Check-cashing company to settle lawsuit for $20,000

Saturday, August 4, 2007

COLUMBIA — A check-cashing company doing business in South Carolina will pay $20,000 to settle a lawsuit that claimed the company discriminated against a pregnant employee in Charleston.

A complaint filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last year alleged that EZ Money Inc., EZ Check Cashing of Charlotte Inc. and Greenville International Inc. discriminated against Constance Times, who was a collections manager at an EZ Check Cashing location in Charleston.

'The EEOC takes pregnancy discrimination claims very seriously,' EEOC attorney Lynette Barnes said.

'The law ensures that women cannot be fired for becoming pregnant or taking maternity leave. No one should have to choose between motherhood and her livelihood.'

Times was replaced by a man when she was fired in September 2005, the EEOC said.
