyone slays a human being-unless it be [in punishment] for murder or for spreading corruption on earth-it shall be as though he had slain all Mankind; whereas, if anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all Mankind. [40] And, indeed, there came unto them [41] Our apostles with all evidence of the truth: yet, behold, notwithstanding all this, many of them go on committing all manner of excesses on earth. [42]

IamMuslim (anonymous) says...

what questions do you have for us?

I understand the pain that people feel when they see loved ones or even friends killed. You have definitley experienced that yourself as you mentioned the Pentagon but so have many Muslims as well. My wife, who is also Muslim, lost her cousin in the wtc attack, they did not find his body for 6 months. His mother would wait for him on her porch in LA hoping he would come back, he never did. Many Muslims also died in that attack. In fact more Muslims die from "Muslim" terrorist actions than non-Muslims. Just look at Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine..... the list goes on. According to the British Lancet journal almost 600,000 Iraqis have died since the conflict began in 2003. 30-40% of those deaths were a result of misguided military actions. That means anywhere from 180,000 - 240,000 were a direct result of the occupation. What about the 500,000 Iraqi children that died during the embargo from '92-'02? Who speaks for those children? To put that in perspective, being that the population of the US is 10 times more than Iraq, that would mean between 1.8 -2.4 million civilian deaths and 5 million children!

Lets now take Israel into perspective. The acts of terrorism resulted in numerous deaths to innocent Jewish women and children. Is that wrong. Yes of course it is, but so is taking someone's land. Would you be willing to give up your house to a Native Indian because that land belonged to his forefathers 200 years ago? How do you expect the Palestinians to do the same when that claim goes back 2000 years? I don't think the Palestinians should go around taking revenge in the way that some do, but in an extreme emotional state you do not know how one would behave. I would like to also bring your attention to the past where between 1942-1945 alomost 6 million Jews were eliminated due to the concentration camps. More Jews died just in those 3 years than have ever died at the hands of Muslims through out our history. This is even if you were to include all the Arab-Israeli wars and all acts of terrorism against the Jews. Would it be fair of me to fault the Christian faith for this? No it would not. (Eventhough Hitler would invoke Jesus's name in some of his speaches and I don't think he was an atheist.) In fact during the Spanish Inquisitions it was the Muslims, the Ottoman Turks, who gave refuge to the Jews of Spain. What about the Crusades should I also fault the Christian religion for that. No I do not think so either. What about Racism? Are all Christian Racist or are all Racists Christian? For every one Racist Christian I think I have met at least 1000 noble, honest, decent Christians as well. I went through the busing here so I saw racism at its very core as it was perpetrated on the African-American community.

My parents are the ones that emigrated here, and my father believes as I do that Americans are some of the most kind hearted, forgiving and friendly people on this earth. I have been to many countries in my life, Asia, Europe, Carribean, nobody compares to their sense of friedship. It is our Foreign Policy that is giving us "Blowback" not the people. You need to distinguish between the two. I could go on and on about this subject but it would be better for you to read about it and understand what has been going on in the Middle East over the past 60 years.

Some of the books:

All the Shah's Men by Stephen Kinzer
- It talks about how a democratically elected govt was overthrown in Iran in 1953. The CIA sponsored this Coup.

A Pretext to War - by James Bamford
- The build up to the Iraq war

Dangerous Liasons - by Andrew and Sandra Cockburn
- It talks about the games that were played by the Mossad (Israeli Intelligence)

By way of Deception - Victor Ostrovsky
- Former Mossad agent

The other side of Deception - by Victor Ostrovsky

Imperial Hubris - by Michael Scheurer
- Former CIA Officer

Dogs of God - by James Reston
- Talks about the Spanish Inquisition

Warriors of God - by James Reston
- Talks about the Crusades, Sallahudin (Salladin) and Richard the Lion Heart

If I have said something that has offended anyone then I apologize, or if you think that my answers were too abrupt, then I apologize, But in the interest of time and to avoid being too polemic or disingeuous I tried to make it as brief as possible.

In Summary I would like to say that it is easy to hate but very hard to understand.

There are many White Americans that differ with our war in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan, for instance, does that make them a 5th. columnist? Are only Whites entitled to their view on Iraq, but when a Muslim expresses his view he is the 5th. Column. What about what he said about how much he likes the America people and how much respect he has for them?

By the way if you dislike Muslims so much why did you defend those three and why on earth did you give to CAIR? Is that not hypocritical of you?

CAIR, now there's an interesting group. They claim to be pro American but their leaders have been linked to supporting terrorists and they are the first to defend terrorist behavior. They have claimed prejudice on the part of the police in Goose Creek but I think the police officer's did a great job.

I smell a rat in CAIR. They talk about being patriots yet their actions say the exact opposit.

I go back to my original point. Our most precious freedoms will be used to ultimately defeat us most likely assisted by the ACLU and CAIR.

I'll look up some of the books you posted Iam...

working for the fed gov means nothing except maybe it gives you more access to things we the people really don't want you to have access too... but for diversity

we have foreign IT departments running our entire local government computer systems here now, which is absolutely ludicrous to most... low bid and our government isn't allow to discriminate based on what you look like or believe in, yet...

but then again our government out of diversity often hires crooks and spies as we all know and read about because many are caught way after damage is done

government pay isn't that comparable to the private sector, the "cream of the crop" rarely work for the government unless they are in need of the benefits because they have small children or sickly people in their immediate family

or because they have a line of family and friends for generations that have worked at the same place, so working for the government definitely doesn't impress anyone

if anything it sends another red flag, possible radicals working for our government with access to all of our confidential information... which I'm sure goes on in many offices

but yes I hear what you're saying and I do hope we can all meet somewhere in the middle so we can all live with each other peacefully... it'll take everyone moving and it's your peoples turn

try disapproving in large numbers in the mainstream media about the injustices done to the Americans instead of sitting back condoning the parties the Muslims had to rejoice of 9/11 as if those people in those buildings/planes deserved that

note I didn't say "to the Christians", I said to the Americans... because we are a make up of many different people and beliefs

Israel has nothing to do with this conversation, and isn't "our Israel"

for Christian belief Israel is God's chosen people that actually turned their backs on him, but they are still God's people so naturally Christians will not go against that

but for American's Israel is just another country that Muslims seem to want wiped off of the map and state so all over the news

most foreign Muslims seem to want us wiped off of the map too, so that is our common denominator with Israel and why we feel the need to help them from becoming extinct

Hitler wasn't a Christian, he was one of the worlds worst seen liars and he was actually half Jewish... we Americans are the one's that stopped him too, not for the Jews but for the world

I'll listen to what you people say but actions speak louder than words, when your people come out in the masses praising and showing protection for the great nation of ours then I will start believing you really want this country and the people in it to survive and get a long peacefully

that's enough said for now...

Authorities executed a search warrant at a Temple Terrace home Saturday in connection with the arrest of two USF students earlier this week.

The search took place at 12402 Pampas Place in Temple Terrace.

Multiple agencies were at the scene, including the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, ATF, Secret Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
[...]
More than two dozen investigators searched the house for more than five hours. They said they were looking for ties linking the men in the home to the USF students arrested.

They pulled out long, large sections of PVC pipe, bags of evidence, and a suitcase.

According to the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser, the residence is registered to Noor Salhab. He is listed with the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors, and a Google search showed him to be the owner of Pal Realty.

FOX 13 interviewed Salhab and his wife, Ana Salhab, in 2001, when the house was targeted with anti-Muslim graffiti shortly after the September 11th attacks.

He said at that time that he and his family had lived in the home for 14 years.

But even though he owns the house that was searched Saturday, records show he and his wife live in a house nearby at 6004 Soaring Avenue.

Records show the owner of that house is Sameeh Hammoudeh, a co-defendant in the trial of Sami Al-Arian. Al-Arian is the former USF professor who was acquitted on most charges of funding terror-related organizations. He pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide services to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Many folks in the United States have expressed outrage at Muslim leaders not speaking out against Terrorism. Frankly, I have heard numerous instances when Muslims have spoken out against terrorism. However, I'm wondering why Americans are so hesitant to take on our own extremists.

A quote from Ann Coulter: "we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity".

It's an unfortunate fact of life that we have our own nut cases in this country. Perhaps we would have more credibility around the world and more support with the war on terror if we rejected the extremism on our home turf.

And anyone who thinks that the bible is less violent than the Koran simply hasn't read the book at all. Quotes can be taken from either source to justify killing and other evils. The vast majority of both Christians and Muslims are good people. Unfortunatly, both religions also have their share of evil folks...and the majorities of both religions should recognize the evil in their midst and speak out against it.

Actually, the total estimated Muslim population of the world is about 1,294,000,000 which is roughly 20% of the world population. The estimates that I have seen of Al Qaeda's membership is roughly 18,000. Even if it were many times higher it would still be a statistically insignificant portion of Muslims.

In order to prevail against these extremists we have to win over, or at least not offend the overall Muslim community. Given the size of the Muslim population, we simply don't want to add to the number of extremists...

Which brings me to President Bush's use of the word Crusade to define our war on terror. I'm sure that some on the message board will suggest that this was a inadvertant statement. I disagree. The president has loads of speech writers and each word in his speeches is carefully considered and reviewed. The primary definition of crusade is religous war, and in that context, Bush was offending about 20% of the worlds population. Certainly 20% of the world's population is not rushing to join the terrorists. However, questions about our motives will certainly make them hesitant to rush to our defense.

Another blunder of biblical proportions is the practice of "extraordinary renditions". That is our government's practice of kidnapping people off the streets of Europe, taking them to Afghanistan and torturing them. And even our govenment has acknowledged that some of the people treated this way were completely innocent and were not our enemies at all. This practice not only violates other countries laws, it also creates new enemies where there were none before.

We should go after the terrorists. However, the reckless conduct of the Bush administration has created more enemies that they have eliminated.

What we don't need in America is more religous zealots or rabble rousers who suggest that there is no place in America for other people.

TheCritic,

If you really think that the enemy is limited to 18,000 jumpin jihadi come latelys, or 'even many times higher' as you attempted to qualify your remark, then my friend, you need to take a reality immersion class.

Your comments regarding Bush and this government's "kidnapping people off the streets of Europe" shine True North light on your reason for beig on this thread. You don't give a damn about people in Europe and you don't give a damn about muslims.......You just hate Bush and jump on any opportunity to slam him and the administration. Yet, if (when) we are attacked again, you'll be one of the first to scream Bush didn't do enough.

As for your comment about "What we don't need in America is more religious zealits or rabble rousers who suggest there is no place in America for other people", I couldn't agree more. That's why we should fight the Islamification of our communities at every turn, for it is Islam that is the intollerant ideology that fuels the wa we are in. It is Islam that is the impetus for attacks on innocent civilians.

Many comments on this thread seemed to be focused on the hate or support of muslims. While the topic of Islam plays an important role in the events of our day, and THIS CASE, not many comments seem to be addressing the topic for this thread.

I don't think, for example that I've read any "Gee how about them apples" comments after fnding out that the house Ahmed Mohamed was scheduled to move into on the 7th, is connected with the USF professor who has been convicted of supporting palestinian terror groups.

I suppose it's just one more of those easily explainable co-incidences that seem to permeate this case.

Correct, we do have our own nutcases in America, and many are sitting right inside that King Street mosque and many others throughout this country preaching and plotting the demise of Western Civilization.

The statement about not having "the smarts or

However, this does not mean that REAL Americans, who are wise enough to recognize the enemy and see no need to sympathize with them, cannot dream of the total and complete annihilation of said enemy.

ONE PERSON'S OPINION, YOU JUDGE FOR YOURSELF

Can a Muslim be a Muslim-American?

Have you ever thought -- Is Muslim-American really an oxymoron? Can a devout Muslim be an American patriot and a loyal citizen?

I forwarded that question to a friend who worked in Saudi Arabia for 20 years. The following is his forwarded reply:

"Theologically, no. Because his allegiance is to Allah, the moon god of Arabia.

Religiously, no. Because no other religion is accepted by his Allah except Islam (Quran, 2:256)

Scripturally, no. Because his allegiance is to the five pillars of Islam and the Quran (Koran).

Geographically, no. Because his allegiance is to Mecca, to which he turns in prayer five times a day.

Socially, no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friends with Christians or Jews.

Politically, no. Because he must submit to the mullah (spiritual leaders), who teach annihilation of Israel and destruction of America, the great Satan.

Domestically, no. Because he is instructed to marry four women and beat and scourge his wife when she disobeys him (Quran 4:34).

Intellectually, no. Because he cannot accept the American Constitution since it is based on Biblical principles and he believes the Bible to be corrupt.

Philosophically, no. Because Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran do not allow freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or Autocratic.

Spiritually, no. Because when we declare "one nation under God," the Christian's God is loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in the Quran's 99 excellent names."

Just food for thought.

TheCritic (anonymous) says...

The allusion to World War 2 actually supports my point about the treatment of ethnic groups during war time.

Consider the Germans-Americans. Prior to Pearl Harbor there was considerable support for avoiding war with Germany. German Americans lobbied heavily against our involvement via the German American Bund. Using your logic and methods we would have jailed all these folks. However, they were recognized as loyal Americans and kept within mainstream society.

Consider the Japanese Americans: After Pearl Harbor they were confined to camps for several years. Because of the close knit Patriotic Societies it was believed that the allegiance went to Japan rather than America. Never trust a Jap was the thought process (which by the way is similar to what you advocate). However, the internment has always been recognized as a serious error which merited the award of reparations years later. There were loyal Americans who served in the 442nd combat team which was one of the most decorated units in that conflict.

Another interesting fact is that there was significant support for the Axis in South America prior to WW2. There was some concern that some of the countries might actually support the Axis if steps weren't taken. At the time it was known that Walt Disney had significant influence in South America, so he was dispatched on a diplomatic effort to sway opinion down south.

We should learn from our past mistakes and repeat the things we did right in the past. Talk like I have seen on this board will justifiably alienate Muslims and is frankly Un American. We should attempt to make allies instead of recklessly lashing out at everyone as Bush and many of the posts on this board have done. Winning the war on terror is as much about the friendships formed and reinforced as it is about the enemies defeated.

It is rumored that the Nazis made lampshades from the skin of dead Jews during WWII. Rumor or not, there is enough evidence of the Holocaust which resulted in the persecution and deaths of millions before the threat (in this case, the Nazis) was recognized by the United States along with the allied countries and later crushed into the earth.

Our present enemy, the Muslims, have and will continue perpetrating worse acts on innocents than the Nazis in the name of Allah while seeking world domination unless we deliver defeat to them on a grand scale.

Viewing or discussing the conflict between Western Civilization and the Muslims as if it were the recent result of political circumstance, current events, or indifference among present leaders instead of the Biblical battle of Good versus Evil that it truly is will only hamper the efforts of this country to prevail.

Again I ask, which side are you on?

Any analogy to WWII can not be applied to today's war on terror because we are not fighting a country or a bloc of countries. Instead we are fighting an ideology, a core belief, a fundamental cornerstone of thought. A concept that motivates followers to kill anyone who does not share that belief.

This ideology is unlike anything we have ever fought before. It is unique to Islam. Have you noticed that anywhere in the world that Islam bumps up against western style democracy, there is tension. Look at Malaysia and Indonesia or Israel, or Turkey or Lebanon where the muslims are murdering the Christian leaders one by one.

For the first time in my life I can envision a world without the United States. I see that as a possibility only if we allow these murderers to pervert our rights of freedom and defeat us from within. In essence, we are our own worst enemies.

Do not allow the likes of CAIR and these other muslim groups to intimidate us into providing them with the means to kill us because we are afraid to speak up.

"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him;
thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die."
-- Dt.13:6-10

Scripturally, no. God gives Abraham and his descendants all of the land of Canaan "forever". This promise is still used to justify the unending battles over the land in the Middle East. 13:14-15, 17:8

Socially, no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friends with Christians or Jews. They should be shunned. Neither marry nor be friends with them. "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?
and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? ... Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate,
saith the Lord." -- 2 Cor.6:14-17

Politically, no. Intolerance to diversity. For impaling the interracial couple, God rewards Phinehas and his sons with the everlasting priesthood. Numbers 25:10-13
God tells the Israelites to make slaves out of their neighbors and their families.
The "heathens" and "strangers" are to be their possessions forever. Leviticus 25:44-46
God forbids marriages with those of other tribes. Deuteronomy 7:3

Domestically, no. Matthew 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
Ephesians (5:22-24)"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife."
Wives must submit to their husbands "in every thing" as though they were Christ. "For the husband is the head of the wife."

Intellectually, no. Because he cannot accept the American Constitution since it is based on a separation of church and state by non christian men and he believes man to be corrupt.
2 Corinthians 10:5 Christians cannot be freethinkers, since all their thoughts and imaginings must be brought into captivity in obedience to Christ.

Philosophically, no. Because the old testament and the new testament do not allow freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Christianity cannot co-exist. Every christian government is either dictatorial or Autocratic. (the US is not a christian govt)
(Ephesians 1:4-5, 11)
"He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world. Having predestinated us ... according to the good pleasure of his will."
We are predestined by God to go to either heaven or hell. None of our thoughts, words, or actions can affect the final outcome.

Spiritually, no. Because when we declare "one nation under God," the Christian's God is vengeful and hateful.
2 Chronicles 19:2 Hate the sinner -- or God will pour his wrath out on you.
Psalm 58:10 The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked
John 3:36 The "wrath of God" is on all unbelievers.

I don't have time to write everything down but I am creating a website to fight christian bigotry. I have said this many times....as an atheist, I have been verbally and physically abused and even raped by a christian man only to see christians defending their illegal acts with the prodigal son story or how jesus's blood washes away every rape, child molestation and hate crime they commit. I don't have muslims, atheists, jewish people or pagan harassing me with their fantasys of torturing people or watching a spiteful god set them on fire like the christians do.

Okay, I'll watch what I say. I just feel strongly about my opinion. My brother is being sent to Qatar for the 2nd time at the end of this month-a total of 3 deployments to Afghanastan. I just want it to be over so that my brother, his friends and fellow military brothers/sisters can just stay home! This is a very emotional debate for me, so I do apologize for "over the top" comments. I don't think that "pulling" our troops out will solve the problem, and my previous opinion is the only thing I can think of to totally solve the problem. An American

You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American. So I just thought I would write to let them know what an American is, so they would know when they found one.

An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them choose.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each man and woman to the pursuit of happiness.

part 2
________

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was overrun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan. The best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes.

Americans welcome the best, but they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed.

These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers in the morning of September 11, earning a better life for their families. [I've been told that the people in the Towers were from at least 30, and maybe many more, other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.]

So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

So look around you. You may find more Americans in your land than you thought were there. One day they will rise up and overthrow the old, ignorant, tired tyrants that trouble too many lands. Then those lands, too, will join the community of free and prosperous nations.

And America will welcome them.

samadryad touche... I knew that was coming

when these bad things happen by the hands of the overseas Muslims to our non-Muslim people how does that make your people feel/act?

to just feel worried you will be discriminates against worse and get frustrated for your own well-fare or do you actually feel disgraced by a people claiming to have the same values as you and feel lots of sorrow for the families that have been harmed?

who doesn't the Muslim community come out in outrage over these things? not to "show" us anything but because you might actually really be outraged over it?

if thousands of Christians were out there plotting and killing people in the name of Jesus do you think we would just sit back and throw party's over it condoning it? do you think we would blame the people that were hurt?

of course not, we would see that justice was served to them as well... they would be stopped and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

we aren't over in Iraq or anywhere else in the name of Jesus, but rather in the name of Freedom

our country isn't even allowed to go to war over any religion whatsoever, we're lucky if we're allowed to even say what we believe without losing our jobs at some places much less go to war in the name of a God

you attack us we counter attack

you attach another small country that can't protect itself chances are pretty good we're going to help that country from becoming extinct

it isn't about religion to us, it's about a way of life

so back to my question to the other Muslims on here, are there other versions of the Quran/Koran?

I know some of the stuff in our old testament is over the top and for different dispensations, the new testament is what most go by... so yeaa people aren't supposed to still be sacrificing living things today etc

women had more rights in europe before the dark ages and women had more rights in the wild west before the puritans closed down the saloons for prohibition
muslims were more enlightened than christians centuries ago

the current muslim terrorist are simply soldiers who hate america and they have chosen to go against the USA and christianity w/o really researching the religion

You're either mis informed or you are a liar. We did not put Saddam in power, we backed him in his war with Iran.
Osama bin Laden never worked for the US government, in fact he shunned US help. He used his own funds in his foray into Afghanistan against the Soviets. We DID HELP those who were fighting ALONSIDE bin laden. In both cases, Iraq and Afghanistan, we were fighting a common enemy. The current muslim terrorists aren't soldiers at all. They are terrorists. When you learn to make the distinction maybe we can move forward. Finally, how do you connect what Jerry Falwell said about abortion to Muslims, and why don't you cite the "preachers" you allude to that are calling for attacks on Muslims.

You sound like a CAIR press release.

jammer (anonymous) says...

samadryad, first of all these aren't "our preachers" and yes many of those pretending to be preachers are false prophets as has been shown over in over as they get caught up in scandals

preaching obviously is big business to many here instead of being about the religion they are supposed to be in favor of

there are good preachers as they're are good muslims, but there's always bad apples in every tree as we all know

and yes most Americans, no matter what their religion or even if they have one at all, have read the confidential papers that were release that showed that bin laden was actually on our payroll for awhile as was saddam

but that's the case with many countries as we help them fight off persecution many times to find out later that they use our own freely given knowledge and supplies against us when they either get greedy or all of a sudden take on a new agenda

Iraq would have been taken over by Iran, we stopped that thinking we were doing good... extremist were running Iran that would kill many more people if the chance was given

sometimes things turn out to be quite different that it originally seemed due to deceit etc...

same goes for bin laden, Afghanistan would be a communist state had we not helped them... only to be turned against later

so it's not like we went in there taking anything over or doing anything we thought was wrong... just as many countries we help, after they get on their feet their leaders get greedy and turn on all, stealing from and killing those in the way

we leave after we help, we don't stay and take over the country and it's people

that's the way many of us have seen it play out

everything was done with the best intentions against what was percieved the evil at the time

History will show different.

I don't cut out articles and trying to find every hateful thing Jerry Farwell says is impossible. However, you calling me a liar will only motivate me to keep better records of everything you redneck biblethumping bigots say against women, minorities and other religions.

August 14, 2007 at 9:01 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

billyoblog (anonymous) says...

samadryad,

I have read newspaper articles that said OJ is innocent. That doesn't make them true. The fact is, one of the qualities that endears bin Laden to the Muslim world is, and always has been, his disdain for the US. Clinton's inaction was key to allowing the cancer called to Taliban to spread, however that groups rise to power was not ifinanced or installed by the US. That was another one of those great Muslim ideas. If you do your research, instead of regurgitating what jihadist apologists want you to believe, you'll find my statements to be accurate.

It's the same as trying to lay the blame for Saddam at our feet when clearly it was himself and the Batth partythat clawed and murdered their way to power in Iraq. I don't see the US trying to BLAME all the worlds problems. However, I do see the countries with problems blaming all their ills on the US, especially in the Gulf.

Had it not been for the US and Britain, the Gulf states primary export would be Camel milk. The fact that they squander the wealth infused into their coffers from oil is not our fault. The fact that their governments hide behind a perverted religion in order to keep their citizens content with a lack of basic civil rights is testament to their fear of freedom. Further, after the discovery of oil, the gulf states would be speaking German, Japanese ,or Russian had it not been for the support of the US and Britain. More recently, Iraq would have been overrun by Iran, and, even more recently, Kuwait would be part of Iraq and Saudi Arabia stood to lose their country to Saddam. So, blaming the US for the ills of that region is a hollow arguement.

There is corruption in the US. There is corruption around the world. Nobody can lay claim to perfection.

Finally, It may surprise you. but I'm not a redneck, biblethumping, biggot. You have not heard me rail against minorities, women and other religions. I am tollerant. My issues are with a religious ideology that is intollerant of everything other than itself. That is the opposite definition of a biblethumping redneck. However, you may want to direct your anger at the Quran thumping terrorists that are comfortable beating their women for infractions like not wearing a hijab or having conversations with a male outside their family than trying to label me a biggot.

As for my comment about you being either mis-informed or a liar, I thought I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. You don't have to keep clipped used newspaper articles to find the truth. All the truth you need about Islam can be gleaned from the events of September 11th, 2001.

There's your history.

ShahidWasulKamil (anonymous) says...

"Ignorance in the present can cause the past to become the future!"

Everyday I live my life hearing about the way people feel about Muslims such as myself. The way of Islam is a peacful way only coerced by the media and the true "infidels" I hear in so many posts. Those infidels are Muslim extremists and those who promote the way of Islam in a darkened light. They are not religions outside of Islam like Christianity and Judaism. We respect these religions and show reverence to the Bible and the Torah. For those who were ignorant enough to post about something they clearly do not know I challenge them! Speak your mind in public and show your ignorant faces because soon there after you will see that nobody is listening because you would sound retarded. It would be interesting to know that there are a lot more Muslims out there than you may think, and I am talking about within America, South Carolina, even in Charleston. If I were there I would address you because I am not hiding nor are my brethren.

People ask why we do not stand up? Why we do not make ourselves more visible? The answer is because we understand how the media works and realize that if we involve ourselves to a certain degree then our message may become coerced as well. Along with this, protesting goes against our core beliefs of peacfulness. In one of the earlier posts someone mentioned the WTC bombings and other incidents concerning crazed "people". I refer to them as "people" because that is who they are; the coincidence of the fact that they were Muslim means nothing. They fight for a cause that is irrational and deadly to those who are respective of peace and freedom. They are terrorists. Funny the post didn't mention the Oklahoma City bombing or the bomb at the Olympics in Atlanta, or how about the Uni-bomber, or the Washington snipers. Were they Muslim? No they were crazed "people" with irrational causes.

We leave the matters of the War in the hands of the people we elected as our representatives of freedom (senators, elected officials, the president), we support them by giving our sons and daughters to the military just as every other american does, just as I have served. Do we have reservations? Yes we do but we hold them in. Please feel rest assured that if the actions of our elected officials betray our thoughts then that would become the time for our people to speak up in mass.

Did you know? Muslims believe in "Allah" or "God" in english. He is the same "God" mentioned in the Bible and the Torah. We are charged with respecting the people of the "Book". Those are Christians, Jews, and Muslims. It would be very interesting to know that the stories in all three books bear an uncanny resemblance. They do not overlap, they speak of the same happenings. The only thing left is to learn this.

August 14, 2007 at 11:15 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

ShahidWasulKamil (anonymous) says...

I want to applaud the fact that the end of the posts became more diplomatic rather than the beginning posts. People should have the right to speak up but ignorance of issues always seems to show. Being a muslim the only thing I require is that you give a good debate of the issue with knowledge about what you are talking about. The mosque mentioned in this article is actually the one I go to. Incidentally those whom do not think I know about Christianity and the similarities to Islam would like to know that I was raised a Roman Catholic and sat in Mass in Columbia when Pope John Paul (recently deceased)came to the U.S. more than a decade ago. My studies have brought me through Catholicism to the Baptist Church then finally finding solice with Islam and the beliefs they share with the Torah and the Bible. It would also be interesting to know that clergymen usually know a lot about other religions. Especially those that have the same background as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Feel free to ask of your religious leaders and you will see the truths that belong to all of us.

ShahidWasulKamil,

Actually, the beltway snipers were muslim converts. Muhammed had joined the Nation of Islam. As for Oklahoma City, there is evidence that Terry Nichols met with Ramsey Yousef (the WTC 93 bomber) in the Phillipines and had other connections to exreme muslim groups there. Here's one of MANY sources for this info, page down until Mr. Nichols face is front and center.

http://www.cooperativesearch.org/enti...

As for the una bomber, I think all would agree he was certifiably insane, and Eric Rudolph is a criminal that got what he deserved.

I have to take issue with your defense of "moderate muslims" being silent as it supposedly goes against your religion to protest. Funny, I don't see that behavior in all the news reports of the American Flag being burned supported by chants of "Death to America" and " Death to Israel".

The anti-muslim sentiment has not been brought on by a bunch of Americans sitting around bored saying to themselves, "Gee, who should we pick on today". It has been brought on by the most vocal muslims, by the most violent muslims, and the most intollerant muslims. You may want to reconsider your "strategy" of silence against these diplomats of the devil if you want to convince people that you actually do care and you won't stand by while your religion is hijacked by thugs.

You may want to consider distanceing yourself from groups like CAIR who have been found to be supporting terror groups if you want to build credibility in your communities. Groups like that, despite their high profile stunts of running to the "aid" of "unfairly profiled muslims", aren't doing you any favors.

You may be the most peacefull person on this planet, God bless you if you are. However there comes a time when you have to speak up to preserve the peace. I believe your criticisms would be better directed at those who are detroying Islam from within.

ShahidWasulKamil (anonymous) says...

Billyoblog,

Thank you for your comments. Like peacenlove1 stated I was trying to seperate the extremist muslims from my kind. It would be interesting to note that I am filipino and note that I remember those issues. What you might not know is that it was thought that the extremists in the Philippines mentioned in the articles as well as officials involved were seeking to take blame for this. A type of street cred in the global community. Officials were bought out as is so easy to do in the provinces involved. Something that the media was able to conceal from the public, a practice that all biased media uses. Also it is not easy to get hold of explosive materials like the ones used in the OC bombing. You need a lot of pull and one way to get that is by associating with a greater cause or larger group of extremists. We could probably debate about this all day long...the point I was trying to make was that my examples are not readily associated with Islam like the examples that were mentioned earlier (WTC etc.) rather they show their true worth. Terrible acts conducted by terrible people aka terrorists. I think you are a very understanding person and very knowledgable but please do not count me or other muslims out of the picture due to our passiveness. Well educated people can recognize that diplomacy is the true means of achieving the goals we all see in our eyes. One last note, I do not belong to the group CAIR and do not understand how you made that association. If it is because they may be associated with my mosque or people within please feel rest assured that my attendance to my religious sanctum is strictly that, a way for me to practice my devotion. If you get out of the mindset that you can simply associate me with other islamic groups like you just did then maybe you will finally understand what I am getting at.

I was poking a little sarcasm at how one can read one thing (like in his post) and automatically relate it to something without understanding the point the person was making. Kudos to your diplomacy.

billyoblog (anonymous) says...

ShahidWasulKamil,

Thank you for your response and please accept my apology if you believed that I had attempted to associate you personally with CAIR. It was a generalization meant to convey my belief that muslims like yourself should play a more active role in denouncing groups like that. CAIR has actually been following what has been posted on this thread and others over the last few days and are using selected comments to support their arguement that muslims are being unfairly discriminated against. All of the data shows that most muslims don't support CAIR. It is their belief(most muslms), as you stated, that they (CAIR)don't speak for them. However, silence can be your worst enemy if you let groups like that go unchallenged. They are more insideous but just as dangerous operatives in the 'global jihad', a jihad once again reinforced today by the Iranian madman Ahmadinejad. (It's all over the web today)

As for Terry Nichols. There is more to the Phillipines connection than what was described in the link I posted. However, I don't think the events described can be written off to some form of local bravado. There were cell phones used by McVeigh's and Nichols' cohort in Arizona that have been tied to Nichols' trips abroad and, lest we not forget the similarity between the boms used in the WTC and Oklahoma City. Those ingredients although used in the WTC 93 attack, were NOT a favorite recipe for Ramsey in the Philipines. He had other concoctions that he worked out when he planted the bomb on the 747 that killed a Japanese business man and had another idea for assasinating the Pope.

In closing, I can imagine the frustration you must feel daily. You sound sincere and it's unfortunate that so many on both sides don't take the time to dig into things a little deeper before they spout off. However, It is my belief the muslim community NEEDS to vehemantly articulate their objections to the militant strains of Islam. Silence will beget suspicion or worse. In the American concience, it was Islam that fired the first shots in this war. We can start our clocks at whatever time in history you want to argue the point, but the fact remains most Americans fear muslims. Unless something changes, nothing will change.

Unfortunately I must admit billyoblog is correct when it comes to my speaking out. I share this thought daily and treat it as my personal jihad. Jihad meaning my inner war or turmoil. Being filipino I have had to face indifferences like this on many occasions. Being called racial terms like ch*nk or g**k. It does comfort me when there can be some diplomacy and a middle ground can be reached. I am more than confident that the issues today will come to a middle ground...however when are we (the people of the world) going to accept that diplomacy is the ultimate answer so we can finally bypass the hate and bloodshed. The quicker we get to that point, the quicker we move onto the next issue at hand.

part 1
______

Paul L. Williams, Ph.D.

Paul L. Williams is author of "The Day of Islam"

The Islamic practice of taqiyya, meaning "deception" or "concealment," has been refined into an art-form at a jihad training compound for African American converts near the small town of Red House in Charlotte County, Virginia. The fifty-acre compound is easy to find since the main road leading to it has been named Sheikh Gilani Lane in honor of the guru and founder of a terrorist organization with close ties to Osama bin Laden. The Board of Supervisors of Charlotte Country are either oblivious to the threat of radical Islam on American soil or clandestine advocates of the great jihad. At the end Sheikh Gilani Lane is a sign - - barely visible through the overgrown brush - - that reads, "The Muslims of the Americas." The sign serves to make the place appear as an innocuous religious settlement, until one realizes that The Muslims of the Americas is, in reality, an outgrowth of Jamaat ul-Fuqra, an alleged sister agency to al-Qaeda.

Several weeks before 9/11, a guard house and a gate had been erected at the entrance to the Red House compound. But the guard house and the gate are now gone, and no sentries - - armed or otherwise - - are in sight, that is until you get well inside the complex of old trailers and pre-fab shanties. The only person to be seen in the the compound is an African American crone in a full black burqa sans the face cover known as a hijab. The day is hot and humid and the burqa serves to give the wizened old woman the appearance of a wayside witch from a Grimm's fairy tale. "The men are all gone," the crone says from a park bench. "No one is here."

The Red House compound certainly appears deserted. A few mobile homes, several rusty old trailers, and a few mounds of debris among waist-high weeds remain along an old dirt road that runs through the Islamic village, but there appears to be little of interest, let alone concern. As soon as the investigators park their car and trek into compound, the old woman removes a mobile phone from a sachet and dials a number. In a matter of minutes, a pick-up truck appears at the entranceway. Two young African Americans dressed in skull caps and jalabiyahs emerge from the vehicle. "What are you doing here?" they ask.

part 2
_______

Jamal, an Egyptian journalist, says in Arabic, "I'm here to see the Imam. Where does he live?"

One of the young men, whose Arabic name translates as "Slave of God", indicates that the Imam is not in and he should knock on the door of a ramshackle blue structure where he was told "Ahmed", one of the Elders may be found. Jamal proceeds to the structure and rings the bell, but no one answers. Another member of our investigative team knocks at the doors of the trailers and mobile homes but there is no response. Some of the windows to the homes have been holed up with bricks save for openings that are ideal for assault rifles...."This is not a place for tourists," screeches the woman in the Imam's house, "and we don't like you taking pictures of our houses and automobiles."

By this time, the Red House compound is swarming with hundreds of Muslim men, women, and children - - and several appear to be deeply agitated by the intruders. Jamal produces a card from a radical imam he had met the day before at the radical Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church. It serves as a ticket out of the place.

Is the complex amidst the rolling hills of southern Virginia a peaceful Islamic village where devout Muslims have gathered to retreat from the hustle and bustle of contemporary American life in order to pray, meditate, and to live in strict accordance with the traditions of their faith? Or is it something more sinister - - something that should alarm every American who is concerned about the threat of radical Islam?

These factors are clear: (1). There is an underground bunker at the complex that may be used for paramilitary training and possibly to harbor deadly weapons for use in the great jihad against Christians and Jews. Twenty-four members of this Jamaat ul-Fuqra complex already have been arrested for trafficking in illegal firearms, including the ammunition for AK-47s; (2). Members of the compound have been sent to Pakistan and Afghanistan for specialized training in guerilla warfare - - a fact confirmed by Thomas P. Gallagher, a Special Agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; (3). The Red House compound regularly receives visits from suspicious guests from Egypt, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan; (4). The Red House cell of ul-Fuqra has metastasized so that similar Islamic compounds have popped up in neighboring Prince George and Campbell Counties. The 25 acre facility in Prince George County is situated on Mahareen Road, a name selected by the Muslim newcomers and duly approved by the local ordinance officials. Mahareen is the plural of the Arabic mahar, meaning "clever one." The facility in Campbell County is considerably larger, occupying more than 100 acres. An additional compound reportedly has materialized in Bedford County near the city of Roanoke; (5). Several Virginia compounds appear to possess obstacle courses, and firing ranges; ...

_________

The Muslims of the Americas, the tax-exempt corporation which owns and operates the Red House compound, was formed in 1980 by Pakistani cleric Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani. It is, according to an official report, a "front organization" for terrorist activities. A 2005 Homeland Security report predicts that the Muslims of the Americas will sponsor a major terrorist attack on American soil. The parent organization of The Muslims of the Americas is Jamaat ul-Fuqra or "community of the impoverished" which retains headquarters in Lahore, Pakistan..... Gilani soon came to the realization that it would be financially advantageous to train new recruits for the holy war on American soil rather than to pay the freight of sending them to Pakistan, and the sites of his other training camps throughout the world. And so, Islamberg in Hancock, New York came into being. Soon other hamaats were established in such places as Hyattsville, Maryland; Falls Church, Virginia; Macon, Georgia; York, South Carolina; Dover, Tennessee; Buena Vista, Colorado; Talihina, Oklahoma; Tulane Country, California; Commerce, California; and Onalaska, Washington. The Red House compound cropped up in 1993. Others are under construction, including an expansive facility in Sherman, Pennsylvania. How many hamaats are now in place throughout the United States is anyone's guess. A low-ball figure is 38.

Before becoming a citizen of the Red House compound or any of the other Fuqra communities, the recruits - - primarily inner city black men who became converts in prison - - are compelled to sign an oath that reads: "I shall always hear and obey, and whenever given the command, I shall readily fight for Allah's sake." They are also obliged to contribute 70% of their welfare checks and other sources of income to Muslims of the Americas, Inc.

part 4
________

Mission accomplished among the African Americans, Sheikh Gilani returned to his native Lahore circa 1990. In December 1993, he was an honored guest at an international gathering of jihadis at the residence of Hassan al-Turabi in Khartoum. At the gathering, attended by members of al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Popular and Democratic Fronts for the Liberation of Palestine, Sheikh Gilani, Osama bin Laden, and other prominent terrorist leaders were caught on film chanting, "Down, down with the USA!" "Down, down with the CIA," and "Death to the Jews."

Over the years, numerous members of Jamaat ul-Fuqra have been convicted in US courts of such crimes as conspiracy to commit murder, firebombing, gun smuggling, and workers' compensation fraud. Others remain leading suspects in criminal cases throughout the country, including ten unsolved assassinations and seventeen fire-bombings between 1979 and 1990. Associates of the group were also instrumental in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center...

The criminal charges against the group and the criminal convictions are not things of the past. In 2001, a 19 year-old former resident of the Red House compound a California compound was charged with the first-degree murder in the shooting of a sheriff's deputy in California. By 2004 federal investigators uncovered evidence that linked both the DC "sniper killer" John Allen Muhammed and "Shoe Bomber" Richard Reid to the group and reports surfaced that Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was captured and beheaded in the process of attempting to obtain an interview with Sheikh Gilani in Pakistan.

Even though Jamaat ul-Fuqra has been involved in bloody bombings and sundry criminal activities, recruited thousands of members from federal and state penal systems, and appears to be operating paramilitary facilities for militant Muslims, the terror organization remains to be placed on the official US Terror Watch List, and The Muslims of the Americas continue to operate, flourish, and expand as a legitimate nonprofit, tax-deductible charity. Meanwhile, the hills of rural Virginia are alive with the sound of jihad.

watching these things happen in mass obviously makes us a little skeptical, not scared as someone said, but definitely skeptical of what is and isn't the truth even as we are being told it

it will take the muslims not associated with this kind of extremism to come out against it to prove to all other races and religions that you are not against our country and our people

I know you said your religion doesn't teach you to do that but times are changing and so must the responses, or there will be a lot of innocent good people caught up in a bad situation that could cost them dearly once these radicals start showing their true intentions

samadryad you said "if you were in the area" you wouldn't hide behind a PC and you would come talk face to face

no one here is hiding my friend, I'll meet anyone anytime anywhere within my schedule that wishes to debate this
or clear things up face to face

the only thing that's ever scared me was me, and I'm just as blunt face to face as I am here as people who know me will attest...

and am more than willing to have anyone ask me questions just as bluntly, this is a learning experience for me so there's nothing to hide... if you can't handle being asked tough questions then stay off the keyboard and stay on your porch

but I think most questions have been addressed

the largest being how do we native American's know for sure that you're really here to be a part of us, not apart from us... and are on our side?

and yes I'm a redneck, that's a good thing down here in the south... only yankee's think it's an insult... lol

we know we have muslim cells here waiting for the word to act to harm so you must understand that weeding them out is our first priority, and that means you muslims will be checked and double checked by all until the bad one's are identified and removed

our government won't remove them until after they've done something, so we the people - which includes you if you are true to your words, will ultimately be left to clean this mess up

jammer,

Thank you for your time in re posting these stories. I have been aware of them and have commented on the 'islamburg' project on several sites for a few years now. It's just one of those little "inconvenient truths" that keep getting in the way of CAIR's PR campaign. "Pay no attention to the men behind the curtain".

Sadly, it's not moderate muslims spilling the beans on these groups. Is fear of retribution the motivating factor for their silence? They seem content with their existence. Nor do the moderates speak out or up when terror plots are hatched from within their own mosques themselves. Al Farooq in Brooklyn comes to mind. Silence costs lives. How does a jr. high school student predict the destruction of the WTC within a week? Now, we have to take each statement like that seriously.

Moderate Muslims just don't realize that they are one more spectacular attack away from being interned in this country. The attack won't destroy us. It will indiscriminately kill and maime, but it won't destroy us. It will however, probably destroy any hope any moderate muslim has of living in peace without suspicion in this country. That should be their over-riding fear. Unless of course, living in peace is not high on the priority list.

First, the DC snipers were Muslim converts and since I was a cop working on that case I know of what I speak. They were arrested less than 5 miles from my house.

Secondly, the god of the muslims is NOT the God of the bible.

I have no problem with peaceful muslims but until we see you working with us to stop terrorsts and show a willingess to contribute to our culture instead of demanding specail consideration, I am afraid you will not find much support.

Trinitytim,

You should learn to read the other comments especially about the snipers. This is known but the point was made that acts of terrorism like that are not readily associated to with Islam rather they are associated with their act; the act of terrorism. World Trade Center and other reference carry the negative connotation of muslim extremists. As far as your "God" goes unless you are a practicing scientologist then it is a given fact that "God", "Yahweh"(not sure if I misspelled this), and "Allah" are all the same being. Translated in different languages. The only major differences between Islam and Christianity are the viewpoints on Jesus Christ. Christians view him as the son of God and Muslims view him as one of the prophets of God. In all respect he was still a great person gifted with many abilities. This runs along the lines of the debate between Baptists and Catholics. Is there or is there not a Holy Trinity? Oops you might not know about that due to your lack of knowledge. As far as being a cop, I applaud that, however I must show some reservations because I gather a slight bit of ignorance on your part. The only thing I could do is request that you talk to your priest or your preacher and review what you should have learned in sunday school. I am sure that they would have answers for you. Please remember that behind Christianity/Catholicism, Islam is the next biggest religion in the world. That is a fact. Also I would suggest that you start asking around, you would be surprised at who you would find out to be muslim. We just do not broadcast it. Here is a note: Caucasians are not the majority in the global community asians are. Why did I say that? The world is a big place, you need to open up your eyes and learn, then think before you speak.
