Yousef Megahed (center), 21, and Ahmed Mohamed (right), either 24 or 26 according to arrest records, were charged Monday with possession of an explosive device.

Prosecutor says Egyptian students had pipe bombs in car

MONCKS CORNER — Two Florida students accused of having pipe bombs in the trunk of their car when they were pulled over in Goose Creek are "confused and scared," their attorney said Monday.

Yousseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 26, both Egyptian citizens, were calm and polite in Berkeley County bond court. They were charged Monday with carrying explosive devices, which is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

The weekend arrest drew national attention, because the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants are held, and the Naval Weapons Station are nearby. An FBI spokesman said the two are not suspected of being part of a terrorist plot.

The leader of a Muslim advocacy group who has been talking with Megahed's family said the two were heading to North Carolina to celebrate Mohamed's birthday, which was Sunday.

"Family members are very concerned, shocked about what has developed," said Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The contents of the trunk might have been part of the celebration, he said.

Mohamed asked for a chance to speak at Monday's bond hearing and said he was carrying fireworks in the trunk. Magistrate Ava Bryant Ayers reminded him that the bond hearing was to determine whether they were flight risks and not to talk about details of the charges.

Ayers set a $300,000 bond for Megahed and $500,000 for Mohamed. Solicitor Scarlett Wilson argued that the two were flight risks. A hearing on the charges is scheduled for Oct. 5.

An affidavit from the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said officers from the bomb squad determined that pipe bombs were in the trunk. Pipe bombs are homemade explosives, and making or having them is a felony.

Mohamed told the arresting officer he used materials he bought at a Wal-Mart, according to the affidavit.

The two were pulled over about 5:30 p.m. Saturday near U.S. Highway 176 and Myers Road in Goose Creek. Their attorney, Dennis Rhoad of Charleston, said he had not had a chance to ask them why they were in Goose Creek.

Rhoad said the pair understands the seriousness of the charges and that they are "confused and scared. ... They take the charges seriously."

A Berkeley County deputy said he pulled over the 2000 Toyota Camry for going more than 60 mph in a 45 mph zone. Megahed was driving. Mohamed was using a laptop computer in the passenger's seat and closed it when a deputy approached, Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said.

The deputy asked to search the car, and the two consented, DeWitt said. When the deputy asked if there was anything in the car he should be aware of, the men said there were fireworks in the trunk, DeWitt said.

The laptop, along with everything else seized from the car, was handed over to the FBI for processing, DeWitt said, declining to elaborate on what they seized or the specific materials found in the trunk.

The FBI also wasn't saying anything definite about what they found. "Right now, we're still in the investigative stages," said Denise Taiste, an FBI spokeswoman in Columbia.

Both men are students at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Megahed told the court he's a full-time student working on a degree in mechanical engineering. He said he is a native of Egypt, has been in the United States for four years, is a legal resident and recently applied for American citizenship. He said his parents and brother and sister live in Tampa. He said he has been working at a mental health clinic while in school since the first of July. Before that, he worked at a Chevy car dealership and a Jiffy Lube, he said.

Mohamed said he also is an Egyptian citizen who has been in the United States since January. He said he is a teaching assistant at the university while working on his doctorate in civil engineering. He has no relatives in the United States, he said.

The P & C has screwed up here. Why did they break the discussion thread for what is obviously a multiday story. This needs to be corrected.

While innocent until proven guilty, these people are no less subject to our legal system than any US citizen. They will be afforded due process and Mr. Rhoad's reputation is well known. As for the preponderance of the evidence, it would seem that every American would demand that if these people actually had "explosives" in their possession, they should be treated as "terrorists" at the very least. People of middle eastern decent are going to be scrutinized because of the acts of terroism against the US in the last decade. 9/11 was just the "straw the broke the camels back" where the US was concerned, since there had been many other attacks previously. I firmly believe that the "terrorists", what ever their country of origin, are actively planning the time when they will catch us with our pants down and spank us! We must be ever vigilant.

If these were white kids, from say Mt. Pleasant, would all this really be going on? All the national attention? Negative. It's due to these men's skin color and ethnicity that they are being treated like this. Boy if only there were an organization like the NAACP for Middle Easterners. I could only imagine.

I wonder what type of explosives where used in these "pipe bombs". Was it some kind of home brew such as black powder or some other nitrate based mix, which is easy to make with generally available materials or some modern explosive, like plastic explosives which require detonators, which are not so easy to get. I guess we will never know.

Did they say anything yesterday about these guys being Egyptian? I personally know an Egyptian family that have been U.S. citizens for 30 yrs. They are of the Egyptian Orthodox religion. They love this country and were just as upset about 9/11 as any of us. I would never group this family in the same class as a bunch of raghead terrorists. So, what's up with these two? Fireworks turn into pipe bombs and a $800,000 bond? They don't sound like peaceful, naive students to me.

These two are being scrutinized unfairly because of their ethnicity. Remember the boys on James Island a while back that were in possession of the pipe bombs, they didn't go through anything like this.

Remember that in this country, you are innocent until proven guilty - not the other way around. Unfortunately many in our community have all ready condemned these men. At this point, all these men are are two naive college students - not terrorists.

Well, whatever they are....amateur terrorists or idiots, it sucks to be them. SC is not a good place for a man of Middle Eastern descent to be caught w/ a pipe bomb because they may face swifter justice at the hands of fellow inmates than in the court system. Ironically, these idiots are right down the street so I'm sure the media circus will be slowing down my comute for the next several months, so I guess it sucks to be me too.

One thing I'll say....they're pretty darn brazen to smile for their mugshots, which makes me think there may be something to this small time terrorism theory. That or they trully are idiots. Not a way I'd want to spend my 15 minutes of fame.

If all of you are so psychic and you have all the facts, would one of you please list EXACTLY what they found in the trunk?

Didn't think so!

Before you go and convict these guys it is my OPINION that in the end you will find that these so-called "bombs" were made out of PVC pipe (Homemade M80s). Or better yet you will find out they were modifying store bought fireworks to get a bigger bang.

For you people that engage your mouth and think later, First if there was any "terror link" the FBI would not have turned everything back over to the "local yokels".

Second, if the had been ant true pipe bombs found (the type made from galvanized pipe and caps) the FBI would have turned it over to the BATF and they would be prosecuting these guys.

What really happened? I don't know but here's my OPINION. Routine speeding, cop sees some homemade M80s made from 1/2" or 1" PVC then it all goes downhill from there. Here's a chance for the "Bomb Squad" to shut down the road and "play with their robot". They call the FBI and after checking it out the FBI says "Why are you guys calling us? You guys can handle Cherry Bombs." Now no one wants to look like a fool and the media whips up that Charleston is under a terrorist attack.

Sad thing is, you all play into their hands. Wise up, ask your law enforcement what exactly was in the trunk!

One last thing, remember when the "bomb squad" shut down I-526 when a weather instrument landed on top of a container at the port? See what happened in this case and everytime the word "Bomb" is used? Ask yourself how many "Bombs" have gone off in Charleston Area over the past 30 years and how many people have died? Now ask yourself how many murders we had in the tri-county area in 2006? Maybe we should be spending more towards the murder rate and less towards the "robots".

Ok, What a lot of people are overlooking is this - If you were driving from Tampa (where I use to live) to North Carolina, why would you be driving in Goose Creek on 176? You would drive one of several ways out of Tampa, which would eventually put you on 95. Even if you wanted to go to say Wilmington NC - one of the most southern cities on the NC coast, you would stay on 95 until at least Florence if you were going to go into NC via Myrtle Beach. Once AAA routed a family member from Florida to Camp LeJeune NC to drive up 17 along the coast all through SC and then NC until arriving at Camp LeJeune, even if they decided to do that, 176 is a long way from 17 in Mt Pleasant.

Did anyone see these pieces last night on the news laughing it up in the court room, then act shocked when the judge didn't let them walk out? People like these two make me "scared and confused". I don't want these two near our Navy base with bomb making material. Also, did anyone see the search of the house that was filled with computers? I believe this was a foiled terror plot.

I don't think these men are being "scrutinized because of their ethnicity", they should know better. Why else would they have bomb making materials in their car? Their organization is Al Quaida, whites have the KKK just like there is the NAACP-all the same thing. These are not normal upstanding American citizens like most of the people around here. Wasn't Padilla a citizen? Navyblueblood, I'm totally with you on this one.

I'm glad I wouldn't ever put my kids through a terrorist attack because society says it's wrong to be prejudice. Father of three sure acts like he knows all about this and I think he's involved. I don't respect killers (or those who attempt). Bombs haven't went off in the past 30 years because we've done a good job at keeping the terrorists over there and because of good little incidents like this one-busting these two pieces. Father of three, why do you care so much about these two pieces? How about you ask what was in the trunk and show the law your knowledge of bomb making...maybe they could use you since these two pieces are "innocent" in your eyes because you know them so well.

And I can't remember his name now, but USF had one of their Engineer Prof's arrested for running a group connected to Hamas - he was also one of the leaders of the local mosque in Tampa. These got caught with something they should not have had, they will be given a fair trail and if convicted they will be punished. Now if through investigation sometihng is found that links them to terroist's then they should be treated as such. Right now they are just somebody who screwed up.

As for people of middle eastern decent getting more attention than other people, of course we are at war with them. This PC crap has got to end, but at the same time we can not convict everyone from the Middle East as terrorist, they just need to be checked better than most. It a fact of life when your country is at war. I have nothing against them unless they intend to harm me, or my country, but at the same time I have enough sense to know that becaus eof thier back ground there is a high chance of them wishinng harm and they need to be checked. I am not saying round them up and put them in camps, but do through background checks. If they are clean then they are welcome, if not then they are sabotures during a time of war and should be treated as such.

Terrorist are a cult VERSION of the islamic religion, and they will stop at nothing to achieve thier sick and demented goals. I am not saying the Islam as a whole is sick, just the terrorist vision of it.

Check out the 5 dancing Israeli story filming the collapse of WTC towers first reported on Fox News in late 2001. There have been quite a number of events like this over the past several years. Often it turns out to be Mossad agents attempting to create another false flag event like the USS Liberty etc. There is lot to this story that does not hold together. Is it fireworks or a pipe bomb? Why didn't the police have a chance to ask why they were there? Could this be part of the cover story for the upcoming bombing of DC which the rule elite has been planning for years???

This is such an unfortunate circumstance we as Americans have to somehow resolve. I hope there is a thorough investigation of the laptop and all the other evidence gathered because it would be a shame for any more tragedy at the hands of over zealous Islamic. As a person trying to see the big picture, I must point this out as well. It would also be a tragedy if these boys are innocent but convicted of this serious crime due to their circumstance of being Egyptian. Let's not look at this thing in a vacuum. What many seem to ignore is that you can't look at the last 10 years of world history and say to your self why do some brown people have a problem with this country's and countries like ours foreign policy. What I wish you all would do is take an unbiased look at history from various points of views of the Abrahamic religions starting at its inception; this would require a lesson in not only Middle Eastern history but the history of Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan and neighboring countries. These people are all very closely related ironically and fight like brothers and sisters. This angle has been exploited for hundreds of years. (Seldom mentioned fact, Eurocentric governments supported Muslims in the overthrowing of a Jewish run Ethiopia hundreds of years ago. Now the Muslim descendants are the enemy. This is also known as Karma to some people. This seems to be a common problem or scenario that repeats itself throughout history with Eurocentric countries supporting any regime that supports the agenda at hand which generally seems to be the exploitation of other countries. This makes many rich initially but it also disenfranchises many people) Study colonialism with an unbiased heart and try to follow the dollar as the politicians say and you will realized that the brown people of the world feel that they have received the short end of the stick one too many times. You will also realize that our foreign policy workings since this country has existed are more complicated than a Shakespearean plot, far more complicated than anyone could explain in this commentary, but certainly lead by the all mighty dollar that pimps the world for the benefit of only a few. I just hope we can fix this before it is too late. We must look the truth in the eye and change otherwise who knows what the future will hold. The US will be just another dominate culture among the long list of those that have come and gone before it with the Wealthy Minority living to pimp another day.

the damage wouldn't be caused by the small pipe bombs but rather by the mix of other things that can really do a very large amount of damage anywhere one chooses

I'm guessing the excuse for the closed laptop will be they were wifi mapquesting to wallyworld and got turned around, that's how they ended up at a wallyworld way out of the way

on the other side of the coin, as peacenlove1 would mention, "rednecks" have been making small explosives like this for decades to go out in the woods and see how high they can blow an old log or something just for fun

so was this just some kids going astray or were they really up to something? the big flag that gets raised from me is the CAIR people stepping in to try to "protect" them

CAIR as we all know has been implicated in funding terrorism over seas several times, Hamas etc... that really makes one stop and think

BOTTOM LINE IS...

EVERYONE should find out if this is a case of a dangerous crime being committed or if it's a few local authorities over reacting.

AND NO ONE has answered my original question of what EXACTLY was in the trunk... because none of you know.

I BELIEVE in Racial Profiling, you don't make the 80 year little white, black, pink or purple old woman take her shoes off at the airport. IF these two guys can be found guilty of wanting to kill American Citizens with their "pipe bombs", I would be the first in line to volunteer to pull the switch on them.

But if you have put your law enforcement officers in a place so high that you don't think they can't overreact... I just point to our infamous Goose Creek PD and how they treated 15, 16 & 17 year old children at one of our local high schools with gun drawn. The end does not always jusify the means.

And yes I do know a little about explosive devices, I have them in my home... better known as shotgun shells, firecrackers, propane and gasoline tanks.

And thanks to the ignorant posters who do not even know who I am and are now say "I" must be involved, your posts make my point of how out of control this knee-jerk reaction has become.

There are alot of unanswered questions that we don't know. I believe that I read in the paper that they were headed to the beach??? However, Goose Creek is not close to the beaches in Charleston, but the Naval Brig is. If they lived in Florida, why come to Charleston to celebrate at the beach? Florida beaches are far better than SC beaches, one would think. It was stated in the paper that they said they had "fireworks". Fireworks are prohibited at the beach. It was also stated that these boys were naive. For one thing, they are not boys, they are grown men. It doesn't matter what race, creed, religion they are. What they did looks suspicious in this day and time. The whole world seems to be going in the direction of not having to face up to any wrong doings. Some kind of excuse is always the way to get around owning up to your own responsibility as a human being. The bible teaches us otherwise, yet the bible and God are continuously being taken out of society for fear that you will step on someone's toes. Why don't we just get rid of all laws, give these "boys" their "toys" back and go on with life. Is that where we are headed today???? People just don't get the whole picture of what is happening in our world today. You better get on the right path, or you will regret it some day.

Lets go over the real facts again, for those who haven't had their coffee yet.

The REAL FACTS ARE:

1. They DID have pipe bombs
2. It's not a terrorist plot, as in they don't appear to have a stretegic plan in place which shows they have premeditated bombing someone or something as a terrorist act. They may have had a personal motive to do something but we may never find out. People don't make pipe bombs and transport them across state lines for no reason. They were up to SOMETHING.
3. Muhamed is a liar, and knows darn well what he had in the trunk but in an effort to create the appearance of innocence he is going to claim they were fireworks.

They WILL be sentenced, folks !! Pipe bombs are illegal, which is why they were charged with felony posession. And for anyone who has a problem with the cops using robots to investigate the trunk, why don't you volunteer to go detonate the bombs next time around.

Use your brains folks and quit digging for more dirt. The facts are clear as day to those who don't have their eyes closed.

I just wish the the American public would demand the treatment of the symptoms of terrorism as well as our diseased foreign policy that is dictated by the agenda of the wealthy since this country has existed.. Why should all suffer for an agendas that only truely supports the wealthy? How have we benifited from the UNs actions in the 50's? Who can even begin to sort out what land over there belongs to whom, certainly not a country that did not even exists a fraction of the time that there has been land disputes in the Middle East. Think about it.. These decisions have not made very many friends over there but have made a small minority of people rich. Fix our foreign policy from being dictated by lobbyists and those with money and the other issues will resolve themselves over time.

I know a hell of a lot more about explosives proven by the tripe and lack of common sense that's been posted here.

First and foremost... The FBI would NOT have turned this case back over to the local sheriff IF they could have gotten ANYTHING from this story. This would have been a national story with non-stop coverage if the FBI or Homeland Security could have shown how they thwarted another terrorist attempt! They would have been all over this like lawyers at a car wreck.

Second... IF this was a true "Pipe Bomb" the BATF would have these two men in custody RIGHT NOW. They would NOT be sitting in Berkeley County.

Third... If I take the guts from a sky rocket, seal it in a PVC pipe from Lowes THATS A PIPE BOMB! BUT... your'e NOT going to blow up the Navel Weapons Station with something like that.

father_of_3--gasoline and propane are not explosives. Gasoline is a flammable liquid and propane is a compressed flammable gas. Small arms ammunition is considered a small explosive, howver.

Pipe bombs can be used as an igniter or ignition source for a larger device.

Wal-Mart does not sell traditional explosives (i.e. TNT, .etc) but there are a bunch of other chemicals that can be combined to make a bomb. They could have bought the stuff at Wal-Mart here, enroute to North Carolina for testing. It's possible

MIAMI - The defense rested its case Tuesday in the trial of Jose Padilla and two other men charged with supporting terrorism, with Padilla's lawyers calling no witnesses or putting on any evidence.

The defense action, coming on day 53 of the trial, clears the way for prosecutors to put on rebuttal witnesses in advance of closing arguments next week from both sides. Jurors could begin deliberations next week as well.

Padilla, 36, is accused along with Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi, both 45, of participating in a support network for Islamic extremist groups around the world. They face life in prison if convicted on all charges.

Padilla, a U.S. citizen, was held for 3 1/2 years as an enemy combatant after his 2002 arrest on suspicion of plotting with Al-Qaeda to blow up a radioactive "dirty bomb" in a major U.S. city. Those allegations are not part of the Miami case, to which Padilla was added in late 2005 amid a legal clash over President Bush's authority to continue holding him without charge.

The main piece of evidence against Padilla is a "mujahedeen data form" prosecutors say he filled out in 2000 to attend an Al-Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan. The form, found in late 2001 by the CIA along with dozens of others, bears Padilla's fingerprints, the government says.

However, Padilla's voice is barely heard on the thousands of FBI wiretap intercepts collected during an investigation of Hassoun, Jayyousi and others from 1993 to 2001. Prosecutors say those intercepts show a conspiracy among the men to assist Al-Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups in places like Chechnya, Bosnia, Afghanistan, Somalia and Lebanon.

The ultimate goal, according to the prosecution, was to use violence to establish governments following a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

The defense countered that the aim was to provide humanitarian assistance to oppressed and persecuted Muslims in these conflict zones, or at most to help legitimate fighters defend against invading military forces. Defense lawyers also say prosecutors have failed to link their clients directly to any specific acts of violence.

Although Padilla is the star defendant, his involvement in the conspiracy prosecutors have described appeared to be minimal. His lawyers say he decided to move to Egypt and travel to Pakistan in the late 1990s to further his studies of Arabic and Islam with the intent of becoming an imam.

U.S. officials say Padilla admitted a much deeper involvement with Al-Qaeda - including exploring the "dirty bomb" plot - during his incarceration in a Navy brig in Charleston, S.C. But none of that evidence could be used at trial because he was interrogated without being advised of his legal rights and because he had no access to a lawyer.

Hey Chili,

First I said "explosive devices" and if you don't think a tank of propane or a can of gas is an explosive device then you just don't know much about air-fuel bombs and getting the ratio just right.

I actually started laughing when you referred to small arms ammunition as a "small explosive". The definition between small and large is a relative subject.

No one who knows squat about explosives is going to use a pipe bomb to detonate a "larger device". First off you you need detonation for for your "large device" and NOT an "igniter" or "ignition source".

While it's technically possible to build a homemade bomb, when you start messing around with aluminum powder, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethlene and the like, most people end up wishing they had never touched the stuff!

Oh, one final question... when did Wally World stop selling Trinitrotoluene (TNT) and other "traditional" explosives? Man, I am so bummed!

Naked Yoga,

Rush to judgement?????? Huh..? Let's review. Two middle eastern men in their 20's (sorry for the profile, after 3000 Americans were slaughtered it's kind of second nature) decide their going to take a 'road trip'. Now these guys are supposedly educated fellows, engineers in fact, at a prestigious University. Some how they figure a trip from Tampa to North Carolina and back will cost them 30-40 dollars in gas. Is math a prerequisite for engineering students? So these fellows embark on their 'cost-concious' journey on their way to North Carolina but somehow find themselves way off the beaten path, a LONG way from 95 but real close to a Navy Installation, and an International Airport, and an Air Force Facility, oh and a Brig that houses enemy combatants.
So these wild and crazy guys are oblivious to their flawed navigation, otherwise they'd have said to the officers, "We're lost", instead of not being able to explain WHY or WHAT they were doing in the area.

Now these same two carefree fellows have some stuff in the trunk, some say a bomb, some say explosives, some say fireworks, some say ingredients for fireworks. I'm not a cop, but I bet I'd tell the difference between a bottle rocket and an IED, or the materials for one. But lets just say, for arguements sake, they were fireworks. We KNOW they weren't your traditional fireworks. We KNOW they were homemade, something ENTIRELY unneccasary in the state of South Carolina since fireworks there are LEGAL. It is also my understanding that they had containers of gas in the trunk, per Mr. Bedier, their prompt apologist from CAIR. Did I mention these fellows were engineering students? Hey, that reminds me, wasn't Mohammed Atta into engineering? Naked Yoga, we live in a world where we HAVE to assume the worst. Frankly, this story, at least for me has feathers, quacks, and waddles. The smart money is that it's a duck.

Father of 3, thank you. That's exactly the way I feel. The "evidence" (if you can call it that) that we are hearing from the media seems to point that these guys were doing something very out of the ordinary. But then again, this is from minor media outlets, and this story is only a a couple of days old. I agree that it really looks like these guys were up to something. But there is no one among us who knows the full story yet. Let the American justice system operate. These guys are in custody; they're not going anywhere. We shouldn't let the fact that these guys are Muslim wash over their right to due process of law. And yes, I know there are other reasons besides their faith that got them arrested, but the knee-jerk reaction is still there.

I'm not a jihadist apologist, but one of the things that makes the United States great is our constitutional system of justice.

Prior to the court appearance that everyone has seen, Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said "there is a possibility the items were just fireworks" You can read the quote at TV4's website here:
http://www.wcbd.com/midatlantic/cbd/n...

Now the solicitor is calling them "Pipe Bombs". So much for the earlier argument that the officer (and Sheriff) surely knows the difference between fireworks and "something else". Doesn't seem that clear now does it. If it was so damn clear, why didn't they come right out and say they found "Pipe Bombs".

Facts are important, there is a HUGE difference between illegal fireworks and illegal Pipe Bombs.

Mabe these guys were WORKING for the FEDS trying to infiltrate a cell and the local police upset the apple cart.

OK, here are some facts to back up what I have been saying from the start.
If you go to the Tampa Bay (where these guys are from) Online Website( www.tbo.com ) and look up the local TV8 (WFLA) story you can watch the video of their coverage. At the end (2:50 of 3:11 minutes) you can listen to the direct quote I refer to below.

The following is a direct link to the video:
http://tbo.com/video/xml/MGBPAILH15F....

Here is the direct quote from the news video:
"An FBI Spokesman was quoted as saying "That the two students had materials to make what he considered to make some good sized homemade fireworks but not the kind of stuff that makes bombs." but today that same spokesman declined to speak to the Tampa Tribune referring all comments back to the South Carolina's Sheriff's Office."

Now that is a quote I believe to be true. Here you have a spokesman for the FBI who was on the scene or someone from the FBI who was there told him what was in that trunk. There's why the FBI turned things back over the Sheriff Dewitt. Why no comment today...law enforcement doesn't want the left hand making the right hand look stupid, so only they right hand is going to comment

Now "materials to make some good sized homemade fireworks" = illegal fireworks. (also = fine and/or jail) BUT that does NOT = PIPE BOMB!

Here... I offer all of you that were foaming at the mouth this napkin to wipe your froth.
Don't feel humiliated in the end when the truth comes out. Just go back and read some of your postings and realize that you have made the same mistake that the people who tried the Duke students before all the info came out.

You know what really scares me is the complacency of our society. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud to live in a society of people who have so much trust in their neighbors, but really, to dismiss this incident as a couple of wayward kids is simply suicidal based on the events of our day. Many of you are in denial that we are at war.

Typically, we are not good judges of people when it comes to their potential as being criminals. We just weren't brought up that way. Look at just about every serial killer ever arrested and I'll show you a parade of people that give interviews to reporters of "What a quiet neighbor he was" or, "Gee, he always seemed so nice", Even Charles Manson made inroads to Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys.

We are up against an ideology that straps explosives to infants. We are up against an ideology that has no qualms about offering themselves up as cannon fodder for their suicidal missions to defat the infidel and claim their 72 virgins. This is a mindset we can't or refuse to wrap our minds around, Despite the evets of 911 we seem resigned to think somehow that it was just an abberation. I've seen this abberation play itself out since Black September launched their jihad on the Israeli Olympians in the 60, and it has gone alot longer that that, I can only speak for the events I've seen in my lifetime.

I am far more comfortable listening to people say,"I can't believe he's in jail, he seemed like such a nice kid", than the alternative. All of you that seem to think this is an over-reaction or some scare tactic by this administration just aren't comfortable with the reality that there are people out there who are hell bent on your destruction. Sorry for the dose of reality.

I get the feeling there is ALOT more to this than meets the eye. I have a suspicion that Ahmed Mohamed is the key here. He claims no relations here. He is also the one that gave differing dates of birth and two different spellings for what he is SAYING is his middle name. He is the one being the least cooperative. His only moral support showed up in the form of CAIR. I think if you find his connection here, we'll find our answer. There is far too much cryptic information coming out of this for it to be a simple case of a couple of kids with a pack of "black cats".

Well Said billyobog,

But I think you miss my point entirely. We do need to be vigilent, we do need to keep our eyes open, we need to hang terrorists in the public square (& I mean that literally).

But before we toss our freedoms (that MOST take for granted) out the window in the name of security we need to be darn sure of what we are doing. I cherish the freedom of not being searched without probable cause, I hold dear my freedom of being able to drive anywhere I please without being stopped for a legitimate reason and not just because someone has a badge. And I also hold dear the fact that IF I AM ever charged with anything that I will not have to PROVE I'm innocent but the government will have to prove my guilt. And there are many more examples...

I know more about explosives than 99% of the general population. (Keep in mind that 1% represents 3 million who know more) I can tell you from what I know and what has been reported it does NOT fly that these two men had true "Pipe Bombs".

There is a difference between perceived threats and real threats... Your'e right, the next 9/11 is coming, but they will slip thru the back door and hit us where we don't expect while everyone is wringing their hands over "fireworks".

Incredible!! So many comments and hang-ups on nationality, color of skin, religion, speculative motivation, whatever! Most of what I have read here is naivety to reality. It amazes me to think so much has been forgotten from the recent history of our Nation's dealings with terrorism. As a Nation, we can't afford to be so lax. This is happening on our soil, folks, As I said earlier,... there seems to be alot of coincidental findings being learned from where these so-called "students" came from, where they attend school (Florida), their mission, etc. It does NOT matter how small the "home-made bombs" were that were discovered in the trunk of that car, but that they WERE discovered! I for one, am greatful they were stopped for speeding and are now in the proper facility for investigating because of what was found. No one should be driving around with any type explosives in their car for any reason! I pray the judicial system will be just and that the "due process" will not be corrupted by prejudices of any kind, including liberal politicians. If what I've been reading is what we are as a society, we've lost sight of what America is and what we need to do to protect it. It wouldn't hurt as a Nation to turn back to the founding precepts of PRAYER and ask for guidance from the Almighty who created us all.

I'm sure the truth will come out very soon. The laptop is sure to help out one of the sides in this story. Why are the local officials back on the case- if they are terrorists? I see racism and hatred throughout these comments, how are various countries and cultures supposed to get along if Americans can't? billyoblog,

I read that same article while I was searching for news from Tampa Bay. It's like all the interviews with the "neighbors" either they say "He was such a nice or quiet or polite boy, I never thought he could have killed a 100 people" or it's the opposite "yea, he was a weirdo, I saw all sorts of strange things like aliens landing and mushroom clouds coming from the basement".

The neighbor also says the FBI told her that her prior neighbors were terrorists! I don't doubt or find a problem with the FBI telling her that. Think how you would react if the FBI showed up and said that to you. I really think it would be hard to keep your mind from running wild and speculating what the "terrorists" must have been up to.

I don't know about you, but my money is on what the FBI Spokesman said "That the two students had materials to make what he considered to make some good sized homemade fireworks but not the kind of stuff that makes bombs."

It's a lot easier to dismiss a "neighbor's" comments than to discount the comments of a FBI Spokesman.

It would have been incompetant for them not to follow up and investigate these men's backgrounds after being called in to aid in the investigation.

I am guessing you are making a reference to the FBI returning "control" back over to the BCSD on the night of the incident. But, hey... that kind of speaks for itself. ;)

The government will take all the power you give them, but the government rarely has the answers, the answers always lie with the people. Read your history books and no... I wanted to comment to a very rude an hateful email I received from a member of the P&C's website. This person said that I was being very negative in this forum. And that maybe if MY family got blown up, I'd have a different opinion. Here are the facts that he had forgotten to gather before his very inappropriate response. I did lose a relative in the 9/11 attacks. Does this mean that I think all middle easterners deserve to be treated like criminals for the actions of SOME? Absolutely not. And since when did our judicial system change so that people are GUILTY until proven INNOCENT? Yes I know they say these guys were speeding, and that they had pipe bombs. They got taken down to the station and put on trial because they had pipe bombs, yes, but this matter is being blown up nationally BECAUSE they are of a middle eastern decent. Who read the article about the boy from Virginia, I think it was, that had a bomb. I think the article said he's getting either 10 or less than 10 years. I bet he goes up for parole in a few years. All I have been saying is that these guys are being treated MORE harshly because of the actions of people in the past. Stereotyping and racial profiling are morally wrong. Unless there has been an incident, then that makes it ok. And please, no one else email me and talk about my family. That's more than wrong. On many levels.

you people need to get off of the racial profiling crap, this isn't about them being mideastern... it's about the pipe bombs

I clearly remember a few yrs back when a little white boy put a pipe bomb in a mailbox half across the country and it was headline national news for two weeks

this incident with these guys hasn't made headline national news for more than a few hours at a time before it dropped down somewhere where you have to hunt to find it

it isn't "where they're from" or "what color their skin is", it's about riding around with pipe bombs in your trunk speeding through an area everyone from here knows better than to speed in... Goose Creek is where even the cops don't speed because they won't even give each other a break

I think everyone's blowing it up into anything they can for entertainments sake

it's merely about a couple of dummy's cruising too fast through the creek with pipe bombs in the trunk, it wouldn't matter what race or nationality they are from

I've seen the cops in the creek check many a trunk in white boy's cars... they don't deserve to NOT be checked because they look different do they???
